Lane splits are moving violations
Use expert judgement to avoid having to use expert skill. But if all hell breaks loose, you better know how to use expert skill. This video is like my last 5 packed all in one. Great info to many, common sense to few.
@@InstructorCory 100% there are old pilots and bold pilots, but there is no old bold pilots. same with motorcycles. edit/sidenote: great video motojitsu.
This is what's lacking in most riders in my country. Most people think its just all about speed and the ability to lane filter and swerve in any situation. Anticipation really plays a huge role in driving/riding in general. Thank you for sharing this man.
There was a study about speed and safety. The safety area is 10 mph faster than the surrounding traffic.
@@mannyechaluce3814, sane people in cars do not try to match the speed of bikers since they know that they are more visible to the cops and less maneuverable. So your scenario is more a theoretical than a reality...has never happened to me. Other bikers are a different matter.
I need to print that out, and give it to the officer for my next ticket.
@@NotSure416if you get caught that’s your fault
Until a cop that don't ride give you a ticket for doing so lol
just realised it must suck to have a bike where lane splitting is illegal :/
You could cut the 28x down since half the accidents are caused by alcohol and drugs, and being sleepy. I was listening to an interview with a Florida sheriff the other day and I can’t remember, 60%? Well over half of collisions involving motorcycle and cars or trucks are the motorcyclists fault, and most of them are alcohol and drug related. I see a few bars near my home with Harleys (a few other brands) outside them anytime they are open. So the message is not being heard. This is not to do with jitsus content today, not to refute what he is saying, he’s right, absolutely. But if you drink or take even a little bit and go riding, you can’t strategize your way out of the booze or drugs. People in cars are terribly dangerous, they are not looking for you and don’t care, but you have to start without the handicap of alcohol or drugs.
I just started riding last week since I already got my license. And your videos really helped me a lot when on the road(lane positioning, escape routes on stop light, avoiding blindspots, anticipate stupid, etc) it gave me a lot of confidence and not once did I panic. I just want to say thank you. Finally subbed I think yesterday or 2 days ago after seeing a lot of your informational videos. Best channel for motorcycle etiquette IMO.
Another thing is I try my best to avoid riding at night. It's just too difficult to see obstacles on the road.
Break the Law on the road to keep Safe??
I'm not too sure about that advice.
Constantly Lane Splitting , undertaking, overtaking, has only a certain shelf life for an average rider.
Yeah, that seems like really questionable advice to me. Lane splitting is just stupid
Mate your approach to teaching this stuff, your no nonsense attitude in regards to safety etc is just bloody awesome and has been a massive help to me in my early stages of learning to ride on the road, thank you very much sir, I appreciate your videos to the moon, keep on rocking dude!
I believe many people underestimate the importance of these defensive riding tips. I just did lane filtering in heavy freeway traffic, and it truly emphasizes the need to remain alert and focused in such situations!
I just don’t lane split. Just seems like asking for trouble
@@everydaytenor8862 I think riding faster than the traffic flow is probably smart and passing when safe to do so it’s fine but lane splitting is just stupid
@@everydaytenor8862 filtering is legal here in Utah and I do it.
@@MikaelLewisify- it’s actually safer if you do it correctly. That’s why it’s legal in CA.
@@24james how is it safer? I see cars shift lanes abruptly all the time. People drift because they are looking at their phones. They are not expecting to see you between them and another car. Just seems like a really bad idea to me.
I was a few minutes behind motorcycle-car wreck last year. BLUF: car was in left turn lane, motorcycle riding straight in lane to right of car, at last moment car went right out of their lane & hit full dresser H-D with rider & passenger. Riders seriously injured, survived but permanent injuries. I stay away from cars as much as possible. Just my opinion, you ride close to those cars & tractor trailer, even passed a car in the same lane (you 2 shared the same lane). All it takes is a bump on the steering wheel, spilled coffee, driver search for something, etc. & could be impact. Ride safe.
This is one of the best formats that you make in my opinion. Literally skin to the game.
I like how you said “imagine” that everyone is stupid. Don’t need to imagine it! Great work and advice!
