From my own research, I had read that Bretons were the French Gaels from Brittany, France. It stated to be north-west of France, but part of the country. The Breton language is, from what I've read, closely related to Cornish and Welsh. But yes, it is pretty cool. The Elder Scrolls games actually has the race of Bretons, who are descended from druids. I love the real life historical ties that was put into the games. Good RPGs are rich in historical research.

No, they're not of Gaelic descent. The Bretons are of Cornish descent; together with the Welsh, the three groups are descendants of the Brythonic people. The modern Irish, Manx, and the Scottish Gaels are descended from the original Gaelic/Goidelic people in Ireland. All of them are Celtic though, of course.

In my own research, I'd discovered that Bretons were French Gaelic. That is why it is similar to the Gaelic you're used to hearing. Just like the UK has their own Gaelic ties, so does France. It just hasn't been very popular to hear of the French Gaels. I was impressed when I had heard of Bretons in Bethesda's TES games. Apparently they're of druid decent in them.

Cornish and Breton are both Brythonic(P-celtic) languages. They are more related to Welsh than to French. French does draw from Gaulish and Belgae, but is primarily derived from Latin.

@anotherlook Breton is a Celtic Language, and French has both Latin and Celtic roots.
The way we pronounce many words in French containing "u", "on" "an" "in", is a direct heritage of Breton.

Of course, modern Breton has evolved, and that's the proof that it IS a living language, adapting to the modern world, contrary to what some people think... That's the normal evolution of a language, as French use german or english words.

@rivelen7777777 c'est parce que la France est le pays le plus culturellement centralisé depuis l'Ancien Régime, la Révolution et les institutions des jacobins imposant le français comme langue nationale et unique. Près de deux siècles à écraser les cultures régionales dans l'espoir de créer un pays soudé. On devrait être un peu soulagé que l'Etat est au moins essayé de lâcher du lest depuis les 30 glorieuses, même si très peu.

Il ne faut pas non plus exagérer: la Bretagne est depuis longtemps intégrée à la France qui tolère de nombreuses particularités régionales, dont l'enseignement et la diffusion de la culture et de la langue... Breton language is NOT forbidden in France. It is only a matter of politics.
@rivelen7777777 La France reconnait l'existence des minorités mais veut en garder le contrôle sans en référer à l'UE. Ce qui n'empêche pas l'existence d'un certain nombre de particularités régionales. Et puis tous les bretons ne seraient pas spécialement ravis de faire partie d'une minorité ethnique: un Breton est aussi Français. L'Histoire de ces deux pays est étroitement liée depuis des siècles sinon des millénaires.
Faut pas oublier que la Bretagne était un Pays avant que la France en soit un .
La Bretagne était un pays de la Loire atlantique au finister . Cote Armor et Ile et villaine . Alors que La France n'était rien a cette époque .
Je n'aime pas ce terme de langue minoritaire.
Je préfère celui de langues régionales, qui font partie de l'histoire du pays, qui ont façonné son histoire et qui doivent vivre au futur, comme une richesse, au même titre que le Français. Les Gallois ont compris cela.
nul n'a attaché de sabots au cou des Gallois lorsqu'ils parlaient leur vieille langue celtique, ici en Bretagne si, ce sont les représentants de la raie publique des droits à la gomme qui ont fait cela, honte à eux ! eux qui osent s'auto-proclamer défenseurs des libertés
