  • Today is the 1 Year Anniversary of the premiere of Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie. The first public screening was on July 21, 2014 at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. It was an epic night for all of us.
Here, for the first time on RUclips, is the special effects documentary from the Blu-ray/DVD. It shows the creative process behind the practical effects in the film.
Most of the film was shot in the Los Angeles area, inside studios and exterior locations which all required expensive permits. We also worked with union cast and union crew members. It was a big production, but ironically, many of the effects were done with a small local crew, Cinemassacre-style, after I returned home to the East Coast.
Enjoy this documentary, which only gives a small glimpse at the making of the film. There is so much more to it. I plan to release more videos like this, over time.

I thought the movie was just kind of OK, but it's still amazing to see and hear how much work and effort was actually put into it. I've always been a big fan of practical effects, so seeing how everything was made, is always super interesting.

I don't get all the hate for the movie. I thought it was really refreshing. The visual effects have that Cinemassacre charm, but are also impressively practical. The story was very well told, and always kept moving forward. I could tell that a lot of hard work and dedication was put into making the movie, and I hope it inspires up and coming filmmakers to tell the stories they want to tell without Hollywood getting their fingerprints all over them.

Is it one of the best movies out there? No. Not a long shot. But it's still an enjoyable movie

It was alright. The problem for me was that I could care less about 2 new characters. It should have been Mike or Kyle. Someone fans recognize. I would probably never have the urge to watch it again. Been keeping up with avgn since the early, early reviews...but this film simply did nothing for me. The ET review at the end was the best part for me. Still love the new reviews and the Board James plot right now is fucking excellent. Also anything where James and Mike talk about old games or old films.

    • @feckafeck1
      @feckafeck1 9 лет назад +35

CDWatk I disagree, it was completely the opposite to what I was expecting. The movie had none of the charm and humour of the series and was over ambitious. It was disjointed and there was way too many ideas but most importantly it wasn't that funny. If it was funny you could forgive most of its failings. I look forward to any new film James has in mind, now that he's learned so much about the mechanics of film making he could concentrate on a better script. Im not saying the film was bad, it was just really average. James has to be commended for he's work ethic and ambition.

Not out to make anything groundbreaking or critically-acclaimed but just have fun making rich kid's school project films with his friends and get some laughs out of people, only James Rolfe would probably add more substance with his films.

I'm really not sure what people were expecting with a AVGN movie, I find it hard to believe that anyone that was disappointed with the AVGN movie have even watched more that 3 episodes of the show. ***** i didn't say i can. i said james could have. instead he went the pc route by hiring a girl gamer, black token guy, and doing a b action film instead of just being an angry gamer who experiences what we did as kids. he screwed up bigtime. worst part is he added insult to injury by not having mike or guitar guy in the film. that's a real big diss.

***** So unless you can make a better movie or video game, you can't critic them. Looks like James is out of a job.

thank you Amazon video (and Amazon prime) for including this monumental film about some guy reviewing old games in his basement!

I really enjoyed the movie, I think that a lot of people don't understand it. Its not just ''AVGN the movie'', it's more ''James the movie''. With everything in it that he loves from other movies and media.

Here James direct a movie like this is pretty awesome. I like his cheesy humour, and his old-style practical effects.

I just want James and everyone involved in the AVGN movie to know that I watched this movie for the 3rd time tonight and I really think its amazing.. all the hard work .. for the real fans that have followed him over the years.. It definitely hit a soft spot for me.. LOVE YA NERD!

+Ryan Geidl btw I also submitted a cover song of the AVGN theme song and James actually replayed
to my email saying "nice production quality" that kind of 1/3 completed my life.. even though he has never used it.

Whoa! Did you see that. XD
Watching this movie gave such appreciation to practical effects, it was 1 of my favorite movies of 2014. So far, the one movie that combined both practical effects and computer generated is that Mad Max movie. Such love and care for their movies deserve such rewards.
I'm still trying to get a BluRay movie.

It is really inspiring how much effort love and soul went to this production!
I have to say I am on the side which thinks the movie is not as good as everyone expected it to be, that especially sad seeing how hard they worked on this, I can't ignore the problems the movie has but still appreciate people who really tried making a good Movie for the Fans, this is by no means and no one can tell me that a "Bad" Movie but it is still not enough the reach the realms of a "good" movie, but I am looking forward, none of us could do such a great production in this scale I think James and the others will grow throughout this and maybe we see another big movie from James, doesn't even have to be AVGN since I think it would be better for him having a break from that and focus on something else maybe, but that's just my humble opinion, I hope many if you enjoyed the movie

hope he makes another one but with the focus on the old AVGN anger and comedy, I think he's too old now, young AVGN still had good testosterone levels.

Oh yes! Finally someone who gets it.
I really, really miss the old days of cinema. I remember the incredibly detailed and so impossibly well done miniature and even puppeteer work the Andersons did for Thunderbirds or later their Real Life work on UFO and Space 1999. So awesome miniatures and model work. Still looks awesome when you look at it today, it really aged very, very well.
Way, way better than any CGI of today. Yes, CGI is good and we're at the point where it's more real than real. But knowing that a lot of really talented sculptors and modelers worked to create a wonderful illusion, seeing someone really pull something off that looks awesome and back in your head you KNOW that it's a miniature but they manage to make it look so real and believable... this is awe inspiring.
Yes, it is actually way, way more impressive than CGI could ever be. Because it's pretty easy to do in CGI. I should know, I do it. But I honestly admire people who can do it with miniatures. This is where the real art is.
