About 40 years ago(I'm 74)-I made a chart of all the combinations I could make with 4 pairs of nice slacks, 6 shirts, and 4 cardigans in solid colors. Lately, I have
3 pairs of jeans, 5 long sleeve tees and 6 short sleeve tees. I have costume jewelry, too. We don't need lots of clothes. Tina, Al's wife

This young lady asked to not judge her so...what's up with doing that?
We all live different lives and try to make the best of the lives we have---there's no need to be negative about how other's cope.
      She is doing great---
With someone who knows about weight fluctuations, it is extremely hard to let go of items that you might need later---with the price of clothing today---it's best to hang on to some. I say, put some of the items that don't fit you and store them into a space bag. They are great for that and seasonal items you don't need at times.

I have done 2 go at my closest and know I need a 3rd one if I'm being honest with myself. You did really great! Get rid of the dresses from college. You shouldn’t hold onto things that you can’t fit into and that bring you guilt. Besides, if you eventually do fit into it one day, you might not even love it by that time. Don’t let it occupy your space. That’s expensive real estate and should be saved for something you truly love and wear.

I did think that you didn't make a huge dent in it, but then I remembered that my first couple of tries were like that too, it takes practice. Nowadays I possess about 30% of what I used to have and I still think that's too much. Just keep doing passes, but more mindfully, think about what you do end up wearing, and when you don't wear something, think about why that is, I was surprised at how many clothing items I was keeping because they were pretty and looked good on me but hardly ever wore because they were impractical/hard to combine/uncomfortable/wrong material etc.
Also, I used to thrift 90% of my clothes and it's a huge trap, I would think it was such a bargain to buy 10 items for 10 dollars (not from the US) but it was just 10 items in my closet out of which I would end up wearing maybe 3.
Now I only thrift for some items (like winter coats, I can thrift them for as little as 3 dollars!) but I buy everything else new and I think harder before I buy things (I am not well off at all, so I still do buy at cheaper stores but still...).

I am a self confessed clothes hoarder. I have every type of clothing in every colour and fabric that I like. This includes shoes, boots, jackets, cardigans and coats to match each colour too. I have gotten rid of clothes in the past during an attempted declutter. However, 11+ trash bags barely even made a dent. I know I need to be ruthless but It's incredibly difficult to let things go. I currently have a small bedroom that is my walk in wardrobe but it's crammed full and disorganised with overspill to other rooms in the house. I don't know if I could count each item like you as I'd probably shock myself stupid with the amount of things I have, but I'm going to try to see if that helps :)

The thing that was very eye opening for me was the realization that I have more than 300 t-shirts, which means I could wear different one every day through the whole year and I still would have tshirts left 😢 and it really did not look like 400, when I told someone I had that many they were like nooo, this is like 100 most .. well I counted when decluttering .. in 3 years got rid of more than 20 huge bags of clothes .. just keep going, great thing is to declutter like 5 items a day, it doesn't hurt that much, you just pick what u don't love that particular day 😅 we have to try different methods, because the stuff is sneaky and manipulative, it can always persuade us we need to keep torn faded stained tshirt because WE HAVE TO 😀

I've done mass clean outs in the past as my weight fluctuated. I was still hanging on to smaller sized clothes I wore in my 20s when I was in my 40s. I realized that those styles didn't suite me anymore, even if one day they might fit again. It is hard to let go of a goal, even if it is unrealistic. I'm 57 now and I'm still learning. I still make some regrettable clothes purchases. I thrift a lot of my clothes, so I don't feel too bad when something doesn't work out. I just re-donate it. I've got several bags of clothes ready to donate to a church charity. After watching your video, I pulled a few additional items out of the closet and dresser to add to my donation.
Also, please don't use this donation to rationalize buying more clothes. Whenever I think I need more clothes, I do a fashion show at home. I hang all my work clothes on a rolling rack, and then I make outfits. I review the results in a full-length mirror. I'm always surprised at how many different outfits I can make with the items already in my closet. This is also a good way of identifying articles of clothing that don't coordinate with anything else you own. I'm very guilty of buying something with a fun print or unusual color only to find out I have nothing to wear with it.

