    Many mediums can be used for acrylic but I like to mix Flow improver & Slow Drying Medium Gel (the brand really doesn't matter, but I am using Windsor & Newton in this video.

    Marion,
    I'm 72 years old, and have been "creative" since my 20s, however because of circumstances in childhood, I didn't have very good self esteem, and was told that I did everything wrong. (so I bought into that theory), and have problems even to this day being able to finish my artwork, (or even get started) most of the time.
    I always BUY every type of paint (Acrylic, Oils, Watercolors, Pastels, and lots of Brushes, WC Papers, WC Blocks, Canvases, etc. but have a hard time getting myself started.
    One thing that has always held me back is that I wanted to "Blend & Shade" with paints, but didn't want to "wait" for Oils to dry!
    Thank you sooo much for Sharing this Blending technique, as I believe this will help me just "DO IT"!!! (Get Started)!!!
    Sincerely Ed

      If everything you did wrong, then you can call yourself an abstract artist. Forget about all that self-esteem stuff, if you like what you paint is all you need.

    I use a hair dryer to quicken the drying of my acrylic paints so I can do layers of washes or whatever painting I need to do over that layer. I love acrylics because they dry quickly.

    • @HoneeyBee3
      @HoneeyBee3 2 года назад +1

      I know this is old but hopefully you see my message because Im so intrigued by your comment. When you say "washes" are you painting thin watery layers almost like water colors? Or are you using a solvent or something like paint thinner to thin the paints?

    • @julienielsen3746
      @julienielsen3746 2 года назад +1

      @@HoneeyBee3 I usually just use water to thin my paints. Washes are acrylic paint thinned down with water ( or another acrylic medium that is more liquid) usually thinner like water colors. But, with acrylics even if it's thicker sometimes I use a hair dryer to quicken the dry time so I can paint over more layers or details that I want to do instead of waiting for it to dry. Acrylic dries faster than oils, but, still if I'm working on something I want to continue painting and not wait 10-15 minutes for it to dry. Also making sure it dries thoroughly makes sure the moisture of the next paint won't lift any of the paint from the dried layer.

    • @HoneeyBee3
      @HoneeyBee3 2 года назад

      @@julienielsen3746 I see, thank you!! I tried doing washes with water and sometimes the pigment doesnt fully adhere or lifts up when I paint another layer. I thought washing with water was impossible unless the cobsistency was a thicker texture, which of course limits the transparency. So I thought maybe I needed a flowing agent instead. But your explantion helped! Maybe my layers just aren't dry enough before another thin watery layer goes down, even though it feels dry to the touch even when I wait at least 15 to 20 minutes. So I will try the dryer technique! If that doesnt work, maybe I just need better acrylics! 😂

    • @julienielsen3746
      @julienielsen3746 2 года назад

      @@HoneeyBee3 I used to wait hours until I painted another layer before I found out that drying with a hair dryer sets the paint so it can be worked on. I've always used Liquitex or some better acrylics. So, I'm not sure if it's the quality. I would think it would work even with basic acrylic paints.

    Hi, thank you so much for this rip!
    I’m new to painting and have been so frustrated with the drying time of acrylics. I can’t seem to paint fast enough yet. I noticed you added the flow improver straight from the bottle. From the directions on my liquitex flow aid it says to mix it 20(water)/1(flow aid). So am I right in assuming you did not dilute your flow improver? Thanks in advance.

Am wanting to go out now and get those two mediums to mix. But, is it 60% thick to 40% thin? Also, will it work as well if you make it a 50-50 blend? Thanks for any advice you can give.

      Just paint fast, I can do any Bob Ross painting with acrylic and just water.
      The only thing I can't do with acrylic is thin layers. Like in portraits. It looks dull when you thin it, not enough pigment.
      Oils layer nicely and show a depth of color that I can't get with acrylic.
      Acrylics are not as fine as oil.
      The layers look rougher.some colors are too opaque and don't show the colors underneath, never looks as nice as oil.
      I don't do oil cause I know artist that died from oil painting, cancer.

      +Karen Clark Hi Karen - it buys you a little bit more time - but you still need to work quickly with acrylics. It also depends on how thickly you apply the paste. if you feel it getting a bit sticky add a touch of water to keep it open a little longer. hope this helps. just play around till you learn the "feel" of the paste - sticky and pulling you either add a touch of water OR you dry off with hairdryer then re-paste the area.

      I have to mix the one colour I need, slap it on quickly and maybe have a couple of minutes after that and then the paint on the pallet is bone dry and the paint on the brush has started to turn to clay inside the strands of the brush.

There's a lovely restaurant (Finnegans in Ban Chang) a mile away that shows four or five of my paintings and I've discovered that the military theme gets lots of attention due to many ex commandos, paras, SAS, SBS and US Marines & Rangers. They're a brilliant bunch many in their 50's 60's & 70's Maybe you'd like to have a quick look - WWW.100Temptations.com

    how much longer does it extend the drying time?

    • @MazArtStudio
      @MazArtStudio  5 лет назад +1

      It really depends so its hard to give exacts - depends on thickness of paint etc. BUT it definitely helps slow things down enough so you can get soft blends. You do need to be quicker with acrylic but this does help :-) practise and play around see what you think :-)

    Do you only use the linseed oil for oil paintings? Not for acrylic paintings?

      Theresa Perdue it’s about that much but go off the feel. You are looking for a fluid gel consistency.

    Do you have a technique for glazing acrylic paint that will show depth of layers of. Color similar to oil paint glazing?
    My acrylic glazing with water ,not as fine like oil paint.
    Also when ghosting a color over a opaque color it's not as fine as oil paints, such as space scenes or for lights.
    I'm not getting the results of oil paints or airbrushing, both of which are bad for your health.

    • @MazArtStudio
      @MazArtStudio  2 года назад

      Use an acrylic glazing medium rather than water to thin down your paint.

    When you use a mop brush for blending ...do you just leave it on the side till you need it again in perhaps an hour? Doesn't the paint dry on it and turn it hard? But if you leave it in water you can't softly blend properly with a wet brush. I can't work out what to do!! 🤣

    • @MazArtStudio
      @MazArtStudio  5 лет назад +1

      I dip the tips into the water and then fluff back up in a clean paper towel. If you use a mop properly then the tips only should get dirty - clean as I have suggested and then it stays fluffed up till you need it again. You are right it will go hard if you leave acrylic on it so doing the above prevents that. BUT wetting it through is not great because it doesn't do much blending when it is too wet - just smears. I hope this helps

    The worst problem with acrylics is the change in hue as they dry because binder is white when is wet but becomes transparent when it dries.

    This recipe is against Liquitex's recommendation of using a flow aid - you're not supposed to use more than 25% of the additive or it'll compromise the acrylic painting.
