      Yeah, the original game was just meh. The remakes ruined it further. My favorite Final Fantasy games will always be the first six. FF7 departed from the fantasy plot of the series (it seemed like) - and yet it wasn't really THAT bad though, it's just, well you know. Don't know completely about the rest of the series, since that was as far as I have got - however, might try the other games (FF8-Present) someday.
      However, Secret of Mana was really good despite all of the glitches. Never forgot this game - best in its series. Now that Trials of Mana finally came out here in the States (as with the rest of the world), I recommend it too.

    I love Secret of Mana.
    I get why you hate it though.
    The problem with the game was programming. Multiplying enemies would keep multiplying at an unlimited amount, after a hit, the characters would freeze, AI controlled characters would get stuck, once you or an enemy casted wall, wall repelled ALL magic, even if it helped you or the enemy out (Mech Rider part 3....cough cough). So yeah! Once you realize the flaws in the programming, you can adapt, but its something to get used to.
    Nasir Gebelli finally got his work visa back in order to get back to working for Square again, only to find that he was obsolete in the move over from 8 bit to 16 bit. Square liked Nasir, but he was done and they knew it (he retired completely from programming after that).

    I think the problem with the Psx Final Fantasy games is that despite the polygonal upgrade, the gameplay was still firmly entrenched with it's predecessors (flaws and all). Playing Secret of Mana single player is super easy if you learn to adjust the AI behavior from the menu, and never forget that you can switch between the multiple characters at any time if they get stuck. I literally can't even imagine finding it difficult or frustrating considering you can take control over every aspect at any time. That doesn't mean I don't feel like Mana hasn't aged as well as some other classics, but it's still great in many ways. And I still prefer it to any turned based titles of the era.

    • @Fortefyre
      @Fortefyre  4 месяца назад

      digimon world is actually pretty good, it is grindy, but its a great exploration based world. not only that but seeing the city grow as you find more people, and those people contributing to making the city, and your journey easier is great. it is a bit trial and error, with trying to get some digimons, but its also very rewarding. dot hack is a single player mmo simulator. its kinda like ff12, but set in a mmo setting and dressing.
      its not that great, all things considered, but its far from being the worst, even on the ps2 library(like for example the second ps2 arc the lad game, or grandia xtreme). dark cloud is also kinda weird since its mostly an action rpg, that is pretty well regarded, with many fans actually unable to pick which of the 2 games is better.

    Digimon World: Next Order is one you might not hate as much.
    While there is still the life cycle management, and yes, your partners will die, there are a couple of things that make it less aggravating.
    The facilities you build in town, and the perks your trainer acquires, both make it easier to raise new 'mons.
    Early on, one monster you recruit, gives you a free portable loo every in-game day. Also, your partners do have certain times when they'll want to go. So while that aspect is still there, it's not quite as obnoxious, once you catch on.
    If you think of the life cycle management as a roguelike, it makes a little more sense.

    • @Fortefyre
      @Fortefyre  4 месяца назад +1

      That's a really good point actually

    • @ToABrighterFuture
      @ToABrighterFuture 4 месяца назад

      @@Fortefyre And just to add to the thought: If you look under Partner > History (this is Next Order on PS4 I'm referring to), for the first few 'mons in training, you'll be told exactly what attributes you need to raise, to get them up to Rookie. After that, the information gets hidden.
      Early on, the best way to reveal it, is with interactions (praising, scolding, and the like). Once a 'mon Digivolves, all that information unlocks permanently. And there are some 'mons that you can get via multiple different routes, so sometimes an old friend might show up out of nowhere, and you'll have all the information you need to acquire it. Again, kinda roguelike in its own way.
      Also of note, one of the stats on each 'mon is TF: Trainer Failures. That happens if you fail to feed your partner, don't let it go to the can, or keep it up too far past its bedtime. There are some 'mons you can't get, if that stat is zero. Not all of those are worth getting, but some are.
      There is a definite method to the madness in Digimon World, and the learning curve is admittedly brutal. But once you "get" how it all works together, it's a ton of fun.
      It's got a quirky combination of game elements, but that can be a double-edged sword: some players enjoy the change of pace, some find it frustrating.
      I won't guarantee you'll ever like the original, knowing all this, or that you'll like Next Order if you ever choose to play it. It's definitely a love it or hate it kind of game, and there are ways it can make itself hard to love.

