  • Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo Yoga 920 high end Ultrabook with a 14” display supporting pen and touch, Intel 8th generation quad core CPUs and Thunderbolt 3. The Yoga 920 boasts several key improvements over last year’s Yoga 910, and it’s a worthy competitor to the 13” HP Spectre x360. It’s available with Intel 8th gen Kaby Lake-R Core i5-8250U and i7-8550U 15 watt quad core CPUs, Intel UHD 620 graphics, up to 16GB RAM and there are a variety of PCIe NVMe SSD capacities available. You can get it with a full HD or 4K IPS display. Pricing starts around $1,199.

    So I bought the 4k/i7 8550U/512gb/Silver version of this laptop. I got it on sale from Best Buy for $1350 before tax. I absolutely love it. Performance is great. I like the keyboard, since I learned to type on a MacBook Air. The typing is much better on this laptop. The trackpad isn't quite Mac level, but it's almost as good. I'd say the only Windows trackpad that's any better is the Surface laptops.
    In terms of ports, if you accept that this is an Ultrabook, then this is a perfect selection IMO. With a hub, you can have one cord for a few USB ports (say keyboard, mouse, and backup drive), power, AND monitor out. That's 5 ports for one. If you accept that a hub is the way to go, having 2 USB-C/Thunderbolt ports is an amazing feature.
    The 4k screen is amazing. It looks stunning. The colors look amazing. The contrast does too. I do agree that it could be brighter. I'm comfortable with the brightness 98% of the time, but I frequently have it at max brightness.
    I think the slightly higher cost vs similar spec laptops is absolutely worth it because of the build quality. This thing feels like what Apple wishes it built. If this ran Mac, this would be everyone's favorite Mac. The hinge is amazing, especially since it makes the 2-in-1 experience so much better. I have a friend with an HP Spectre X360. His screen falls flat if it's open more than about 120 degrees. This hinge feels absolutely beastly, and I love it's looks too.
    All in all, this is what Windows laptops should be in 2018.

    Hey Lisa. Love the channel. Your reviews are honestly the best in the business. I bought the 920 and have just had it replaced under a Lenovo DOA program. Unfortunately, the power drain in sleep mode extends to when the laptop is shut down! Your review was the only one that picked up the potential flaw, but it is far worse than I expected. It loses approx 10% per day when turned off.
    No software or bios updates have helped and the problem has replicated itself on this second machine.
    The machine really could have been a knock out (there are only a couple of other minor improvements that I would have made), as in the best laptop I have owned. However, this is a fatal flaw that means I'm heading back to Lenovo for a refund.
    I urge you to put a warning on your review, as buyers should be informed about this issue before purchase.

    I'd like to add one thing about Lenovo and their extended warranties. I researched most of the 2-in-1's that are currently in production. This 920 has the cheapest extended warranty in the market. So it might be a little more expensive than an x360, etc. - but in the long run it will be priced about the same if, like me, you want to get an upgraded warranty....just a quick f.y.i.

    • @im2late

      Don't feel badly. I think the Spectre compares very nicely to this machine. If you got the FHD display, I actually think the HP is a bit superior, and I also think the HP has a bit of an audio advantage due to the top firing speakers when in laptop mode. (Both have rear firing speakers when in tent mode.) IMHO the keyboards feel almost identical but I do prefer the touch pad of the Yoga 920. Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with either of these. :)

    • @mobiletechreview
      @mobiletechreview  6 лет назад +12

      It's Wacom AES, so not so different from the many Wacom AES devices I've reviewed in the past, including the Yoga 720 15". it's no Wacom MobileStudio Pro, but it's also a lot cheaper and a good choice if you need a laptop form factor. Nothing beats Wacom EMR for advanced art work, but you can still do a lot of good work with this. Great for cartoonists certainly, with good pressure levels and no parallax. Similar to Surface Pro 2017, minus tilt support.

    I've been waiting forever for a laptop for my needs. this one is close. The overnight battery drain issue is a show stopper for me though. By far, the surface laptop would have been my favorite laptop but I returned it because it only has a 45Wh battery. The rest of the surface laptop was great (3:2 displays are awesome).
    Thanks again for a well done review.

    • @clarkmaurer
      @clarkmaurer 6 лет назад

      As noted in her review, the battery drops by 15% overnight. That's really bad. This type of laptop should (like the surface laptop and others), save off the state of memory to disk and resume from where you left off when you activate the laptop in the morning. When you do this, the battery should drop like 0%. I don't know why the Yoga 920 has a problem here.

    • @DomJC1992
      @DomJC1992 6 лет назад

      Ahh sorry, I didn't notice that she said that! For anyone wondering, it's mentioned around 10:35. Yeah it's odd. Maybe it's keeping WiFi on during standby. It would be interesting to see if this battery drain still happens if you manually put it to sleep before closing the lid!

    Tried one at the Microsoft store. As expected, the trackpad rattles even with light taps and is my main deal-breaker. The top fifth is almost impossible to click. I liked everything else about the 920, minus its price. Would prefer 16GB RAM at Microsoft's $1,400, but it instead has 8GB RAM / 256GB SSD. Though, it does have the i7-8550U versus the i5-8250U and Windows 10 Pro.
    The search for the perfect 2-in-1 continues...

Hp laptops (spectre x360 13in and envy x360 15in) bodies bend and shift around near the hinges and behind the screen. Not a sign of design for durability. Yoga watchband hinge is purposely designed for durability.

    no dGPU in this pricarange it should be fitted with anMX150 at least or ewen older 940MX (BDDR5) would be vital.
    ewen thow 8gen CPU are impressiv as long as they can hold there clocks, the iGPU HD620 certainly aint and handicap it quite a bit for an item like the one in the vid there cost 1550USD it should have dGPU and partically anno2017 there quite lean on powerdrain..
    and those Geekbench scores 2:04 around 13.593 are on the lower side for an i7 U8550 where we often see around 16.000 for that chipset.

    I bought one, took a while to get used to the keyboard but like it now. How do you calibrate the screen though? It really doesn't look great.

    Wish they just started using 3:2 screens on ultrabooks to 1. avoid those awfully huge vertical bezels, and 2. Just cos 3:2 is better for productivity and the other sorts of things you'd be doing with ultrabooks.

    Do you know how to customize and set the functions for the Lenovo Active 2 Pen? It has 3 buttons, one on the top and two at the bottom. The lowest button is the eraser-button. I would like to turn that off because it is in the way when drawing or writing. It is too easy to touch the button allthough you are not intending to erase anything. I cannot find any information on how to customize the buttons.

    How would you edit pictures without the sd card slot on the Lenovo 920? With the laptop I have now, I simply insert my sd card into the slot and begin importing pictures to photoshop instantly and I’m not sure how I would do that on the Lenovo 920. I’m torn between this one and the Hp Spectre x360 because of the trade off of the sd card slot and color accuracy :(
