Why It Sucks Inside an M1 Abrams Tank

- The M1 Abrams tank is one of the most advanced and powerful tanks in the entire world. But, being in a tank is nothing like in movies or video games.
Abrams Tanks are massive metal beasts with groundbreaking technology, but they were NOT built for your comfort.
Like tight spaces?
It can trigger claustrophobia issues even in the healthiest soldier because there's not much room to move around. Inside the turret, you'll find three out of the four crew members crammed into an extremely tight space… and during military operations, the tank crew may spend hundreds of hours inside in the dark smelly tank interior.
Spending hours or even days in an airtight tank may be unbearable. The smell emanating from the same crew members is the worst part. The dirtiest is always the loader that after spending countless hours inserting the ammunition into the barrel, sweats more than anyone else - and of course, there’s no bathroom in Abrams tanks, so while it might be cool to check out, you wouldn’t want to stay in one very long. Наука

Gotta say that I experienced a fellow tanker who definitely broke that stereotype 🤢🤮🤣
They do have air outlet systems to get rid of the sulfur from the rounds and it helps with human funk
I was once a M1A1 crew member, my unit was compromised of nobody over five foot six inches. I was five foot five and hated the turret, which is why I was glad when I got to be the driver. The driver hole is the best position period. My favorite thing in the world was waking up on cold winter days, popping the driver hatch, raising my seat, and just slightly peeking out of the hole at the slope of the tank as it was dusted with ice and snow. Cocooned in my sleeping bag watching the dazzling sparkling rainbows of sunlight glinting off the thousands of ice particles on the slope as the morning sun rose burning away the fog from the ground.
I’m at 6’ and had no problems in the turret.
You are correct in implying that the driver’s hole was the best position for stretching out.
I spent 10 years in M60s and another 13 years in M1A1s. The turret on the 60s felt a little larger than the M1 but the driver’s hole was better on the M1.
It was nice to know that all that main gun ammo was behind the blast doors in the M1. Having all those exposed main gun rounds in the 60 was a little disconcerting.
You made it magical.😊

@@JeanLucCaptain Good news that it’s only competition’s main gun can’t even fire a round that can pierce it’s armor.
@@mr5yy Who said that, have you watched the testing videos of Abrams being shot with APFSDS rounds? Their hard to find for good reason. The only parts of an Abrams that can withstand APFSDS rods are the turret cheeks and front chassis armor. Most modern tanks are impervious from the front regardless. From the sides and the rear you can't make a tank that can move faster than 25mph that can stop a tungsten rod moving at 5,400 feet per second. Tanks have been able to shoot APFSDS rounds since the 50s along with AFVs with 10mm of armor and a cannon that can shoot those same rounds being around since the 80s.

From what I've heard, it's nice being in an air conditioned compartment when you're fighting a desert war.
Are the tanks air conditioned? Seems like, knowing the military, it’d be cooled to just below dangerously high temps and that about it
@@ZildawolfFrom what I've read online it's mainly about protecting electronics from overheating and keeping the internal compartments air tight and filtered. Smell really isn’t a problem. When you all smell, no one smells. The worst part of being in a tank for hours is the numb Ass, headaches from wearing the headset etc
Been backpacking - same thing. Not showering or even changing clothes for days, the only thing you smell is the campfire you made day 1

This person who wrote has clearly never crewed a tank in their lives. Western MBTs are rather comfy, smelly crewmates are one of the last things you worry about while in the field. They're not all that claustrophobic, 3 of the crew members have access to hatches for sun and air whenever they're not in a danger area. Pissing in bottles or taking a dump in a bucket might happen, but it's honestly not all that bad. These tanks are designed to be lived in for days, because a comfy crew works better, fights better and lives longer. There's a reason Abrams tanks rolled over Iraq in a matter of days. You could be in far worse conditions, the mounted infantry probably have it way worse.
no shit they've never crewed a tank, they just do research and stuff
The reason the Abrams rolled over iraq was because Iraq was still using Soviet surplus, while America had something new. despite what idiots and movies say, it's an extremely rare occasion for the more technically advanced vehicles to fail to outperform older counterparts.
Mind you, tanks aren't the future anymore, they're the past. In this day and age a missile can pinpoint target the tank and if the first misses, they can just keep shooting until they don't, people significantly undervalue what missiles can accomplish with the incredible accuracy they have. Hell even the A10 Warthog gets more done with missiles than it's notorious nose gun.

I was in a mech unit and while what he said us true, 1) Baby wipe baths are common to keep clean, 2) soda bottles are handy toilets for #1, 3) if in battle, you dont have time to worry about claustrophobia, 4) the crew is protected from hot/cold/rain/etc., 5) tanks need to refuel and reload their on board ammo storage, this gives the crew time to stretch their legs and go #2, 6) the crew rides everywhere so they aren't exhausted from walking when battle starts. Being in a tank is actually a decent gig, beaten out only by being in a Bradley or Paladin since they have slightly more room.

