    Rob, the bed lights took all of ten minutes to install, that includes the time to open and drink part of a beer. Pop open the side panels, throw them away, or into the extra Taco parts box, plug the lights into the harness and pop the lights in. Done, looks great and works great. The tailgate lock was a little more time consuming but again, no big hassle. I agree that the lift should be installed professionally unless you have a two post lift or put it on jackstands. Not too difficult if you’ve done some lift work before and have the tools. Besides, part of the fun of owning a Tacoma, or Jeep for that matter is the ability to tinker with it. Remember, the stock vehicle is the canvas where you get to paint your own picture. You mess it up, fix it and try again.

    Nuts. The bed lights are ten minutes, and the aftermarket LEDs are better than OEM.

    Great video as always my friend . I’m a retired transportation mechanic, I purchased the 2023 Tacoma within the first month of owning it, I installed the front grill with Raptor lights (of course 😂), Bilstein 5100 shocks all around, the fronts adjusted at 2” height and a 1” rear block, side steps, bed cover, front and rear door Kenwood speakers and Kicker front tweeters, the pop & lock tailgate lock, Lasfit dual color low beam and fog lights LED, also Lasfit LED high beams, Meso customs tail lights harness, Meso customs dual color interior lights, and last the sequential mirror signal lights. Oh and a pedal commander that I received as a gift from my nephew.

    $30 and 20 minutes and they really light up the bed.

    Items like the bed lights and tailgate lock are things you can use as part of the price negotiations when you buy your Tacoma. I couldn't get my 2020 AG Pro lower than MSRP - most dealers were adding an upcharge of up to $5k - but I was able to negotiate about $1700 in accessories that the dealership threw in for free - bed lights and tailgate lock were among them.

    2020 and 2021 bed lights are plug and play. The blanking plates pop out; the truck is pre-wired for the LED bed light wiring to plug in at the tail light connection. Then the bed lights will work with the bed light switch on the dash. It’s less than a 30 minute job to put in aftermarket LED lights that are an exact fit and cost $26. The SET port charge to install the Toyota part is $309. The tailgate auto lock is a bit more involved, but is also plug-and play. The mounting bracket for the actuator is already part of the tailgate stamping, and the wiring plugs into the loom under the dash. Getting the wiring from the tailgate to the dash is the tricky part. Get the genuine Toyota part, a bit more robust than the Pop ‘N Lock - about the same price, at $169. Install is about two hours. SET port charge is $359, which is not bad, if you aren’t the DIY type. I had my dealer install it, as they offered to put it in and also install the running boards I ordered for roughly two hour’s labor charge, total. ($285)

    Can't speak to the lift, but the bed lights and tailgate lock are easy plug and play. Dealer wanted $469 to install tailgate lock...I ordered OEM Toyota kit for $136, I took my time and it took about an hour (there is a great step by step video on RUclips). They wanted about $170 for the bed lights...as others have said, they are available for $60 - $70, and take about 20 minutes. I do agree on the lights and lock...definite must haves!

    This depends on the model. 2020+ Tacomas are ready to add the bed lights and doesn't take all that long to do. The OEM Tail Gate lock is also rather easy to do. The parts are cheaper to get rather than having to pay the dealership premium for the install. I guess it really falls down to individual perception of value.

    Definitely would pay someone to do a lift. The tailgate lock I did myself on the SR5. I was able to get it done in an hour or 2. The instructions are good. Except written for the TRD that has the bed outlet. The instructions in the Toyota kit tell you to zip tie it to the wire loom running on the passenger side but on SR and SR5 that wire isn't there. You just have to route it to the upper inside of the frame rail and tie it up to that all the way up to where it goes in the cab. Not as easy as following a path they already made but it can be done.

    • @johnfrazier7034

      I agree with you on the Lock. The dealership wanted over $200+ to purchase and another $200+ to install. That is over $400+. I found a dealership in South Carolina that had the lock for less than $150 shipped... and I installed it myself.

    Speaking of lifts, I did manage to find someone , who does have the knowledge in doing so, however, there was one thing that changed the dynamics becasue I went ahead and installed a aftermarket headlights and came back not working correctly. Granted , I should have taken it back and had them fix the problem and when I did take it back this mechanic didn't want to touch the headache so I took it upon myself to put the stock lights back on with new LED bulbs.
    Speaking of dealership, I am going to have to take it in, becasue the heavy rain we are getting here, I found out my rear seat belt panel is leaking rain coming in, unfortunately that area has a air back sign , so within the next few week i am going to have to take it in and see where the leak is and have them fix it, which irritates me. I wasn't expecting this being that I did purchase this truck used . good to see things going well, Hope all is well in your neck of the woods.

    Rob, I did an Icon stage 2 suspension upgrade myself. No special tools required. But does take mechanical aptitude and post upgrade alignment. Most folks don’t necessarily understand the difference between a “lift” and suspension upgrade with lift included. I also bought an OEM pro grill for less than $200 from the dealer and an after market garnish for $30. Absolutely no issues with the TSS. Too much over-estimating the sophistication of this technology. Put the money in the quality components, not the dealership pockets. Same with the tailgate pop lock - super easy upgrade with very little time and effort. My two cents for your fans to consider.

    I disagree. From all the posts I've read, everyone has said aftermarket gets a better quality and better value. On '20 and newer, the bed lights are around $60 on eBay from a Toyota dealer. They are pre-wired, pull taillights, plug n play. Simple 10 minute install. Tailgate lock actuator is about 2 hours. Buy the factory harness (long or short bed version specific) fir around $130. It's also plug n play simple install. No need to lift truck if 4x4. Throw a large piece of cardboard to lay on. Another very simple install. Perhaps on the older trucks it might be more complex if wiring is required. Plug n play plus minimal time. $200 vs $600+. Same with predator bars - online OEM dealer at under $500 new or FB Marketplace pulled new because the buyer didn't like them, at $150-350. This and 20 min vs $690 to have the dealer install. Most people would love to make $340 (+tax) for 20 min work.

      Sounds like a lot of searching and a lot of combined time to me. Additionally, when added during the build, there is no additional labor cost from the dealer so the savings you mentioned is nil.

  • @1twotour
    @1twotour 2 года назад

    Rob, I love your videos but TRD Lift kit can be installed yourself and its pretty simple to do with just basic tools. I am not even a mechanic. The TSS I did have to have the dealership recalibrate which cost me $200. So installing it myself saved me approximately $3600. The bedlights are plug and play. The wiring is already there and everything. Just have to remove the tail light to access the wiring harness.

    • @RobMotive
      @RobMotive  2 года назад

      I’m surprised you didn’t take care of the sensor yourself. All that’s required to recalibrate is a couple of spacers (washers) behind the sensor to adjust the angle.

Well, not without mutilating the trunk and I doubt Toyota will warranty that. The tailgate lock and lights are two very easy mods. Both kits come with everything needed such as wire and connectors.
