ℹ️ About the episode:
We've talked many times about the pros and cons of traveling with and without reservations. The fact is, if you're traveling during the peak season, on the weekend, in highly popular places, reservations are essential or it becomes very frustrating to keep hearing "sorry, we're full". But if you're flexible and have a good PLAN B, there's a good chance you'll get into some of the most popular State Parks with same-day reservations. Do you remember the Grand Tetons episode when we stayed at Colter Bay State Park? We made those reservations the day before.

Little over a month ago, we binge watched every KYD episode to present in about 10 days. About 2 weeks ago we bought a new 24ft travel trailer (first time ever having any RV) and just got back from our first trip with it a couple hours ago (third time ever camping). Thanks to you guys we're exploring a whole new lifestyle and we're thrilled to start making changes so we can travel more.
On another note, camping in CA is a challenge right now with COVID and the Summer season. Most places are either booked out into September or completely closed. By chance my manager's boss just bought a trailer about the same time and talking to him found out he had been working remote from the campground for the race track at Leguna Seca (about 10 mins to Monterey). I never came across it online but its ran by the track and has great views of the hills (the campground area it at the top of a tall hill) and a couple minutes walk to the track. They're dog friendly so we showed up the next day and spent the weekend. It was a different kind of camping experience than we expected with hearing the track and all but it was a blast! I would definatley reccomend for a fun time and even now in August the campground was little more than half full (I think about 80 spots) with water and electric hookups.
THANK YOU GUYS FOR INSPIRING US!
Matt Maguire congrats. You will love it.
Matt Maguire, you're in my neck of the woods! I live a couple minutes from Laguna Seca :)
@@shawnmarie459 that is an awesome race track. It’s in the bucket list to drive.
There’s a shooting range there too :)
Your family is a success which is inspirational .. however the real deal is the love you have and give to each other and the community.
The sound of the waves at the end is really something to relax to. Charlie has the best life and he is such a trouper but when he’s done, he’s done takes a lot to wake him up. Loving the adventure and the whole KYD experience. Your Videos and your background musical choices are always Top Shelf Superb.
really professional.....
I couldn’t agree more
This is the ultimate Pure Michigan ad. We love our lakes.
Just like Minnesota! 👍 👏
Sharon Taylor looks like a beautiful area.
Oh and all the dams that fail. Love me that too along with insurance company's.
Yes indeed you should submit it to the people who handle the pure Michigan ad
@@mplsmaven9337 Sadly it seems like they just skipped over our MN. Was looking forward to what they'd get up to in Duluth and maybe get some ideas.
Mark: "Okay...ready to get to work?"
Trish:
Priceless!
We love you guys!
Mark's lucky he didnt get hit with that broom😂
We laughed out loud when she looked up. Hey, you mentioned Duluth. I grew up 1 1/2 hours north west of Duluth. We would be in Duluth many times. Jay Cook state park is great. Duluth is the farthest inland sea port. Ships can go all the way to the Atlantic. QSO you probably saw all the ore boats where we whipped our iron ore to the steel mills down around Chicago.
That campsite was sooo tight! Great job and Trish was very encouraging. My husband wishes I could communicate this well!! Officially impressed!!
You were a champ letting someone else back your beautiful rig on the boat! Charlie did great. And squeezing into that sight was amazing!! That beach and the sound of the waves was amazing.
Not sure what it was about this video, but it is one my favorites yet. Thank you for letting us be part of your journey.
By far, the best line...never going thru Chicago again....
What cell company do you use.
Agreed! We currently live just a little north of Chicago and I hate when we go East or south because we have to drive through there,
Good advice to anyone coming through the area. Fuel up before you hit Chicago which ever side you start out on. Its not called ChytCago for nothing!
there was a disclaimer right.. "not towing an Rv", I went to school there and refused to drive back in "77, lol!
If you’re going thru Chicago stay off of I94 and take I294 tollway it will cost you a couple of bucks but it is less congested
I found KYD right after the Mt. Rushmore episode in season 1 and have been following ever since. Thanks so much for taking us along on your journey!
