I currently owned an eventide space, blue sky. el capistan, empress superdelay vintage modified, etc... Ive literally owned every strymon effect pedal except the ob1 and the big sky(sometimes bought, then sold, then bought again and sold). I buy pedals literally every month. I am a tone snob that was schooled when my 70cdr showed up at the door. I heard good things about this but was not expecting this kind of quality from Zoom. I literally put my space, empress, as well as DD20 up on ebay after i've played with this 70CDR for a bit. I mean really.... Some effects granted i'll never use, but the effects were so spot on or close enough for me to make a decision to buy a couple of these and pocket some cash by trimming the fat. I'll keep the el capistan and blue sky just for snobby purposes and because i do love strymon. But who knows..
I too was blown away by the ms70CDR. I went and got the ms50 & 60 too, though the amp mods are pretty useless. In hindsight, the CDR is really the only one u need. The other two don't really offer much that u cant get on the CDR. And when it comes to noise, I'll ALWAYS prefer my fave Muff (civil war) and DOD's (Corrosion & Fat Pig). But for Chorus, delay and Reverb (CDR), this Zoom is mind blowing!!!!! I use mine on everything: p.a., vocals when recording, analogue synths (monologue and MiniBrute), bass, it really sounds GREAT on drums in the p.a. sub mix for rehearsals and gigs!!! Buy 3, you won't be disappointed.
Brad Walter the zoom sounds amazing and there are also several controllers available some just to scroll through presets and bypass and some you can store 8 presets or more on. Just missed one on reverb that came with a four button controller for 115. I have the zoom r24 multitrack/interface and it has some amazing guitar effects. Especially the auto swell and delays and reverbs
I have the ms100bt and a little trick I did with shimmer was to actually not use the shimmer algorithm but combine an octave with a reverb. To me this made the sound sweeter, warmer with more control of the octave effect. That is the beuuty of these pedals - combining effects In series. It works more often than you would think. To be honest though for strict shimmer I actually love my Mr. black Eterna gold.
I have both, but mainly bought the Zoom to use as the guitar cab to record direct (and not worry about the problems of miking. With patience (and a bit of tweaking), it's quite possible to get some really amazing sounds out of it. I like it, and doubled with the Neunaber Stereo Wet it's WELL worth the money! Thanks for this review. Peace.
Last summer I almost bought a pair of Strymons but instead I bought a Deepmind 12 with built-in FX. I made the wise choice monetarily while the synth and its built-in FX are not too bad either! I had already owned the ZOOM MS70 CDR but I've never paired it with the DM12. I use it mostly with my Korg Monologue and an Ultranova. I might pair the ZOOM and DM12 for the shimmer effect after watching this demo.
I just bought a used Zoom MS-70CDR today for a grand total of $30. Steal of a deal! I'm sorry, I understand that the Strymon is a fine pedal and all, but there is no chance that it is worth the price difference when the audible difference is so small between these two pedals. I generally stay away from blanket statements, but anyone that is finding things to nitpick about with the Zoom pedal against the Strymon are just trying to justify spending $200 more for a pedal with VERY minor differences.
Holy shit man 30 bucks! O_O I bought mine a few months ago brand new and even then at 120€ (about the same in dollar i think) is still a no brainer. In your case that's a SUPER UBER DEAL! good stuff
My Zoom MS-70 arrived yesterday afternoon. I bought it mostly because of your video. It's my first FX pedal. I almost bought the Blue Sky but I saved a bundle that I can spend on other gear, maybe another pedal... Last night I spent about 3 hours playing with it and my Korg Monologue and Volca Keys. I cannot stress enough how much I really like the Zoom pedal. I'm glad I bought it. I had no idea how much it improves the sonic capabilities of my other synths as well. I have yet to connect it to my Deepmind 12 since it has amazing FX already but I'm going to do it very soon just for comparison purposes.
