- Tori Wade and I were able to see the Sombrero Ranches Great American Horse Drive. The drive forms two functions. The first is to move horses owned by various dude ranches from public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management where they spend the winter back to private owners. The second is to provide entertainment for tourists who are willing to spend $3000 for a week which includes food and bunkhouse lodging riding instruction and tack for the duration of the the drive as well as transportation to and from the Yampa Valley Airport. I doubt those city slickers had to work too hard.

I swear I saw draft horses, a Friesian, a thoroughbred and some gaited horses in the mix. What a colorful herd.
We had Horses growing up, there is nothing more Beautiful then the smooth gliding of Horses, and there Smell is something to BE HOLD, miss having them.

This would have been magical to see.
I found trotting a horse on the road for a while helps trim the hoof to a most natural shape and level so all that is left for the farrier is removing the excess hoof wall thickness and flares. Concrete is great it acts like an angle grinder on a hard hoof. Beautiful horses, great video.

Your right it helps trim them.
But moving on pavement and concrete for too long is bad for their legs

That being said, there were a bunch of beautiful horses in the herd. Really awesome bays with Arabian traits, a strong Indian pony influence with the paints and appys. Three that stood out to me; a beautiful tall bay with absolutely no blaze, and then there were two big blacks with black front hooves and white back hooves. They could be twins!

The map shows only one road through Maybell, Colorado in the sparsely populated northwest corner of Colorado. The posting was in May so I presume they have gathered all these horses from the pastures northwest of town and where they spent the winter and are delivering them to the dude ranches farther east toward the direction of Denver for the beginning of their "summer dude ranch experiences".
All of them were my favorite breed and color....fat, happy, healthy...

Aside from car engines this is the best sound ever.
What I thought was brilliant irony was that when everything went wrong, the horse went "right". We enjoyed seeing them close up from that point on. :o)

For the people commenting on colors you have roans (red roan 1:52), leopard complex (nice bird spot 3:27, lovely blanket 3:33), pinto (sabino, overo and tobiano - splash white overo 4:16), chestnuts, palominos, possible dilute creams, bays, browns, possible homogeneous (2:33) & heterogeneous (1:43/2:31) blacks, duns (nice one 4:01), normal buckskin (far horse 4:28), sooty buckskin (2:04), greys/whites, & pangaré or 'mealy bay' (3:58). Not really unusual colors. If anything unless a foal coat 1:31/5:11 with the dark heads, the leopard (varnish "roan") grullos (1:30/1:34), the curly coated bay (1:46), & the sooty buckskins (2:04, 2:35 & 2:58) with the "mask" over the eyes are the most distinctive of the bunch.

Definitely have about every color in here and several different breeds as well. There are quarter horses, paints, possibly thoroughbreds, halflingers, some warm bloods, looked like a couple perchons as well.

So would I!!!! All of my childhood I have always been particular to Buckskins and Buttermilks, but, really though EVERY one of these horses are EXQUISITE and MIGHTY GORGEOUS!!!! NO slaughter for them!!!!!

What happened was that some guy next to me brought his drone to photograph the horses and that scared them off the road. An official with the horse drive came along and told the guy if he did not take down his drone, he was going to shoot it down. He took it down.
When they turned did they reunite with the other ones??

Yes it's a stunning horse
It's called a Bald Face Overo. Bald face=all white including just past the eyes. Overo is very white large markings in contrast to an all black or very dark body.

So what happened to all the horses that ran through the cars?
Lindsay Grove, where I was parked was just outside of town. There was a very wide shoulder to the road where a long line of cars were parked. The horses had plenty of room to run between the ditch and the cars. I'm talking like 15 feet. The pen where the horses were being moved to was just a few hundred feet further down. There were no problems.

Can someone explain what this is to me? I’ve never heard of this before. It says in the description something about the BLM and wild horses and moving from summer pasture to winter pasture so I can kind of put the pieces together I’m just lost on what this whole thing is. Like why are they trotting on the road where is this does this happen in more than one place cause I’ve never heard of large scale moves like this. I’m just confused.
The way I read it was it is in Colorado. Several different area ranchers use the government land in the summer for pasture. They move them through town each fall as an event for the town. Apparently, they round them up, separate them, and take them to their respective ranches. I hope I am correct and that this answers your questions.
They do the same thing in Dubois, WY. Only they move cattle, not horses down main street.

I watched so many westerns in my life I never seen all the cowboys at the head ...dont they usually spread out so they stop horses from veering away. Even though I read the comments about a drone flying around

There should be a license for drone users or at least drone-free zones like airports.
In wrong hands they can do lot of damage in wrong places.
Luckily nobody got hurt.
The FAA has send out a new rule and order that this drones are restricted to fly on airports and the vicinity around them and also over the most institutions of the FBOP! This includes the USP Florence ADMAX and the whole FCC Florence in Colorado and many other high sensitive areas of the country like Air Force Bases and Secret Service areas! And people who doesn't follow this new restrictions get punished with spending time in prison and a restitution to pay! That's it and it is better to follow it, because they don't understand jokes about it! No, these are wild horses being moved from winter pasture to summer pasture.

You could not just load one up and take it home. There is probably a process you could follow to get one though.
