Brake fluid is hygroscopic as you say, so usual recommendation is replace every 2-3 years (time based not mileage). I just changed it on my used 155k/5 years old prius and it was very dark yellow with some small particles, instead of clear. $6 in part, and 20 min job if I had to do it again. easy peazy (once you figure out how to get Prius into 'invalid mode' and let it pump rear fluid for ya). @@Hujak100 they usually scare you by saying old dental work is failing or done wrong by the last guy. Especially true if you had crowns and expensive work.
Guess I lucked out on my dentist. Hadn't been to one in 15 years, went 2 weeks ago, I have 4 small cavities that he said to just floss better and watch them, probably will have to be filled in 6 months or so but nothing was pushed on me.
I am transmission builder & Master tech and I have been thinking of doing one of these videos on Transmission scams let me know if its something people would like?
THIS is why I learned to fix my cars myself. Finding a good/honest mechanic is like finding a needle in a haystack. Now I know a guy that is good and honest, except I only use him for stuff I can't fix easily.
Same here. I was taking my car to this mechanic in town and I seriously started getting this feeling he was sabotaging my car because it was like clockwork, as soon as he fixed something- something else went wrong. Head gasket then ignition switch then valves needed reseated then brake master cylinder one thing after another. Finally I took my car to the other mechanic in town and ever since then I've been having virtually no major issues with my car since. Now this other guy will do exactly what needs to be done and even fixes up little things here and there for free. Door was catching so he replaced the pins, store was out of regular brake pads so bought me the premium set at no extra charge. Ignition locked up in my pickup and he knew I needed it for work so he had it fixed for me overnight.
Frankenscuzz I've got a great Mechanic who when I can't do the work myself! He's an old timer from Hungary who used to work for Volvo years ago! He charges $25.00 an hour, labor, buys most parts off EBay, makes nothing on parts, and would never do anything to the car it doesn't need! He's my "Scotty"! As trustworthy as they come, a great guy! As they say... " one hand washes the other"! I recommend him to all of my friends, family, and , my Company, which has a fleet of cars! His business has grown 10 times more since I met him! He now has 2 Tech's working for him, pays them very well , and still charges just $25.00 per hour plus parts! Boy did I luck out!
True...keep your own log book of kilometres and date of procedure/parts used based on the service book intervals but doing the intervals more frequently than the book suggests. The service soon light is irrelevant after that. If you want to do the light thing reset the light interval for the distance you choose in the future for oil change.
Good on you, Scotty. Especially my female friends telling me how they been taken and/or never feel like they can trust a shop not to take advantage of them. Even though the vast majority of all people don’t know much at all about car maintenance and repairs, the dishonest mechanics often do seem them as easier marks. Helping people like you’re doing here is really laudable.
Well said. Used car dealers and mechanics start drooling when someone who isn't vehicle savvy come through the door. My buddy bought a car at a used car dealer on the other side of town last month, and I wish he brought me with him. It's obvious they cleared the codes before he test drove it, because a few days later, the engine light came on and I'm getting all sorts of codes on my scanner. Also, the car was practically bone dry with no oil and the rear brakes are worn to nothing. It's also got a coolant leak, and the ac needs a recharge. This is why I hate used car dealers. Even though he bought it as is, we have certain lemon laws in CT, that even with an as is sale, prohibits shops from willfully hiding problems on a car, and must pass a multi point safety inspection. I'm going to help him get his money back and leave this piece of junk in their driveway.
@@Mikey-1990 Beware of used car dealers taking the check engine light bulb out of the dash cluster, scan the car you are thinking of buying even if there is no check engine light
Man, I wish I knew a honest mechanic like yourself.. I haven't met anyone who considers themselves a "mechanic" who was legit and honest. You're a good man, we need more people like you out there. Love your videos Scotty 👍👍
thankfully i have a good mechanic that's done work on my previous vehicles. he's honest doesn't do any work without asking/telling you about it doesn't try to tell me about/sell me on other repairs that "need" to be done and he's just an all-round good guy
Also, it's pretty shocking how some people give these dodgy mechs a helping hand by simply not familiarising themselves with their vehicles AT ALL. I know of one guy who was a sales rep, so obviously v high mileage... He called the garage up on his mobile whilst he was driving - the reason for his concern... The oil light had come on when he went round a corner a bit sharply.
That's why I never bothered going to school for it, i might go for motorcycle mechanic in a few years tho just for the knowledge tho not a career... unless I run my own shop

