The world is big enough for multiple versions. Varnay's is unusual, dark, inward. What a sound! Spectacular intonation.

She sounds like a grandmother rather than a young Celtic princess. I think at this point, she was more of a mezzo than a soprano.

But she sings with a perfect open vocal technique and in full voice unlike some so-called "dramatic sopranos" today...

Not her role. This rendition is really wanting. Intonation problems; "scooping", constricted top notes really painful. Also, this is later in her career when, I believe, she had already assumed mezzo roles.
Her voice was too "big" and idiosyncratic for Isolde. But one of the greatest Brunhildes. Especially in Gotterdammerung.

Not true... I hear something different... I hear an Isolde with a grown and full mature voice... Certainly no intonation problems... I don't care about the scoops because what would we give to have voices like her's today... Isoldes of today have barely 10% of her vocal darkness, size and intonation security... both her high and low notes are absolutely fearless...
