Why It Sucks Inside an M1 Abrams Tank

  • The M1 Abrams tank is one of the most advanced and powerful tanks in the entire world. But, being in a tank is nothing like in movies or video games.
Abrams Tanks are massive metal beasts with groundbreaking technology, but they were NOT built for your comfort.
    Like tight spaces?
It can trigger claustrophobia issues even in the healthiest soldier because there's not much room to move around. Inside the turret, you'll find three out of the four crew members crammed into an extremely tight space… and during military operations, the tank crew may spend hundreds of hours inside in the dark smelly tank interior.
Spending hours or even days in an airtight tank may be unbearable. The smell emanating from the same crew members is the worst part. The dirtiest is always the loader that after spending countless hours inserting the ammunition into the barrel, sweats more than anyone else - and of course, there’s no bathroom in Abrams tanks, so while it might be cool to check out, you wouldn’t want to stay in one very long.

I was once a M1A1 crew member, my unit was compromised of nobody over five foot six inches. I was five foot five and hated the turret, which is why I was glad when I got to be the driver. The driver hole is the best position period. My favorite thing in the world was waking up on cold winter days, popping the driver hatch, raising my seat, and just slightly peeking out of the hole at the slope of the tank as it was dusted with ice and snow. Cocooned in my sleeping bag watching the dazzling sparkling rainbows of sunlight glinting off the thousands of ice particles on the slope as the morning sun rose burning away the fog from the ground.

I’m at 6’ and had no problems in the turret.
You are correct in implying that the driver’s hole was the best position for stretching out.
I spent 10 years in M60s and another 13 years in M1A1s. The turret on the 60s felt a little larger than the M1 but the driver’s hole was better on the M1.
It was nice to know that all that main gun ammo was behind the blast doors in the M1. Having all those exposed main gun rounds in the 60 was a little disconcerting.

From the sides and the rear you can't make a tank that can move faster than 25mph that can stop a tungsten rod moving at 5,400 feet per second. Tanks have been able to shoot APFSDS rounds since the 50s along with AFVs with 10mm of armor and a cannon that can shoot those same rounds being around since the 80s.

This person who wrote has clearly never crewed a tank in their lives. Western MBTs are rather comfy, smelly crewmates are one of the last things you worry about while in the field. They're not all that claustrophobic, 3 of the crew members have access to hatches for sun and air whenever they're not in a danger area. Pissing in bottles or taking a dump in a bucket might happen, but it's honestly not all that bad. These tanks are designed to be lived in for days, because a comfy crew works better, fights better and lives longer. There's a reason Abrams tanks rolled over Iraq in a matter of days. You could be in far worse conditions, the mounted infantry probably have it way worse.

The reason the Abrams rolled over iraq was because Iraq was still using Soviet surplus, while America had something new. despite what idiots and movies say, it's an extremely rare occasion for the more technically advanced vehicles to fail to outperform older counterparts.
Mind you, tanks aren't the future anymore, they're the past. In this day and age a missile can pinpoint target the tank and if the first misses, they can just keep shooting until they don't, people significantly undervalue what missiles can accomplish with the incredible accuracy they have. Hell even the A10 Warthog gets more done with missiles than it's notorious nose gun.

I got to climb into a tank once, it was a display tank, an old WW2 design we got to visit it and some other stuff with the army cadets.
Ended up needing to see a doctor, it is a tight space but it's also a place where you have little room to move and every surface is hard, sharp unforgiving metal.
I stood up, bashed my head, fell, bashed my head again and shoulder, kicked out because of the pain and smashed my shin off the corner of the seat I was in.
Got 2 stiches in my head and never lived it down in the cadets for being the only guy to be injured by a museum exhibit.

Being in a tank is actually a decent gig, beaten out only by being in a Bradley or Paladin since they have slightly more room.

The loader can put up the basket and if they're young and small they can curle up and sleep on the floor. The person in the tank commanders seat is screwed and might as well be the person awake. Now if you camp out and put the main gun over the side the front slope is great it will straighten out a bad back. The back deck is awesome in winter keeps you nice and toasty.

And…you are also missing the 4th crewman of the heavyweight MBTs, so essential field maintenance(changing a broken track) is expected to take twice as long according to T-72/90 crew maintenance books.
Imagine trying to change a track on T-90 *with only 1 other person helping you* in a combat zone. That’s because the 3rd crewman(the commander) is covering you, like the loader does in a 4-man MBT.
