This song is exactly what the word synecdoche is about. You let people see a relatively small fraction of yourself - consisting of the parts you find most palatable - and you let them take that for the whole. Because "no one will ever love you for everything you are".
"I will be dying and so will you, and so will everyone here. That's what I want to explore. We're all hurtling towards death, yet here we are for the moment, alive. Each of us knowing we're going to die, each of us secretly believing we won't". - Caden
"No one will ever love you for everything you are." That's such a terrifying concept. It's an incredibly beautiful song - Jon Brion is an exceptionally talented composer.
"No one will ever love you for everything you are And so you build up layers of deception And you leave out things to alter the perceptions Of the ones you love, who would never love you back If they knew all about you, every solitary fact" gets me everytime
This song should be depressing, but it's actually very comforting to know that somebody else in the world that feels just like me. It makes me feel less lonely.
True. I feel the same.....no one could ever see me. I cant just open up to people because everytime they judged me. Everyone did.......and no man.....ever knew me. Ever found me. Ever loved me for everything....i am
The idea behind this song is painful to the point of thinking about it and crying uncontrollably in public, but hearing about it from someone else is so comforting.
this song is just unbelievable. How there could be songs out there like this and not be classics known by everyone makes me sick. Jon brion is WAY underrated.
Jesus fucking Christ, Jon, you didn't have to go that hard lmao. I just started laughing the first time I listened to this song because it exposes every single one of us.
sometimes I don’t understand how certain people could lie to me if they loved me. But then I remember this song, and it reminds me that they’re doing it because, well, they’re afraid. I’m sorry to anyone who’s afraid to be themselves.
A song that always makes me cry. Coming from someone who isnt usually moved by music or film in this way... but this song is so fucking real. I can't take my mind off the idea, it's just reality spoken to truthfully in front of me. Also yeah, YMS thank you so much for introducing me to this movie.
I'm singing this song, but it's about you Whoever else is listening, it's only about you See there's just one story, and everyone's the star And it goes like this... No one will ever love you for everything you are And so you build up layers of deception And you leave out things to alter the perceptions Of the ones you love, who would never love you back If they knew all about you, every solitary fact And the sadness of your life is built upon this lack Of really knowing anyone or having them know you It's the sadness of the world, there's nothing left to do And so just go to sleep, just let the hours pass Sleep it all away, none of it will last Soon it's all over, you're under clover And none of it matters anymore
im a very sad, lonely person. but i will forever refuse to believe that true love isnt real. until the moment i die i believe in the power of love. i almost think this movie is trying to show me how to NOT think. how to NOT view the world.
i agree...this movie inspired and affected me more than maybe any other film i have ever seen. and this song....haunting and so amazingly moving. you need to watch this movie several times to really get it. i plan to revisit it as time goes on. thank you Charlie.
You don't love anybody for anything they are. You love them because you love them, no matter how they are. That's what is so beautiful about love, that it has no rules and of course it is an illusion, what else ? But that doesn't make it any less real because after all you feel it. It is something we all want to explain and understand but at the end of the day we must admit tat we can't and will never do. We should just be thankful that it exists and gives us a reason to live.
+Nico Sax (Starfish) I really don't want to be that guy, but love's just chemicals in our brain, we're hardwired to feel it and to seek partners, its very much explainable. I know its conforting to think we just can't explain it and its magic and the reason to live. But really, is just another part of life. This of course being the internet, therefore, my opinion is useless. (Sorry for my english, i'm brazilian)
mate, love is chemicals, but so is literally everything you think and feel. It doesn't just occur spontaneously, who you love reflects your deepest sense of self. It's a reflection of your philosophy, who you love.
Nico Sax Sorry, but that's bullshit. There is no such thing as unconditional love, which is what you're describing. There are reasons and conditions for every relationship otherwise it would cease to exist. That's the truth of this song. People have false expectations of each other and so they live that lie to maintain the illusion. It's the only way that people can get along with each other.
sd02231 but somewhere maybe someday, maybe somewhere far away, you'll meet a second little person who will look at you and say, I know you, you're the one I've been searching for
i love how the movies about how everyone has their own story yet the entire universe seems to exist just for the experience of caden in how the singers lyrics seeem directed right at him lol
That part where Claire and Caden first sit down gets to me for some reason. It's like one of those things that should be insignificant but for some reason resonates with you. I guess it's because the music and the film flowed in such a way that reminded me of imagery that I've had when thinking about sadness/death/grieving. I don't know, it's weird, but that part where Claire looks back at Hazel really gets to me for some reason.
That's exactly what I thought about "the eternal search for happiness" I think it's called, with Will Smith. I hated that movie but in stark contrast, loved this one. This is one of my favorite movies ever made, definitely one of the best of the decade
Yes, the song from the night club scene and the preview is the same song. It's called Little Person. It should be the first video under related videos and it's also been posted as the video response.
very true noone knows anything completely... just like how we'll never know for sure about this world and how it actually operates... we can only guess. some claim they know "the secret"... but who can even guarantee that it's true?
Self-indulgence, too, is a rather abstract concept. Who isn't consumed with self? But it's a good point. People shouldn't know us completely. Mystery trumps transparency.
Loved this song....why does it sound so different than what I remember? Was there another song? I remember something different in the night club scene, and also the previews...oh well....
hey thanks man I appreciate the effort but i already had that arrangement of it, its just not a very well written arrangement and I'm looking for one to sing with so i can perform it. However I appreciate your effort to send me the sheet music as very few people would even try so thank you.
I don't think that critics HATED this movie, I mean hell Roger Ebert called it the best film of the decade, but seeing this gem not getting the credit it deserves is a shame. To answer your question though, I think it's because it's a movie that's not afraid to be not only a movie that's different, but also a movie that is brutally honest about it's central messages and themes and not sugar coat them to any extent. Add to the fact that it's a film that relies on your own interpretation of the events and you get a movie that the general audience/critics will find either a piece of cinematic art or a film that was just a botched attempt at trying to be intellectual, at least in my opinion.
@rmfloden No, not the eternal sunshine of a spotless mind. I'm talking about the will smith move pursuit of happiness or search for happiness, I forget
“No one will ever love you for everything you are” just… isn’t really true in some cases. Although this is often true sure, some people love even the imperfections in their partners. Even if they themselves disagree with them, the differences are endearing in the eyes of some people. Opposites attract, unconditional love, yadda yadda. It seems like nihilism can be a little dishonest.
really? I found it incredibly sad. The saddest song Ive ever heard probably.. well, yes, the song is very true... and says theres nothing left to do about this sad fact. I guess thats probably where you find it kinda gloomy-funny?