I really like that phrase, "predict stupid and you'll be fine." That perfectly sums up most of the non-motorcycle riding individuals on the road. I've always maintained that "they're all out to get you." ....works for me!
Works well for all aspects of life lol
Although I know there's blind spot, I never thought that staying close to their vehicle would be safer than staying in the left side of the lane, that's interesting.
But getting away from people is also my first goal when choosing when and where I ride my 2 wheels.
I’m a California rider (R1200RT) in the SoCal area too. You’re 💯 spot on. I do the same thing as you when I ride the freeways down here. If you don’t, you are asking to go down. Even after a few decades of riding and splitting lanes, I just don’t understand why some guys push WAY TOO HARD and go TOO FAST while splitting lanes. The cars are not paying even the smallest amount of attention and they’ll hit you in a flash. Too much speed will limit your reaction time and send you to the hospital or the grave. One of my mentors when I first learned to ride told me something that has stuck all these years. He said there are two types of riders, those that have gone down and those that will go down. By being as safe as possible, I’m hoping to push the date of me going down far ahead of where I’m currently at. Thanks for your content. 🥋 🏍️
I definitely agree with the yellow lights. As a car driver I’m not accustomed to seeing yellow lights other than stop lights or warning indicators on signs. A yellow light will get my attention.
Your observation and strategy of getting away from the unsafe drivers is a good one. One addition I make to all my bikes is adding fog/running lights to my crash guards on all my bikes except for my CVO, which has them up high. At the least, I've got 5 lights facing forward. As to gear I now incorporate a bright yellow helite airbag vest. I started this after I lost a good friend on his BMW bike up by Steamboat, CO, when he hit a mule deer. He was DOA by the time they got him to the hospital. The helmet is full face.
Sorry to hear about your friend. I'm in CO as well, so that's a good awareness to have about the mule deer. Glad you're respecting your friend's memory by wearing that airbag vest. Ride safe out there.
@InstructorCory Thank you for the kind words. His name was Richard Jack. We lost him on June 26, of 2010. He is sorely missed.
And of course, most important of all, always keep both hands on the bars.
Perfect timing for this vid a bunch of people I know including my self just completed our msf, got our licenses, and only started riding for about a month and these vids help a lot!!!!
No BS info; this is how I’ve lived this long. From 16-64, most riders fell out. The survivors wanna keep riding, so ride sane. People tell me to ride safe; I tell them it’s impossible to be “safe” on a motorcycle, but I WILL be careful and competent.
bro you said everything a real motorcycle should say... great education videos and thanks for sharing like aways your ideas and experiences.
I looove your attitude. You don't sugarcoat shit. You keep it real. Thank you so much!!!😀😀😀😀
Good stuff Eddie. As an Army veteran, I've learned all about situational awareness and I try to teach my kids the same thing. Don't get "tunnel vision" with what's going on in your immediate area, but stay aware of the whole situation. What's around you, what's beyond you and what's coming and going. These concepts are the same for riding a motorcycle as well as doing anything else in public. Keep your head up and be aware.
This video is packed with excellent information on defensive riding. Anyone from new to experienced could benefit from this. You are doing great work MJ. Thanks
I don’t know about California, but here in British Columbia, Canada, lane splitting is illegal and I think in the whole country. One of the problems I find riding in my area is a lot of drivers don’t like to drive behind a motorcycle, they often want to take over you to slow down in front of you. That drives me mad. By the way, love your videos, they are very practical and instructional. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
The only thing I have a problem with in your videos is the fact I can recognize all those roads and am so jealous I don't live in LA anymore. Thanks so much for all your videos and content. Being a first time rider on a S1KRR, it's been an absolutely amazing time thanks to you and a couple other channels. Your advice to go take classes likely saved me. Also, not sure if others feel the same way, but I feel about 50x safer on freeways than local or "intersectioned" roads. Love your attitude and hope you don't change!
I certainly agree with you about expecting the unexpected when riding in traffic. I have seen a lot of this in the years I have been riding. I enjoy your instructions to other riders in your videos. I have ordered two of your books from Amazon and looking forward to receiving them.. Keep your outstanding instructions coming on videos. I hope every motorcycle rider takes time to watch and appreciate your videos.
