I am not Native American; but I have listened to both sides of this issue as expressed by Native Americans. And I can give my opinion and will do so. The mascot to me (and I'm sure also to the teams who played under it) meant ferocity; bravery; a winning spirit against all odds; the war cry when the tribe had been attacked and had to wage war. Iron Eyes Cody expressed this well in the (serious part of) the film "Ernest Goes To Camp." And he did it in his native tongue while his Granddaughter (an actress in the film, but also a Native American) translated. In the end, it is up to Native Americans to make the call. My point is the logo mainly, not the name. How come the Redskins had to get rid of the logo, too? But yet, The Chicago Blackhawks, The Kansas City Chiefs, The Florida State Seminoles, Atlanta Braves all get to keep their logos without any complaints from anyone?