    I love the hell out of Secret of Mana, but I also know it's flawed; the AI is not the worst problem in the game, as you don't have to rely on them in combat once you've learned how to switch characters quickly, leaving only the terrible pathing (which is not typically game breaking, though if a character gets caught in an area out of bounds, you might have to summon the dragon or use a rope to reset the area, which is time-wasting). I've probably played it for 200 hrs. in my life (on the SNES, I grinded each character up to 99 and all the weapons and spells up to max), and the most frustrating elements is just how much of a time-sink even basic combat can be, probably my biggest pet peeve in all of gaming. The evasion rate on the enemies, your own lengthy evasion animations, knockback, knock-down, status effects like sleep and confusion that don't increase challenge, the charging mechanic for the weapons--it's all designed to take far longer than it needs to (and it's not just Secret of Mana--I've put 200+ hours into Diablo III, and I find status effects like Fear to be intolerable; it doesn't increase challenge, it just wastes time). I was obviously able to get used to the mechanics (I've beaten it multiplayer with my brothers and solo), but every time I go back to it after a prolonged absence, I have to get used to it all over again. I can't help but wonder what might have been had Nintendo not cancelled the CD-ROM add on, which forced Square to cut back the game significantly.
    I didn't care for FFVII, even back then--I've always thought the graphics looked terrible (except for some of the prerendered backgrounds) and the gameplay felt like a step back from Final Fantasy VI.

    Secret of Mana is one of my all time favorite games, but to each their own. I would just grind until the battles were easy. I sometimes played with my siblings, but usually I played solo. When 7 came out, it didn't feel like Final Fantasy to me. Final Fantasy to me had more of a classic sword and sorcery feel to it, with airships. I also missed the symphonic music. My younger brother played FF7 and 8, but I skipped from FF6 to FF9. To date, 4, 6, 9, and 10 are my favorites in the series. X looked so amazing to me that I bought a PS2 just to play it. I never thought polygonal character design looked good, so that ruled out games like FF7, Tomb Raider, etc.
    I liked Dark Cloud when it came out, but I remember it being too grindy. I liked building up my towns in it, though. Kind of had that mobile game energy before mobile games existed.

    Final Fantasy 5 isnt as bad as you say, provided you find the right guys to battle in order to level up your classes quickly. I agree it can be a bit of a chore, but personally i think youre judging it a little too harshly. Half the fun is leveling up and figuring out your favorite combo of abilities and what those abilities do. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and everyone has different tastes in games, that being said, anyone that is a Final Fantasy fan or just a turn based RPG fan owes it to themselves to give it a try a least cuz it is a fantastic game and showed where a class system can take you.

      @Fortefyre everyone has different tastes so i shouldnt say youre judging it too harshly cuz your opinion is based on your experiences. Im just kind of shocked and surprised too see Secret of Mana, and the Final Fantasy titles on your list of "worst jrpgs". I honestly dont think ive ever seen anyone place those games on a "worst" list ever. Try playing Secret of the Stars for the Snes, it might actually replace one of those games. I still wouldnt consider it a worst jrpg ive played, but it is so mediocre and so many youtubers do consider it one of the worst on the Snes and possibly between all other platforms as well. That part never bothered me, eventually you get the rhythm of it--Phantasy Star Online/Portable have a similar mechanic but improves it by using the timing as part of a combo/critical hit system. Just wait until you charge a level 8 sword attack for nearly a minute only for it to miss due to evasion or bad hit detection. There's a reason I play the imp and girl on bosses and leave Randi to the AI to charge his attack even when I'm not cheesing the magic exploit.

