    From what I've seen, Linus has a consistent record of not allowing sponsorships and investments to affect his opinion on a given piece of hardware. He's also been good about owning up to it when he makes a mistake.

      He's pragmatic to know that whatever sponsorship money he'd be getting isn't worth the hit to his reputation for integrity.
      I don't understand how people don't comprehend that.
      Mathwise, it just makes more sense to have more subs and a loyal fanbase which equals more views, more sponsors and more merch sales.
      It simply wouldn't make sense for him to be a shill.

    • @johnnypopstar

      The devil's in the detail on this, because what *they* consider "burn-in bad enough to deserve a refund" and what *you* do, may not be the same. They'll also probably replace with another refurb/returned unit too. Lastly, there might be some sort of caveats on usage - the monitor might be logging hours it's powered on and this might need to be below a certain value for them to allow a return.
      All that to say - looks good as a headline, but there'll be detail there to figure out.

    Funny thing about this video, although I am fully aware this is the best OLED monitor on the market right now, it just shows you an OLED in a ridiculously bright room, so we perceive a really dim screen, catching all reflexions and blacks looking gray. I've read that QD-OLED uses a triangle configuration for its subpixel so red and blue at the bottom and green on top so that you have first row red, blue, red, blue and the next row all green and next again red, blue, red. So at high contrast edges like window edges on your desktop or in-game HUD you have artifacts that look similar to chromatic aberration. Not many sites are talking about that but on the other hand not many sites that tested the monitor do extensive testing that goes beyond just looking at it or doing a calibration test.

    • @seyeryej
      @seyeryej 2 года назад +39

      You can see it at 12:05 in the video with the white lettering that sits on top of the Windows toolbar. The words "Rain Coming", take a look at the top edge of those white letters, and you will notice a green hue. Now look at the bottom edges of those very same letters, and you notice a purplish hue. So when the white area ends, the green subpixel is running along the upper edge, and its bright enough to notice. When the white area ends at the bottom, the red and blue subpixels, together, look like purpose and it forms a purple edge.
      So any bright, almost near-white, area that is besides a dark colors, near-black area, you're going to see this. This may actually be more noticeable when using the monitor for web browsing and office computing programs.

    • @timramich

      @cosmindinaa 2 года назад +7

      Stop expecting to pay more goddammit. This is how manufactures sell us overpriced products. Technology is supposed to be affordable because they continuously invest in efficient manufacturing techniques on large scale, to maximize profit and pump out as many units as possible. As more time goes by, oled should become more and more affordable. And there is no wonder oled is cheaper than minileds, simply because oleds are easier to manufacture and involve less complexity than minileds. If you ask me, oled is hugely overpriced than it should really be. Samsung has huge fabs and could make this panel a lot cheaper. But price is dictated by novelty and lack of competitive pricing.

I currently have an LG gl850-B wich is 1440p 144hz and it's a great monitor, I don't see 4k as a worthwhile improvement due to how much more power it takes to run so i could justify 3440x1440 and have a 3080 ti to run it. I don't game heavily and may have issues with desk space but if i really love this when i get it and the contrast and response time improvements are that much better than i will just buy a vesa mount. @@Mark-oy8pf I got the monitor a couple of days ago and it’s incredible. I haven’t started the Witcher yet because I’m waiting for my 6950 XT to arrive and finally replace my 2070 Super. This old girl has treated me well for the last 3 years but I’ve been wanting an upgrade for a while. I was hoping to grab a 3080 when those came out, like everybody else, but we all know how that went. So I stuck with the 2070 Super for a little while longer than I thought I would. But in reality, for 1440p, it’s still an excellent card. I just wanted something that could run almost anything at max settings and still have very high frame rates. Especially now that I’ve got this insanely beautiful monitor.
      I knew I’d be switching to an Radeon graphics card so I was pleased about saving some money and going with the Freesync Premium Pro version instead of the G-Sync Ultimate version. I know that Nvidia cards work with Freesync too but it’s definitely optimal to use G-sync with Nvidia and Freesync with AMD.

    I got this monitor almost a week ago, upgrading from an AW3418DW. It's is quite nice. But there are a few nit picks. The pixel refresher is quite aggressive and runs whenever the monitor goes to sleep if it's been on for at least 4 hours consecutively. Afterwards the monitor turns off and you have to manually turn it back on. Also the application of the coating/top layer on the screen isn't perfect. Seems there are a few spots where there are a little air bubbles or something there. It's quite hard to see unless under the right circumstances but is something I noticed on mine.

The colors, and smoothness of this displays motion really has to be seen to be believed. I'm reinstalling lots of my gaming library of the last 7 years to test this monitor. Everything has been impressive, even Witcher 3 which I didnt think could look any better or smoother.

    The sub pixel layout is kinda weird, in an unusual triangular shape, which causes "chromatic aberration" around high contrast elements (text, straight lines... It's particularly visible on white text over a black background).

    Linus has, to my mind, a better reputation for infallibility than basically anyone else in the tech news space. I know I can trust Linus’s take in a video whether it’s sponsored or not, because I’m sure that if he screws up there will be some kind of level-headed response to the pushback he gets. That reputation, along with the great content coming out of the massive, supportive business he’s created, always makes me come back for one video or another.

    Bought it for ~$700 on dell outlet with only 90 days warranty, but considering the price and the quality of the display, I can take the risk. For $1200 I would still probably buy it if I have no other choice. I did some reading about this monitor and seems like burn-in is not that big of a issue like with the early oled's. When I mounted this monitor next to my other (decent) IPS panels, you don't want to go back.
    However, I have to say that for productivity/work with text, this is not the best choice. Fonts are not sharp and high brightness may cause your eyes to hurt. Lowering the brightness is affecting the contrast. I found that switching to eco mode helps a bit.

    Its great, I just got it. I would disagree though the 5% 1000 nits window is sufficient. I mean its a flaw I can live with for sure as the general contrast an PQ is amazing -- but I miss super bright scenes a little bit over my old x35. Sure looking at a white screen of 1000nits is hard to look at, but that doesnt happen often. On the x35, the sky in games is a soild 800nits which I think looks awesome. Its all trade offs though and this AW monitor still wins. I feel the pricing on this product is excellent also.