Well, this is just the shimmer effect in action on the ZOOM unit, you can combine it with other effects to achieve a more interesting and complex resulting sound... I just have one and started to sell the expensive ones...lol
I'm blown away... Really am. Zoom brand is so underrated for their stuff and they make amazing stuff. I had a Zoom drum machine and this thing sounded exactly like a Roland 808. It even had many more neat features. However I still went out and bought a 808. I then sold my Zoom and completely regret it. I paid 6x times for an authentic as apposed to a amazing moc that was just fine. Glad I learned that lesson years ago. Even since I bought an amazing Zoom field recorder and many other Zoom devices. I'm no guitarist, but was looking into amazing pedals to enhance my synth. You've blown me away with this demo. Shuffles feet to used pro audio store.....
The zoom is really a very good pedal with incredible capacity for its price. Placed in the effects loop on her pedalboard she works really well. I have 1 year and I do not get tired. It must be cleared all the original presets because it is the right to give an example and start from scratch. I made 30 presets including 5 special pink floyd etc ... In concert you can easily and easily change presets with the feet. Buy it really
Wow it's been a year since I got here. I currently own the latest from Zoom, the G3N. It's what I use right now for modulations and time-based effects. The only problem with that thing is Zoom haven't improved the Spring Reverb effect there. And I'm still waiting for them to add some 'botique' based delays and reverb like the Ice Delay and Shimmer Reverb.
I have always wanted to buy a Strymon Bluesky but it's very expensive. But now, I can finally get it's sound with this new Zoom product! Damn! Thanks for showing this man ;)
i actually preferred the zoom for most of it and at that price its a steal

I scrolled down so I wouldn't see which one was being used and honestly I couldn't tell for the most part which one was on. Listen with your ears not your eyes.
Loved it at 5:20 when both pedals were engaged. My near-field speakers nearly imploded during the blending of sonic artifacts. I wonder how they would sound with some feedback looping? Spacey ambient or evil darkness? Somewhere in-between...?
That was an excellent " no shit" demo of the two. I have a brand new Zoom cdr70 and was thinking of getting the Blue sky. I am senior in years and my high frequencies have deteriorated but I honestly cannot pick up on any difference. I will just keep the Zoom and spend the Blue sky money on a couple of new Volcas. Thanks very much for that very simple video but so informative.
Im a pro sound engineer im sorry to say this with humble im saying this.. i watched this video 3 times and i have my conclusion now "ZOOM" got decent sounds to stay in a mix ! Strymon just overpriced and "overacting" ;)
The zoom is an amazing and a super versatile pedal at a crazy cheap price point. My only complaint is the interface its quite annoying, but well, you eventually get used to.
You wrote exactly the content I was to write before I saw your comment,@artemortis "keep in mind that not everybody needs an all-around processor. I am an acoustic player and I don't care about amp simulation or distorition. This unit has only the effects I actually need and more of them. I am glad I didn't buy a 50G right away - I'm definetely getting this one. So just think about what effects you really need and make your choice based on this" I´m gonne get me this Zoom - even though I was hungry for the HardwireSupernaturalAmbientVerb.
Just one simple thought. I finally got today the Blue Sky but I used to use the Zoom for almost 3 years now. Speaking of sounds, the two pedals are VERY VERY similar in almost all settings (except spring, mod and shimmer). But let's think about every other aspect: - Strymon has better AD/DA converter and you can definitely hear the difference in the dry signal; is very well made, solid and robust; every knob is tweakable in real time without scrolling anything. - Zoom has a shitload of effects, many of them are very nice sounding indeed. But if they have to improve the converter, put some knob and switches for a better live use, fine tune the simulations, the final price would be much higher than 120€ I guess. In conclusion Strymon is topclass, Zoom is a fantastic swiss-army knife with a very competitive price tag.
Nothing straight up beats the Strymon stuff, but this is absolutely the closest I've heard imo, I've probably watched 200 videos comparing Big/Blue Skies to other stuff. This is phenomenal. Zoom is a fantastic company for the budget minded player.
I bought a MS60B (the red one for bass) as a backup and use some fx in small gigs. Obviously is not the real deal, but ... What do you expect for less than 100 bucks? . It has a decent tuner (amazingly accurate) , sounds great and fits in my gigbag. When it's time to go to a small gig it does the job and it's a space saver on small stages.
hi Guy. i bought a moog sub37 last january and a bit too spontaneous i also bought the bigsky. after 3 months and using it on several tracks i sold it, i think 500 Euro was a bit much for just a reverb. but, i do miss the shimmer and magneto. you think if i buy this zoom i will be happy again, using the shimmer on my moog? you think its just as good as the big- or bluesky? and does it have magneto?