Just found them 20 minutes ago. How much longer are we on mandatory stay at home orders?
Warms my heart to see you guys in my home state enjoying our great lakes and all we have to offer to the RVing community, Michigan is a jewel to be discovered.
Lived in Michigan all 65 years of my life. So much to do
I’ve been watching your videos for about a month now an I finally subscribed to your channel lol my wife an I started camping with a tent, then 2 years ago we ended up buying a popup an now that we have a 2 year old an we bought our first 17ft hybrid an we love it! The more I watch your videos it makes me want to travel an see the world ( an get an huge rig) when the time comes, so keep up the amazing work on all your videos an thanks for your tips along the way it has helped me out 👍
Wow so many awesome sights jammed into 36:27 and that final sunset--Stunning!!
The travel videos are very good at making the community feel like were there. I love all of the KYD adventures and new ones to come!
Nice. Thanks Andrew. This one should do that. We made it a bit longer to include more of the convos along the way.
@@KeepYourDaydream I'm definitely loving the longer videos that have been coming it.
Yes! I've been waiting all day for this. Got up at 5 am went to work my 12 hour shift and now I'm home. I'm so ready for this!
I love the rainx 2 in one, makes seeing in the rain so much better.
madcrafts agree
I added a Camco step rug to my automatic running board. It allows my two dogs to get a better grip when entering my Expedition. Charlie might like.
The EDITING is Outstanding. Learning a lot!
Richard DeAgazio can’t agree more.
We just left Mears last week and it was absolutely our favorite of the four MI state parks we visited! So beautiful and people there were so chill. Seeing your video makes me want to go back... like now!
I’m going to sell everything I own to RV. I don’t have much right now so it should be easy. Then I can live and work as a digital nomad! Super inspired by KYD!!!
They are great. But they have other flows of income that make it possible for them to live this lifestyle
@Tina Columbia, I would say it's a realistic enough view. They show the problems and the positives.
I'd rather live as a real human nomad, than a digital one ;)
I think the last digital nomad job was taken months ago. You'll have to wait for one of them to expire... Then, and only then, you'll get your 15 minutes of Fame
Be careful. The form and function of RVs are not for everyone. Might I suggest borrowing/renting an RV for some small local trips to get the feel of the small spaces/storage and the necessity of thinking about things that are taken for granted in a regular home...like poo disposal, water usage, power availability, and RV/RVER discrimination/handicaps. I full time harvest host, boondock, etc, and have found that you have to constantly work out tons of things and also work around tons of rules/restrictions/social norms. It’s worth it for me because of my wanderlust spirit. But its hard sometimes.
Ok if I may, Rainex..... first clean your window throughly with “double 00 “ steel wool. (Really”) use it dry, don’t use any water or glass cleaner of any kind. It will NOT scratch your glass. Then squirt your rainex on and let sit for a min then buff off with a clean dry cloth. I only do mine once every two years however we don’t travel as much as you folks so maybe do your annually. It is amazing how it repels the rain. Very important to really clean you glass first tho. P.S. love your channel, we used a lot of your pointers travelling in our M/H to Alaska in 2019. Safe travels KYD
Ooooh thanks, I’m going to do that !!!
Yeah, I'm not rubbing steel wool on my windshield, ever.
Use the green Rain X fluid in the summer, the orange one streaks. Also use your windshield washer a few times before it rains to build up some product on the windshield.
That sunset alone made the journey with it! I'm totally sold and I'm all in! Great work guys!
The Treager temp issue is the wood pellets absorbing moisture. We have a Grilla brand pellet smoker. When I first purchased it, I purchased every pellet blend that looked interesting, so all of them. After a while I couldn’t get ours to maintain temp. I now use one or two blends at a time. You can dry the pellets out in a 275 degree oven using a deep disposable aluminum pan. Thank you for the videos.
That had to hurt your heart watching someone else back in your truck and trailer....AND, with your baby boy inside all by himself 💔.
Great video once again! Thanks for taking us along 😊
Wow! I don’t know whether I was a bit prejudiced or not ( lived in Muskegon for 42 years ... now Zeeland Mi) but this was my favorite episode ever! The music, the scenery, the USS Badger!! Pure Michigan, my true north! Thank you
We are in Zeeland as well!