I started with a scooter/moped it actually helped me with all this stuff on normal roads but on the highway? Different story, everything was just faster so this vid actually helped a lot
One of your best videos. I would describe your concepts as the general subject of "situational awareness" at all times, and constantly making best choices to manage risks. Your comments about being aware of several semis coming on and how that moves the vehicles in lanes 1-3 into your area of concern is a great example. Some other concepts I follow riding are: 1) maintain two second gap to the vehicle in front (add more if speed goes up), what is my escape route/plan, manage the space BEHIND you by managing the space IN FRONT of you, pace not race - nothing to prove, what's next all the time, no accidents ever. Expecting total b.s. and chaos prepares you mentally and tactically for anything.
Man your phrase of "manage the space BEHIND you by managing the space IN FRONT of you" is spot on, puts into words eloquently what ive theorized for a while now, which is basically the more space you give yourself, means the more time you allow the driver behind you to react in a scenario where you have to react, because you dont have to act as abruptly to a sudden traffic change as you would if you were following closer. I dont ride a bike but I definitely adhere to a form of space between cars by a count of seconds (generally I try to maintain 3-3.5s minimum of distance in a car). Also, i dont know if adding more time is necessary perhaps maybe it is from a biking safety perspective but... whats nice about the seconds as a measure of distance between vehicles is its self adjusting with speed. ie: 2s distance at 5mph is a lot closer to a vehicle than 2s at 70mph is..
Excellent advice as always my brother…You have the best channel on RUclips BAR NONE!!!
God bless my brother.
12:24 "imagine everyone's stup!d" the sad fact you dont have to imagine because nowadays everyone is .
Anyways thanks for the tips. These tips are forsure going to help me when i start riding.
Thanks again, Greg! Loved all you had to say in this video. As I watched, I was imagining myself riding the same course and I was paying attention to what you were saying and doing.
I switched to Green led's on front and red led's rear,, with clear lenses and 2 blinker genies to keep them all on as running lights my 2000 X650RL. People notice me in the daytime way away earlier than before. And at night time it's very very bright👍
As a So Cal commuter I agree with everything in this video. Approved!!! 😊
Hey Greg you are a legend for motorcycle safety. Thank you man
Thanx Eddie! I watch your channel for a couple of years already , and seriously consider you , one of the best , who shares your knowledge, and with others.Thanx for everything you doing!
This is the content I am here for. Thank you!!
Being a urban police officer is one of the most dangerous job in the world. Most of them don't die or get hurt. So even if something is extremely dangerous, you can be completely fine and not have any problems if you have the right judgment and knowledge. Motorcycles are the same.
I really like your perspective, be prepared!
Thanks for the consistently good content you put out.
Thanks I wish I had watched this video at the beginning of this year I would have dodged this broken arm but then again better late than never so thanks
oh man the harzard light is such a good idea when lane splitting in california. never driven a moto yet
Hey moto, I appreciate the safety video, EVERYONE who rides should watch & take heed.
Been riding since 72 & always rode as this video & you explained.
Went down once in my life on a cloverleaf covered with diesel fuel.......surprise!!
Lord was watching over me, I knew how to separate myself from bike, once stopped, picked up & rode home.
WE APPRECIATE YOUR KNOWLEDGE & EXPLAINATIONS AS TO WHY....
Thanks again....
Ride as everyone is out to get you
Although you are right about staying out of blind spots, my theory is to stay to the outside of the other lane when passing line of vehicles just in case someone cuts over. Technically I’m not in the blind spot until I’m just behind the vehicle. I prefer the space cushion so I have time to react. If you are passing and close to traffic you are at their mercy.
Brilliant! Exactly what we need to practice, Murphy's Law to the max, always! Thank you!
I caught myself checking your mirrors while sitting at the lights. :D Even though all of this fits into a 15 minute video, I know it took a long time to develop. Thanks a lot.
welcome

“What’s the best decision at that moment” is so correct. It’s amazing to me how many bad decisions I see riders & drivers make every day in SoCal. I keep my head on a swivel, stay focused on my surroundings…and usually I can tell what they’re going to do before they do it💯👍🏽🏍️
Brilliant thoughts; I concur 😉
If I'm not practicing, I'm watching videos! Either way, it's always learning!