Could you tell the difference after the signal travels from the microphone on the amp/modeler, to the mixing board, through the PA and then shaped by whatever the physical acoustics of the room do to the sound waves? Do you think the audience would be able to tell? Especially if there are drums as well? I doubt it. Save your money and spend it on a month of guitar lessons from a good teacher instead. If you don't already have one.
I have on my pedal board the Chorus essemble and the DD3 both from Boss, would it be wise to sell these two pedals and replace them with the MS 70 zoom?
The Blue Sky is noticeably better in that the processing is "smoother?" - but not by a great deal. Certainly not $300 bucks better. I've been so impressed with the Zoom. It's got the "I have a tube amp with an effects loop, and i don't want a shitload of pedals for sounds I don't use often enough to justify spending $1000 on boo-teek pedals" market absolutely cornered. I'm not a pedal snob in the first place, so I listen with my ears rather than with my pride. The Zoom has replaced a Source Audio Orbital Modulator, a Line 6 Echo Park delay, and a Boss 63 spring reverb pedal on my board and I haven't sacrificed any tone quality over those pedals. After selling them I've paid for the Zoom thrice.
Cooool, I have the Zoom, but I never appreciated it for what it is, I put it on one preset and left it there for ever. I hevent even listened to all the different fx inside. And it was dirt cheap (100 Euro) peace.
SWANbeats1 Oh, they’ll have their people who will always buy their stuff no matter how much it costs. I see guys at church every single Sunday with $1000 worth of Strymon Big Sky and Timeline. The Zoom MS50g works just fine for me.
ZOOM MS-70 CDR is a really great pédal...but it sucks your tone a bit...use it with a line selector as a switch when you need effects in your effects-loop.
I have the Zoom ms70cdr & the ms50g which i mix with the EHX TRI-Parallel Mixer. The combined cost of these pieces of magic outperforms all the Strymon stuff & at a more competitive price. Zoom are horribly underrated in the pedal business as they don't do bells/whistles
I read here comments comparing the Zoom and the BlueSky but the video is only comparing the Shimmer FX in both, which is far from comparing the 2 units.
really? the one spot can handle the awkward 500ma power? Thanks for showing off the pedal, i'm curious if you've had any experience with the wet reverb or if the zoom has any reverbs that compare to it?
After hearing this video with my ears, not my eyes, ZOOM is impressive. I don't have any Strymon effects but I do have the EVENTIDE H9 that I can compare the ZOOM to. It compares very well with the H9. No need to buy a Strymon or even an Eventide if you want to save money and have quality sounds. Way to go ZOOM.
the reverb tails on the zoom is brighter, on the blue sky is smoother. it really depends on your preference, but to me personally the smoother tail on the blue sky is better because it will not clash with the original sound
Search on youtube "Zoom ms-70cdr hack" and watch the video. Follow the instructions and fill your ms-70cdr with all effects from the Zoom ms line. Quite easy.
I own two of these and mooer ocean machine.. Strymon sounds great but it's overpriced. Listen, use your ears. Preset players love the Strymon and wear the brand price snobby like a fashion. The MS70-cdr is a monster for the programmable possiblies. The sound quality is fantastic with a low noise floor and multiple chained effects and routing make it hands down better. Is the shimmer better? It's subjective and can't be qualified properly in mono.
Can someone please show me one decent song where shimmer is used effectively? I can only think of the edge using it once. Has to be the absolute cheesiest garbage out there. Is everyone in p&w band?
since your frame of reference for musicians is U2 i'll assume you don't know that thousands of ambient and experimental electronic artists exist and use reverb as a sound design tool to create space and granular texture
Had a zoom. Sold it to “upgrade” my pedals. Honestly, there is little noticeable difference between the two. If you actually make music and don’t just noodle in your room, in a mix you wouldn’t notice anyway. The price difference of £300 is not worth it. I’m selling my “pro” gear and buying another zoom and using the cash for other things. It feels to me, people are just trying to justify the price tag for what is essentially a ‘luxury’ brand. It’s a no brainier.
