The Smothers Brothers Show wasa place to refuge durbng the Vietnam War. They would not compromise in their Freedom of Speech and it was wonderful to 18 and 19 year old me. They were canceled from CBS unjustly, but their message still resonates in my soul.

Country and Western comes out of English folk. Blues, Jazz, Rock originate out of Slave music, same root as the Spiritual music they spoke of here. So they were on the money with that remark.
There's an earlier version where they sing the song relatively "straight", except that at the end, Tommy says : "C'mon, Michael, row that boat ashore....there's a deposit on it!"
@@eugenedegeorge5084 Did you find it Eugene. I recently purchased the Album/mp3 file on Amazon. Could not believe it was recorded in 1966 So unique, gentlemen, excellent hosts, folksingers, balladeers, so fortunate to be the complete package comedically, musically. Dick released an album (also on RUclips, I believe.)
@Elizabeth Beckman Hello Elizabeth. I thought your comment was kind of funny because in 1966, I was 12 years old. I remember when that album came out, which is why I made the post. Unfortunately, vinyl albums in those days were very expensive. You usually put your money toward 45s instead. Thanks for the post, though. I'm actually thinking of buying the vinyl album,. I still have a record player to play it on, so maybe I'll finally get to buy the album I couldn't buy all those years ago.😊
God Bless you! If you see the lyrics of the song it mentions the Jordan River and land of Milk and Honey! It is a Christian Spiritual song that also Slaves in America sang in 1860’s
Their characters confused me when they fought. Later videos, like this one, you can see how they loved to set each other up. Twinkling eyes and smiles, plus when they harmonize it has a very special quality. Blended chocolate and strawberry.

@@diamonddog13 This was 1988? I was only 13 but I remember 88 and 89 as having better graphics. This looks like it was in the 70s for some reason. either way, I love the Smothers Brothers
That is simply a misinformed statement, or it seems. These guys were consistently kicking the man in the nuts, and in those days this stuff was important. Many fought and died in a war where many spoke out, and unfortunately far too many were killed on our own soil. And I also enjoy their song renditions. I also love Riverside, Porcupine Tree, and Mason Williams, who was the head writer for SB for a season, during which he introduced his hit song, "Classical Gas." Other writers include Steve Martin, Rob Reiner, and Albert Brooks. Perhaps you might consider taking a new look with the understanding of the times.

Just on a whim, I looked this up and see that Tommy Smothers died a few days ago. Now I’m sad.
Rest In Peace Tommy, Thanks for the Laughs..."Eggs Over Easy" We'll keep singing along
RIP Tom Smothers 1937-2023
💖💞🌠🌠🌹😔😔😢
They were funny guys and almost always right in what they said and how they said it. Miss those days.
This is the truth, the rose , saved my life. and changed it.
RIP Tommy you were genuinely one of a kind.
Tommy's eyes were so expressive! A duo incomparable then and now.
I dated a guy briefly in college (2013) and he got a Smothers Brothers reference I made... I shoulda freakin' married him. I messed up.
Gotta know - what was the reference?

I really like the Highwaymen with this song. But the Smothers and their version puts them alongside the Highwaymen. God bless them. R.I.P.
You sure should have!
I can make a Smothers Brothers reference. Marry me!
If I ever need a good laugh, I pull up one of their videos. Thanks guys so much 😂
Yep Me too 😀😅😂👍
Today's St Michael day.Thank you for playing this.
My god these guys have the best harmony ever! I would really love to hear these songs played straight, no comedy. That would be gold.
Listen to Stella's Got a New Dress or Apples Peaches and Cherries. Just one punch line at the end of AP&C but both are great.
i think they did an album called The Smothers Brothers Play It Straight.

Like the Everly brothers, Tom and Dick had that great sibling harmony. Nobody ever talks about it. They were good musicians also.

I loved this song, in a suppressed way, because I was teased about it back then, but in a nice way, yet I was shy enough I kept my love for it secret.
I love these guys.
Was humming this tune so I looked it up. Glad I found this one, I had forgotten how fun they were....

You are half right -- they were good singers. But if you don't think they were funny, you need to take a course in true comedy.
