Digital Homeschool Planning using NOTION (and why we won’t switch back!)

  • Take a look at how I use Notion to plan our homeschool!
    I made the switch from Trello to Notion around the time we took our winter break, and I haven’t looked back! At first it was COMPLETELY overwhelming (and I may have spent way too long trying to figure out formulas…) but by now I’ve gotten the hang of it. The comprehensive database tools pair very nicely with my paper planner for simply checking off things during the day. I also really appreciate the simple, minimal display; I find I'm much less likely to get distracted with how it looks and just get it done!
    Keep watching for a look at
    - how to set up databases with different page properties, tags, etc.
    - how to use Notion’s impressive filtering tools to customize views of your plans
    - how to create checklists and export them for printing, and
    - some reasons why I like (and will continue) using this tool
    Thanks so much for watching!

    I would love to see more about how you set up your pages for lessons. I love Notion and it has been working well for me for homeschool planning but you seem so much more organized than me with each lesson.

      I just wrapped up a "Back to Homeschool" planing series where I get ready to transition to a new school year. This part deals specifically with setting up lesson pages in Notion and might help you out: ruclips.net/video/HeTYMC44640/видео.html

    I love this! I really like notion for planning. I have only used notion for one month. We are primarily a unity study type homeschool. I can also say that you are much more detailed than I have been to date. I am playing with doing a brief syllabus type overview of the each unit a month or so before it starts and then having reoccurring checklists for the non unit daily tasks. One thing tho is I don’t tend to mark each and every page number out like you have it’s more like do the next lesson or page. I feel like if I try to get that specific I will end up getting stressed because some days we end up doing 10 pages and others we do 3. I wanted to backlog by hand but I’ve found I just like having everything digital and get lazy. I’m trying to tentatively plan our summer this way with the addition of my 2 year old ( playing preschool) to see how I can combine 3 kids.

      That sounds like a great plan! I probably am way too detailed, I tend to hyperfocus on things sometimes 😆

    Ok, so definitely would love some more tutorials on this... I feel like I just sat through day one of an intro to Notion professional development session and need the rest of the week's sessions to really figure it out. We are... slightly outside my forty one year old SAHM zone of proximal development here, but this feels like it might be the right step up from the five tabs of google tables I currently have open on my laptop as I plan for next year. 😂

      @@RegularSecularMama I'd love to see how you planned out which properties and views you wanted to include for your lesson planning database when you very first got started with it. I can tell it's something you're frequently updating, but did you initially sit down and physically mind map out what you wanted to keep track of or did you pull ideas from another planner you were already using or did you just dive in with Notion and brain dump and play around with it and create it more organically as you went along? I also think the progression view is neat and wouldn't mind seeing the step by step process of how you set up the database to allow for that... my oldest is all about tracking her progress and is motivated by seeing how far she's gotten, especially since we homeschool year round so we don't finish everything in a tidy package at the same time of the year. I've tried to do it manually for her with a spreadsheet and background cell color for each lesson and your version looks so much prettier and the percentages and dots combined are just *chef's kiss. Watching your video I was like, "Love the finished product, so confused about how she got there, even with copied code."

    • @RegularSecularMama
      @RegularSecularMama  2 года назад +1

      Got it! I’ll jot that down as an idea for a future video. It was definitely more “jump in and see what I find out” than actually planning out what I would need, especially with the lesson plans database (the book list is almost identical to how it looked in my Google document before)

      @@RegularSecularMama I played around with Notion's free trial this afternoon and it was super fast for me to make a 2022-2023 Curriculum database with everything I'm planning on using next, even with four school aged kids, so this looks like a great option for integrating all the different ways I've been trying to track everything. Honestly, it's also looking far more time efficient once the initial work of setting it up has been done. Thank you for making the video!

      Do you mean like a daily to do list to refer to during the day? I do this in a paper planner that I can keep out in front of me. I tried setting up a digital to do list, but it was a little finicky and I was spending extra time messing with it. I hope that helps 🤗

    I just found your channel and so glad as I am coming from Trello, looking for something more simplistic. I'm wondering if you can help me though. I combine Build Your Library, Torchlight, Blossom and Root, and have multiple children. I would like to see the books for the week and their page numbers. is that something that can be managed in Notion?

    • @RegularSecularMama
      @RegularSecularMama  Год назад

      That sounds tricky. Do you mean you want a database of all the individual reading assignments? Perhaps within each book’s page you could have a list of the page numbers selected, or what I do is list the reading selections in the history lesson with a link to the book page.
      I’m not sure of that helps at all, but I’m happy to chat more!

    • @RegularSecularMama

      I also label books with their week numbers which makes it easy to filter the database when I’m looking for which books to grab for the week.

    • @RegularSecularMama

    • @RegularSecularMama
      @RegularSecularMama  2 года назад

      Here’s the formula for the progress chart too (with the dots that fill in):
      slice("●●●●●●●●●●", 0, round(prop("Progress (Percent)") * 10)) + slice("○○○○○○○○○○", 0, round((1 - prop("Progress (Percent)")) * 10)) + " " + if(prop("Complete") == 0, "0", format(round(prop("Progress (Percent)") * 100))) + "%"

      When you are adding pages, you can set different properties. Common types of properties are text, number, drop-down menu, etc. One type is “formula” and that’s where you would use this. It pulls numbers from other properties (where you see it says “progress” which is the title of the property type percent). I’m sure there are videos explaining this part better than I could lol, but that’s the short version.
      I’ll have to see exactly how to share templates. I’m tech savvy to a limited extent 😂

      Yes! You can embed images, pdfs, websites, etc on pages themselves. I’m experimenting with adding things like this to the lesson itself rather than to the reflection pages I do once in a while; it might be easier to find that way.