I kept "one day" clothes in my closet, tags on, for ten years. Do not let your clothes make you feel bad about yourself. I gave 80% of them to my best friend two weeks ago and donated the rest. I saved two "one day" outfits because I'm like 30 pounds from wearing them comfortably and I am trying to do better... but cake exists sooo... 😂
I saved two shirts in my cedar chest. My highschool graduation shirt and my proud Mama shirt from when my daughter graduated highschool. I had to be really tough on myself because I was running out of real estate for things that make me happy and saving it for clothes that made me sad made no sense to me. You're doing great. I watch Jodi Dunn declutter her house and she always says that sometimes it takes a few rounds to be ready to part with something, and maybe you'll never be ready, and that's ok too. Have a lovely day dear ❤

I find Dana K White's "container concept" hugely helpful. You evaluate what to keep based on the space (container) you have. When there's too much to easily fit in the space, you keep your favorites and take out your less favorites. You evaluate what is most container-worthy to keep. Also, if you buy anything new (which you don't seem to need to do) then you decide which is more container-worthy: the new item or something you already own.

I struggle with the fact that while I have a huge walk-in closet, so it doesn’t look so overstuffed, it is full of all kinds of clothes that are not in good condition, that I don’t look good in, or never wear for any other reason, and yet there they are, making me feel guilty every day, ha. My closet will probably look strange if I ever go through and actually only keep the clothing I (should) wear. Maybe I should just sort one side to be my favorite things and put everything else on the other side and then give myself time to see that I inevitably don’t need those things and can then sweep them into trash bags. 😅

She did her first round of decluttering on a couch just like you 🧡and it was crazy! She almost gave up but then, an amazing thing happened - after a while she started to just pick out random pieces of clothes that don't really fit her, aren't her style or the ones she just doesn't want anymore. So maybe I recommend having a basket or something near your closet where you can quickly throw the pieces which no longer serve you? Anyways, good job and I wish you all the best 🩷

I call this layering, that is, I declutter by "layers"... every few months I can go back over a drawer or clothing category. The best idea is to pick out your FAVORITES, then get rid of half of what is left, or thereabouts... a dear friend taught me how to declutter, or decrease clothing years ago, and while I tend to collect, I now know how to declutter. Also consider you are "regifting" someone who shops thrift and may need it. That helps give up sentimental items also.

Well done! ❤ Decluttering is really difficult because of all the underlying emotions to process with each decision.
I've been on a decluttering journey for 3 years... started with clothes then gradually through all areas of the home. THEN I started decluttering the friendships/relationships and work dynamics that were damaging me.
Interestingly I found the clothing declutter was the area that required the most multiple passes. I wonder if it's because it's so personal? Anyway, please be proud of your fantastic effort here... who knows? You may come back and do some more.
And I suspect decluttering the impatient/intolerant attitude towards oneself becomes an important lesson.

The first declutter is always the hardest! Once you start flexing that muscle it only gets stronger with time. Just remember it’s not a one time thing or an excuse to refill your closet with new unnecessary things. Wait for a big seasonal change, like midway through summer and go through it again. You’ll start to see items that you don’t wear for each season and it’ll help you let go of so much! I try to keep up on clothing declutters in a warmer season and a cooler season each year. It’s helped with letting things go more than most methods 😂 It’s easy to say oh I’m saving that shirt for summer. But when it’s been summer for a while and I still haven’t worn it I know it’s time to let it go lol

As an older woman I question the current hoarding trend on clothes. When I was younger clothes were a big expense. New purchases had to work into my wardrobe. Everything had to mix and match. Clothing has become, with some exceptions, so cheap people think nothing about running out and grabbing several shirts and pants that are really not needed.
I understand the declutter tidal wave, and reacquire process, is creating a huge problem in land fills and third dumping.
These comments are not directed at the utuber but to begin a conversation about our culture in general.
I think the young lady made a good start. But why so many hoodies??? Guess I missed this trend???