Love this channel for the combination of education, fun, safety, and straight talking! 👍
Just a note about blind spots, on some luxury cars they now have blind spot warning lights on their mirrors. When you ride near these cars then you can see when you reach the blind spot by keeping an eye on the cars mirror and seeing this light go on and off.
“Predict stupid, and you’ll be fine” Amen to that.
Reminded me of Dwight saying "don't be an idiot, changed my life". Lol
I found your channel a year ago when I got my first bike the advice has been good especially where I lived because there were 2- 7 wreaks a day on the same roads and countless people pulled out in front of me when I first started taking my bike through town but I would either be on the left side or right side depending on what side they would be pulling into the road from and could either dodge or slow down enough to avoid them. Definitely going to start doing your drills because I just moved to a way busier town. Love the videos and advice
That is so beautiful scenery where you're at.
I always try to remember...
In an accident with a car...
The car gets a dent and you get a trip in an ambulance... 😳
Also I wish when talking about speed on the highway and looking ahead...
You had mentioned that there are speeds that can out run your vision...
Thank you for doing this. God help us, look at what you’re saying: “no one drives at the speed limit”, “half the people are on their mobile phone anyway”. You made see the reality that I’m a goat in the jungle, every time I ride😂.
"If you drive the speed limit ..."
I've lived in different areas, but where I am now:
The interstate highway speed limit here is 70 except in certain more populous areas where it's slower. Some people may drive about the speed limit, more than I'd expect drive slower, but most people will cruise at just over 70 to about 77, which I'd guess is about 75, maybe 80 on some, speedometers. About 30% seem to do 80-85, and then there are the idjits who are trying to drive much faster or much slower than traffic in the fringe quantities.
But what causes the most overt danger from my observation are the following:
People who wait to change lanes until the last moment to exit (often needing to cross two or more lanes to reach a highway exit)
People who are either not paying attention or have potentially disastrous reaction speeds, approaching other cars much too closely and braking before even considering a move into a passing lane
People cutting others off
People who drive at or below the speed limit in the far left lane
What makes me the most nervous is what I call a traffic clump. It's a batch of cars traveling about the same speed, and there are usually a few people jockeying to be the front car going that speed, accelerating to weave around, then slowing down again. It results in a dense little herd of people all tailgating, cutting others off, and people getting irritated by everyone else's behaviors.
MOST EXCELLENT!!
THANK YOU SIR
You’re right about people on the phone.
Thank you MotoJitsu
At 3:38 you’re absolutely right there’s studies that show speed differential is the principal factor in severe highway crashes, it’s estimated that 10-15+ mph speed difference becomes dangerous, that’s why there’s a law that say’s you can follow the flow of traffic even if everyone around you is doing over the speed limit, I’m sure you must’ve seen it being local to San Diego, once you go past Balboa park up north in the freeway everyone is doing 85-90 mph, I’m not trying to get sandwiched by and F150 doing 90mph while I’m on my GS doing 65.
Depends on where you are. Different color or additional lights illegal
When you look at the causes of motorcycle fatalities, an experienced rider with good strategy can reduce the dangers of riding close to that of a car. The difference is our protection is agility not armor. Dark Souls players will understand this. If you don't get hit you don't need armor, but you have to be good enough to not get hit.
Crazy how many people are on their phones when driving. Always something to look out for.
Agree with almost everything posted on the video.
As for lane filter on highway, an additional precaution would be to ensure an escape route. In essence lane filtering is zig zag, as opposed to having a vehicle on both sides.
However, when vehicles are stopped or real slow speed, then exercise speed differential to pass between vehicles whilst covering the brakes for a potential 'idiot'.
Thanks for the great videos which has improved my riding skills through your vidoes n Motojitsu Belt training.
here in Dallas Texas if you are going slightly faster than traffic you are doing 100+mph 😂 but i love it 😎
I totally agree with everything you said in this video. Amazing job MotoJitsu.