Great advice, Scotty. As a 78yr old, I grew up doing a lot of my own servicing and repairs on my cars, even though I wasn't a trained mechanic, but cars were a lot simpler back then and manuals were available for DIY people like me. Now, I drive a Peugeot only 4 months old with more bells and whistles than you can poke a stick at, but it's a great car and I can but keep your invaluable advice in mind for whenever the service light comes on. Oh, by the way, I'm Australian and that's why I'm driving a Peugeot, my 7th, and they've all been reliable great cars. Cheers!
@grahamrankin5557, Columbo drove a Peugeot!!! His looked like one from the mid-1960's... And yes, it did have some issues, but I'll be damned if that thing didn't take him all over Southern Calif. all during that series!!! The older cars & trucks are highly sought after because of their Known inherent reliability... The really nice ones that are simple and drive well are going for amazingly high prices these days... Something that probably WON'T happen with most of the newer vehicles, because of their extremely complex systems, and lack of interchangable designs & equipment.... If you want reliability, go with something simple, and go with something that is popular, as the parts will be easier to find in the aftermarket. This will give your bank account a well deserved relief from pouring $ into your vehicle.
I love watching Scotty. My dad was an honest mechanic. My son is an honest mechanic. I gave up the trade years ago, but still like to watch it done. Scotty is more animated than any of us, but I enjoy his videos.

Apparently good honest ones are indeed "few and far in between like brother Peter Suarez posted above. I'm just as straight up as Scotty 'cause I try to put myself in other's shoes. Sure I feel nervous if I had to take my car someplace, but since I'm still able to do my own stuff and I help others, let them buy their own parts if they choose to, all that stuff. It's the places we often work at that are to blame sometimes, not us. I work for ME now and don't have a problem explaining what need to be done and why. I put myself in the customer's place. That just about covers it my friend.
Scotty is a youtube star so even he is going to charge you a premium compared to a more humble independent mechanic. "Honest mechanics" being very hard to find. Besides Scotty is probably so busy that he is booked solid for the rest of 2019.
It's easy to persuade people who already bring it to the dealer they have money because they know mom and pop shops are cheaper and think the quality of work is better

Yeah man I dont know how people make it without a mechanic friend. My buddy jonny, has saved me thousands and I am forever grateful. Always there to help him around his house though!
My dodge dealership wanted $350 to replace my master relay switch for my driver side door control. I bought the part for $25 bucks and took 5 mins to replace it. Can’t stand when f@ckers try and scam me or anyone else.
My uncle bought a brand new opel movano van here in Ireland and they tried to charge him 800 for an oil change and they said the hours all added up my dad and me work mechanics we did the same job in 25 mins
Well at least it was something you actually needed. My dealer tried to charge me $1500 for something that was absolutely not broken and not at all needed.
Honda dealers broke me of the dealer service habit a long time ago. Every time I brought the car in it would be a months rent, regardless of how little needed to be done.
Reason I only work on my own truck and get it inspected at our small town local shop. It's ridiculous the scams these dealer crooks can pull! There was a shop in town that recently got in huge trouble after atleast 10 customers exposed them for purposely damaging their customers air filters to get more money out of them! Absurd!
I was told I needed $800 dollars worth of work on my 2004 Dodge Hemi truck but I have gotten in the habit of checking all fuses first when something goes wrong with my truck. Turns out it was only the fuel pump fuse which I replaced myself for about $2
I was not taught growing up, how to fix a car. So doing it myself has been a task. I just wanna make sure it’s safe for my son and I! Scotty, I wanna say thanks for your honest and epic knowledge on cars. I wish you were my mechanic besides these awesome videos. Thanks again and keep up the good work! We need more people like you sir. Thanks!

