One night I played a game (goalie) but earlier that day I worked out on my legs . My legs were tight so I stretched before the game as I normally would. I was playing old school stand up style and I kicked out my right leg and made a save but felt a snap/burning in the back of my leg. I stuck it out and with in the same period I did the same with my left leg. That was it for 7 weeks and lots of physio. I never worked out on legs on game day again and since. Love these old goalie videos
I miss seeing goalies who look only a little bigger rather than twice as big with the gear. The pads that are built to protect the body.. not the net. Not to mention those old style masks from the 70's and so many teams that no longer exist. I loved most teams back then.. then they started to move... and I lost the love of the teams that moved with one exception (Nords to Denver).. still, I grew up with the WHA and NHL and loved that era... miss those teams.
I'd rather have those chest saves than those RIDICULOUS MICKEY MOUSE goals from the 80s! Hockey is not about aesthetics and nostalgia - those floppy desperation saves MAY look cool, but this style died for a reason.
@@vaultsuit I'd rather see true athleticism and creativity than relying so much on extra padding. Goalies go down now and can literally build a pad wall that takes away the bottom of the net
I loved the defunct goalie brands koho cooper aeroflex 😅 Heaton wave my all time favorite and hometown hero hasek wore the heaton Bauer and tps brand equipment. I tried to emulate everything he wore when I played goalie in high school but the equipment was so expensive and I absolutely sucked !!!! 😅😅
Dude !!! He was soo underrated as a back up goaltender he showed he could step in when Barrasso was struggling or injured . With his brown brand equipment and his Danny devito penguin from batman mask 😅
Actually, the pads are smaller today than in these clips. Height and width. Goalies back then were just more comfy with different heights of pads but they were allowed to wear taller and wider pads than goalies today. Pads are smaller by one inch in width today than the 12 inch wide pads these goalies were allowed to wear.
6 to 8 lbs for each leg pad. The gear was very heavy & bulky odd.. goalies today in yesteryears gear , netminders of yesteryear in today's gear.. you get the picture
@@tivertoans9645 I ended my goalie career in the early 70's, but i kept my goalie helmet. It is a Jofa of Swedish origin, similar to the one Wayne Gretzky used (though mine is red). ruclips.net/video/csgMrdIa0Uk/видео.html
...when hockey was so much fun! Roy, Vanbiesbrouck, Fuhr, Hextall...such style. Now they wear the largest of pads and just butterfly and keep stick/paddle on the ice...yawn
Funny enough, your mentioned hero Roy was "pioneer" of the modern goalie style. So... And no, today goalie does not have "bigger" pads. Look for example at Garth Snow pads from the time he was active goalie. Today pads cannot be wider than 11 inches and "taller" than 38 inches. So yes, today goalies looks bigger, because THEY are bigger as a humans + they facing harder and more precise shots with overall much faster pace of the game. Plus majority of great saves in this video was made as "desperation" ones after goalie was caught in bad position or even after his own mistake. Nowdays goalies are much more technical... and in compare with "old time" goalies makes way less mistakes in movement. And before you ask, my "idol" and most favourite goalie is Félix Potvin.
Ah, ignorant hockey fan that doesn't know a thing about goaltending. Poor soul. Were you born stupid or did you wait a bit? Are you even a hockey player? I play hockey, I am a goalie, let me say if I was wearing the old stuff I know I'd be dead. I would have taken a puck to the chest and with those flimsy old chest protectors and who've had a heart attack and died on the ice.
if you are a true fan of the game, you'll notice how horribly out of position some of these goalies find themselves after the initial, "amazing" saves!!
This is why the Stand Up Style became obsolete after Patrick Roy popularized the Butterfly Style. While the Butterfly has its flaws (top is left relatively open, goalies have more strain on their knees, it's more "robotic"), it erases low shots and promotes better positioning. It also allows the goalie to prepare for second and third chances better.
It also effectively eliminated anyone who is 6' and under from playing the position. Guys like Mike Vernon, Grant Fuhr, Mike Ritcher, arguably a very Hall of Fame worthy goalie, would not be viable in today's game. The game has progressed ins some areas and regressed in others. @@Pokemonmaster150b
@@Pokemonmaster150b Well, the butterfly style evolved into bigger goalies like Vasilevsky etc, to "cover" the flaws. Plus nowdays goalies are let´s say 3x more flexible, 3x stronger than "oldtimers". I can remember seeing Mike Richter with this "gymnastic" legs was like watching "ghost". Now, majority of NHL goalies can do the same.
Styles change when you equipment increaes 60% in size ! I miss this hockey !!
As do I. 👍

No stupid knee sliding, only stand up...pure goalies!
Goaltending was so much more fun back then. these guys truly made saves not just drop to your knees and let the puck hit the michelin man pads

80s music too!!!!!! Old skooooool!!!!!
It was such a different play style lol
I like the music on these videos :D
Ken Wreggets glove save is one of the best of all time.
Loved that cooper chris osgood style mask
0:59 for the greatest glove save ever....Ken Wregget.
Absolutely!!!!!!!!

Goaltending has evolved a lot in a short time...
They all play the entire game on their knees now, being beaten left and right on the corners.
And they don't let those terrible soft goals like they used to
@@vaultsuit yes they do. Over the shoulders when down on their knees. The snipers score a lot of goals like that now.
Who s the first goalie in video ? Running Ranger ? :D
Very Good video

Only 80s and 90s kids remember
And the music too!!!
I'll never forget. These were my heroes as a young goalie in the 80's and early 90's.
I love how “old school” covers like 30 years of hockey

Excactly. They weighted ton, especially when wet.
Nice video! Who was the goalie at 0:29?
I think that was Mikail Shtalenkov
the first few clips the helmets look like player helmets
They were!
@@Vinterfrid then can i have one?

When goalies still had character .. todays goalies are boring
Go back to old-style goalie equipment and the risks involved and open up the game!
collegesuccess half the guys would be out of the league