Absolutely agree. I see a lot of new riders around here, delivering for those apps like Uber eats, and the hesitate a lot on those situations where I would expect them to go through first.
At age 80, shortly, highway driving is absolutely out of the question. 50mph is my upper limit. I will not ride where the speed is greater then that.
Plenty of great riding with my limit
As always, Very great video👍
Thank you so much for this video this was SUPER helpful to see how you drive in real life situation !!!!
Good video, lots of good advice. Thanks.
Even if they’re looking at me, I assume two things; number one they don’t see me and number two, they don’t give a shit about me even if they DO see me.
Maybe people think the flashing hazards are a motorcop coming up.
I love how you are too the point.... Like " you're a moron and you need to sale your bike" this could save there life maybe and shut up and practice...
Preach on brother!
HBD! I have a riddle for you: what does a dead man in a cabin, a man with a gun in a bar, and a dead man on bicycles have in common?
Every time I throw my leg over my motorcycle I know I’d better enjoy it because it could very well be my last ride. I’ve been riding with this mindset for 20+ years, been lucky with no accidents.
I definitely think I became a better driver after I started riding.
Agreed..42 years driving before I got my bike licence, and my driving has changed so much as a result!!
honestly because of this ive been thinking of having a gopro chin mount not just for safety but to make a youtube series possibly called wacky actions of cagers lol
You mentioned the people driving on their phones or drunk. Add to this all the drugs people are on, prescription, and or illegal. When I get home, I say: Not today Death. Not today.
Riding between vehicles on the highway is nothing short of stupid. Or in the city..
God bless you bro
Lane splitting/ filtering is illegal in Wisconsin. Also, my bike does not have a "hazards" option. It's kinda old and simple. "Get away from people" life goals lol
If you pay attention and detect Uber, Lyft, Prius and Women drivers, you're doing great for your own safety. Min 9:39 was not one of your best moves in traffic. Just saying.
I just hit 156mph on my 08 fz6 full exhaust intake block offs tuned.
Great Video!
Love that feature on clear waters with the emergency flashers. Unfortunately They don't make a can opener for the Ducati. 25-100% is my only choice for my darlas...
Common sense you would think. Never really adapted lane position based on wind, unless oncoming large truck i move over. Maybe i should. Where i live it is always windy.
RIDDLE ... Happy birthday 🎉🎉 fast Eddie thanks for all you do for us 🤙
Great video! Real world situations!
Great vid👍🏼 Besides road safety, the good ole IPDE process works in other life situations as well. Looked like that husky 15:19 wanted to ride with you!
I disagree on lane position in the carpool lane. I always choose the inner left part of the lane. People can still see me (and my clear waters). That way if some idiot makes a move, I have time to react and not hit them. Also I find myself lane splitting less since I got my Ducati Pike Peak with radar cruise control.
Love the "People are stupid and drunk". However, I have a question as a newbie rider. I am not at all comfortable with Lane splitting in traffic. Isn't that a safety hazard ? I understand taking over a car or 2 to get away from them if they are problematic but lane splitting through 15-20 cars is scary to me as a newbie.
If you don't feel comfortable lane splitting, don't do it. I doubt that I'd do it if it were legal in my state.
"situational awareness" is paramount, but so is riding WITH RESPECT TO TRAFFIC AROUND YOU and don't think that your choice to ride 25 over means that everyone else is obligated to accommodate your choice.
Great video brother
Not so many people riding bikes down there , saw, only one other bike, a chick on the Harley, you would think that with all that nice whether there would have been more, anyway good video as always bro, your right , bike riders make better car drivers.
I'll coin you, "The Nagging Instructor." Great info, but overlook the nagging. 😊
Most people drive the way little kids run around at recess. It's all mindless impulse, with little to no situational awareness. Ya gotta use your head and stay vigilant. "Everybody's drunk and stupid" is how I explain it quickly, too. Malice is out there for sure, but it's floating in a sea of incompetence.
For most of the beginning of this video you seemed to be just blowing past the other drivers. I would think it would be safer to pace the cars you intend to pass before speeding up to do so. That would give them a little more time to even notice you back there wouldn't you think? Otherwise, you're just appearing out of nowhere to them.
