      It's been several years, but one good summer I was able to take a plate and a knife out to the garden and make a full salad, everything except the dressing. This year my goal is to do it again. My area is too hot to grow lettuce in the summer but I can grow spinach.

    WARNING! At 02:00 minutes we see in your video that you applied a greyish powder "CEMENT" to a halved sweet potato before encasing it in wet straw. I wanted to discuss the potential implications of this practice and ensure accurate information for your audience.
    Sweet potatoes flourish in slightly acidic to neutral soil conditions, ideally within a pH range of 5.5 to 6.5. The use of a greyish powder, if it were cement containing lime, would actually increase the soil's alkalinity when mixed with water, which could be counterproductive for sweet potato growth. Cement is not typically used in horticulture for pH adjustment due to its strong alkaline nature and potential to disrupt soil and plant health.
    If the goal is to adjust the soil pH to the sweet potato's preferred range, there are other substances that could be considered, which are also greyish in colour and more appropriate for use in gardening:
    1. Rock Phosphate: Often greyish, this can add phosphorus to the soil, aiding root development.
    2. Perlite: This can improve soil aeration and drainage, beneficial for root growth.
    3. Horticultural Lime: While usually white, it can appear greyish and is used to raise the pH of overly acidic soils.
    4. Potassium Sulphate: A greyish mineral that provides potassium and sulphur, both essential nutrients for plants.
    If the powder you used is indeed one of these substances or another beneficial amendment, it would be helpful to specify this to your viewers to avoid any confusion and ensure the best practices for growing healthy sweet potatoes.
    Thank you for your dedication to gardening education, and I hope this information is helpful for you and your audience.

    Two questions:
    1. Why do you put cement on the cut end of the tubers. Is this to dry them out?
    2. Why do you trim the leaves at intervals?

  • @willbass2869
    @willbass2869 6 месяцев назад +40

    No need to cut in half and plant the tuber. Just pull the sprouts off and plant them in the bag.
    The tuber can stay in the "incubator" to produce more sorouts for staggered planting

    The density of soild in the ground is more dense and takes more energy to push through it. The soil bag is lesser in density and the bag itself has a small bit of flexibility and less constriction so the soil is actually better to breath and takes less energy to grow into it.

      I find that's not really the case. Mine are grown in-ground in clay soil and I don't have an outdoor place to store them, so they get washed and brought inside, then stored in cardboard boxes at room temperature after they have surface dried. Any scuffs from washing heal up within a week and the roots store just fine for about a year, gradually drying out as they sprout. I also don't cure, though I'm pretty sure that is useful for developing sugar content. I prefer them more on the starchy side and use them in savory dishes, though, so the additional sugar isn't important to me.
      As an aside, I don't think these are large tubers! I had quite a few in the 2.5-5 pound (1-2 kilo) range this year.

      I left mine in a bucket on the porch for a few days, and we had a heavy rain that blew into the bucket. I'd planned on just brushing them off then storing them, but they were unintentionally washed. They have not lasted as long as they had previously. I've had to inspect them every few days, and when they have some bad spots I cut them out and make bread and cookies. So it turned out OK, but I only had a few survive long enough to make slips. This year I will process what I pull right away.

    Посадил половину клубня - вырыл целый клубень. И еще полгода с ним работай. Поливай, обрезай, опоыскивай, удобряй.
    Это лучше морковь посадить. Сажаешь семенами, через 3 месяца- урожай. За 6 месяцев собирешь 2 урожая моркови. А если сажать картошку, то сажаешь половину клубня, а через 3 месяца выкопаешь 10 клубней

    I do it more or less the same way, but accidently I found out that even the soil where the main root is growing is really dry, the sweet potato could still survive. I think this is because there are a lot of white roots along the branches which could absorb water. This then prevent the fungus from attacking the sweet potato which is covered by the plastic since it's very dry.

    • @DIYGardenIdeas
      @DIYGardenIdeas  7 месяцев назад +1

      Well, it seems like sweet potatoes are the superheroes of the vegetable world, defying all odds and surviving in the driest of soils! Who needs water when you have a bunch of white roots to suck it up? 😄

    Great video…. Many thanks….I live in Scotland and have to grow them in a polytunnel as cold here…. Have had varying success…. my problem with sweet potatoes is mainly storage … too many of them rot…. The ends are often open …. Could you please advise …. Do you dip open ends in cement powder prior to storage or what ? Thanks

      How to preserve fresh sweet potatoes with paper: With this method, you just need to use paper to wrap each sweet potato and stack it on top of each other, keep it at the appropriate temperature, avoid direct sunlight and do not leave it in places high humidity. Before wrapping, potatoes also need to be dry and not wet to avoid mold.@@giespel68

    this is awesome, what kind of soil are you growing the tubers in

  • @jimronsonet5764
    @jimronsonet5764 7 месяцев назад +17

    You would get a far better set per plant if you didn't put the cut sweet potato in rhe soil. All you need to do is cur the sprout from bedded sweet potatoe(which was also not done efficiently) and plant 1 plant 12" away from the next. Sweet potatoes are storage roots, not tubers.

      Is this real

    • @brandonlantier
      @brandonlantier 7 месяцев назад +1

      Exactly, sweet potatoes are related to morning glories and not actually potatoes. Slips are super easy to grow, just stick a couple toothpicks in half the SP, fill a container with water to submerge the bottom portion of the SP, and put in a sunny window or under a light, remove slips and plant or you can root the slips then plant.

    Growing in bags a cute idea but dont use the plastic ones, unless you like to eat plastic, it also gets into the soil/food.