“...Titanic. And everybody knows the history..” 🤣🤣
RainX: just run the washer when you start out in the morning (don’t wait for rain) and you’ll see it work if/when it rains.
Yup... my understanding is was developed for or by USAF. I began using many years ago when it was new, I think. Almost magical with bugs, ice/snow when applied correctly but if bottle freezes toss it out
We love your videos! The wife and I are currently stuck in Thailand due to the China Virus and are just waiting to come home! We have purchased a truck and a 5th wheel , both older but hey you got to start some where. We have played around with the idea of just living in the camper full time. After a few days of watching your videos we have decided to just go on the road. I am a programmer / developer so I just need internet to work. We have a 4 year old daughter and think wow what a life for her! But thank you so much, your videos have helped us decide what to do once we are back. Some of the places you guys sit to do your videos, I will be able to just sit with my laptop and program away, truly amazing! Thank you so much for all the info you provide!
As the ferry is leaving the dock you can see on the right the USN Cobia. A WW2 sub that my uncle served on. Was blessed to be with him for reunions with crew members. Sadly I think on 2 crewmen are still alive.
When using a smoker you should always leave the lid open until the smoke subsides and the temperature starts to read on your display panel. Then you are good to close the lid and bring it to the desired temp and add whatever your're smoking! Love watching your adventures
Should really make a KYD playlist on Spotify of the music you use
Thank you for showing the multiple attempts getting into that tricky spot! I know if I had to park there I would've taken 10x as long but it shows that even with experience you still need to take your time and get it right.
Makes me want to go back up to Michigan and visit family. Thanks for sharing the adventure. It's so cool to see you having fun and just taking everything in stride. Caleb is sure right about the Titanic and there are a lot of ships at the bottom of Lake Michigan. Thanks again for the great videos, I look forward to them every Sunday.
The outdoor shower was one of our first mods on our travel trailer. We put in a quick release faucet and then we bought a quick release hose and store it elsewhere. That was a great mod to save having a water leak. Love the ferry. Thanks for sharing your journey!
We are totally adding Mears state park to our list for next summer. Thanks for the full insight on taking the ferry and backing into a tight spot at the park. Loved it all!
You’re my new binge. I wish I had watched this show when you produced this. I was watching Chateaux in France, during lockdown, over all of that!!
You were literally 40 minutes away from my cottage which is a homeowner’s association community comprised of houses and RV’s on the lakes, in the woods, on the Airpark. Houses and RV’s all living together in harmony.
I’m glad you enjoyed picking blueberries.
We loved this episode! I love these casual day in the life type videos. The Charlie time lapse at the harvest host was so cute! I love Charlie and love seeing him in the videos so much! So funny at the end 😂😂 awesome 👏🏻
In these crazy uncertain times it’s nice to see the kindness and hospitality of strangers is still alive and well
** will never stay at Mears again - not worth the hassle .. WAY TOOOOOOO TIIIIIIGHT!!!!!!!!! Luckily I had a corner site July 4th (literally just that night as we were headed North). Took a pic of how TIGHT just leaving the next morning was - cars/trucks and campers inches from the white line!!!
I camped there every year when I was young, mannny years ago. If you had a travel trailer or a very small motor home you were the rich. Tents and pop-up or truck camper was the majority. I have been back a couple years ago and the park has not changed and I would not think of going in during peak season With my travel trailer.
I think its well worth it. I love that place.
@@mattsmith9270 you are so right. I made plans when school back. Hoping the trees have started to turn. I am limited to which sites I can get into. The back loop I can back into.
@@jgriff3218 We always stay in the back loop if we can. If you've been there enough you learn sometimes you have to go the wrong way to get in the spot easier and quicker as to not block traffic as long.
Thanks guys. I love just winging campsites with my family on the way to the destination, i feel like you find the best spots by accident. Also you guys have such great kids. Its a privilege to see them grow up.
Beautiful! Duluth is warm to my heart as well ! Great Historic Mansion there too. I lost my Wallet swimming in Lake superior and then my own brother found it by mistake walking in from his swim !
