Of course the leaves are edible, too. Don't waste them. I grew these in 5-gallon BPA-free food-grade buckets, made in USA, using the techniques explained in All My Secrets of Organic and Container Gardening So Far. One advantage of the buckets is that they are lighter in weight and can be easily moved around in the backyard into full sun at any time of day. It is also simpler to re-use the soil and they don't take up much garden space. The buckets were full of sweet potatoes when turned over and dumped out.

Sweet potatoes flourish in slightly acidic to neutral soil conditions, ideally within a pH range of 5.5 to 6.5. The use of a greyish powder, if it were cement containing lime, would actually increase the soil's alkalinity when mixed with water, which could be counterproductive for sweet potato growth. Cement is not typically used in horticulture for pH adjustment due to its strong alkaline nature and potential to disrupt soil and plant health.
