Then again, Bloodsport made in 1988 was based on Frank Dux's (alleged) competing in the (super-secret) Kumite in 1975. With Anchorman set in the 70's, the timelines make it imaginatively possible - but I agree, the scene still really makes no sense and it is wonderful.
You know how is James Marsden not like a super-duper star. He's incredibly talented and funny, can sing and dance, and is probably one of the most handsome guys on the planet, yet he's always cast as loser type characters who never gets the girl.
He actually said in an interview that he hated playing the stereotypical good looking guy when he enjoyed performing characters. I think his comedic delivery is brilliant. I just watched him in "The Stand" and was reminded of this scene. As much as I love Will and the team, Marsden and Greg Kinear really stole the scenes in this movie
In X-Men Franchise, his Girlfriend dumped him for Wolverine and then kill him. In Notebook, his Fiance back to her ex-boyfriend. In Superman Returns, his wife falling in love to Superman. In Enchanted, his Princess get "stolen" by a Widower. In Westworld her Girlfriend makes him kill himself. and now in Anchorman some idiot guys stole his position and embarrasing him in front of people. Let Me Introduce To You, James Marsden !

There are multiple total anachronisms in this movie. There is a reference to Ghostbusters and, then, maybe ten minutes or so later, actual footage from Scarface, neither of which would exist for years after the time during which the movie takes place.
I think the point is that, even thought it's incredibly risky, at this point, Jack's the most popular, he's smug and full of himself, and Ron is known for being washed up and working at Seaworld. From Jack's point of view, it's a foregone conclusion that Ron's lost, so it's worth the risk

I love how Van Damme in “Bloodsport” from 1988 appears, even though “The Anchorman” is set in the 1970s. Makes no sense, and it’s wonderful.
ANCHORMAN 2
Yeah but this is anchorman 2 that’s set in 1971

I like how Jack Lame got pulled back by his news team.
That’s the Donut Lord from Sonic Movie (2020).
jack lime has good ears
No, his name is Jack Lame.
The Bloodsport vision of Van Damme in Ferrel’s eyes literally made my drink come out of my nose in the theater.

I was so terribly worried for Ron at this stage. 🥺
Marsden doesn’t look like a “comedy guy” at all- he’s more like a pretty-boy heartthrob, yet he’s one of the most earnest actors at comedy.
Jack Lame should have been casted to played Johnny Cage in the new MK 2 movie
