If you want to know the best way to clean and disassemble your OXO salad spinner, keep watching because I’m going to show you. Today I’m talking about my favorite salad spinner, the OXO Good Grips Salad Spinner: how I clean it on a day to day basis, and how to disassemble it in case you need to do a thorough cleaning. There’s 3 methods I use for everyday cleaning: rinsing, dishwasher, and wiping down.
    -----
    Disassembly:
I’m gonna start by making sure that the pump mechanism is unlocked, and then I’m gonna flip the lid upside down. Take a look at these three white tabs. These need to be rotated just slightly into these wider gaps to allow the mechanism to disassemble. Grab a screw-driver or butterknife or anything that will help you put a little pressure on those tabs. Keep alternating between the tabs and putting a little pressure to get them to move, while being careful not to mangle them with too much pressure. Eventually, the apparatus will rotate to your desire (and don't be surprised if this happens rather suddenly, as that's what happened to me). The mechanism will likely spring apart at this point, but if not, just gently pull the pump off of the lid. It should now be in three pieces: the pump, the spring, and the lid. At this point, you’ll be able to use a brush to clean the inside, or a towel to get excess water out, or you can just leave it open to air-dry.
Putting it back together is a little bit tricky, cuz there’s a few things to pay attention to. First, notice the metal corkscrew in the pump; it moves freely, but it will have to be inserted into the white plastic hole in the center of the lid. Second, notice the cutout tabs in the pump and this white ring that will need to be aligned with the locking mechanism. And third, don’t forget to put the spring back in, because you will be very disappointed when your salad spinner doesn’t work without it. Start with putting the spring on, make sure the locking tabs are mostly aligned, and then do your best to get the metal corkscrew in the right place; it might take a couple tries, and if you find it’s aligned but won’t go in for some reason, try rotating the little white piece on the underside of the lid until it works. It’s tricky to do this by yourself, so it might help to have someone else rotate the white piece. Once everything is in place, set it upside down on the counter and grab your screwdriver again to rotate those tabs. Once the tabs are secure, replace your lid on the salad spinner and you are done.

The ring has to be lined up correctly. The tabs have specific holes that they must be inserted in. If you examine the bottom of the ring, you will notice that there is a space which lines up with the black plunger release slide. That space has to lineup with the plunger release slide first. Once you do that, the tabs should move relatively easily. It took me a while to figure that out.

Could you please explain more fully? The black plunger release slide is incrusted in a kind of indention in the lid. It moves a couple of millimeters to and away from the center of the lid, but I don't see any other movement options.

If you have trouble reassembling the top because you can't get the screw/turning mechanism in place, try sitting the top half of the top (with the handle) on a flat surface. The screw should be facing up. Then you can hold the screw in place with a pair of long tweezers and ease the bottom half of the top onto the screw from above.

Watched this video to learn how to clean the top of the salad spinner. Worked like a charm. I used a toothbrush to clean some of the easy to reach spots inside the top but then also used a Water Pik on highest pressure and Q-Tips to clean the hard to reach spots. Thanks for posting.

If you can't shake the lids apart, like me and several others, hold the top of the pump with one hand and pull on the bottom cylinder with the other. It took me a good yank, but it came off. I was able to snap it back on after cleaning, and it still worked. It still won't just shake off.

I used a hairdryer to speed up the drying. I found out as stated, that it's useful to keep rotating the screwdriver on all the tabs and they do suddenly pop out. Constant but not too hard pressure on ALL the tabs while switching.

Thank You Dennis, you helped a lot! I needed to clean and get the mold out of the inside mechanism. A paint brush and long Q-Tips did the trick with soapy hot water. Then air drying. I gotta love that YT! Your video One of the parts came off inside the spinning mechanism, causing it to come apart in a very different way. My oxo fell onto floor and came apart in the middle. No matter what I have to get the top off. But I can't. Have tried your method but those white tabs won't budge, (yes it is unlocked)
Have tried other recommendation pushing both above and below lock slider, no click. Plastic around pump button not very flexible. Would some sort of lubricant, eg silicone help?

Dennis, how can this possibly be your favorite salad spinner when it is so hard to clean the mechanism. Mine got so moldy, after cleaning it and reassembling it, the spinner did not work as well. No household kitchen item should need a screwdriver to clean. Please let us know if there are spinners that do not collect mold.
