To get past the gateway module, you need to find a star connector. Star connectors are junctions between all the modules and Chrysler has them in different places in each vehicle. If you backprobe a star connector with a spare OBD-2 port, you can plug in your scan tool and access all the modules. Chrysler teaches their techs this technique in their class.
Couldn't help but notice that the one time you didn't use brake cleen was on a brake job lol.
That's okay, go back and check other brake jobs he's done and you'll notice the ONLY time he doesn't do the Jump Scare brake clean move is on brake jobs. LOL
No need when rotors aren't changed.
Hub caps did'nt fly off.
I put Powerstop Tow pads and rotors on my Ram. Best pads ive used in my 46 years of wrenching. Stop better and no dust ! Makes the truck feel more confident in any braking situation.
Been lightly oiling wheel studs for 40 years. Never a problem.
Agreed.
Hand bananas? Todgers?
@Dave Stennett I notice that Ray did not brake clean the offending oil from the studs.
I cannot remember what car it was, possibly my Dad's 69 Mustang, but one of them has it in the process, and it also has a lower torque spec. I couldn't imagine lubing my wife's Edge as the torque is 160 lbft, which is enough to distort the studs if lubed
@@chuckd5819 As far as we know Ray did not advise the client that it was "unsafe" either.
owner of that truck timed that brake pad replacement perfectly.
Former bus mechanic here, with large buses you have 2 choices - lube the wheel stud threads, or never be able to remove the wheels again ;)
Sooooooooooo, what you are saying is that the wheels on the bus do what?
@@handbananaistherapist642 go round and round?
@@hellomyfriends9740
And there is an industry standard…
Torque -30% when using lubricants
@@rynoopperman5010 Good to know. Would have guessed higher.
Yayyyyyyy a 1 minute old video just as I sit at the laptop with a cup of Tea. Perfect late morning.
Wheel stud torque is 129 ft lbs. There was a recall on all Ram duallies from 2012 and newer when they switched to metric studs. Nobody at Chrysler noticed that the torque values in all service and owners literature had not been changed until last year. Apparently the old torque values resulted in some stretched studs.
You don't need your wheels torque to 129 ft lbs. When you're pushing your dodge off the road. :)
Any video/repair/upgrade where you can save the consumer money is a definite two thumbs WAY up!! I just wish there was some Brakleen used...LOL...a pet peeve of mine is the dingy looking calipers that always have brake dust in need of removal🙂
Having a real professional car lift is EVERYTHING!!! Working on your back the floor sucks and yields more time to repair, working in precarious angles and often leading to a less quality repair. Crawling in and out on your back is murder on your bones, but standing under a vehicle and working on it with good lighting just makes it!
I think you definitely need a self door closer on that door before you hit it thanks for the video which was very good
Should install a door at the front of the building.
@@grahamcockerill2406 That would be a bit more expensive than just putting a door closer on the existing door, and would also mean that the office could not be independently locked.
I cringe every time I watch him pull a rig in the bay.
Hub guided rim with flange nuts oiled lugs is recommended.
They usually only call for a drop on the threads and a drop between the flange and nut. This is on large trucks where the lug torque is 500 ft lbs.
I have know about Scotty Kilmer for 30 years. He used to live here in Houston Tx and was on TV frequently. Then suddenly 5 or more years ago TV stopped interviewing him. Shortly after moved to I think Tennessee
You don't have to apologize for not putting rotors on the truck. you were being a good mechanic, a good human being, and not ripping off your customer.
(True) Story time.
It was 10:27am on 28th December 1989 in Newcastle Aus.
I was working on a boat trailer (with boat still on it).
I had all the suspension and axles removed.
The boat and trailer were sitting on stands ONLY.
I went to my workshop to get some parts.
At that moment, an 5.6 Richter scale earthquake struck.
When I went back to see what happened to the boat and trailer, it was sitting on the ground.
It had fallen off the stands.
Had I been under it I would have been crushed.
Luck only made me climb out from under it and go to the workshop.
In that moment nearly all of the swiss cheese hole had lined up.
