Brian brings out the best in those around him. That's what makes him such a great champion. He pushes people to perform their best and then can motivate himself to perform even higher.
Keeping back angle the same until bar clears the knees, not lifting hips first, chest out with upper back locked in position are all key. One problem I had and most people have is getting the hamstrings loosened up enough to get into good position. This requires stretching 2 or 3 times a day and using squats to help get the hamstrings stretched out. When I first got into good form it felt like I could pull 100 lbs more than before.
Brian Shaw is a true badass of Strongman. I have never once seen him not willing to share knowledge or show an ego to anyone. He has trained with Bodybuilders to Crossfit, to Average dudes and he is as humble as can be. To me that is a sign of a true master!

Wooow. Brian's approach to building a technique, as well as Obie's breakdown of Brian's approach, is absolutely incredible. Such a dynamic approach for tayloring a custom made technique that fits the individuals own strengths and measurements. This is like head and shoulders above the best 'deadlfit tips' -videos I've seen so far.
I just started learning deadlifts around 3 months ago and I had issues the saem as you Obi with my hips and couldnt get down. My trainer told me to put a plate down and lift off of those now I am able to go off the ground and deadlifting 375. I'm glad to hear my trainer is saying the same advice as Brian!
I have no PhD in this matter and am no strongman, but from personal experience with 7+ years of lifting 4+ days a week, I find the same thing as Brian. If my mobility isn't QUITE there to get into proper form for a lift, I will make it easier on myself (ex. stacking the pads under the weights like he mentioned at 9:08), and work on extra mobility work; I often sub out a lifting day for a full mobility day. For me, I found this allowed me to strengthen my mobility, while getting used to the exact form I need in a deadlift or other exercise. As my mobility got stronger, I was able to lower those "cheats" until I had no extra help or anything. Sometimes, especially with mobility, I have found slowly working up to something is the best way to progress, rather than making it harder on yourself to force you into positions more quickly. Great video!
Much less chance of hurting yourself as well ... Damage can be permanent for the sake of not wanting to look "weak" for random strangers who are actually not paying any attention to you most of the time... Training for longevity over short term is much more important ...
If you struggle to get to the floor your problem is mobility mate. Slowly lowering the bar down on pads from session to session does nothing to fix that. You need to allow your thoracic spine to bed to how it suits you and change your deadlift stance. Carry on with added mobility and go and watch MST systems video debunking the bunch of nonsense said in this video

So true! Ever since I can remember, I’ve been told that my deadlift is not “correct.” Yet I always pulled more weight than those that used “correct” form. Definitely have to work with what you got.
The only problem with this Jonathan, lifting more weight doesn't necessarily mean you had better technique. The reason I say that is because a lot of time when weight gets too heavy you can generally finish the rep if you let your form break down
In my not so humble opinion this may be the best Strongman video I've ever seen. This is the kind of thing you and Brian can do that no one else can: camaraderie! Great advice Brian. Ego lifting with bad form is just a bad injury waiting to happen. Lifting less weight with correct form is where really strength is formed💪
This is why I love this sport. It is never about being better than the next guy, its about being better than your self yesterday. The contest are just a way of measuring your own progress. Most of these guys just want to see the best people compete and will help each other get better.
I've had that same problem as Oberst. Had to compromise upper back tension for the ability to reach the bar. Definitely gonna use Brian's advice and try using the mat.
Brian Shaw is truly a genuine good person. It’s good to see two guys of their strength help each other to get better instead of seeing who’s swinging the biggest “stick”. I love when you and B do videos together.
Brian Shaw is just a good man. He's a great strength athlete and if it's possible he's a better person. I would be honored to lift with Brian.
Personally really like these deadlift technique videos. I'm trying to get my deadlift mechanics figured out after having crap form for a few years. Thank you.
Love watching you Obie!
Two of the nicest guys in the strongman show...you guys are amazing athletes
4:26 I love hearing candid talk about the genius Kelly Starrett
I've had that same problem as Oberst. Had to compromise upper back tension for the ability to reach the bar. Definitely gonna use Brian's advice and try using the mat.
Brian Shaw is truly a genuine good person. It’s good to see two guys of their strength help each other to get better instead of seeing who’s swinging the biggest “stick”. In my life I’ve seen many big strong guys in the gym who are basically douches if someone asks for help.
These two guys are great ambassadors for the sport of strongman.
Watching for the second time. Easily the best deadlift video I’ve ever watched.
Fantastic advice B .... great work guys 👍
Amazing video! I love when these two get together. They are well spoken and they know so much. Keep up the great work. Go out and be great, also stay strong and pretty.
Brian and OB what a great video. Thanks 😊
Invaluable tips from Brian
Two of the nicest people I've watched on RUclips. Gentlemen in there sport and in life. Great video nearly made me want to train lol
Thank you both for doing this video. I learned things on this video that is going to make me better.
Damn. To see you guys competed for years and still learning is damn motivating.
