Frugal Friday! Recycled Boxes from Christmas Cards or Cardstock

- Hi friends! Before you toss out those leftover Christmas cards why not turn them into useful boxes for next year? It's a great way to recycle, or upcycle, those Christmas cards into something useful. You can even use them as drawer dividers or use cardstock to make these whatever size and depth you like!
Supplies needed:
Old Christmas cards or cardstock
Score pal (or ruler and butter knife) amzn.to/3qGTxMR
Score tape (or strong adhesive) amzn.to/3ETZElY *Affiliate links used
To make the recycled Christmas card box.
1. Cut the card in half at the spine. If your card is really thick you might want to trim 1/16" off the back portion of the card to make the bottom of the box a touch smaller.
2. Score and fold 1" from each side.
3. Snip score mark at corners to maker tabs and adhere to the inside of box.
4. Fit the boxes together, it should be a snug fit.
To make the cardstock boxes (I am using 110# card)
1. Determine how large you want your box to be and then add 2" to that measurement. That is the size for the bottom of the box. Take that measurement and add 1/8" to it and that is the dimension for the lid.
2. Score, fold and glue the box just like you did for the Chrismtmas card box.
Measurements for a box to hold A2 (5 1/2x4 1/4") cards and envelopes (these are the cards made from half a sheet of 8.5"x11" cardstock)
Bottom: 6 1/2"x8"
Lid: 6 5/8"x8 1/8"
Measurements for A7 (5"x7") cards and envelopes:
Bottom: 7 1/2"x9 1/2"
Lid: 7 5/8"x 9 5/8"
You can adjust the depth of the box by adding more to the original measurement and scoring in more for the edge. If I wanted a box that had a 2" depth instead of a 1" depth I would add 4" to my measurement (2" on each side) as opposed to 2" (which only gives me 1" depth on each side) I hope that makes sence. It's a pretty simple equation once you get the hang of it. You can also use these boxes to make custom drawer dividers so be creative and have fun with it!

I sculpt tiny nativities and started about 20 years ago using Christmas. Cards to make boxes to sell them iñ. Right after Christmas when cards go on sale really cheap I buy a bunch and make my boxes. People love it!

I am all about Frugal Friday!! This is awesome! As far as paper folding….somewhere along the way I picked up “bury the bump”. So I always remember to fold towards the raised score line. Bury the bump!!

Hi Lindsey....as a retired art teacher in a small school, the parents would donate old Christmas cards, and we used them a lot.. Like you, we used the personal greetings as part of each project. We made boxes like these, little churches that lit up, Christmas trees, saddle blankets for popsicle stick horses, and ornaments. What a treasure to have a stash of cards!

Hey Lindsey, I have every greeting card I have ever been given from the time I was little. I just started using them to embellish my albums. Thank you for a new Idea to use them on. I put the oldest ones in a scrapbook. They bring me much joy looking at them because the givers have now passed on. It’s a good reminder of how much my family has loved me over the years. 🥰

GREAT Idea! I love all the "crafty" items you make from the most unlikely items! Love the idea of using up not-so-favorite paper/printed cardstock. Using cards and cardstock to make themed or special boxes is a really frugal way of recycling and avoiding a trip to the Dollar Store! I plan on making Valentine boxes to hold little gift items for an event I sponsor. These boxes would also work well using Birthday cards! Can't wait for the next "Frugal Friday"!!!

Who wouldn’t like a frugal Friday? I’ve made boxes out of heavy weight card stock, but never out of pre-made greeting cards. Great idea. I have used them to make tags or cut with a die for a focal point. The pattern paper you used with the big flowers is gorgeous.

Thank you for sharing. I have several boxes that don’t have lids and they aren’t very useful for storing art supplies. I have the box making kit from Tuesday Morning and never thought about making my own box tops! I’ll be able to make free lids for most of the boxes I have. Thanks! Made a small box out of a free greeting card that came with a fundraising appeal. I used a hole puncher to make a half circle notch on both long sides to make easier to remove top lid as you recommended to size top & bottom same size if from greeting cards and top fits snug. Since I considered this first box a learning project, I just used regular desk tape (my fave Scotch Super-Hold) to secure corners. I was too lazy to go dig out my double-sided tape. These are easy to make, that's for sure!
