  • Today we get scientific and answer the age old question: how much weight does it take to break a skateboard!
We have 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 pound dumbbells to drop onto our skateboard from the heights of 6, 12, and 18 feet! Which drop will result in a broken board… leave it in the comments below?!

For this to be more scientific, you need separate boards for each. The same board has been compromised after so many drops of smaller weights.

One thing to consider is to try it again to see if it breaks exactly on a fresh deck as previous impacts my have weakened it. But either way this was an awesome vid!

Honestly the largest factor is how the force is hitting on the surface- the smaller area is going to be more impactful.
For example, huge difference if it lands sideways on both ends because theres more area to spread the force compared to vertically where it cant spread that force.

One time i dropped my board sideways like an inch and it fractured my big toe. Turned golf ball size... I hated that injury so much. lol Skateboard plies are alternating bi-directional grain, but if you focus it with one leg easier that's just concentrating the energy more in one spot. You know how they say, 'do heavy objects drop faster'? But a big piece of foam won't hurt like a coin if they fell on you, so rate is constant but force probably changes on weight. Also one can't carry the like 10lbs if it's too unwieldly or at the end of a 30 foot stick, hence dumbells being compact/dense...or self-contained. but thats just leverage.

Gabe Nigh, Braille Physics Guy. Nice experiment.
All it takes to break a 7.75" Mini Logo deck is a 150lb Asian and a five foot high shuv it to mute with a hard stomp a little tail heavy. I'm still a bit traumatized from witnessing that 2nd degree boardslaughter. Not sure what it takes to break my 8.0" DGK Stevie Williams deck yet. I guess it takes more than a 125lb mutt breed humanoid popping shuv its, 50-50 grinding everything and flipping out of primo stalls. I'm old. I don't go big anymore. I go home, eat a sammich and take a nap.

Bigger guys have hurled themselves down big stuff, but jaws is only 5'7" around 120lbs according to google. Just plain skinny lol. I'm around the same height and I could be that skinny but I'm way up there. When you land the board vibrates like crazy and they're built so the grain goes in both directions, every next ply alternates , by design, for strength. I ualso use a few tricks like stiffer bushings perosnally. When there's pumpkin pie and christmas cookies around me I aint got time to diet.