That's the best RPG on the N64, bar-none. Try a hard mode ROM hack, legit some of the most fun I've ever had. You're wrong about the camera orientation. The game does remember where you were facing, and puts you in the right direction after battles. The bestiary is unique and varied, there's even uncommon enemies that you can miss. The entire game pops with color, and the soundtrack is top-notch. Sometimes, less is more, I just love the simplicity of it, no currency or heavy dialog required. Man, a few of these really burned. Dragon Quest, Secret of Mana and FF7 are among my absolute favorite games I've ever played! Secret of Mana and Dragon Quest got me into the series of games at large and FF7 was a nice capstone on my enjoyment there, it is perfect and nothing else even comes close. FF9 comes close. I think the fundamental difference between our points of view, however, is that I owned and played these games when they were new and revolutionary and all the other words that mean "good" while you are playing them from a "this is absolute poop and wouldn't fly today" and both are fair. I didn't play Dark Cloud because I *did* play Actraiser and D&D. Dark Cloud was taking the worst parts of these. I smelled it miles away and I feel fine that I avoided it. The hack series was as you said, "amazing concept, dogshit execution" and the fact you needed the Manga, the show, and all the games to get the whole story screams cashgrab. All the job-based FF games (2,3,5 etc) are all just different exercises in grinding levened with a somewhat interesting story that generally doesn't progress until the end of the game. Quest64 is another idea that sounds fun, but there's SO MANY WAYS to completely end a run. I couldn't get through it without cheating and using a guide.
    My hot take jrpg is Earthbound. It has a great story and a neat concept. The endgame feels obviously taped to the rest of the game as a last minute thought. Also, the enemies are frequently damage sponges making even random encounters dangerous quickly unless you're over leveled to the point things just flee or the fights become trivial. And forget the bosses, because they're just random encounter +infinity.
    But that's me. I still enjoy your videos and honestly, even with the points I disagree on, you make good points.

      So, I'm glad you mentioned the whole "this is poop and wouldn't fly today", when I play games, I embrace a cognitive approach to it, around how the standards were at the time, there's games I adore from the early 80s that many people my age, or hell, even younger, would feel "aged poorly" which is a big reason why I absolutely dislike that term. I associated my opinion on FF7 from key mechanics that didn't make it stand out among the other games I had played.
      I'm glad you enjoyed the video Bill!

    I appreciate that you have exposed the flaws hidden in the charm and reputation of JRPGs, provoking a discussion among viewers and reaffirming the importance of individual memories.
    I agree with you when it comes to the overrated past FF and DQ.
    I would add that the system was immature and not up to modern standards, and I was not comfortable with the group mentality that had become a kind of social phenomenon in Japan.
    Actually, even as a JRPG lover, I don't really prefer games that focus on non-playable protagonists like NPCs or summon mascots, such as the latest Pokemon/Palworld games. I also find the excessive beautification in franchises like Zelda, Tales, and Persona, as well as in recently released HD remakes to be off-putting.
    Especially when the Tales series and Valkyrie Profile with their chanting of technique names became popular, it was as embarrassing and cringe-worthy as the weebs shouting NARUTO's RASENGAN today, haha!
    (Chanting here refers to the kind of spells that people like to memorize, such as the chanting of summoning servant in FATE or the magic chanting in Slayers lol)
    However, I understand that taste is subjective, and I think your list is fair and realistic.

    .hack is really good when you know what you're doing, but it's pretty lousy for newcomers. The problem is the combat shines with temporary buff items like speed charms and blood items that you can buy at the stores. Speed charms increase the character's base speed by 3 to 4 times, and the blood items boost both physical and magic attack, defense, and accuracy by a significant amount. You'll definitely see "Miss" way less often if you use them and you can decimate enemies in seconds using them with the right weapons skills as well. The games never tell you that these exist though, and it's pretty obvious you didn't use them, from what I'm seeing in your video, as a result of that.
    Nowadays I use them and the combat with them is literally 10 times faster than the base speed is. I am literally clearing entire dungeons out in less than 10 minutes instead of 30 minutes because of these items alone. Not to mention you can switch weapons and armor during fights so you can switch out skills that exploit enemy elemental weaknesses, you can do the same for you party members as well. This combat system is great for people who like to micromanage battles and I still had a blast playing through them again recently.
    I doubt you'll return to them, but if you do try out the speed charms (Magic shop) and blood items (Item shop). It's night and day how much better they make the combat flow and you can reapply them to the entire party in just a couple seconds when they run out, which they usually do about halfway through most dungeons for me.
    G.U.'s combat flows a bit better and the remaster makes it less of a slog to get through on top of that if you want to check it out instead. It frequently goes on sale for $5 on Steam and PSN, $10 on the eshop.