Great job! I've found it helpful to take pictures of the 'sentimental' items and set them aside. Photos of great-memories shirts will preserve the good but also mean you don't have to keep them as they wear out. Do another declutter of the remaining items in a month or so and you will be amazed how much more you don't need! Enjoyed your video, looking forward to more!

The first time I did this I was so overwhelmed…. Keep plugging away, it gets easier every time you do it.. it helped for me to actually try everything on, even though I like or loved something, it may not fit or feel comfortable anymore, which made the decisions a lot easier. I also kept separate piles of items most worn, like the backwards hanger trick.. if I hadn’t worn something in an arbitrary amount of time, I got rid of it..

You did a fantastic job! I recently decluttered my wardrobe and found having a game plan really helpful. I listed all my categories before going near my clothes and wrote down how much I needed of each (e.g work outfits for each day of the week, 3 sets of pjs, 2 jumpers) - I’m in Australia. But I found it really helpful then going category by category and choosing how many items I could keep and picking my favourites. You don’t have to choose low numbers but by seeing the number you choose to keep that may help declutter. We are all on this journey together and our wardrobes feel so much better even with just a couple of pieces taken out so well done on 101!!! Can’t wait to keep watching your journey!

about a year ago I read a book (the conscious closet) that made me really commit to decluttering my clothing. I have done three closet purges since then, but with significant time in between so I could determine what I really wanted to keep and where the gaps were in my wardrobe! decluttering your clothing with intent takes awhile and 100+ pieces on the first round is awesome. congrats!

I decluttered my closet and then I decluttered about the same amount again, just by trying things on. It might look cute and it might fit you, but the minute you try it on it might not fit right or you don’t really like how it looks and then you can toss it without it just sitting in your closet for another year. I also find it awesome to declutter my closet and dresser weekly because then you can get rid of something you made an excuse for a few weeks ago.
Also I live by the box in box out method. Every time you get a box of some sort from Amazon or maybe it’s from diapers or maybe it’s from bulk buying your food at Costco whatever box it is that comes near your house fill it with stuff to Declutter. That way you’re constantly always decluttering and never keeping stuff in your house that you don’t use.

This is my life now! I’ve been declutterring the house putting it in the car and driving it to Goodwill.
It is not easy I’ve been praying and asking God for motivation because it’s not easy at all. Today after work I’m going home and taking every piece of item out of my room putting it in a box and bye-bye it goes. I’ve noticed because I’ve gained weight I wear the same thing over and over so that’s all I’m keeping. Also there are less fortunate people out there and I just want to bless someone else. ❤

I start in the closet...if I havent worn it in 2 yrs its gone , all stuff thats eorn, stained, has a hole or snag is gone for sure. I fluctuate in size so i seperate by phase/size also. Then move to the dresser drawers and then pull a few bins out at a time. After you finally went through it all and elimena good bit. Do another glance through and be real with yourself.
For me I ultimately came down to a magic number of 5....(per size/weight phase) kept 5 jeans/t shurts/blouses/skirts/dresses/dress pants/uniforms/ect....kept 15 summer socks/winter socks/panties...10 bras. You get the whole idea!!