Thank you YMS aka Adam
Thank you Charlie Kaufman
Thank you Philip Seymour Hoffman
+ponyboy staygold RIP Phillip Seymour Hoffman
@Themonkeymartin Yes!
"No one will ever love you for everything you are." That's such a terrifying concept.
It's an incredibly beautiful song - Jon Brion is an exceptionally talented composer.
actually Charlie Kaufman wrote the lyrics of this song himself. that doesn't change the fact that Jon Brion is a very talented composer.
"No one will ever love you for everything you are
And so you build up layers of deception
And you leave out things to alter the perceptions
Of the ones you love, who would never love you back
If they knew all about you, every solitary fact"
gets me everytime

Themonkeymartin for everything you are

Love the line "And the sadness of your life, is built upon this lack". Adele Lack being the name of Cadens's wife who abandons him in the film.
Great catch
Jesus fucking Christ, Jon, you didn't have to go that hard lmao. I just started laughing the first time I listened to this song because it exposes every single one of us.
I love this song and little person so much. The musics so very beautiful, wonderfully contradicting the devastating nature of the lyrics. So well done
EstimatedProphet92 same! I wonder if there is anything like these songs out there (the other songs of Brion are not even close)
The flawless work of Jon Brion fer ya. I also adore his music for the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
sometimes I don’t understand how certain people could lie to me if they loved me. But then I remember this song, and it reminds me that they’re doing it because, well, they’re afraid.