Yes an earthquake is an extreme event and not that I am expecting another earthquake however since that moment I have always used jacks + stands (with load shared) + wheels under the chassis (if the wheels are off).
I was young and stupid then but it was a valuable lesson learned.
You never know what strange circumstance may occur.
Remember, everything is trying to kill you.
Take care everyone.
You can use anti-seize on studs
The industry standard from bolt manufacturers are to reduce the torque by 30% when adding lubricants
The torque is developed by the tension on the seat of the lugnut against the rim, not in the threads. Don't believe me? Apply a small amount of wax ( lubricant) on the lug seat of the wheel. Then torque the nut to specs. You will strip the threads out before acheiving torque.
@@robertopenheimer1451 Thanks, this is good to know. I was contemplating putting anti seize on nut and bolt faces instead of threads because of our Northern oxidation problems
That may be okay if your the only guy ever to torque those lug nuts. If the customer goes to the tire shop for some reason the tire jockey has no idea about anti seize or other lube on the threads an is gonna torque them down to normal factory spec which at that point be over torquing things. Better off to just not add lube just like the factory does, then everyone will be on the same page with no risk of over torquing and having broken wheel studs.
The person who took the advice.......ALWAYS!
i love coasting from red to green
At my dad's shop we have two lifts outside. For the sole purpose of working on Winnebagos and commercial trucks. Because you can make A LOT OF MONEY!
REEE!
Love your videos Ray.
Regardless of what job your doin.
I like supporting my local youtubers.
What really impressed me was the fact that you got a turn out of every lug. You definitely didn’t stretch the bolts. That’s a rare treat. Thanks Ray.
@@traceyelliot8571 he didnt hear the *redacted* on the first wheel. :D
@@traceyelliot8571 you ever had stretched lugs? Your wheels will literally break away from the vehicle. It’s the most common cause of tyres separating in 4 wheelers. Tyre shops that can’t do that are very common.
My heart sank when you emphasised the checking of the rear view mirror, remembering the accident report this old po po took in the late 80's of a mother that backed over he 20 month old that ran out of the garage after her... Good reminder for ALL drivers
That's the reason why backup cameras are legally standard equipment as of 2018 model year for all manufacturers.
Good day to you Ray and Family. Glad you have a voice for this one
Bought one of the caliper spreaders via your link 😉
Another great learning video Ray. thank you for giving me the knowledge to help my son in law . Today I replaced his temp sensor which should have been a 5 to 10 min job. After a trip to the parts store and a successful purchase of a new sensor, I dropped the frickin’ retaining clip. GRAVITY !!!! And then a search failed so a second trip to the store. No luck buying a simple retaining clip so back to searching. After almost 1/2 hour I finally found the clip on top of the driver wheel swing arm. But I claim victory cause I had your patience to persevere ! Take care
Now you know where to search for things like that next time! I worked on one car for so many years that I eventually could listen and have a good guess where to start looking.
Yes children's are lightning fast, this is because bedtime is not for sleeping, but, for RECHARGING!! Great video like always.
Jeee old good Ray is back with his voice. Ray welcome back :)

@@SWHBOYCE So you miss silent voice video!
i miss " tow rtow ttow " sound phone. really miss him 😞
Great photography work. Having only changed pads on autos, I learned early on to ck the brake fluid reservoirs first and take some fluid out first. Compressing 4 pistons make a mess if you don't.
Nice to see you back with your regular enthusiasm!!!
Huh allredy thot that I travel back in time becouse there was intro to this video 2 days back 😂🤣
I’ve never actually done a pad swap sober. So that’s how I do it…😊 thanks Ray, you’re the best. Despite your horrid choice in (it’s not) coffee you’re a man I’d be proud to work with.
way back when, did a pad slap on my old 82 200SX. about 20mins including dragging the floor jack around the gravel driveway
I always would grease the new caliper shims to allow the calipers to slide in the channel, prevent it from hanging when brake pedal released.
