  • It's a special musical Tiki Technical Tuesday! Join @MrsVanTiki and I as we use our studio laser to create a registration plate and blocks for a 4-color new years card featuring my favorite project of 2020: The Water Bearer Fountain!
4 colors you say?! Sounds ambitious! Well, you're right - I definitely bit off more that I could chew with this card - and I am so glad @mrsvantiki minored in printmaking and was able to guide me through it. The registration plate worked wonderfully, but trying to squeeze two colors into each plate may have been a bit too fancy for my first attempt. :)
Thank you all for watching Tiki Technical Tuesday - filming them has helped me cope with quarantine, and I hope they've given you all a bit of an escape as well. As always - put questions in the comments and I'll do my best to answer. Happy new year!

Super engineering there. How cool that you can get multiple colors in one pass with those removable pieces. Looks like everything lined up beautifully.

Thank you! Can you tell my dad is an engineer? :D
The registration worked really well - the only issue we had was the ink. I'll be trying a water based ink next time

Beautiful. The lucky recipients will no doubt frame them. I would!
Happy New Year to the VanTikis!!

Thank you! I’m still waiting for the ink to dry 😄 - the cards will be camping out in the glaze room for another week

Now my mind is reeling with everything you could do with your laser! Textured acrylic for stamping into clay…making textured wooden rollers for clay…🤔could you laser a slab of clay???

    • @vantikistudio
      @vantikistudio  2 года назад

Yes to all the laser things!! We’ve already done some texture stamps, and There is an attachment for our laser that lets us engrave cylinders so we could do custom rollers. Not sure if we could engrave clay itself - I’d have to read up more on that before risking any laser damage 😄

I didn`t receive a card. What kind of travesty is this? :- )
Really cool idea and so well executed. Kind of an old school/new school mingle of techniques.
You guys are the best and i wish you a great 2021! Love watching your videos.

Remarkable. What an interesting tool/technique to create dead-on registration for printing. Wow.

The registration plate was my favorite part of the process. The inset plates for color highlights (the black raven and the turquoise idol) were a bit of a pain to ink, so I’m not sure if they paid off or not 😄

Thanks! This one was a bit of a struggle, as the ink was extra gooey

Wow, your registration block is a really fantastic idea. I've been planning to make a few inking plates, but was going to use the traditional single-corner registration approach that is so much tricker to do in practice. I absolutely love how you rethought the mechanics for holding the paper.
I'm also impressed that the acrylic sheet held the ink as consistently as it did. I assumed I'd need to laser into a thin piece of something like cherry so that the ink would distribute nicely.
What a fantastic video - I'm so happy you shared this!

Thanks for watching! The Registration plate is a improvement on a wood version I made to print blocks at the onset of the pandemic. It works really well - I could t be happier with it! I did sand the acrylic plates to “frost” their surface with the notion of better holding ink - it seemed to work well. We were not a big fan of the ink we used, and I’d like to experiment more with different inks.

Thank you! Those and the registration plate worked really well - but inking the itty bitty inserts was tricky (especially with the goopy ink we ended up using)