I love the MS-70, but the shimmer model is awful. The pitch tracking is so bad that on some notes it just flat out plays out of tune. I have tried many settings on the shimmer model, and I can get some usable patches, but overall I just avoid it.
Dumb question, but did you ever toy with the other pages of the buttons to access the different settings for the shimmer mode, so you could accurately set all the knobs? I ask just because that could've been why it was unusable, otherwise, you could be right about it not tracking very well.
I messed with all the settings. And I was being a little harsh. It is usable if you blend it with other effects within the MS-70. I now own a Boss RV-6 and I can tell you for certain that the tracking on the shimmer model on the MS-70 is indeed flawed. It seems to track incorrectly regardless of the setting. The MS-70 is an awesome pedal regardless.
Seems like nowadays most online retailers are selling them new for $129.99 U.S. I just purchased a new one from a certified ZOOM retailer on eBay ( 100% positive feedback ) after they offered me a Buy It Now price of only $115 with free expedited shipping. Good thing I got it when I did as they only had 1 left after my purchase.
If you have used and experienced high end pedals these sort of low budget multi things are something a more inexperienced player might find extraordinary. I find it extra-ordinary. A lot of crap does not make for a single great sounding one thing. If you like cheap pedals and think quality is a waste of money then this is your puppy.
I guess you must be the only one who has any idea what you're talking about. How do you draw such assumptions off a stupid badly done "demo" or comments? This pedal is not very good, I have one and happen to know it is a $100 pedal and if you think it's as good as a Styrmon, the you must think a lot of things that have no basis in reality. Maybe you're suffering from latent homosexual traits as how does any of that figure into a more professional who understands high end gear is just better. Like your K mart guitar I'll take my Les Paul's any day. As for your "fag" problem, see a therapist, I am not gay but I do not see what that has to do with quality technology. If you think a $100 pedal is on par w a Strymon you must also be a Trump voter as well as a "fag" hating bigot. Stupid has a range of plausible indications.
Cheap and stupid is a way of life. Not within my paradigm. There is one thing I know about life, you get what you pay for and cheap is cheap. You might love your Kia economy car and your house trailer. If that is your level of life and your cheap ass pedals and guitar rig. You have a great time. I enjoy my Mercedes and Les Paul's and I know from my past being poor how much better they really are. This latency issue you have of calling everyone gay or queer reflects what a dumbass you are. My wife is hotter than any chick you've ever imagined you had, if you indeed are into girls.
Mercedes and Les Pauls...Jesus....you must have a huge dong too. i bet with those assets your hot wife is sooo proud.. You really do come off as a libtard, mindless douchebag.
***** Totally agree, but an attack on someone who didn't talk politics and assumes that they must be a pro-Trump idiot is, in of itself, libtarded! Don't get me wrong, Trump is not MY leader, but he is exactly the kind of role model Mr. Les Paul Mercedes aspires to be, what with his Strymons and his Eventides. Nothing wrong with those pedals, though the price and its customers are drinking the Kool-Aid.
Well, keep in mind that not everybody needs an all-around processor. I am an acoustic player and I don't care about amp simulation or distorition. This unit has only the effects I actually need and more of them. I am glad I didn't buy a 50G right away - I'm definetely getting this one. So just think about what effects you really need and make your choice based on this.
To me it's clear that the Zoom has too many uneven harmonics. It sounds so unnatural and out of tune. Same problem with most reverb pedals. The Strymon nails it though. Perfect pedal. If you're on a budget however and don't care about uneven harmonics, then the Zoom is the best bang for the buck.
It's a great pedal. I don't care much about the uneven harmonics simply because the audience doesn't either. Nobody during a live show is going to notice at all. You don't need to be on a budget for this pedal either. One just needs to write a great song and this pedal will do nicely. The Bluesky Strymon costs three times as much so no doubt owners of that pedal are going to justify their purchase til the cows come home. It's up to your own ear. Enjoy!