I once pulled the center hubcap off my toyota celica wheels i did it wrong and broke one of the clips. A Firestone dealer said they would order a new one. I fessed up and told them I did it they didn't need to replace it. This is a 2 way street, customers need to be honest too, taking or asking for something to be fixed that you knew you did isnt honest it also gives the store a reason to charge more,
Replacement parts are not free. The shop has overhead to pay and makes a certain profit leval to meet these cost and earn a living. Honest mechanics deserve honest customers. Its a 2 way street. You benefit if they are around in 5 years.
Looks like a. nice truck. I’ve never driven a 1 ton Ram with a Cummins. Sounds decent in the cab and looks like it handles well too.
Have one they ride nice for a heavy duty truck
Yep 2018 up the gateway module is locked. Kind of a PITA you can get it through the back door if your patient enough
Yeah I had to purchase a FCA 12+8 "Dedicated" Connector in order to connect though their stupid gateway (Chrysler) in order to work on my Jeep. It was only about $30, but it just shows that even if you bring your vehicle to a competent mechanic, that the dealerships still want to force you to bring it to them...
Slight thread drift . . . The new (2023) Autel scanners advertise FCA gateway auth. compatible. Does that mean that the 12-8 cable you mention is no longer needed?
Aaah, went full DIY with floor Jack and Jack stands lol. Good job.
I have the same problem as you on a newer engine. I did everything and in the same order. Cleaning all of these including the throttle body helped. For yours all the guys replace the engine mounts as they are vacuum. Mine does not have those engine mounts but. 3 years on I still have the same problem. If you fix yours then I wish you well
Outstanding mechanic like watching your vids great job keep it up.
Hey Ray...almost 500.000 subscribers way to go..
Ray, thanks for all the videos, including the practical tips, explanations for why things work the way they do and the humor. You are a credit to your profession. I wish RUclips had been around 30 years ago when I started working on my cars, because your videos would have REALLY helped! Up in the "Great White North" (Wisconsin in my case) I always use the new brake pad shims, after wire wheeling and filing the rust off/out of the lands. I believe I heard somewhere that you lived up in the rust belt at one point, so you probably remember that rust usually jacks the old shims up against the pads and does a number on them. I also *do* put anti-sieze on the wheel studs and where the rim lands on the hub, so that I can remove the wheels without power tools if a situation warrants it. Things I'm sure you don't miss now that you're down in Florida.
Also, thanks for selling the brake compressing tool. I got one after seeing you use it and talk about it, and it does work well.
I love these movies where an old shop owner mechanic is working under a car with no jack stands and the vehicle falls on them and crushes them. Who writes that crap? A mechanic doesn't become an old mechanic doing those kind of things.
34:42 I think I’m in Love…with this dually Dodge!😊
Love my brake piston compression tool! Also bought the nifty magnetic flashlight.
Talking about kids being quick! My niece was 4 years old, standing by her grandpa talking to him and asking questions like always. She disappeared from being next to my dad to getting into his Mazda pickup (manual transmission) and drove the truck with a boat attached, through the wall of the garage!! Talk about my dad having a heart attack!!! He picked her up brought her into the house and told her parents to not let her outside again!!! She learned her lesson to not drive grandpa's truck!
Love the Dodge wheel simulators. Quite the touch that Dodge gives as an option. Couldn't have made it more cheaply if they tried.
They offer 20” fancy ones, but I’ve noticed everything is an option on dodge you basically start with the name plate for a somewhat reasonable price.
They are a very expensive piece of cheep plastic when you have to replace them. Park at the mall come out to find your hubcaps grew legs and disappeared.
Okay I think I missed something. What is the deal with "Scotty"?
Perhaps an underlying theme of ragging on various brands.
@@Lovesausage269 Those 20" fancy ones have a lower load rating since they're aluminum instead of steel. If you're wanting to utilize the maximum towing capacity of the truck, you need the steel wheels. That's why the fancy ones are options instead of standard.
Another debatable thing is pushing the pistons back without opening the bleed nipple, some say that it pushes dirt back into the master cylinder.