I'm singing this song,
but it's about you
Whoever else is listening,
it's only about you
See there's just one story,
and everyone's the star
And it goes like this...
No one will ever love you
for everything you are
And so you build up layers of deception
And you leave out things to alter the perceptions
Of the ones you love,
who would never love you back
If they knew all about you,
every solitary fact
And the sadness of your life
is built upon this lack
Of really knowing anyone
or having them know you
It's the sadness of the world,
there's nothing left to do
And so just go to sleep,
just let the hours pass
Sleep it all away,
none of it will last
Soon it's all over,
you're under clover
And none of it matters anymore
man the truth is just depressing sometimes.

entirely agree. this movie went beyond almost any other movie in describing what it describes. it hunts me.
i agree...this movie inspired and affected me more than maybe any other film i have ever seen. and this song....haunting and so amazingly moving. you need to watch this movie several times to really get it. i plan to revisit it as time goes on. thank you Charlie.
Charlie Kaufman wrote the lyrics, just so everyone knows.
well, of course.
It's very relaxing, nice to listen to after a long day.

Chandler Tucker What you said is a line I won't be falling for, now or ever. I'm the only "little person" I need to care about.
No one will ever love you for everything that you are
Thanks for making a depressing song for anybody who's name is caden. My friend was dying lol
I think there's a great deal of very obvious honesty in this film. The thing is what it is...
Perfect, thank you Synecdoche, New York and Jon Brion :)
i love how the movies about how everyone has their own story yet the entire universe seems to exist just for the experience of caden in how the singers lyrics seeem directed right at him lol
This song is about you
and you
This movie is about you
Thank you so much for this post!
its the most true thing i've ever heard

i just love this song so much.
Thanks for the song
Well at least this woman understands me
love is surreal, so does life itself
this song is the exact opposite of "the mortifying ordeal of being known". the tragic reality of never truly being known.
That's exactly what I thought about "the eternal search for happiness" I think it's called, with Will Smith. I hated that movie but in stark contrast, loved this one. This is one of my favorite movies ever made, definitely one of the best of the decade

This is my happy birthday to me movie
no one ever really knows the heart of anyone else.

Guys, she said the song is just for Caden. Whoever else is listening, it's only about him.
Guess we can all pack up and go home, case closed
@x5dgr yea homie u good
For everything you are...
If you liked this film I recommend the film "Brazil" very much.
“Goodness, that’s... harsh, isn’t it?”
“Well, perhaps. But truthful.”
"And where will it take you?"
"Home."
this song makes me want to cry and burn my heart
Thanks Lucy
Thanks for this, but I wish you would put the lyrics in the video description.
+Yrjan Willy Lund (rzr) same
Loved this song....why does it sound so different than what I remember? Was there another song? I remember something different in the night club scene, and also the previews...oh well....
the other song is called little person
Looking at all the different year old comments on this video from 2008
@sclogse1 You're thinking of the song Little Person, I believe
1:55 1:58 2:00 2:01
Seymour!
Any one know where to find sheet music for this song as well as little person
I have it, how do i give to you? I have a jpg on my comp
hey thanks man I appreciate the effort but i already had that arrangement of it, its just not a very well written arrangement and I'm looking for one to sing with so i can perform it. However I appreciate your effort to send me the sheet music as very few people would even try so thank you.
TSH Yeah, oh well, I asked other performers of the song but they said they just did the song by ear. Try emailing Jon Brion?
I've been looking for a way to do it on the guitar, so I'd need the raw chords of it or something. Could you send me any info you might have?

This is true to me ... No one ever did....
why are critics hated this movie so much?
Because it's overly complicated