Just Google local mechanics shops in your area, and only take your car to the shops that have 4.5 Stars are more. Thankfully in todays day & age it's alot easier to find an honest mechanic with the use of Google/Yelp Reviews.
It is so hard to find a shop that doesn't recommend a bunch of junk. IME, look for small shops where the owner is the mechanic, advisor etc...... I usually find these guys are the most honest and skilled mechanics out there.
I am a service advisor at a Toyota dealer, and I will say I agree with you, if you are honest and upfront with your customers, they will come back. I believe in Toyota's products, I pop the hood with the customer, show them around the engine, let them know exactly what we will look at, and even point things if i see them, for instance, had a 2001 prius roll in, and the brake fluid was *black*, like no lie, BLACK, I did not feel bad at all advising the customer that she needed to change her brake fluid, been coming to us since 2004, and never once had it changed. I have seen a lot of advisors/techs come and go who were dishonest, wanted to make a quick buck, and drive good customers away. Honesty is always the best practice. And at the end of the day, I feel good knowing I actually helped someone keep a big part of their lives keep on going on Toyota strong!
But, the dealer service center is usually a profit center also. How does the General Manager / Owner feel about your methods of honesty (in other words, are you fully supported by them.... or do they constantly push you for more revenue)?
@@TheVikingamerican they always want revenue, but to do the right thing means better things for everyone involved, the staff, the dealer, and the customer.
there are more than a few smart people usually wise to cons who just arent interested in the grease, grime, and tool investment of servicing their cars- all you have to do is let them know service advisers are paid commission and a LOT of the opportunity for dishonesty wont even walk in the door
@@EduardoRodriguez-fh6hv He's said in downtown Houston and the garage and house in his video are typical of that part of town. Of course, that area is becoming gentrified awfully fast. He's also said that he lived in Toronto before moving to Houston but that must've been a long time ago cause his Texas accent is strong and there's no hint of a Canadian accent, then it's been my experience that Canadian ex-pats to Houston tend to pick up some Texas accents quite quickly.
I really don’t know anything about cars, but I been trying to learn everything I can about it. I have a Nissan Altima 2007 4-2488 2.5L DOHC (or so this paper said), with 185,000 miles, and it has been giving me some trouble lately, I’m no rich guy to be at the Mecanic fixing everything that needs to be done. This videos have helped me a lot, and I never write anything on the comments section, because I feel I’m never notice, but today I just feel really grateful and I wanted to say that I appreciate all the knowledge you share with us, and that I will do everything I can to learn how to fix my car and then my next car, and the next one, and the next one, etc. So thank you very much for the inspiration Mr. Scotty Kilmer.
I work in car parts. I always try to find customers the most economical solutions because I would rather have your trust and your future business than one big sale.
The Toyota dealer charged me $50 for automatic transmission fluid when I had a manual five speed transmission. No matter how pissed off I was at them they stood up to me. Never went back there again.

I'm a lube tech and amature mechanic and I dont make commission I've literally built a customer base on being honest with ppl and probably made my company more money with loyalty than ripping off the occasional customer, respect
Amen brother. I was a lube tech and eventually manager if a quickie lube. My store out performed all of my bosses stores because my team and I would not rip people off. We would advise, not sell.
@Tone Martin What's so funny? Not every issue requires pulling the engine, in fact very few do. Maintenance is where one can rip customers off, but he doesn't.
Scotty saved me from liars who said my transmission was bad and my radiator was bad. All it was was a faulty plug wire and Scotty figured it out. I spent $29 on wires instead of$ 4000 on a transmission and $300 on a radiator.
Love this guy. The shop I work at definitely stays away from all of this. It's crazy that some mechanics charge full price for overlapping labor. Why would you charge a customer brake labor for installing rotors if you're replacing the wheel bearing as well? Throw a little bit of labor on for the pads and replacing the hardware and call it good. 🤷♂️ Greedy people irritate me
My stepdad know a mechanic who helped repaired our family's cars over the years. He owns a outdoor shop not far from our house by the interstate. I heard some bad mechanics who fix poorly or procrastinate for months yet he is the only mechanic I rely whenever there's a issue. Hope he doing okay since he is elderly.
Bring your car in for state inspection and see what they try to hit you with. If nothing, give em a shot with something else... really hard to say though unless you know about your car and look before and after bringing it in... at that point, might as well do repair yourself if yoh have the time
I was talking to a guy who took his work van to a "reputable" garage for a tune up and they charged him for 8 spark plug wires and 8 spark plugs... He told them "l am not the smartest person in the world but I can count!"His van had a V6!😅
I had a guy i trusted. Was just him and his son, 5 blocks from my house. I could drop my car off in the morning with a blank check say what i wanted done and to do whatever else needed to be done and just call me if it was over a certain $ amount. I miss that place. Am 1200 miles away now and still looking for a place like that again.
Where can you find an honest local mechanic like Scotty… I live in California, and every one thinks they gotta charge you 500 for labor on a ONE HOUR JOB
A local dealer tried nonsense on my new ranger in 2003. 4500 for work on brakes, shocks, leaking rear main seal, etc. I said I'm getting a second opinion. Went to our family mechanic (truck was 400 miles out of warranty) My mechanic looked at it and in five minutes told me to take it home because there's nothing wrong with it. I wrote a letter to the manufacturer with a complaint. The dealership had the nerve to tell me that my mechanic isn't a certified mechanic for that manufacturer. I told him that at least my mechanic can tell the difference between a leak in the rear main seal and left over oil drip from the oil change. Beware the dealerships. I'll stick with my mechanic.
Lol now that you mentioned certified mechanics...dealerships dont even have licensed mechanics.. here in Houston Texas nissan dealerships and ford dealerships dont even check if your certified when you apply
Justin Trebell I remember the great auto shop teachers we had. I learned a, lot which I still retain over 45 years later. Almost all of us own cars, and the real world experience of auto shop helped many people gain the confidence to work on their own cars.
My teacher is great, if you are a kid who wants to work he'll put you to work doing stuff around the shop and even recommend you for jobs at dealerships around the area
theaberrantdon look man I’ll be straight with you. As a mechanic I can the you most of the time it doesn’t pay to be honest. Is it the right thing to do? Yes it is and I can sleep at night but for the most part being honest isn’t the best way to make money although obviously that’s not always 100% the case
I hated working at dealerships, especially after seeing what the service advisor would sell unsuspecting people and then I'd get the car to do the nonsense work to it...I had to quit and go into bussiness for myself.
The local Mazda dealer once told me that my car needed a new valve cover gasket. It was a '93 RX-7. (For the uninitiated: that has a rotary engine, which does not have valves. Much less a valve cover, or a valve cover gasket.) (I'll take my keys now, thank you very much.)
All my life I never used a shop because of the prices and because I didn't trust them. But, after I bought my '01 Camry I decided to give this one place that was recommended a shot. I wanted to have a good tune-up done. They treated me right and gave me a good price on the work. My car runs like a top now. I will definitely be going back to them for all my future work.
David Nieves Jr. you lucked out! Some dealers are honest! It depends on who's in charge and what kind of a person they are! There's a Chrysler Dealer where I live, who is honest as the day is long! Mind you, I don't have a Chrysler Product ((thank God))), but the guy who owns the dealership is a good Soul who takes good care of his customers! He also feeds and cares for a feral Cat colony behind his dealership.. Around 20 cats! All have shelters for winter, food all day to eat, he's a great guy!
Wish Scotty lived in my neighborhood, every time I return from the mechanic I feel like I have to double check every thing myself...thank god for youtube.

