I used to watch Kurt play at the University of Northern Iowa. I also think the Broncos drafted a uniquely talented QB. I love Kurt’s explanation of these plays. I would really like to hear 2 qbs discuss these plays, I think that hearing 2 perspectives would really be fun from a fans perspective.
I love to point out the literal pancake block by Courtland Sutton on the "choice" play where Nix ran left for 10. Sutton gifted Nix at least 5 more yards, being aware and blocking quickly and thoroughly. Pancake for breakfast, eat it up!
As a Broncos fan, I thought this analysis was more than fair. You said that Bo Nix did good, praised what he did well, and sometimes pointed out something that he could have done better. I think several other Broncos fans in this chat took your 'criticisms' way too personally. Most of the 'criticisms', such as the hank play, were much more critiques of the play design than of Bo himself, but you wouldn't have been able to tell from the way that most Broncos fans in this comment section reacted to your analysis. I think Bo Nix has already been playing very well, and, after seeing this analysis, think that he will only get better with time.
It’s cool seeing people analyze broncos QBs, and not be like “ you can’t even hit this simple hank, mesh or stick route” can’t wait to see how the playbook opens up since we never seemed to get out the basic section.
I wonder if Bo is going for the quick throws because of what happened with Russel Wilson holding the ball too long. That appeared to drive coach Payton crazy last year. Being pre-season and he is a rookie, it is good that he is making the safe throws early on. As he gains more experience, I would like to see Kurt Warner break down a mid-season game. By the way, Kurt is one of my all time favorite qbs with an interesting story.
Washington Commanders fan here. I'm really excited to have Jayden Daniels here but with that being said I did ponder about if Washington decided to trade back the #2 overall draft pick and getting a big draft haul and ending up with a Bo Nix sorta QB. That could've been the best move overall but Daniels is a special talent and it's crazy to pass on it when your best QB is Marcus Mariota without Daniels being here, so I'm fine with that. But watching this film is making me just wonder, "what if "?
Yes, we all wonder these preseason days. Your Jayen Daniels is slated to be the real deal. Lots of us Bronco fans think Bo is akin to a John Elway. Not sure about that but I'm looking forward to see which of these three rookie QBs (add Jacoby Brissett to the mix) will surface as their fans so believe they will. Good luck on yours, we may need some luck here in Colorado/Bronco country.
Bo is leaving a ton of money on the table at the moment it's true >>> but the main things that give me great confidence in him as QB1 are: 1. First from PS1 to PS2 you saw him address his terrible footwork- so just him knowing he needs to work on that & then carry it into a game & make that happen is massive- so he is improving & working on his flaws not being complacent & having very fast success with that 2. He is not messing around back there- so maybe we live with him not going thru the entire progression window availability bcuz he gets the ball out & moves the chains- in the NFL it is not so great all the time to throw a bomb/chunk play bcuz you just hand the ball right back to the other Team too quickly & tire out your DEF- so a dude who goes on 10-15 play drives & gets points [6/7 drives in PS resulted in pts!] can really help the Team get the win- which is the main goal here! 3. His work ethic is 100%- when he was named starter & HC was smart to do that on the field before practice >>> first words were I have to work harder the standard is now higher > what exactly went wrong here... ? Seriously could his work since being drafted have been any better with a better outcome on the field?!!? Literally nothing went wrong & he is already a way better QB than russell wilson for this Team I love how he attacks the middle of the field- we so needed that... just wait bcuz I know the way he plays will set up big money plays & he will show what he has in that arm when he gets his feet under him & set >>> after a games worth of those long drives he will eventually draw the 2ndary in for support & then he kills them with a 1 on 1 outside So seriously there is a lot for him to improve on but for a rookie that demonstrates he is improving & working on improving & knowing he has to improve
I noticed that his footwork leaves much to be desired. He threw a few of his throws flat-footed. That probably drives Sean Payton nuts, but that's also why you practice. Do quarterbacks jump rope to improve their footwork?
hmm I guess I have never really thought of the order of the read's but that's really inciteful.. also this follows on how some QB's never seem to see the open guy..
After every snap, when Kurt paused it, I'd look to see if Bo had all day in the pocket or not (thanks to his offensive line). If he did, I knew there was an 80+% chance that it was about to be a complete pass. Then the other 20% would be QB runs or receivers dropping passes. I've been trying to promote the importance of a strong o-line lately and I hope that people start to appreciate it more when they see it.
Great breakdown, Kurt. As a broncos fan I have high hopes for Nix. Also, just a bit of advice: Invest in a better microphone. Your voice is rather muted.
He still got 10 points in 2 drives. The ultimate goal is points.. whether that is short throws or long throws.. but yes, he should hopefully grow into being more confident in throwing deeper passes
Kurt, as a former quarterback, in shotgun before the snap, do you prefer a right handed quarterback with their right or left foot in front of them or does it not really matter?
Eh. The 1st play Bo could have thrown the ball to the right side sideline to the receivers outside shoulder and there was enough separation let the receiver play the ball. But the 2nd play Kurt wants Bo to look deeper, then check down to the middle of the field? We’re nit picking. Both completed passes are also frequently complemented as finding a rhythm. Getting in a groove. Young quarterbacks start stretching and miss and they get talked about as doing too much. A lot of great quarterbacks have made a lot of yards off of great timing on routes and taking the yards the defense is giving you, and not trying for too much. Take the 5 yards, let the receiver work and get a couple of more yards. Take the guaranteed reception and let the receiver play. And now you’re in short yards for a first down.
I don't quite get the point. So a rookie who hasn't played in the NFL doesn't see the possibilities quite as well as guy with a decade of NFL experience looking at a freeze frame? Nix moves the chains, scores points, and keeps his defense off the field. I'll take that for his second exhibition game. He'll grow into recognizing the bigger potential plays.
Exactly. All I heard was "come on kid, even Peyton manning makes that read." Good Lord Kurt guarantee you'll be giving flowers all video to Caleb williams.