Did your brother find it that day or another day? The mansion is the Glensheen Mansion or Congdon Estate. Se used to practically learn about it in History Class in the 70s. Partly because of the murder mystery. Minnesota, even Minneapolis was small back then.
My family has a cottage in Pentwater! I spent summers growing up going to Mears State Park to swim. The sunsets are unreal. So happy you got to experience the area!
That Comet was out of this world 😂
We camp here every summer...it’s the best place to watch “Back-up RV TV” 🤣
I have always wanted to take the ferry accross. Next time you’ll have to have a charlie cam in the camper. Lol
For the Traeger problem. Have you been using the same bag of pellets? If so try a new bag. If the pellets are old or any kind of moisture at all they will not burn properly.
I love it. Most adorable couple on the planet ❤️. We’re looking at Lance campers for our truck. Getting ready to haul the pontoon and do a bit of explorin’. Nature is my Happy Place.
Lance is a good brand. I've never met a Lance owner that didn't talk well about their rig.
Love your videos and as a new RV owner, I've been binging on RUclips videos to learn all that I can about the adventures ahead of me and your channel has been a big help. But, today I learned something totally unrelated as I fell in love with your final soundtrack (This is Our Time - Cassette Deck) and have added it to my favorites playlist! See? Your videos are informational as well as entertaining in ways you may have never thought about! Safe travels and thanks again.
Makes me want to go stay at Harvest Host!
I'd go nuts watching someone else back the truck/trailer.
Classic: Tricia is sweeping. Marc: "Okay, let's get to work!" Tricia: Stare of doom.
My favorite scene: Trish and Carson (I hope I've got that right!) walking side by side on the beach at sunset! Beautiful! Both the sunset and the mother-son moment! Another great vid! Thanks!
The Harvest Host site was fantastic, and any scene with Super Chill Charlie is always a winner! I'd have bitten my nails to the quick having someone else put the rig on the ferry and probably would have had to sneak in to stay with my dogs if that had been me. (Love the music as always!)
"Making a bee line" is one of the sayings I warmly remember my Grandmother using when getting somewhere quickly is the goal. Another favorite is "in and out like dogs at a fair" usually used when referring to kids running about. I envision the origins of it are rooted in an old timey fair with a simple ribbon barrier to discern paying customers from non-paying customers. Dogs don't pay, they go right under.
We spent a week in Duluth and loved it. There is a glass blowing shop called lake superior art glass and they have instructional classes. We made a dozen Christmas tree icicles. Amazing experience.
Dod you stop at Glensheen Mansion? Must see for anyone headed that way. Glam and Glitz of the 20s with a murder mystery to boot!
Im going to check out the Lake Superior Art Glass Next time I go up there.
@@mplsmaven9337 No we didnt. We live in Asheville so the Biltmore has spoiled us. LOL
The best Cranes in the world used to come from Manitowoc. Love the S.S. Badger 102 coats of paint holding the welds together. A night crossing is awesome. Glad you are all safe and healthy.
Lol Mark, that was the best view of a comet I've ever seen! You did an amazing job capturing it. 😂😂😂😂😂
Great video! Loved how you included the three attempts at backing up-we've all been in this type of situation where we feel like everyone's looking 😋
Pentwater and Charles Mears is my favorite place! We go every year. Hill and hollow is where we stay, it's up the road.
This was one of your best videos!!! Loved seeing the Ferry experience, the Harvest Host location, the State Park looked awesome and we LOVED the music selection. WELL DONE!!!
Awesome we took the Badger across on our Great Lakes Motorcycle tour, in July it was freezing!! Memorable trip!
Well, this is a Super Episode!
I don’t even know where to begin, so I won’t.
We’ve been RVing for years, but, we can’t wait to get out there on a big, grand trip.
Inspiration Overload
Oh no come on, you left out such a vital piece of ‘Titanic’ information that Caleb was about to say! 😉😂LoL
that's the one that ends up sinking, right?
:-/
Yeah, best to leave that part out; we don't want to end up freaking the patrons (who don't know the story/fate of the Titanic) out now, do we? Hahaha!