Well it’s our Monday here and thank you for an easy day, have a little head ache left over from the weekend. Tomorrow I’ll be ready for the heavy stuff.
Thanks for sharing. 👍🤕
so Heavy Duty application use flange nuts. you use oil to lube them and stud to help achieve clamping force when properly torqued. And most things like that will have torqe spec on the flang nut.
😂😂😂 ...wife unit when you called her boss...she fell in love with you all over...great video...much love from Ohio to you and your family❤❤❤
That is a great tool to press pistons to caliper compare to pliers an c clamps.
Most people don't understand that you don't put any kind of lube on wheel studs. I agree with you 100%! Causes less friction on the threads which causes more turns of the nut at the same torque which causes more wheel stud stretch and over stretching it. Do that enough times and you'll end up with broken wheel studs. Some things are designed to use lube and others are not. Always go by what the manufacturer recommends. Your a good technician Ray! If I lived near you I would bring my vehicles to you for service.
Great video ray!!! I really enjoyed it!
Due to the rust living in the northeast, I always used Neversieze on my lug nuts and never had an issue in 40 years.
I actually love loud noises but appreciate the warnings. “👂🏻” And holy jackstands Batman! I mean Rainman! I love this particular RAM truck vehicle.
Totally see where you're coming from with the "don't lube the studs" angle - but in parts of the world where they salt the roads like it's going out of fashion every winter, you can either grease/anti-seize the crap out of everything whilst you have it apart or bust a hernia/snap a bolt undoing it next time. I don't know of anyone who's broken a wheel bolt/stud from overtorquing because they lubed the threads
Specs could indicate "dry torque only".
@@21Piloteer Yep. BMW specs torque with lube. So, check specs!
ive also never had an issue loosening lugs due to rust/corrosion and i live in MN
He didn't say snap he said stretch the stud. There's nothing to argue about there
@@benjamins94to be fair he did also say it's a highly debatable topic... He's not wrong! I have no doubt of Ray's capabilities as a tech, but it's also hard to take comments about torque ratings too seriously when he also uses an impact gun to tighten caliper bolts (amongst other things)
Super professional
Morning soooo nice to hear the silent treatment is done with
Wheel speed sensor is probably the reason for the abs light, just like 99% of every dodge product
I noticed those inner wheel covers were loose soon as you slipped the prybar in to remove the center cap. They were toast before you started.
I was at Carquest/Advance Auto for 7 years. We didn't sell many of the Frontlines, but we never had any complaints.
Ray..... the gateway is behind the the area of the headlight switch. All you need is to unplug it and use a donggle adapter to your scan tool and it is like it is not there. 2018 sucks cause it's behind the radio. 2019 and up it's over by the headlight switch and pretty easy to unplug. Good luck.
Ray, watching you do the kind of jobs us FYI guys do never gets old.
what
What is a “FYI guy”? I don’t want to be an FYI guy. Sounds pompous.
not to be picky, shared knowledge and mentoring sounds better than FYI, Pompus FyI people tend to sound and act like Diva's
I think he meant "DIY".
I don't know...
you can press both pistons at once with a c clamp too
I pull a 17Klb camper with the 2017 ram and the exhaust brake works fantastic which definitely extends the brake maintenance life
I was often reminded by mechanics when it comes to engine brakes, brakes are cheaper than engines.
Good morning Ray
Good to see you enjoying the easy jobs , do you ever remove the brake reservoir lid before pushing pistons back as that's how we are told to do in UK
I was thinking the same thing
Given the age and mileage, plus the pad wear, you can break the brake reservoir lid loose to reduce pressure, but you don't have to, given that the level doesn't change.
In Chicago land you have to protect bolts, nuts and slider's after working on wheels I always put a blob of grease on the thread's after I tightened The nuts and to keep slider's free I ran 1 line of powdered graphite and a line of powdered Teflon and smeared it around . It saved some rotors after twice having the calipers seize up and score inside of rotors .
It's so relaxing to watch a brake job without air hammers and grinders and such... SMA is more like the brake jobs *I've* done!
Yes the voice is back. Glad you're back Rainman.
