  • Have you heard of Tourettic OCD? Man, it's a tough one to describe. 😋 It can follow the classic cycle of OCD but it's different. Those who suffer with it often get stuck for minutes to hours completing a task or compulsion that is possibly tic like. Not because of an intrusive thought or even a perceived threat, but because of a premonitory urge.
Let's go through what "Tourettic OCD" looks like and how to do the treatment!
    😋😋Bloopers at the end! 😋😋

Until I step on one in the same spot on the other foot.. I almost broke my other hand when I broke my left. I damn well tried. Or the knuckle cracking. Joint cracking in general. I started at 5. Watching this video was like listening to someone else describing me! I was diagnosed with OCD at 10 (I'm 24 now) and it's incredibly rare to find someone who knows about/understands this form of OCD. Most mental health professionals assume I have tourettes or that I don't "realize" I have intrusive thoughts related to my compulsions. While I do have intrusive thoughts and did have some compulsions related to them when I was younger, the majority of my compulsions have always been the kind with the premonitory urge. Sometimes I realize what I'm doing, other times it happens without me even thinking. For me it's like someone's placing a weight on my body; I feel a type of pressure on my skin or in my muscles that don't have a tangible cause. Some of them look like tics to others (blinking, sucking my teeth, turning my head quickly, making noises, moving my ears, etc) and others look like normal compulsions. These are usually caused by needing things to be in fours and/or feelings of unevenness that I can physically feel in my body. Things like passing by signs, scrolling through social media, watching a video, stepping on cracks and lines/markings on the ground, and almost any other interaction with the world. These types usually result in me either doing motions (like waving my hand on one side of my face or stepping in a certain way) or flexing my muscles in the exact same spots that I did on the other side (I move one leg one way, I have to flex the exact same muscles in the other leg). I also do it with the ASL alphabet; I feel the urge to spell things out with my hands as I read or listen to someone speak or even as I think. Some of these compulsions can be easy to hide, but some aren't. I also had (and still have) hypersensitivity as a kid! Trying to describe these experiences to others can be incredibly difficult. You describe it so well and so accurately it's almost scary! I've seen and spoken to several mental health professionals about this and you're only the second I've seen that has heard of this; the other was my first psychiatrist who explained it as a "somatic" OCD. He actually had one other patient with it before he diagnosed me. Thank you so much for this video, it really made my day and makes me feel a bit less weird!

My tics and compulsions progressively change every so often (like I'll usually have one for a full year or so before it starts to fade out because it's getting replaced with a brand new, more important, more demanding compulsion), but one of the very first ones I vividly remember having that lasted for all of 6th and 7th grade was repeatedly, and sometimes even aggressively so, having to blink one, or sometimes even both of my eyes. It was so embarrassing having somebody notice cause i always got asked why i winked at them lmaoo

Every day I feel like I have to do this very specific ritual, throughout the day, especially when walking or reading. I have to move my fingers in a certain way, flip my toes up and down, and grind my teeth, to the rhythm of whatever song is stuck in my head (default is Yankee Doodle), sometimes while mentally sounding out a sentence I've just heard/read to that tune--and then I sound out the sentence (or sentence fragment) again, but pronouncing all the syllables differently, or lately just spelling out some of the letters so that it fits the tune. It can be soooo exhausting and no one seems to really get it. Idk my psychologist says it sounds like anxiety, but I've literally never met anyone else with such a specific and random ritual. I used to have to hum really specifically and that was awful because I could never hit the right note and make the feeling go away.

Most relatable comment and video ive ever seen. Every single Day i have reoccuring songs stuck in my head. Not even like a whole song but just a sentence or even a sound. I have had what is love baby dont hurt me no more and if you like pina colada and getting caught in the rain and the part in up town Girl where they dont even but just humm oooh ouuoh ooouh ooouh pop into my head atleast 10 times a day for Years. I often reallize that i have rhytms playing that fits for what im doing both in mood and tempo like banging a hammer to the rythm for example. I allmost Every Day have tics that makes me do specific Sounds but ive never had vocabular tics. But after my girlfriend once counted how many times i would Sing or say these specific phrases from songs for a whole Day that really made me wonder if this actually infact is a vocal tic. She counted 38 and i never even thought about the fact that i did it more than other people maybe would. Damn the devil for my tourettes and thank god for my girlfriends patience

@@sebastiannilsson9773 God bless you both! And me too haha I get the musical tics a LOT!! Funnily, just a regular old tip has helped me a lot with getting songs unstuck from my head. My band teacher in HS taught us that you can hum a short and very familiar song to get other songs out of your head; he recommended the Flintstones theme song, but I've found that anything that's familiar without being super catchy works great. I do the Flintstones and the Steven Universe theme songs and they normally do the trick! I love ticking to the beat tho haha, honestly music makes my tics sooooo much more bearable! Instead of twisting and yanking my body around or rolling my eyes painfully I just blink, walk, dance, and cook to the beat!