TiaH how does one not know? Has it been that long since James Cameron’s version? But then I knew it sunk when I was 10. And no, despite what my kids would say, I was not there. By about 55 years or more (mental math is not a strong suit).
One of the things I have always loved about your videos is the photography and once again you did not disappoint. Loved the comet footage.
P.S. I was sweating with you watching Marc pull into that site😊
We need a “LOVE IT!!!” button. 💖💖💖
This is hands down the best family RVing channel on RUclips. I'm late to the party, but so glad I found it. Beautifully recorded and editing is spot on. Great music by the way.
Welcome!
Welcome back to Michigan! ☀️🏖🏕
I have had a Treager for years, and worked out the bugs. You need to start by opening the lid leave it open, then turn on smoke and in 1-4 mins you will see white smoke (it can get smoky be patient), when the white smoke will clear , you will hear the hopper has ignited, c;lose the lid and set temperature to pre heat of what you want to cook. I have tuned mine off and started over and found it was my error not the smokers, be patient once you figure it out you will love it. Love your channel it has inspired me to RV travel too.
I’ve never seen any difference in using the Rain-X washer fluid. If you want the Rain-X effect then definitely use the spray
The rain-X effect was much better when they first came out with the washer fluid. Back then they had a summer version and a winter version, and they both had a much more powerful Rain-X feel to them.
RT it does a great job if used with the actual treatment makes it last a lot longer
John Doris ahhhhhhhh
I love hearing how the two of you talk to each other while backing up the RV. My wife and I traveled for 18 months and I don't think our conversations were ever quite that pleasant.
LOL
Always look forward to Sunday evening and each new KYD adventure! Trish, my better half wants to know about the hat you were wearing during the Red Trail Vineyard segment.
I’m new but enjoying every second! Working on retirement and you guys are fabulously helpful! I have a suggestion. Why don’t you make a KYD calendar of all the beautiful sunsets you have captured since you started traveling? It would be so gorgeous!! Stay safe and keep enjoying! I’m so excited d to get started!😆
You guys are the best. Love following your adventures. As soon as I can find my RV. Ill be living the dream. Thank you again.
Loved your journey. Love Charlie. I am 73 yo widow and love my 35’ class A. Happy, safe journeys to you and family.
Best trailer maneuvering award goes to team KYD🏆 ✌️❣️
Love all your videos! So professional! I miss having a smaller rig at times. We have a 36' 5er and I would not have been able to put it in that spot of yours in Michigan. Impressive! Safe travels.
I would love to park next to you guys while your here in Michigan. I'm addicted to following your travels
Susan Turner that definitely have some great followers
Well, not exactly binge watching, but enjoyed two videos. As a retired Sailor, the boat trip was a little nostalgic. Your video editing is fantastic and we loved the meteor! Nice touch! All the best in travels ahead. As we say in the Navy, "Fair winds and following seas!"
This is one of your best that I've seen, love this a lot.
I actually just watched it again for the 3rd time. To bad I can’t thumbs up 👍🏾 every time I’ve watched.
This was a wonderful video! I so look forward to seeing you all every Sunday night and you never disappoint me. Thank you for such great content. I am not traveling this summer so it is fun to watch your vlogs! I am from Indiana, and live in Washington, DC now and I really miss seeing all the upper mid west has t offer in the summer.
Awesome backing skill!! Impressed. I would be frustrated if I was in such a situation.
It’s amazing to watch you and your kids interact together. The commutation and ability to make your adventures as senseless as possible with the help of your boys is amazing to me. The smiles and laughs are contagious!!! My wife and I are extremely envious, and hooked on your channel. Wish we could do something like this, but I guess there’s nothing wrong with living vicariously through you tube lol.
Hello KYD family! Love watching your adventures! And that looks like a tight spot but great team work
My parents took us coast to coast in both Canada and the USA. My parents dreamed of eventually retiring and seeing every inch of North America. Unfortunately my mother passed 20 years ago this coming boxing day. Watching your videos is so bitter sweet for me because I love watching and yet I know my mom would have absolutely loved Harvest hosts. Everywhere we travelled we found little mom and pop restaurants and bakery's, farm stands, butcher shops, church dinners and if we were anywhere near a fishing town we'd buy from fishermen right off the dock. I hope someday soon my husband and I can buy our rig and my first night has to be at a harvest host. Thanks so much for sharing!