      @@Fortefyre It's definitely one of those series that gets better the more you understand the gameplay mechanics. Heck I'm still learning new things about it's combat and I just did probably my 20th playthrough of the games.
      It also doesn't help that this a multimedia franchise and there's a prequel anime to these games called SIGN that pretty much sets up the story for them as well. The villain is really well defined in the anime, but in the games she's more of a force of nature and vaguely explained.
      The developer, CyberConnect2, really wants to remake these games, but the publisher, Bandai Namco, unfortunately cares more about SAO and has pretty much forsaken this series in favor for that one.
      Thankfully CC2 is back to making original games after only making anime games for the past decade, and I found their recent Fuga games to have a pretty fun gameplay loop, if you like Grandia/Advanced Wars you might like it's turn based combat.
      I'm hoping they return to .hack some day even if it's with a spiritual successor because this series was so good back in the day.

    Alright, I'm back.
    .Hack- I basically hate any game that relies on AI party members. .Hack is an egregious offender, and it's even worse for.. pretty much every reason you listed. Hell, Id put it higher on the list.
    Secret of mana.. see above. AI party members, plus full screen freezes when you cast magic allowing you to chain down bosses, and they can do the same to you. And will. Stupid tiger boss..
    Final Fantasy 7- You're a monster, but I also didnt have that problem with the backgrounds. If you press Select that problem goes away, because you can see where the exits are. But people find different things difficult. I am streaming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on my channel =D (plugged) I kind of agree with you about Cloud to some point.
    Dragon Quest 1- Yeah.. Yeah that's fair, but I also assume its because you didnt play Dragon Quest 2, which was far worse because they made the entire game too EASY, until the final dungeon where suddenly theres like a 15 level differential and you have to grind for like two hours. Dragon Warrior Randomizers are fun though. Its no longer save the princess, get the flute, fight the dragon lord.. in that order.
    I actually never played Dark Cloud, but I know it's beloved.
    Final Fantasy 2 is the center space on a bingo card of bad JRPGs and red headed step children, along with Zelda 2.
    Final Fantasy 5.. I never really had to do much grinding, and ive played it a bunch. But I also play a very specific way and if there IS a class that seems like more trouble than it's worth, like Ranger, I general skip it.
    Quest 64: I never played it, specifically because it looks like ASS.
    Beyond the Beyond.. Ive never even HEARD of that holy shit.
    Digimon World- Every digimon game is a grindy dickfest. Good call. I fucking hate games where the mechanic is "You have to make your units into level 1 units so they can get stronger. Disagea is another one that comes to mind that makes me want to set myself on fire.
    Overall.. UNDERSTANDABLE list, but I disagree with a couple, but I cant argue with your points on them because you had problems with them that I didnt. And thats ok. I never beat Top Gun.

    • @Fortefyre
      @Fortefyre  4 месяца назад

      I don't believe so lol. Weapon Degredation is a padding mechanic, which I can suffer in games, but every single hit damaging a weapon? The thirst mechanic? The N^2 leveling mechanic for newer characters? I made it to the alien area, or that strange level 3 dungeon, and my characters were useless because I needed to go back to the first town to grind up. The building aspect, wasn't so bad, but the economy of the game is dreadful. What are your takes?

    • @tripple-a6031
      @tripple-a6031 4 месяца назад

      @@Fortefyre While not a great mechanic, the weapon degradation becomes a non-issue after just half of the first dungeon. Same with thirst.
      Even if you're not lucky in finding a good weapon for new characters you can buy decent ones or even get some really good ones if you 100% the areas. You NEVER have to go back to grind, not that it would even work with how little xp early game enemies give.
      You can always damage an enemy with another character first if needed or to upgrade weaker weapons (to get them to +5) switch the weapon right after dealing the killing blow.
      The town building is neat, though not as good as in Dark Chronicle as you're rather limited in how you can arrange the stuff.
      All the excess money will have its use in the final area where you can buy gems for 3k each.