I was diagnosed ADHD at 38. I started stimulants for the first time right as I was entering a very stressful time in my career. I noticed my compulsion type tics worsened at that time, but was not sure if it was related to the stimulant or the stress. I have never heard of TOCD. I tried multiple times to find out what was going on, as I understood that they looked like tics, but were not involuntary. This describes my experience perfectly. I’ve experienced this since I was a child. They were always referred to as a “nervous tic” or “spasms”, but that never fully made sense to me. I had tried multiple SSRIs over the years for “anxiety” until receiving my ADHD diagnosis. They did not help me. My daughter experiences these as well. I’d love to be able to reduce my compulsions as I’ve developed a lot of pain in my neck and damaged a nerve near my scapula as a result.

I was diagnosed with TOCD and you nailed the feeling I have exactly, When I try and resist and urge it feels like the uncomfortable feeling that you get when your under water and you feel like you need to get out, like you can’t breathe and without the or else part, like you have to get out that’s it, it’s super uncomfortable, but when I don’t get anxious with the actual urge, but when I try to resist it for like even just 2 seconds I get super anxious and I feel like I can punch a wall in 😂 but yeah, you nailed the explanation well, I have tics but it’s more the urge of an tic, and when I do tic, I feel like I haven’t made it equal so like If my left hand bends I feel like my right hand missed out so I purposely tic on that hand with the urge, but cos I started left hand tic then right hand tic, Now I have to do it again, right hand tic then left, but sometimes it gets even worse because what I just done is like a chapter of a book so now cos I started with left then right and right then left I have to do the opposite right then left the left then right, and I have to do it, like I can not not do it, it’s the only when to make me less anxious or less pressure on me, it’s like a release of stress in a way, and the fabric you said, yes there’s a specific fabric that for some reason goes through me and makes my mouth go funny and triggers a tic, and also my friend thinks I have ADHD cos I’m hyperactive a lot of the time but I was not really diagnosed with this, any way thanks for explaining,

I have been diagnosed with just right OCD since 9th grade, but I think it may be TOCD due to my latest symptoms of tracing my eyes back and forth to a certain set of objects in a room or a certain group of objects in a tv show I’m watching as if I’m programmed to do it. Also I’m just like you with the blinking and elbow movements when I get bored or stressed. I take 90 mg Prozac to this day for ocd but I still have a little ocd but it’s now mostly the blinking and tapping objects along with the visual tracing of objects in 3’s and the need to “stretch” out my fingers until they feel right which I think is definitely a tic even though it gets rapidly worse under stress

I seriously can't believe I'm not the only one who feels this way. My doctor diagnosed me with OCD and I thought it fit because I do have obsessive thoughts, but my physical compulsions aren't directly linked to alleviating the fear from those obsessions, but rather the sensational pressures I feel within my body. My obsessions focus primarily on my body image, but my compulsions are completely at the whim of my sensory perception if that makes sense. Even while typing this I've had to erase a bunch of lines of letters that my fingers decided they needed to type. It's such a relief to know other people have these feelings too.

What about tics in reaction to stressful thoughts instead of physical feelings? When I have a stressful though, I could have a motor tic or mentally repeat random words again and again, recently I've even blurted the word out, all in response to a stressful thought because the tic blocks the stressful thought out, like it distracts from the thought. If I'm just going through a generally anxious time in my life I may just have more of these tics in general too. Is this tourettic ocd?

    • @kibblekibble5385
      @kibblekibble5385 3 года назад +9

I have exactly what you have just described too. For me I get a thought- which is usually a memory of an event and I feel intense shame, which triggers an “automatic” motor and verbal tic: either I shout a word/phrase, click, hit something..etc..The words come in phases so for a long time I may be “stuck” on a certain few phrases or movements until different ones develop. A lot of the time the tics are so quick that I’m unsure of what the original stressful thought/memory was, only that I felt shame and the only way to get the feeling out my body was to tic - which does relieve the feeling. It also gets extremely exhausting sometimes and holding them in in for instance social situations where I am around others is seriously draining.
Describing this is so difficult and hearing that you go through the same thing is reassuring. Thanks for your comment😊

Holy cow this helped put a way I feel into words. I've had intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors since I was a kid but I've never gone to get a diagnosis for anything aside for Generalized Anxiety disorder. It wasn't until recently did I start to wonder if I had OCD as well. I've had these feelings in my body where I feel the need to suddenly shrug my shoulders and jerk my head sideways. To do it makes me uncomfortable because it's sudden and quick but to not do it makes me even more uncomfortable. It reminds me of yawning cycles (as in: once I do it, I may trigger the urge to do it again and be locked into cycle that lasts roughly 10ish minutes). I've tried to explain it to my therapist because it usually happens when I'm trying to sleep but I haven't been able to communicate it well. I'll make sure to send him this video.