Frankenscuzz the tables have turned.

What we gonna do without you Scotty. You are a rare breed of mechanics nowadays, we are totally screwed.

Dealerships are scandalous like that. I never go to the dealer for a fix.

theaberrantdon look man I’ll be straight with you. As a mechanic I can the you most of the time it doesn’t pay to be honest. Is it the right thing to do? Yes it is and I can sleep at night but for the most part being honest isn’t the best way to make money although obviously that’s not always 100% the case
That God sure made a LOT of crooks, too.
Love Scotty’s videos, my favorite videos I listen to on RUclips.
I hated working at dealerships, especially after seeing what the service advisor would sell unsuspecting people and then I'd get the car to do the nonsense work to it...I had to quit and go into bussiness for myself.
zew 1 I'm so glad you got out of that, people like that are not worth working for.
Honesty isn't common these days. Thankfully you got out on your own and started working honestly. Stealerships are the worst.
Are saying service advisors are up selling and the mechanics?
Are you from NJ?
Brian Getty service advisors are meant to up sell to their customers. Service advisors are meant to up sell what their mechanic(s) recommend.
Scotty, you have done more for humanity than most. Thank you for so generously sharing your knowledge and experience.
Thank you! Scotty K. on education on auto mobil an scammer Mechanic🔧🔩🔨..😠
We love you, Scotty! You are a honest mechanic in a business full of crooks!
Whoever edited this video really gave us a variety of locations and angles😂🤟
The local Mazda dealer once told me that my car needed a new valve cover gasket.
It was a '93 RX-7. (For the uninitiated: that has a rotary engine, which does not have valves. Much less a valve cover, or a valve cover gasket.)
(I'll take my keys now, thank you very much.)
Moral of the story: get a good make of vehicle, find an HONEST mechanic.
And learn about your car so you don't get ripped off...
Or do it yourself!
@@peterescalante1207 Yeah! Even th' man said that at 1:33 of this video too.
know the clockworkings of your car as well so when they tell you cat tales you can detect them
How do you know if the mechanic is honest?
A Honda dealership tried to get me to pay $600 for a valve adjustment that took me an hour to do myself. Lame.
Nano Haus good luck with that. Misfires coming your way...
brewer Never had a problem.
@Brett Silvestri I've learned lessons and stay in my boundries of mechanical ability. I take my jeep to a mechanic when I need to.
@@Magnumscoffeefreek why are you taking a Jeep to a Honda dealership?!?
Also same guy.... not sure why my engine is skipping... i watched a video..
I like how honest scotty is and how passionate he is.
His body language gives me a jack sparrow vibe lol
Lol
Thanks Jeff, that was good.
that made me laugh hahaha
athetotic movement I think
WHY IS THE RUM GONE?
Scotty , thanks to you I'm fixing my own cars and I'm getting better .
1% of honest mechanic here Keep up the good work scotty
Wish Scotty lived in my neighborhood, every time I return from the mechanic I feel like I have to double check every thing myself...thank god for youtube.
I been doing my own work on my car
I dont know much but I'm learning and RUclips is the best

Actually, hes being down voted for telling people that have no mechanical skillsets, that they can do a headgasket themselves.
On point scotty I'm a garage mechanic and refuse to work for a company because how shady they are
Really appreciate this dude right here 💯👊 Keeps it truthful everytime.
