Very well put! Saw Yes perform 3 or 4 times from the '70's to the '90s with various configurations of band members. What a show! The musicianship, the atmosphere they created onstage, and the compositions all had a lot of transport for concert goers and die hard fans of the music. They were one of those bands that left the audience gobsmacked, wondering how they could be that good live. I'm still very grateful for those experiences.

The journey, in music, it's called a fugue: moving from one piece into another, tying them all in together. Prog Rock kept the structure of classical music while expanding the boundaries of instruments and sounds.

It's more of a rhapsody than a fugue. A fugue consists of a subject (theme) being repeated by many parts in one ensemble. The other parts usually harmonise with each other as well. Look up J.S. Bach to hear some examples of fugue.
A rhapsody is a piece that has multiple sections, usually differing in style or tempo. Like this song. :)

I agree!! It's also the power of the "G note" common tone which is part of each of the three chords: Eb major, G major and C major, which comprise this coda. It's referenced in the organ, bass and the solo sections. It serves as a hypnotic backdrop to the changing harmonies moving all around the common tone. This motive was actually something Steve Howe had written for the previous band he was in. He dusted it off and presented it to Yes, who used it as the coda. There is a video of Steve Howe on YT not only telling this story but teaching the chord voicings.

  • @jbassguy571
    @jbassguy571 3 года назад +36

Chris squire was the best bass player ever imo, and I'm a massive Geddy fan. I think Rush is the perfect gateway drug into the more complex music waters of bands like Yes and that is perhaps why Rush has become the darling of the "reaction video" movement. I remember seeing an interview with I think Geddy and Alex where they said they saw Yes live during the late 70s while they were working on one of their own albums maybe Farewell to Kings, and they just wanted to go home and quit music because Yes were on another level. They felt I guess ashamed of their own material on comparison. I was lucky enough to see both bands live multiple times and they were all masters but I think Yes was on another plane in terms of complexity. Rush win the long game because they figured out how to have complexity but yet remain much more accessible to the casual listener, whereas Yes music takes work to peel back the layers, but when you take the time to do so it is magic underneath.

    Sister bluebird flying high above
Shine your wings forward to the sun
Hide the mysteries of life on your way
Though you've seen them, please don't say a word
What you don't know, I have never heard
Starship trooper, go sailing on by
Catch my soul, catch the very night
Hide the moment from my eager eyes
Though you've seen them, please don't tell a soul
What you can't see, can't be very whole
    Speak to me of summer
Long winters longer than time can remember
    Setting up of other roads
To travel on in old accustomed ways
I still remember the talks by the water
    The proud sons and daughters
That in the knowledge of the land
Spoke to me in sweet accustomed ways
Mother life, hold firmly on to me
Catch my knowledge higher than the day
Lose as much as only you can show
Though you've seen them, please don't say a word
What I don't know, I have never shared
Loneliness is a power that we possess to give or take away forever
All I know can be shown by your acceptance of the fact there shown before you
Take what I say in a different way and it's easy to say that this is all confusion
As I see a new day in me, I can also show if you and you may follow
    Speak to me of summer
Long winters longer than time can remember
    Setting up of other roads
To travel on in old accustomed ways
I still remember the talks by the water

All my mates thought I was weird but eventually they got it. When music became heavily commercialised towards the end of the last decade, I gave up.
I still have all my teen stuff, Floyd, ELP, Tull, Zeppelin, Queen, Genesis and a whole host more.
    Your reactions say it all!
I got a bit into dance music in later years and am now mostly into psychedelic trance: Although no instruments, it still is ear and brain candy ;-)

If you want a journey check out Tales From Topographic Oceans thier sprawling double concept album containing only 4 songs each taking a full side of the lp. The Revealing Science Of God,The Remembering, The Ancient and Ritual is some of the most breathtaking music Yes has ever composed.