Thank you so much for making this! I was diagnosed with OCD at the age of 9 but we realised I had Tourettic OCD because I was always really confused with CBT as there was never any thought to work with and SSRIs didn't reduce the rituals, but an antipsychotic did. I am so happy to see some awareness on Tourettic OCD, it seems a lot more well known now than when I was younger which is great. For me personally, ERP did make me worse due to the suppression element, but then I had out of body sensations termed phantom tics which made it even more complex and I had the premonitory urge in my whole body like a massive pressure and it was unbearable and if I suppressed it then it would come out as extreme rage attacks, so I personally wouldn't reccomend suppression for severe cases, but for milder cases it may do something but I don't have experience with that thanks for making this video, you have a really informative channel!

I have always known I had some quirks as a kid that I found out a few years ago under "dermatillomania" as a form a self-harm. I was (and still am) hypersensitive as a kid most likely onset by a series of physical traumas between 2-7 years of age. My parents weren't knowledgeable or aware to get me the help I so desperately needed. This led to self medication with alcohol and drugs as well as other forms of self harm that I finally put myself into treatment for 2 years ago. Now I have finally been relieved of SOME symptoms such as lip biting and scalp scratching but am noticing other things that you described here as I explore the dosages under the care of my psychiatrist. I feel a sense of relief coming across this video and will mention this to my doctor for further evaluation. Thank youuu!

oh my god. thank you, thank you so much for this. thank you. My issue has always been shrugged off bc it doesn’t really affect my life too much but my weird little sensations have been confusing me for ages now. It was first pointed out to me in 10th grade biology, a girl loudly asked “why do you keep moving your fingers like that?!” it wasn’t embarrassing per se, but just frustrating bc I knew I did it but was often to in my head about this urge that I didn’t realize how odd it looked to others. This was a decade ago and I’ve still never had an explanation where every single second I was yelling “YES” “OMG THIS IS IT”. I’ve had other things come close but it felt like I was forcing it to be the case just to have a label or an explanation and that never helped. It’s never been intrusive, it’s just this sensation in my fingers, then extends to my arms to entire sides of my body, sometimes strange throat urges like clearing it many times or this odd chirp like sound my mom would point out to me as a child. It drives me insane sometimes but more so the not having any idea of what it was drove me more insane. this is so great. I’m going to talk to my therapist about this, I’ve never addressed it in therapy bc I’m too busy working on other issues that I didn’t want to distract from the direction we were going in for something that seemed a bit trivial. but since my major issue is panic disorder this really could help accompany the work I need to do.

My son was diagnosed Tourette's and OCD when he was in the 5th grade, he is now a grown man. This information would have been so great to have as this explains his evening tendencies and need to touch things. I wish I would have had this info to better help him.

I've been wondering for years what this was I was experiencing. I was diagnosed with OCD at a young age and am very familiar with it. However I started these random tics in my face a couple years ago, and this is exactly what this is, I feel these sensations and my body feels uncomfortable until I complete it. It's like this intense pressure, almost tingly. I feel like crying.. I finally found out that I am not crazy. Thank you so, so much.

This makes so much sense to me!! I’ve been doing this for as long as I remember. A lot of the time it’s not too distruptive, tapping one foot after I’ve tapped the other. If I don’t do it, I’ll feel on edge and very uncomfortable until I do it, and I find it nearly impossible to resist. However, it’s worse if I have a bruise on one hand and I feel the urge to bruise the other too and have to resist it, or I’m reading a book and I feel the urge to flip back to the start of the book using my other hand. The symmetry thing was so relatable to me, that’s exactly what I do. If I do something or touch something with one hand, I have to do it with the other, same with literally anything else. I’ve always thought it was possibly something ocd-related, but I didn’t have the anxiety part. Tysm for this, this made so much sense to me!!

I think I might have this!! I was diagnosed with Tourettes at 4 and I have been researching and I found out that a lot of my motor tics present differently than others. When I was younger, I explained my tics as feeling an intense urge to stretch a certain area and it was from a sensation. Even with eye rolling, before I was diagnosed, I would say that I was “Stretching my eye”. This is good information. Thank you!

I was diagnosed with it, and I was confused to why everybody else who had ocd, or when I’d see videos on it it’d be about things needing to be ordered, doing a compulsion otherwise something bad will happen, or otherwise just obsessions. But now I can really relate to this video, I wonder, how common is it though?