Now on ward.
I have been a green light jumper a few times. But only if the on coming driver appears to fallen asleep at the wheel.
I like the little trick of leaving one slide bolt in, if the room is there.
OOOOOOH your talking in this one other than Click,,,,, Good video Ray thank you
And yes sometimes those lights are on and sometimes they are not…. Sometimes a good bump turns them on sometimes they turn off, sometimes if I hit the brakes hard sitting still they go off sometimes not…..
Good morning Reyes another gorgeous day rejoice this is the way.
Good morning Ray. A big Dodge today. Please use a Jack stand as I like a whole Ray. Truck gravity. Full speed ahead Captain 🧑✈️. Have yourself a great day. 😃
Fastener manufacturers have dry and lubricated torque specs for each size and grade of fastener.
Good safety....all units accounted for!!! Good vid!
Like the officer in the black and white movie of "The Thing from Another World" said, "Shut the door!" Your office door so it doesn't get tapped. In the movie there is a blizzard going on.
William Shakespeare had an interesting insight on lawyers
I have tried all different kinds of brake parts lube over the years and im not sure one is actually better than the other,so Ive gone back to good old silglide and Mission brake parts lube!
Careful with these. Last time I did some brake repair on a 2019 3500, all four caliper's pistons crumbled in my hand as I took them off
Loved your riff on RAM.
Thanks, Ray. Been using anti-seize for a long time on the lug studs. Never did seem to do much. I’ll not be doing that anymore.
Yo RainDude. Though the discs look perfect, it is a good practice to check the thickness of the rotor at the outer diameter and at the hub. Reason being: the outer diameter wears more than the inner diameter. The result causes the caliper piston to cock at an angle when extended... could chow the bore of caliper. Still you would be my mechanic....FOR LIFE! That caliper compressor tool is BADASS!
This is a very controversial topic. I originally would never just change pads then have done many pad slaps (different bosses opinions). Personally I will always machine rotors where possible. Even if the rotor looks good when you machine them you soon find they aren't always as true as you would believe and yes typically the outer surface is more worn then the inner. Most people would struggle to accurately measured the wear on a rotor but whem machining it shows. Also I have found once bedded in machined/new rotors seem to have much better bite. I think it as like re-ringing an engine without honing the bores. Yes it works but it isn't functioning to its peak efficiency. Yes those piston pushing tools work very well and are well worth the money.
Adjust the torque for lubed studs Look it up on a bolt guide
Hi Ray and families just finished watching video excellent job on front pads and as always you and your families be safe 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Im 4 minutes in and I swear ive started watching this video already a few days ago. Wednesday night the group talk about replacing brake parts. I see no rust on the new parts. cleaned and lube the brake pins. Nice fat brake pads! 6.7
I always use a bar to put tires on when I use jack stands. Sometimes it’s easier sometimes it will cause more of a headache lol
right hand tire appears to have a balance issue - one of the outer lugs on the tire is smooth. sometimes a small easy victory improves the entire day.
Ray, RAM Owner here, you need an OBD Security gateway bypass cable, they're about $20 on Amazon, there's two designs, both work. All the post 2018 designed FCA cars require it, so it's a worthwhile investment, once you install it (it's plug and play), your scan tool will work as normal. Without it you just get generic ODB data, and no write access.
My two cents. On the issue of lubricating studs, torque spec is given for a brand new thread. When pitting and corrosion start making an appearance that changes the ability of the nut to torque down. I think that adding lubricant restores that torque ability. The other issue is on the jack stand, if you watch the hydraulic press Channel you will see where a 3-ton jack stand will take over 10 tons before it starts to fail.
Yeah, I bent a 2 ton acdelco floor jack and had to upgrade to a 10 ton bottle jack (only other jack I own ) while doing a rear brake job on my silverado 1500 .
The matching jack stands held everything in place just fine, just not the jack.
Since I watched you install these HD pads, my car is stopping better....
That is a neat trick pulling one caliper bolt then moving caliper over and up. Making to job quick and easy
Good morning!!