I've been decluttering as well, hauling off 4 truck loads and donating 5 bags of clothes.
Decluttered a lot of pots and pans. I simply don't use
Threw out a lot of makeup as I only kept 1 pallet of neutral colors and got rid of hair accessories since I went to a shorter style.
Took to thrift store to make a little money ALL but Clothing that I put in donation boxes.
We have a food pantry, so 8 donated food, and yes, I checked and tossed expired food and tossed out old spices.
Took to thrift store all but 4 purses.
At least what I took to thrift store I get 50 % of the money😊
Donated to my Parish several Catholic books I no longer read.
Donated some Rosaries to my Parish so they can give out at the prison retreat they do.
Got rid of a lot of jewerly..
My taste has changed, so thrift store they went.
Extra blankets since we bought an electric blanket.
Now, if my hubby would let me declutter his closet and sons. 😅They said their closet is off limits😅😅😅😅😅😅

Hun, you did so well. As someone who has helped many declutter and who declutters myself on the regular I understand the turmoil. A lot of cluttering has to do with our mental state, a catch 22 really. When things are cluttered we are stuck, when we are stuck things get cluttered.
One thing I recommend always which you did was to work in catagories. I love that you sorted things first.
Also it can be overwhelming to begin, starting with a drawer is often a wonderful place. Think knickers. Empty the drawer, toss old, ripped, stained, ones. Fold the good ones. Do the same with socks and bras. You will feel so much better having only good ones when you open them.
You choose what you want to declutter next and think about this, does it fit, are there any holes, stains, rips, do should seams sit on your shoulders or not, does it flatter your shape, is the colour good on you, is it your style?
What also helps is pinning pictures on pinterest of things you like clothes wise to get a sense of your style. Refer to these while going through your things to see if they align with that.
Remember if you are sad about letting something go that someone else will have joy in wearing it. You have already had that joy and can look forward to new things.
Continue to go through your things on a regular basis and you will see you have more things that you will be able to let go of the second and third time around. Celebrate your wins. You should be excited to open your closet. Your clothes should never dictate what you wear so only have things that fit. Never items that fit on "skinny days" etc.

Well done! Helping 101 items to a new home isn’t trivial, it’ great. I did a big declutter after Covid. Some things were decades old (I’m 58.) some things that help with maintenance: 1. Have only one season in your closet at a time, the other in storage boxes. It will help the closet breathe. 2. Turn your hangers the wrong way - this alerts you to not having woan item in a long time (some people pack items not worn for a whole season into an “emotional withdrawal box.” 3 kerp a donarion box in your closet. If you decide something has to go, thank it and fold it away, then donate whr]en full. …… all this workec great for me until I bought 5 items on eBay, so I still havd ways to go 😁

    Hi Mackenzie!
A good first round of clothes declutteing.
You will find that is becomes easier both to declutter and to not bring stuff home, later on in the process. You will also find that you really don´t need that much clothes.
You say that in 2024, you will try to only bring new clothes home if the item replaces another one. You could try this... If an item is worn out or for other reason no longer serves you, ask yourself if you already god something in your closet to replace it with instead of bringing in new items. That can be a natural way of decluttering.
And, do the hanger trick. Turn all hangers with hanging clothes backwards and when you take an item out and use it, hang them back the right way. That is how you know if you really use an item. Affter a season, 6 months, a year look at what items never got used and consider to declutter them.
Clothes that you no longer use but want to keep for sentimental reasons, special dream items to fit in to later aso, stop looking at them as clothes for a while. You might benefit from keeping them in a closed container instead of among the clothes you use. If you only have your current wardrobe out it´s easier to choose and to get to know what is really what you want to wear.
Nice to watch you start a new journey and looking forward to follow your steps. /Anna from Sweden

I had recently did a major declutterring of my room. And by recently I mean in December
As it was a mixture of things that made it that way. Number one being way too much stuff. Mostly clothes. I had basically placed myself in a mindset of: if I had to move today what would I take with me? Is this really a style I vibe with for myself?
Another thing that really helped was separating my clothes into piles much like you had did and sliming down the sets as I went. Once I was done I had tried on all of the clothes I said I wanted to keep to slim it down some more as I could no longer fit into them.
Of course this wasn’t in the course of a day as it took me a full month to go through everything. As every week I will go through my closet and see if I have a change of heart on a few items I have and place them in the bag before taking it to a thrift store to give away. Still am.

