  • In this 5 minute video we talk about obsessive compulsive disorder. We discuss symmetry or "just right" OCD and define obsessions and compulsions as well as how to know if obsessions or compulsions are normal or the sign of a disorder.

I just had an epitome moment. Back in middle school I stumbled upon a video on the topic of OCD and related to many of the symptoms, all but obsessive thoughts like “oh! If I don’t do this, my family will die!” So I put it off as my own problem. This really opened my eyes. Ever since I remember being able to walk, I’ve struggled with so many of these symptoms. I’ve always known it wasn’t normal, but this video helped me a lot to understand what it may be. Thank you.

I guess the best advice at least for me, my opinion, is just keeping busy. I do this thing called a "plot twist" i named it lol I know strange, but if I am trying to fight it when it starts getting really bad and i feel like i haveeee tooo dooo itt i just say "plot twist!!" And get the hell out of where i am and do something completely different, usually involving something to make me tired a little to get out energy, even walking, jumping jacks, dancing, hula hooping, gardening, if you wanna be lazy coloring, making cookies, call someone to talk. That's the advice i guess i can give for things to try instead of meds if you refuse to take them.
I was always embarrassed to bring this up to people because i didnt want them to think of me as "weird, strange, crazy, etc." When i mentioned it to my old school mother, she always wouldn't understand and think I wanted attention I guess. Than another person told me "me too,me too, me too" (turns out they didnt and always just agreed and said me too to almost everything i said lol) so for a while i thought it was normal and everyone did this and just didn't talk about it.
Sometimes it wouldn't be that bad, I believe stress would cause it to "flare up" is the best way I can describe it. Some days it wouldn't cross my mind but than randomly it would and everything had to be even and it would bother and bother and bother me. Than it started getting more random things that needed to be even too so my whole day at some points would consist of thinking it everything was even. Keeping busy helps alot because than if i am thinking about other things that little though wont pop up as much. Also meditation and trying to fight the urge. Which sometimes would be soo bad and almost painful trying to not do it. And it would mentally bother me because i would think about it for hours and hours afterwards . sleeping it off helps, if you are actually able to fall asleep with it bothering you.
I know some people have it really really bad and in grateful mine comes and goes, so i hope everyone going through this just know, you're not some kinda of weirdo, and it's ok. Most people who end up figuring it out or you tell truly don't even care and it doesn't even change the way the look or feel about you. And for the few people that it does, why would you even want them in your life anyways you know?
God bless hope it gets better for everyone going through this.🙏

Like in the comment about the crack on the sidewalk. I would try and try OVER AND OVER but I didn't want someone to think I was a crazy person so I sat there and let it be and it bothered me to the point were I would cry over it and have panic attacks.

I don't think I've related to a comment more. I remember one time when I was like 8 or 9 i was walking around a lake with my mom and I stepped on this rock. I went back to both correct how I stepped and then do it again but on my other foot and the other way. My mom got frustrated with me and she just grabbed me and dragged me away. I was screaming and crying trying to explain and make her go back. Now when I walk with people I've started avoiding cracks but sometimes I hit them and it's hard. I also will count my steps on each foot in each crack and repeat it on the following cracks. Moral of the story: I hate walking in public and around other people but I have to.

I also had a panic attack in the school hallway because I stepped on someone's shoe and couldn't obviously repeat it to make it feel right and I just felt stuck.

All the people who say they have it, please get diagnosed before you come to any conclusions. Thank you ❤

I get the feeling that counting and symmetry OCD are very similar. I have been diagnosed with both and the compulsions of the two often intertwine. I have to have an equal amount of steps per tile of sidewalk/flooring, and that number must be 1, 3, 5, 10, or any number above that ending in 5 or 0.

Probablemente tiene un tipo de OCD llamado Contaminación OCD. Él marcas tú Obsesionarse con cualquier cosa inmundo. (Mi primer idioma es el inglés, lo siento si cometí un error en algo)