As an Abrams tank crewman, I can say that there IS bathrooms. Gatorade bottles are best to piss in. And if it’s serious enough and truly a shit emergency, empty 50 cal can. Of course the crew will be wearing gas masks lol. Personally I have showered in the tank as well. Solar water heater, shower hose hanging down from the loaders hatch. Open the sub turret access hatch- turn on bilge pump when crew is done.
A great tank, number 2 behind challenger 👍🏻🇬🇧
"It doesn't have a bathroom" What did you think it is? Some land Battleship with all your accommodations to suit you?
Besides, who wants a bathroom near the king sized bed.
they literally just said it doesn’t have a bathroom? they werent implying that it’s supposed to
I mean it’s kinda a land battleship
"It can trigger claustrophobia issues"

Driver & Gunner on a M728 CEV, and mechanized Combat Engineer in M113s. Spent 10 years in tanks and APCs. I wouldn't change a thing. I loved being 1st Armored Division and mechanized.
Farting in a tank is more likely to start a farting contest! rather than cause friction among the crew. Loud farts can relieve monotony! and a response, 'jeez mate, that is bad! Something's crawled up your arse and died! Ah the memories of tank life! the comradeship!
I loved my time in the Abrams, i spent 3 yrs with the same crew. It was the most kickass time in my life.
“There’s no bathroom in the Abrams”
Yeah like you have one in your tank
Yah they talk about this stuff like bathrooms are a universal concept in main battle tanks. I have heard that the old T-72's have a bathroom, it is wherever you happen to be when you confront any of the modern tanks, lol...
The challenger 2 has a toilet.
I was a Medic in 1/33 AR BN(3rd Amoured Division) in Germany back in 1984- we transitioned into a M-1 unit- at that time we had been set up with M60A3 Tanks..we thought the whole game had changed
I mean the Challenger 2 has a kettle, us Brits can't fight without our tea 😂
I don’t think there’s any tank that’s “comfortable” to stay in 😂
Idk, the commanders position in an M103 feels bigger than a NY apartment
@@ArmorandArtillery well when you compare it to an NY apartment everything looks comfortable 😂
Look at how much space is in the Maus. Basically a small apartment lol.

Being honest I have a friend who is a tanker and he doesn’t say that it’s as claustrophobic as you state it is
It depends from person to person lol it's not as simple as saying "wrong" or right"
Ive been in one before it’s definitely cramped but it depends
I’m a tanker and i can tell you it isnt (as long as you are not claustrophobic) but its uncomfortable as fuck
@@feracier13 I really want to be a tanker but I’m currently 6’3, not going to be fun for me.
@@Whovian-wg6pz Forehead, meet ceiling. Ceiling, meet forehead. You two play nice now!
The best seat is the drivers seat. Smart crews switch seats.... Second best for sleeping is gunners seat. The loader can put up the basket and if they're young and small they can curle up and sleep on the floor. The person in the tank commanders seat is screwed and might as well be the person awake. Now if you camp out and put the main gun over the side the front slope is great it will straighten out a bad back. The back deck is awesome in winter keeps you nice and toasty.
It also burns so well when it meets Lantset
Nevermind it’s one of if not the most ergonomically comfortable tank in service today…
If I’m going for ergonomics, I’ll take the Challenger 2 with a built in kettle to make tea in.
@@jesusofbullets british priorities XD
@@Helperbot-2000
I’m just sayin that while the Abrams is my fav, obv if it has a tea kettle that it’s gotta be spacious and built for at least a little comfort.
The most comfortable position in the Abrams tank is the driver's seat when the TC has to announce driver wake up before every single command you know they did something right
Wasn't there a crew fatality in the Gulf War when an Abrams driver fell asleep and the tank went into a canal killing the crew?
@@2ears1mouth43 off hand I dont know, but damn that driver seat is cozy.
Technically , you don't have to be awake to drive one. You can drive one with one arm out of your sleeping bag
I thought the M1 was pretty roomy but then I was M2 crewman. Do the same video with an M2! Now that’s tight.
“One of the most advanced and powerful tanks in the entire world”
War thunder: Turret ring
I mean, Fury did a pretty good job of showing how claustrophobic it can be inside a tank
Thats ww2 era too, and even the sherman tank was considered to be one of the most "comfortable" tanks in that era compared to the others
I’d much rather a larger M1 over the T-72, which has the exact same “internal protected volume”, but is insanely uncomfortable. It’s so bad that 3hrs “buttoned-up” was the absolute limit for Soviet allied tankers.
And the crews have to be less than 1.7m in height to be selected for the tank.
@@muhammadnursyahmi9440 here’s the added kicker, you have to be under that height limit, but there is also a hard weight limit for each crewmen to be able to fit into their spots and work comfortably/efficiently.
And…you are also missing the 4th crewman of the heavyweight MBTs, so essential field maintenance(changing a broken track) is expected to take twice as long according to T-72/90 crew maintenance books.
Imagine trying to change a track on T-90 *with only 1 other person helping you* in a combat zone. That’s because the 3rd crewman(the commander) is covering you, like the loader does in a 4-man MBT.
Merkava is better than either, imo....
@@pex_the_unalivedrunk6785 that is a damn good tank for protecting the lives of the crew. The engine at the front should be mandatory for new designs. Every extra piece of metal between the enemy and the crew is a great decision.
The mini-missile APS is something to behold also, and I’m happy the M1 is going to be getting them.
@@cjwrench07 the engine does not really help much for stopping shrapnel or kinetic projectiles

Just stop. It's been repeatedly established, more than ever that Russian tanks are outclassed by NATO tanks. There was a time when a somewhat legitimate argument could be made about who built the better tank.
But not anymore.
Ever since the clinically insane Russian dictator invaded Ukraine we have seen on full display the glaring failure of Russian tanks and the complete lack skill of Russian soldiers.
Russian soldiers are ill-trained drunks, rapists, paedophiles, and murderers. They're poorly equipped, and have pathetic leadership. This humiliation has been made crystal clear for all to see by reputable journalists from all over the world.

After spending 4 years in the turret, I went downstairs to the drivers cab. As for the smell, you don't notice it after 3 or 4 days.
I love the Abrams when it’s cold out lol that back grill sure is toasty
Drivers always have it a little better: you always have your own space and you're not being thrown around the cabin like the rest of the crew.
