Senna had been saying things against FIA since 1984. And talking about how it was more a business than a sport. They never forgive him. They took the 1989 championship from him. They let Williams have the electronic advantages from 1991 to beat Senna and once he got the Williams in 1994 they changed the rules. Senna won 3 championships, almost 4, won many races and poles with FIA against him. He was greater than most people think.

It's like a bit surreal looking to this interview, 25 years later, knowing what happened just a few months after this. What I can say, is that, even though he wants to hide it, I think he already knew that year would have been very tough.

It's amusing to read all the "expert" comments about the FW16 being a crap car. The fact of the matter is that even with the twitchy rear-end (which was solved mid-way through the season), the Williams was still the best car on the grid at the start of the season. Senna had a couple bad-luck races and my money says he would have won Imola easily if not for the accident. That "crap" FW16 still won the constructors championship in 94.

It ' s not the way you saying man !!! FW 16 was very difficult to drive , set - up , and unpredictable ... Had huge aerodynamic problems !!! Get the facts right !!! Do a good research !!! To say that this car was the best even in the beginning of the season is a complete joke , ridiculous !!!! FW 16 was better by the end of the season , but was absolutely crap in the first ralf of it ... Changed a lot until the end of the year ... Damon Hill really struggled with the original version of the car !!! See the reality man ...

      From Newey's book:
Senna’s steering column had been changed to improve his driving position. Newey drew up the plans to relocate the steering column and decrease its diameter at one point. He described the changes as “two very bad pieces of engineering” which “Patrick [Head] and I were responsible for”. Following the crash Williams made tests of their steering column design. They found that despite the reduction in diameter and a fatigue crack on the shaft, the column was still useful.
However, Newey says he still feels “guilty” about the fatal crash. “I was one of the senior officers in a team that designed a car in which a great man was killed,” he said.
“Regardless of whether that steering column caused the accident or not, there is no escaping the fact that it was a bad piece of design that should never have been allowed to get on the car.”
“What I feel the most guilt about, though, is not the possibility that steering column failure may have caused the accident, because I don’t think it did, but the fact that I screwed up the aerodynamics of the car, I messed up the transition from active suspension [in 1993] back to passive and designed a car that was aerodynamically unstable, in which Ayrton attempted to do things the car was not capable of doing.”
They had one 2nd and a 6th from four races. I'd argue that once they made changes to the car and understood the setup, it became a competitive car. Senna had poles with it, but Hill was well off that pace, and driving around problems doesn't mean problems don't existing. Without two DSQs which had nothing to do with race pace, Benetton would have won the constructors. We know Senna also found the cockpit cramped because he said so during testing.

Ayrton's move from Maclaren to William's was the biggest mistake he made in his career. I think he would have been better off joining Ferrari but unfortunately it doesn't necessarily mean that he wouldn't have died in a formula one car.

A mistake? How can you say that? I am old enough and can remember very good how the things were in those years. Williams was a dominate power since middle 1991, and has literally destroyed its opponents in 1992 and 1993.Senna himself experienced that very much. And we know how Ferrari has performed in 1994. And Damon Hill, himself nowhere near to Ayrton, almost won the title that year.
