- Greystone Mansion and Park, owned by the City of Beverly Hills and situated on 18.3 acres, is magnificent in beauty and rich in California history. Greystone Mansion was designed by the renowned Southern Californian architect Gordon B. Kaufmann and the landscape architect was Paul G. Thiene. The land was a wedding gift from oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny, Sr. to his son, Edward "Ned" Doheny, Jr. and his wife. Following the purchase of the Estate in 1965 by the City of Beverly Hills, in 1971 the entire 18.3 acre site, including its centerpiece Greystone Mansion, was formally dedicated as a public park. In 1976 the Greystone Estate was officially recognized as a historic landmark and entered into the National Registry of Historic Places. The Mansion and the grounds are often used in filmmaking and television production. The house's descending staircase is one of the most famous sets in Hollywood.
There are fifty-five livable rooms within the 46,054 square feet of space in the Mansion. Built in 1927, the Doheny family moved into the residence in September of 1928. The entire estate took over three years to complete at a cost of over $3 million, an almost unimaginable sum in real estate at the time. The Mansion alone cost $1,238,378.76 to build.

1972 - i learned how to parallel park there. my dad proceeded to walk in the door nearest to us and we walked around until we got kicked out. beautiful! all i remember is black and white stone floors and a wrought iron staircase and being scared of ending up in jail. i was 15.
I go up there every once in awhile to take friends and family. I've also been lucky enough to go inside for a tour. Incredible place always fun to visit.

They have done a lot of work to the place since I was there last. The over grown tree and vines are all gone. Green grass, new flowers and rose gardens. The interior has been painted. Wow. And this video was five years ago.
Was watching a B science fiction movie from 1963 and found myself far more interested in the “house.” I must save my Pennies and live in a place this beautiful sone day!
While it's wonderful that the City of B. Hills purchased and saved the Doheny estate, there was a downside. Other magnificent 1920's and 1930's estates could not be saved as the City was already paying for one grand place and had no need for another. So, Pickfair was sold and demolished and replaced, and the Lloyd estate house was saved (for now) but the grounds almost all sold off and subdivided. I could name other grand estates lost.
I've had the pleasure and pressure of working in that house, a few days before Christmas 2017. I had to remove fifteen of the original wall sconce light fixtures from the bottom floor main entrance, hallways, and the library and what I call the cathedral room and replace them with some new fixtures for the production of a mini series for television which aired this past February. I was inside all alone most of the time except when an occasional armed Park Ranger would come in and hang out making sure I didn't damage anything.
Two days and the second day turned into night while I finished and then a couple weeks later I had to reinstall the original lights, again basically alone, because by now the Rangers knew me and trusted me. I've got lots of photos inside and outside of the house.
For those of you thinking it looks haunted or creepy it is supposedly haunted because of the murder suicide that took place only a few years after it was built. The Doheny family were one of the wealthiest families in the world at the time and had the house built for the son and his wife whom the son killed the wife and then himself in the house.
I didn't see or hear anything but it is a little looming being in a home that large alone. But, every large home feels that way. I've been in the Sowden House doing work also which is the house once owned by the suspected murderer doctor of the unsolved Black Dahlia murders from the 1940s, for the same mini series production which the story was tied into that mystery. I've been in the secret basement rooms where the murderous doctor commited his crimes. That house was definitely creepy feeling in those basement rooms. The rest of the house seemed fine.
The Greystone Mansion/ Doheny Mansion is amazing. The magnificence of the workmanship of the house and the grounds is beyond incredible.

Yes, it was. I loved working on that show. We shot in so many cool places and of course being a period setting, that keeps me real busy on almost every location.

The AFI campus was located here in the 70s, when I worked on Martin Brest’s thesis feature film, ‘Hot Tomorrows’. I had the pleasure of walking these halls. Our production offices were located in the north east of the mansion. Fun days.
I took a tour of Greystone Mansion back in 2010 the city of Beverly Hill had a open house/ Homes and Garden like show of the Greystone. The walk around was like being in the year of 1927. I see why the movie industry like to film there.

+DEE P As somebody who has a very large family home, it is all about payoff. People who work hard and make a ton of money generally want something more than the average home. Besides, even though it is huge and might not feel like a home, they become more like regular homes after people actually live there. More clutter, less clean, that kind of thing. I know my house feels like my home, and not some mansion that is just for luxury.

So good the city bought the house and let's hope they keep it. It's great to see an original traditional mansion that made this area famous still existing. If it ever got sold to one of those "celebrities " types who talk fast in songs rather than sing, it would be destroyed then demolished and a crap boxy design put in its place.

Exquisite! But why no furniture, rugs or draperies? It's so bare.
It is much easier to maintain in terms of cleaning and dusting for a small cleaning staff. Insurance liability has also become a limiting factor.
Its a public park now, so no need for furniture. Though they do have a designer showcase every year, which is fun, and gives an idea of living in such lavish surroundings.
