- My review of the Malevolent Seven by Sebastien DeCastell! An extremely fun and exciting whirlwind of a novel, filled with humor, explosions, big magic and big egos. Who wins in a world where there's just the bad guys and the badder guys?

And my TBR list grows longer. Sounds right up my alley. Love some swashbuckling magical adventures.
Shot water out my nose when you mentioned "faerie fire". Thanks for the laughs (not so much for the clean-up). :D
Its so good!!! I want a sequel!!!
I'm with you, I don't know if anything could ever beat my love for Greatcoats. But I'm very excited to get to this hopefully soon! You have me intrigued about the creative magic application.
Got my broken binding order in.
Me too. I took a chance even though I haven't read his stuff before.
I love de Castell's writing style and can't wait for this book!
If so, it's another winner!
This sounds really cool, I'm definitely interested in checking it out. Great review as always, Allen.
Yes! Its already on the way!
I just started reading the great coats on your recommendation. Love them!
So excited for this! I picked it up the day of release. My TBR is loaded up for this month (books 2-5 of Dagger and Coin and then City of Last Chances), but hopefully I can squeeze this in before I dive into the next series in the lost.
De Castell is so much fun to read!
Great review!! This was my first De Castell and I loved it!!
I haven't read DeCastell yet but I definitely wanna check him out.
Great review!
Funny story, I was convinced to buy The Greatcoats because another RUclipsr was telling us about the books she hates, and she mentioned The Greatcoats as one of them. She said it was really stupid, and the author was portraying the characters as doing really heroic things, but the things they were doing were actually horrific. She kept talking, and after hearing a few "keywords" come out of her mouth, I realized that she was on the far end of the opposite side of the political spectrum, and it all clicked.
She also hated some of my favorite books of all time, so I basically used her as a foil, expecting to hate what she loves and love what she hates. I bought the entire Greatcoats series, because of that, but still haven't read it. I'm fairly sure I'm going to like it, even if it doesn't end up being a favorite.
I do this a lot too...I watch several people who are my "anti tbr" so I don't buy those books or if certain ones hate a book, I know I'll usually like it. 😅
Not tried any books by DeCastell, but this makes me intrigued to give him a try. I'll add this to my wish list and hopefully read it sometime this year. Thanks Allen.
Great Review!
I am 100pages into the book and it is my First Castell Novel. I immedeatly Fell in love with the writing Style and creative Lore/Magic system.
Is the Greatcoats series similar to this in Tone, Perspective and writing Style? If so, I think i have found a new favorite author.
I picked this up when you talked about it during one of your weekly updates or something, and it released yesterday I think. I'm glad it turned out great. I will get to it at some point.
I liked the Greatcoats. It wasn't my favorite, but I read the whole thing so it was at least good enough for that. This sounds more like something I would like. I'll add it to my list.
Goodness this sounds right up my alley -- a must read for sure!
Yes
Thanks Allen enjoyed this review 😊
I just finished this last night and had a blast with it. I really hope there is a sequel! Its my first DeCastell, and now I'll be moving The Greatcoats up my tbr pile
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I also hope there's going to be a sequel!
IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS BOOK!
I was just thinking there weren't enough wizards in modern day fantasy. I'll definitely check this out!
That's a good point! Wizards have fallen off the same way dwarves have.
I just bought two kindle books because of Allen. Do I need more books??? NO!!! But I feel like I need to get in the mind of his great man! So yea, got the Josiah babel book and guards guards. Oh, and did I mention I am a third through Imperium???? Me, who can stand history! Allen, thanks for the gateway drug to historical fiction. It would be helpful if you could do videos to supplement some of these historical books because some of us (me) have no recollection of what we learned (mumble mumble)… decades ago in school. Thank you, your humble scholar
Sounds interesting! I haven’t read De Castell yet, but I’m a big fan of suicide squad type stories.
*le sigh* yet another book for the TBR…
Allen likes a book with themes of justice? Shocker!!
Haha no but seriously, great review! I feel like de Castell has the perfect authorial voice for this type of story. And I am also always a big fan of breaking the fourth wall. Looking forward to this one!!
Hahahahaha I know, right? Almost guaranteed to be a winner with me
Sounds fun!! Would this be a good place to start with DeCastell, or would you still recommend Great Coats first?
*Boom* 💥
Watching now, this better be good
Also, first
I’m not a fast reader but I have blown through the greatcoat books, I’m on book 4 and got a 1/4 to go and wow really good author and series!
His writing reads SO quickly
Dammit, i forgot to pre-order this!
I love De Castell's use of first person perspective, especially how he wrote friendship from a singular point of view. Its so good, Allen! Its so good!
where's the link for pre-ordering it? Sorry if I"m being completely blind :D
I forgot to put it up!!
I made the same Deadpool reference in my video 😂😂
I’ve seen several books recently with this type cover.
I also wanted to read this! I haven’t read Castellated yet but thought this would be a good starting point
Is this a standalone book? Or start of a new series?
Sounds like it employs "horseshoe theory", where the far-left and the far-right are almost the same thing.
:D
Amazing to me that people seemed to like this book.
I persevered to the end even though I wanted to hunt down the narrator and throttle him.
And the writer? What kind of exposition was that? Ever heard of world building or letting us in on the joke? Man… I was trying to understand the hundred thousand types of wizard or “Sirlord” whilst adding types of my own that would render each helpless. Crappy design.
Why do people like this? Have you people never heard of Logen Ninefingers or Ringil Eskieth?
