FRED here(It's okay to say "Gus") - Now, Caleb forgot a couple of things: The T3 is WAY MORE RELIABLE than a T4‼- Just like the GREAT Nikon L35AW (ActionTouch), NO problematic motorized lens TUCK & POP-OUT. That's the weak point of EVERY other Point & Shoot. He also forgot to mention that like the Yashica T4, the T3 is weather & dust resistant. Add to that, his was serviced - TWO things that the T3 requires is an internal cleaning of the weather resistant filter in front of the wonderful Zeiss glass (Out-gas micro-FOG from adhesives, lubricants & plastics in general) AND AUTO exposure recalibration (They usually waiver to the under-expose side)
The Tessar is one of the oldest corrected lens designs at about 122 years old. Its compact simple lens design uses only 4 elements with high corrective but low light gathering power, keeping it to a 2.8 maximum aperture at the widest but, as you found out, high performance! The Yashica cameras all around have the benefit of a cheaper build and less popular name being paired with top of the line quality Zeiss lenses. Recently tried the FX-3 Super (SLR) with the Zeiss Tessar 45mm f2.8 which is one of the most compact SLR set ups I've ever used and an incredibly unique lens rendering. You can get that whole setup for about $300.
I absolutely love the colors throughout this post. Both video and the stills, the greens were better than I would have expected, the wood tones glowing with rich yellow and brown, the sand was not boring. You make art out of common refuse and encroaching nature. Yes, that camera was a performer up to the task. I'm impressed with how you knew its limits and capabilities and got apparently the right framing over and over. I'm not crazy about film point and shoots because they tend to be rather approximate without the immediate feedback. Fascinating how the middle version got the fastest lens.
Appreciate the kind words. 🥰 I really never knew those color were possible with that camera. Like I say in the video, I wasn't initially impressed with the feel but the results talk for themselves :)
Picked mine up at a Goodwill for $14. Nine Nine like 4 years ago. I'm glad it wasn't hyped up years ago it really is the definition of hidden gem overshadowed by it's slimmer sister the T4. Tri-X looks really great with this lens, speaking in Leica terms if you shoot a lower ISO speed film the camera will start using the lens wide open and unlocks it's "character" mode with a slightly softer rendering. Ummm so good.
Lovely video as always. I miss the '90s when I shot lots of film and worked at a camera counter as a kid. Ever shoot digital alongside film to show how film captures a special look?
Been looking for something to replace my Konica c35 Ef, this looks like the prefect thing! Hopefully can get one thanks for another excellent episode of BadFlashes
Incredible timing, I just got one of these before a trip to another state in Australia after I couldn't find a decent working M42 mount camera in my local area. Great camera, great lens. Although mine is a little glitchy, it doesn't auto load the film when you close the back, it's either after opening the lens cover or pressing the shutter button once.
"mine is a little glitchy" - FRED hereYes, most Point & Shoot cameras with some age (a couple of decades etc.) like any precision Rolex watch, do require some service. I love cameras with extra viewfinders, they're super fun! I have myself a Canon Prisma Date - its a point and shoot that has a normal viewfinder as well as a waist level finder on the top somewhat similar to this one. The Waist level finder requires you to hold it within a certain range away from your eyes and above your knees(near your waist, shocker!) for it to be in focus, but it works great. It also have a little adjustable nubbin on the bottom to allow you to set it up on a flat surface at an angle, or a non-flat surface level, and has a detatchable IR remote to control the shutter! Its got a bit of a goofy shape just like this T3 does, so not many people pick them up because it's not an 'attractive' camera, but I leave mine in my hoodie pocket or backpack with me wherever I go, even if I've got a nicer camera with me just for some extra versatility. UGLY CAMERAS UNITE! Weird review for the thing not even in the video aside, I love watching your content and seeing how much fun you have when you're out in the field and after when you're filming your talking head shots. You and Jason are two of the biggest reasons I jumped into film photography(was previously a Polaroid only shooter) and I really appreciate the work you put into your videos. Keep up the great work!