+tammanaq I totally get what you're saying, the Zoom is just a smidge off from the Strymon. If you're using this for a synth effect and the target listening experience is with headphones, it makes a big difference, if you know what to listen for. That being said, the Zoom is just way too good for the money to pass up!
Sorry campers but the effects quality in this little puppy is not very good. OK for the bucks and if you have nothing else, but like a Strymon oh come on. It does do a couple things really well. Has a really good ZNR noise gate, and the EP3 preamp is really good which is always on without the delay on if you toggle it but a really nice sounding EP3 preamp version. No adjustments on the preamp just on or off. Phaser is workable but in all honesty this is not that great of a pedal. Has a really profound digital stale very unanalog sound to the effects, which Strymon and others DO NOT have. But it is only a $120 something, you get what you pay for. For the cost it is expected but if you think the higher end stuff is not way better you are just being duped by over modulated noodling.
I’ve used the Zoom for a live ambient show in Poland and the result was stunning.
Andrew Lagowski nice nice 👍
The zoom is an absolute ambient MACHINE. So much value in something of a budget pedal

holy shit that was dirt cheap. I got mine for 90 dollars
My Zoom MS-70 arrived yesterday afternoon. I bought it mostly because of your video. It's my first FX pedal. I almost bought the Blue Sky but I saved a bundle that I can spend on other gear, maybe another pedal...

really?? nice comparison, its almost 98% identical to a very expensive pedal. zoom nailed it! really amazing. thanks to the demo. Cheers!!

To be honest, the Zoom does the job really well for the price. And for me, Zoom must release a G3 sized MS-70CDR.
+Edward Mendoza I got the G5 and dont like the menu system even though its close its not the same
Edward Mendoza that would be awesome, but only if zoom hears us
Wow it's been a year since I got here. I currently own the latest from Zoom, the G3N. It's what I use right now for modulations and time-based effects. It's called Zoom MS50G
i think they should at least add a control input so we can control our routing hands-free with additional buttons...
Nice comparison. Thanks for making this video. Both pedals sound great.
I have always wanted to buy a Strymon Bluesky but it's very expensive. But now, I can finally get it's sound with this new Zoom product! Damn! Thanks for showing this man ;)
i use the ms70cdr on my bass for our postrock band. killer!
Me too, very good.
MS-60B is more useful for bass
i actually preferred the zoom for most of it and at that price its a steal

Agreed.
Agreed too.
The Neunbar Seriphim or how ever you spell it blows them both away. Although might not have existed when this video was made
Yep. Someone said the Strymon has great harmonics. Not really. I would also really expect a better envelope for that kind of money.
I really like this new Zoom pedals, for the price it's like to be a good option.
just got mine today...MS70CDR of course :) thanks to this demo

Zoom MS70CDR. Very tempting!
which configuration shimmer effect? You can pass the pre set? please

After selling them I've paid for the Zoom thrice.
a Vox Night Train 15 through a Weber Blue Alnico, all the CD70CDR videos are with that amp and cab so far!
Cooool, I have the Zoom, but I never appreciated it for what it is, I put it on one preset and left it there for ever. I hevent even listened to all the different fx inside. And it was dirt cheap (100 Euro) peace.
a little late, but: check out "tonelib.net/" !!!! This will show you what this pedal is capable of... great piece of software!!!!
Great Sounds. What guitar are you playing?
I bet the guys at Strymon are happy about this...
Lol
SWANbeats1 Oh, they’ll have their people who will always buy their stuff no matter how much it costs. I see guys at church every single Sunday with $1000 worth of Strymon Big Sky and Timeline. The Zoom MS50g works just fine for me.
Hello do you have setting for Zoom MS70 CDR?
ZOOM MS-70 CDR is a really great pédal...but it sucks your tone a bit...use it with a line selector as a switch when you need effects in your effects-loop.
I actually bought this pedal just for this function and particle reverb.
Wonderful A/B testing!
WOW!? its very very close! at least from what we can hear in your demos.
have you done any more sound comparisons with the tones from the ms70cdr?