As a long-time minimalist, I'll say that you did fantastically! Decluttering is a multiple pass-through process. The first pass-through is when you process what you like vs. what you don't like. Now that you have smaller piles, the second step is going through again and assessing each item against the rest of its category. It changes your perspective greatly. Instead of asking, "do I like this?" (which you most likely do because you own it), ask "what role is this playing in my closet?" For example, if you have two dark-washed bell-bottom jeans, you only need one. Choose the one with higher quality, that fits better, etc. After this second pass-through, put everything away except for the things that don't fit you. Those get stored separately so they're not cluttering up your actual closet. For the items that especially no longer fit, donate those. By the time you lose the weight, your sense of style/what's in style will likely have vastly shifted. Plus, keeping things like that effectively traps you in a more negative and less-present state of mind. Good work! Keep it up. :)

A tip would be for the clothes you can hang, to always face the hook of the hanger one way, when you wear something you put the hanger the other way. This way, if you still have hangers that never turned in , let’s say 6 months, you can get rid of those clothes. You’ll not miss them, because you never reached for them

When items that get hung up, go up after a clean-out I turn the hangars around backwards. That way, things I WEAR get worn and go on a turned around the right way hangar and the obvious clothes I don’t wear…stay on a backwards hangars forever till next clean out. There are something’s this doesn’t work for, formal dresses and seasonal winter coats but it means I don’t hoard things that I don’t wear. bi-annual clean out this way done EASY. After winter, more winter wear esque things go in a storage bin and the backwards hanger items are donated. So, less 😢 and more “I literally haven’t worn this in months/years so it doesn’t matter if I love it on the hanger I clearly don’t love it ON me. Buh-bye.”

I could not relate to this more. I've spent the last 1.5 years decluttering my parents' hoarding house, a lot of which was my clothes! I have two pieces of advice - firstly you need to do more than one pass when decluttering. So this is pass number one, and at some point do another pass, and then a third. Also if you really can't decide whether to get rid of something have it out, so you see it. Within a few days you'll either be happy to let it go, or want to keep it. You don't have to get rid of a lot of stuff! If you really can't decide you can keep it and do another pass. Hoarding comes from worrying about the bad feelings you'll have if you get rid of stuff, and you have to sit with those feelings rather than try to find ways of avoiding them (ie hoarding the stuff!)

A way I’m able to declutter things (because I get attached to everything and start coming up with ways to wear it when I know I won’t and I haven’t worn it for like a year) is putting it away in the bag/box and keeping the box around, but I can’t see what’s in it. And then as time goes on and I fill the box more and more, if I don’t look for that item, I obviously didn’t need it. The key is not looking around in the bag/box and reminding myself that item is there 😂 but that’s how I’m able to declutter, just slowly over time put things I don’t want into a bag and once the bag is full it gets donated lol

I’m doing a v deep closet cleaning. I’m a man, but the struggle is unisex. I wind up wearing the exact same things too. However, I’m compartmentalizing my things like- band tshirts in one box, and non current sportswear/collectible shirts in another. I keep the band Ts bc want to commission someone to make me a “concert quilt”, and the athletic items bc they’re seasonal. If I didn’t remember an item existing, I “test” possible outfits. If I “need it”, it stays. If I’m being over dramatic about the item, and it’s not worn in a week, it goes. If it’s an important collectible, I will sell it. Personally, and Idk if you did, but I would sell the Cody Ko merch, but I am also a broke college student, so I’ll sell if it’s worth it. I keep merch from RUclipsrs bc it’s like a relic imo. And something I learnt the hard way, is if you don’t wear and donate it, but you think about the item a lot, you may get frustrated with yourself. A clean sweep is sometimes incredibly necessary, but a closet purge doesn’t work for everyone!! If anyone read my novella, I’m a sentimental man who grew up on Carhartt, where it was good for life. Once I learnt fashion, now all my items are good for life. Rip. Good luck to anyone/everyone doing this! Proud of you!
