My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa. Paris (yes the one in France) has been my home for years now and I have every intention of staying here for as long as they'll have me. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much. Now I make videos about visiting Paris, traveling in Europe, and try to share what I've learned along the way. I hope you enjoyed what you found.
Links are affiliate links where they can be - meaning if you click through them and buy something, I'll get some pennies. Thanks! (The FTC wants me to tell you that up front)

I'm loving this return to daily uploads.. (Or semi-daily?) Swanson's energy & smiling face always cheers me up!
I'm so glad!
yesssssss welcome to Thailand! Go get yourself some street food asap. And even though it's not a regional dish (more northern Thailand/Myanmar border), I recommend a hot bowl of Khao Soi, my absolute *favorite* dish. It'll set you straight and solve all the world's problems. Also, the Paris to BKK route tends to have good flight prices. Enjoy!
The Khao Soi seems like a popular favorite! Gotta try it
Technical Term of the Day: Sleep deprivied
Wow - Bangkok ! And your view from your room and that pool. Just amazing! Hope you’re having the best of times out there Jay! 👍👍
It's been awesome! Especially after a bit of sleep 😆
Wow what a nice surpise, that city looks amazing. Well, have a safe trip and make sure you do a lot of sightseeing before you return to Paris and don't forget to take pictures and get some sleep. Merci
On it! 🥂
Hi Jay, Thailand on my list… have a great time! Stay well
Thanks, you too!
8:48 OMG WHEN I TELL YOU I had a phase where I was just fascinated by 7-11. Especially the noodles and the corresponding microwave.
I'm so excited
Welcome to SE Asia. If you read this while in Thailand (Sarah and I are in Kuala Lumpur) you have to try Khao Soi. It's the bomb! It's a northern Thailand dish but you can find it in spots around Bangkok. Enjoy your time there.
Oooh, very interested
I found AF to be so lovely every time I’ve flown with them! Wow Thailand! NICE ! 🎉 enjoy!
I have been to Thailand several times and have never had jetlag (in any situation, not just when traveling to Asia) and I agree completely with your stay awake strategy. It makes for a dopey first day but it really really helps. As for spicy, it is not always a given (although, I grew up in the Caribbean so may have a different thought on spicy) - I would say that things are always well seasoned, though
You grew up with way more spice than I did 😆 I'm loving it here
@@JaySwanson I am glad that you are loving the food!!! The fruit, fish, and people are all next level!!!!
My comment came out the wrong way - what I was trying to say was that, although I love spicy food, I feel that most of the food is just well-seasoned rather than being crazy hot. I
Sleep when the city sleeps. That’s a tip that’s always stayed with me and it definitely works.
Except, some cities never sleep. 😂 🌴🌴Aloha
But what if you land in New York? 😆
@@JaySwanson yes! The city that never sleeps. Good one 😂
So, Thailand is warm? 😂 Hawaii is 🥶. Really looking forward to this vlog. 🌴🌴Aloha
More to come!
Oh man, now I'm going to worry about being as sleep deprived as you when I go to London! 😂😂😂 But you're hilarious when you're sleep deprived!
Definitely hit up a 7-11 any time you're in Asia. I hear they're amazing!
The 7-11 experience is high on my list 😆
Have a lovely trip!
Thank you! 😃
Wow! Enjoy Thailand!
Will do!
I remember this channel when it had 100 subs.
You and Dutch Paul
Haha fun video. Yah I try to stay up that first day and not fall asleep in my time zone. I try to book a flight that lands in the afternoon or evening so that I’m not forced to stay up an entire day feeling miserable. I travel often for work so I have to sync fast. Often I don’t get more than that first day/evening before work starts the 2nd day.
Oh a strange tip that seems to work: exercising. If I arrive somewhere earlier in the day and I’m super tired and tempted to sleep I’ll go hit the hotel gym. I think it does the same thing as going out and walking about.. just keeping the body moving because once stationary…. It’s game over 😂 cheers.
Same! Exercise helps a ton and I think accelerates adjusting. The first couple of days are rough but then you're through the worst of it
Flying Economy is the Best Class
I already don't sleep well, and at irregular hours, so fighting jetlag is quite easy when you're always sleep deprived to begin with.
Can't crack the battle hardened
The slightly sleepless ‘drunken’ slurring 😄
Was on the struggle bus for sure 😅
I recently stayed in the 5 star Marriott Marquis Hotel in Dubai and it was a similar buffet experience. I was there on an Emirates layover and it included lunch, dinner, and breakfast buffet and they were all amazing. There were also several other hotels and a bakery in the hotel, but the buffet was included so I went there. Making me think difrently about Marriott
So cool!
3:20 I’m a mess in any time zone but you’re so right about the East.
Awesome!
Thanks!
Yep.. the rule/advice of staying up until 10pm is good; i will ad a melatonin pill to that!!…and you’ll feel better!! Enjoy your trip!!! (Looking forward to Paris next March!!.. thanks for your advice, truly appreciated!!)
You're most welcome! Have a great trip yourself 🥂
Went to Brussels from Miami and with the layover it was 24 hours total. I made it to about 11:30 p.m. Brussels time. It was brutal but you've got to power through it. Caffeine can definitely be your friend here.
Caffeine is always my friend!
You will find the people in Thailand to be the friendliest you will meet anywhere. Do at least one night time rooftop bar while there. Have a great time!!
Definitely need to hit a rooftop on our return!
8:11 Unlike the US, we love going to the mall lol
Definitely don’t skip out on the 7-11 they have a lot of great snacks!
Cannot waiiiiiit
7:32 XXXXXXXL? Wow.
😆
The maxim for jet lag: "Traveling west is best; east is a beast". But there's beating jetlag and then there's beating jetlag in Thailand. A massage that costs ~US$20 to loosen all your tight joints from the long flight and a fresh pomelo salad, mango sticky rice and Thai iced tea to perk you up. Have the best time and especially enjoy the amazing food that you'll find e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e !!
Cannot wait for a massage! The sticky rice and mango happened last night. So good.
0:51 It’s probably a simulation.
i share that dream but even really rich people don't always go 1st class - doesn't always make sense. also - you're brain reset strat is on point - I find it works both ways (mostly). stay awake!
The nice part is I get to land in Paris traveling WEST for once 😅
I have to admit, if i am arriving before noon, i will grab brunch and a shower then take a nap. ( i usually stay in a friends apartment. Its a bit more difficult in a hotel). Then I get up and go walk, have diner and stay up until 10-11pm. If i arrive after lunchtime, i just power through by walking, eating dinner, then sleep.
Yeah! And different techniques work for different people too, of course!
So much stress on the body ❤❤❤
The main drawback to long distance travel
2:30 Wow, that is quite a first to have.
Quote of the Day: “Did I mention that I’m really freaking tired right n-“
😴
You said 'tired of sitting', seems you were just tired 😂 mmh, think age might also plays a part, the clock stops for no-one. Oh, never feel happy in an infinity pool, never feel the that 'thrill'. 😊
The legs were very tired of sitting 😆
Jay: must visit pizzeria mazzie in Ekkamai (sir 63). take BTS to ekkamai, walk up sir 63, left hand side at Park Lane. Thanks for the quick hit video's and the substack reads...enjoy Bangkok.
Thanks for the tips!
For a moment, I thought you were in Mumbai but I saw the street signs and I knew it was Thailand.
What is the name of the hotel
That was the Okura Prestige Bangkok
interesting!
And fun!
Take it the card is gone? 🤔
Oh yeah
How did you find the great last minute hotel bargain? A website you can share?
