    Good to see you had fun.
    People in Mainz aren't shouting "Hello", it's "Helau", the special Fasnachts-greeting in Mainz. There are different carnival greetings in different cities, even Carnival Clubs in one city might have different "greetings".
    About the uniforms: They are mostly fake uniforms. Karneval, Fastnacht, Fasching is about making fun of the authorities, and mocking the military is especially prevalent in the Rhineland.
    Swabian-Alemannic Fasnacht in Baden-Württemberg is totally different, going back to Medieval and Baroque times (tip: go to Rottweil, Villingen or Elzach), and if you want to see something really different, go to Basel (Switzerland). Starting next Monday at 4 a.m., the Basler Morgestraich is a "haunting" experience.

    • @CompassChronicleTravels
      @CompassChronicleTravels  Год назад

      Yes!! It was so much fun! Haha we did eventually figure out the Helau but it took us a while 😆😆. It’s so cool that each place has its own. And that definitely makes sense on the uniforms. We sensed a bit of satire about the event which is really fun too! Will definitely have to look into the Switzerland event as well. Would love to go to Switzerland at some point too! Thank you for all the suggestions! We love hearing them! 💕

    Hi, you were really lucky with the weather. There were times when the parade had to be shortened or cancelled due to winter storms, and the last two years, it was another desaster that had them cancelled two times in a row, for the first time since the war.
    The big church you saw at the beginning is the Christuskirche, a church partly funded by the protestant house of the ruling Kaiser at the time (around 1900). The initial plan was to build a protestant church in Mainz that was bigger and larger than the Catholic cathedral from the 10th century you saw later. But then, they were short of money, so they just managed to built it a few inches higher, but not as big as the cathedral. ;-) The wide street you stood on at the beginning of the parade is the Kaiserstrasse, and the whole area on the right is called Neustadt, "new town", because it was planned to extend the city to the north-west across it's old borders. You can see some of the older buildings from that time behind you. The bright brown one, for instance. Many of them didn't survive the war, though, which you can see by the patchwork of new and old. The church was part of that development complex. Fun fact, that street was intended as a place for the wealthy. Nowadays, it's rather not so exclusive because its the main traffic route through town coming from the bridge and leading out to south-west. The bridge stands not far from the site where the Romans built theirs in 27 a.d.
    The uniforms are actually a mockery of uniforms of the powers of the time, the French, the Prussians, even the Austrians (if you ever have the time, visit the main cemetary and look at the graves of all those military "visitors" from those countries. In death, they rest not far from each other, if separated by nationality). The whole concept of Fassnacht or Rhenish carnival started in Cologne exactly 2 centuries ago as a satiric movement mocking the authorities, and still has kept much of its anarchic character. The Mainzer carnival, or Fassnacht, is particularly political, as you could see with the floats. Beginning at 11:11 am on November 11th every year (11 is the holy number for Rhenish carnival), the season starts and ends on Ash Wednesday. In that time, there are many events where music, artistic dance performances by the girls in uniforms you saw, and comedic shows, ranging from bad jokes to high quality satire are performed. The whole idea builds on the concept of the jester, the only person who could tell the king the truth in a joking manner. So the people call themselves Narren, which translates to fools as well as to jesters. The "Helau" is the traditional greeting, it was invented in Mainz, of course, the people of Düsseldorf just used it earlier. ;-)
    There are other, very different forms of carnival to celebrate the end of Lent. In your video, you saw a group in demon costumes. They come from the deep south and were visiting paraders, so to speak. The different names that you hear, Fastelovend in Cologne, Fastnacht in Mainz, or Fasnet in Swabia/Baden all mean the same in different dialects, the night of Lent. If you think everybody in Germany would understand each other, you are in for a surprise. ;-)

      Oh my goodness thank you for all the amazing info! We will definitely refer back to it…all of the history is so great to have!! We definitely picked up on the Satire, though didn’t necessarily understand it all and that makes so much sense about the costumes also being a satirical reference. That’s too bad about it being cancelled in the past-it was so much fun!
      We DEFINITELY want to check out some other locations and it’s looking like Cologne will be the next stop!

    Don't worry about dressing up for carnival. It's not a must in Germany. It is important that you feel comfortable with what you are doing. So have fun here in Germany.

    Just saw your video from the last fastnacht on the Rosenmontag here in Mainz. If you want to, check out the Rosenmontag in Freiburg im Breisgau. It's totally different to the Rheinische Fastnacht/Karneval that is in Mainz or Köln. In Freiburg it's called Fastnet.

    Yes, visit the canival in Cologne as well. Cologne, Mainz and Düsseldorf are the main spots. Further south in the black forrest area and in the Allgäu they celebrate similar which is called Fastnacht but there is a different traditional background. Find out by yourself.

    Although the Cologne Parade on Rose Monday is the biggest in Germany, I invite you to my hometown Düsseldorf for the next year because we have the most beautiful parade there. 😊 And you can also practice on the "Helau" and do not have to learn new words.

    the thing about Mainz carnival is that is the most political one all over Germany. In the carnival season (which starts on November 11th at 11.11 and lasts until Ash Wednesday), all of the clubs that were marching in the parade have their club meetings (which are mixes of musical numbers, and whacky speeches mixed with making fun of current local, national and international politics). These are called “Sitzungen” and the are a mockery of political towns meetings and such and follow a certain protocol. All of the old-fashioned costumes you saw are, in turn, a mockery of the French occupation troops (which wore red, blue and white uniforms) in the olden days, which is where all of this tradition has its roots…

  • @Attirbful
    @Attirbful Год назад

    What you heard is not “Hallo” but *Helau* which is the appropriate carnival greeting in Mainz. In Cologne, it is “Kölle Alaaf”…

    1:40 See. That's what I think of when I think Germany. Hehe
    Anyhow, it's not that we don't kow carneval in (South & East) Netherlands either.
    As to dressing in uniforms: originally is was to make fun of the uniforms of the proper regime of the towns. So city flag and names even changes during carneval. For example, Den Bosch's flag is red & white with a gold tree on black, but Oeteldonk (= Den Bosch)'s flag is red, white & yellow. So It's much more than just party.

      It was so fun! And it’s funny you say that because we talked about that very thing! I’ve never been to Macy’s day but I never feel like parades get that close or appear that close when I’ve seen the larger ones on tv. Here the floats and parade performers were right next to you! (At least where we were located on the route). We couldn’t believe that! Very fun though and gave it a lot of energy.

    à Mayence, les imbéciles crient Hellau, à Cologne, Kölle Alaf, Mannheim, Mannem AHOI, et à Fribourg Narri Narro. cette tradition du carnaval existe depuis le Moyen Age. Ici, les gens peuvent à nouveau célébrer avant le début du Carême. Vous pouvez comparer cela un peu avec Hellowean.

      @@CompassChronicleTravels In the short run, many things will seem strange and crazy to you, but in the medium term you will learn to love a lot of them. Small tip on the side, the Germans are actually really nice. There are a few exceptions, but they exist all over the world.For next year I would really recommend Cologne, but be careful - if you thought Rosenmontag in Mainz would have been big, then prepare yourself for the fact that Cologne will be many times bigger.