Holy shit this is gonna make me cry this is the most accurate video I've seen. An example of something I have is I'll be scrolling through Instagram with my thumb on my right hand. I only have been using my right thumb and then that finger gets uncomfortable or warm so I move to the other thumb but it doesn't help I can't do anything and sometimes it gets really bad

I knew I had this but didn't know what it was called! Knew it was feeling-based and not thought-based, didn't know what it encompassed. I have bodily-comfort tics but then also sometimes if something is the right size or shape my brain needs me to throw it... Like really far because my arms just get tired and stiff.
Also the texture thing is part of this??? Oh damn I love when things are finally explained

Ok Ik that you posted this two years ago so u probably won’t see this but I have been diagnosed with ocd since I was 7. Lately I’ve been hearing all the stuff with ocd about intrusive thoughts and compulsions to relieve anxiety and so I was invalidating my ocd bcs that’s not what I experience. Then I saw this and I was like “I THINK THIS IS WHAT I HAVE!!!” Thank you for this video. Because of u I’m gonna talk to my psychiatrist and see if my diagnosis is wrong. Tysm :)

WOW. this is the first time I've ever heard this explained. My therapists throughout the years have always mentioned ocd but I was never officially diagnosed for anything so I didn't think about it much.
I had a lot of tics when I was a child that were so exhausting. Then I felt that I grew out of them, or more like I was better at disgusting them and making them more subtle. But I still always had (and still have) these small movements I do every single hour of every day. Subconsciously, most of the time-I have gotten so used to them.
Sometimes I briefly tense-up and release my arms/legs/toes, touch objects a certain way when I place them down, touch things with the back of my hand, etc. AND THE PEN EXAMPLE!😂 When you did it I started giggling because I was lazy to click on this video at first but didn't expect how accurately it would describe me.
I haven't sought out treatment for these because I feel that these small motions are not a problem to me. I will take them any day over the tics I used to experience. However, the urges I get concerned about are those that are more risky or could be harmful: I have this one where I have to touch the lightbulb or surface of a hot desk lamp, baking pan, or curling iron. Also, once I start driving, I hope that I do not develop the urge to take my hands off the wheel for moments at a time.
Thank you so much for making this video! I'm going to watch a bunch more after this for sure!

this makes so much sense. when i was younger whenever i looked in one direction i had to look back slightly before i could move forward again and repeat it a lot sometimes, or same thing when i’d slide my finger across the wall, i’d need to slide back. i don’t do that anymore but now i scrunch my nose until it feels right, i never knew it was a thing

I‘ve been this way since I was a kid and I’ve never been able to explain it to a person who understood. When I get that overwhelming sensation to fix how i’m touching something I do it, and when the “pressure” of something out of reach isn’t right i jerk my head or touch my thumb to my pointer finger to ease it. I’ve been trying to research for years so I settled with “Just Right OCD” but it still didn’t seem exactly right. I came across this video tonight and bam you explained me exactly! I’ve always felt so alone with this, thank you!!

I have always wondered why some of my symptoms didn’t line up with common OCD symptoms. This pinpoints what I cannot explain myself. I didn’t know it was a type of OCD. Thank you!

Finally an explanation why I have to a but no real obsessions or compulsions that tie to one another it’s more physical. I’ve always had an issue with clothes and socks. The feel of certain fabrics and seams.

I have to say thank you! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. This video, listening to you, made me feel so......... normal. I’ve always been very aware of my tics/the urge to tic when I’m around people. Always trying to disguise the tics as something else. For example; I have some facial tics, and when ever I’m around people and I feel the urge, I’ll do the tic. But then cover it up, like I have something in my eye or something (so I you might be able to guess, I very often “have something in my eye”😂). But after seeing this video, I feel that it’s okay. It’s okay to address this issue, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. And just like you said, it’s not a thought or even anxiety that trigger the tics. It’s simply an urge. Usually the urge (the facial tics) is strongest for me, when I have to focus on something. If I have to sit still and pay attention or even just sit still and relax. It’s like I NEED to release some sort of pressure. Other tics are triggered by excitement and joy. I feel the urge to release that bubbling pressure. Even though it’s something positive that triggered it, it’s still there, and I need to release it. I’m definitely gonna try the techniques you talked about. Again, I can’t thank you enough. For the first time EVER, I felt understood. You just made my day!

this describes me so well i'm so glad there's a name for it. i havent been diagnosed with OCD but ever since i was a kid ive had different tics. right now its like, moving my hands a lot and making vocalizations, but its happened in so many different ways like clearing my throat, counting the steps i take etc. i feel like i have a mix of this and "regular" ocd, it happens the most when im excited or getting ready for something (which can be annoying) and when im tired.