Just like Fight Club, you’re not supposed to talk about Pentwater... Sooo jealous you guys were there! We plan to retire in Traverse and visit family in Pentwater
Exactly!
Get a bottle of rainx, apply a generous amount, lightly spread it across the entire windshield with a cloth. Let it dry to a haze. Then buff off with a clean cloth until the windshield is clear. The rainx washer fluid will keep it pretty well reconditioned so you don't have to reapply as often.
First time driving thru rain over 35mph, it will look like marbles rolling off.
I absolutely love when you come to Michigan. And can tell you love it too. ❤😎🖐
I grew up in Pentwater, so it's very cool to see this video. After high school, I joined the Navy and spent 22 years in before retiring. I visit home about every two years and always go to that park...winter and summer.
We love West Michigan.
That ship is glued together with eight decades of paint....
There is some rust holding it together also 😉
That boat is how we moved to Wisconsin. Us 2 cats and a dog and the movers truck.
Just a little tip. Always peel the entire foil lid off of the bottle you are pouring into your vehicle whether it be washer fluid, oil ATF or anything else. Those foil flaps have a tendency to break off and end up inside the engine or washer tank and can cause huge problems. I know because it cost me a lot of money one time. Love the videos!
Great point.
Less Junk more journey just did a video about Mears state park. Sounds like your right in the same area.
That moment right around 8:00 where you pull into the Harvest Host and Trish is overjoyed at the luck. That's part of the magic of not making reservations, sometimes you accidentally find a gem. I remember a day where we had been driving for hours and couldn't find a hotel to stay in. Finally we come upon a B&B. All their rooms were full but it was so late, they let us stay in a private house with the most beautiful view, for the same price as a room. It was one of my favorite stays of the trip!
We had a saying in the British Army “ the three P’s” piss poor planning ensures piss poor performance. Love that mask Trish!!!!
It’s actually the 7 P’s: proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance.
@@martinfield7610 llll
piss poor planning provides piss poor performance, proper prior planning provides proven planned performance. Perfectly.
I had a 1SG that would bungle that phrase every single time calling them the 5 P's getting the rest right and all of my lower enlisted would always shake their head and look down to avoid laughing
Marc & Trish!! 🤙We are now KYD Insiders!!! Stay Safe and we love the KYD Family!
"We've already done the upper peninsula of Michigan" (implying we don't need to go there again) said noone ever!
We went to Washington Island for a month every summer during the late 70s to mid 80s.
Stationed there back in the day (K.I. Sawyer aka K.I. Siberia). Gorgeously short summers, it even snowed in August my first year, albeit lake effect snow.
Traiger tip, we have had the same thing in ours, empty the hopper, then run it on smoke until it stops smoking. The auger has pellets in it and the smoke selection feeds more in and you end up with spill over that starts a small fire in the bottom. We have found that we have to clear it all out about once a year. Always use the shut down selection and pull the drip pan out to make sure there is not ash build up every couple of uses.
Welcome back to Michigan!!
I really enjoyed watching this entire video. And your editing is absolutely marvelous. Your wife can really cook and if she's the one reading this you are a fantastic and seemingly healthy cook!
Watching from my own pop-up tonight, hoping to expand soon.
You do that everytime you open it up.
Living vicariously through your videos......4 years to hubby's retirement and we are hitting the road!!
4:17.... I've never seen a straighter line on a GPS ever!! LOL
So.....well.....done!!!
Don't let this go to your head, but I think I'd choose watching your videos over most of what's on TV!
We are not RVing just yet, and when we do, we'll probably be in a class A, but we have learned so darn much just watching and being entertained, not just the technical/practical sides of RVing, but the kind of people who you all are, how you handle life and your relationships, and your attitudes through the ups and downs. Thanks and keep up the good work!