Whoa bibili ka rin? WHOA WHOA WHOA. Congrats mehn!
Wow, the zoom sounds just as good in the vid!
Very very similar and at about a third of the price of the Strymon, the Zoom is a no-brainer.
Now how about a version of the Strymon Lex,Mr.Zoom?
I read here comments comparing the Zoom and the BlueSky but the video is only comparing the Shimmer FX in both, which is far from comparing the 2 units.
MegaBrebis I see what your saying
Can I set my ms 50g as your MS 70 cdr?
You can hack
really? the one spot can handle the awkward 500ma power? Thanks for showing off the pedal, i'm curious if you've had any experience with the wet reverb or if the zoom has any reverbs that compare to it?
After hearing this video with my ears, not my eyes, ZOOM is impressive. I don't have any Strymon effects but I do have the EVENTIDE H9 that I can compare the ZOOM to. It compares very well with the H9. No need to buy a Strymon or even an Eventide if you want to save money and have quality sounds. Way to go ZOOM.
Thanks 👍 i have my zoom g3x ,pod hd500x and tomorrow my isp decimator noise reduction 2 🙏 the necesary to my good sound
the reverb tails on the zoom is brighter, on the blue sky is smoother. it really depends on your preference, but to me personally the smoother tail on the blue sky is better because it will not clash with the original sound
I cannot connect this zoom cdr unit with korg ax 3000 multi effects
Hi sir.. This zoom have same amp simulator like MS-50 ?
No
Search on youtube "Zoom ms-70cdr hack" and watch the video. Follow the instructions and fill your ms-70cdr with all effects from the Zoom ms line. Quite easy.
Parameters for ms70cdr please?
Really goodddddd competition !
in spite of not much like the zoom products, their review was incredible, if you can show the parameters will be happy.
+William Miguel Pereira I dont have the exact parameters, but its super easy to dial in use your ears.
Guy Capuano OK thank you.
I got the CDR the blackhole hole is awesome!💫😵
been eyeing this pedal just because of the shimmer, cant seem to replicate the sound in my zoom g3
loving this zoom, need one.
does the zoom ms70 suck your tone/vol noticeably?
yes it does a little, just place it in a looper
+DJU Clinic Not really man i have it one the end of my chain on my performance board, all gravy.
Great demo thanks!
Is everyone in p&w band?
since your frame of reference for musicians is U2 i'll assume you don't know that thousands of ambient and experimental electronic artists exist and use reverb as a sound design tool to create space and granular texture
shimmer is cheesy as hell, it is much better to use octaver before reverb
how do you power the zoom?
What set of Pedals did you use for Zoom?
It’s a no brainier.
loving that zoom, what guitar/amp did you use for this test?
BLUE SKY.... PERIOD!
Im sold,,,gotta get me Zoom ms70...
Make a Blind test
Ahh 80's U2 goodness.
It's for the people like me who can't afford an eventide or strymon :)
SOLD. MINES IN THE POST.
+pantoum Damn. I was hoping to pick one up and throw in my pedalboard fx loop. I'm still curious just for the price and to save space.
I'd recommend getting one even though the shimmer model is not so good. Just about every other model is great. The pedal is well worth the money.
How's the reverse reverb?
ya man your welcome
bloody ell
sounds almost identical to the strymon
Seems like nowadays most online retailers are selling them new for $129.99 U.S. I just purchased a new one from a certified ZOOM retailer on eBay ( 100% positive feedback ) after they offered me a Buy It Now price of only $115 with free expedited shipping. Good thing I got it when I did as they only had 1 left after my purchase.
a regular old one spot
Lol amazing...
+William Miguel Pereira Happy or mad?
Strymon The best
Wow
Well, having electric windows was a big deal, once.
Lol amazing......
i pick Zoom
hahaahah
Enjoy!
"uneven harmonics" lol .. Yeah, like that shimmer sound is "natural". Now go sniff that cork for more
Jim Atwood That's the point. Most of the times , the audience doesn't notice those subtle differences...
If you tryout mooer shimverb , you'll realize how ''uneven harmonics'' annoying are......I think zoom gets very close to strymon.Sounds great.
