Something about restricting the usage of the n-word comes from a deeply rooted victim mentality. If it hurts to hear by other races other than black, it means it has still a lot of power in it. That power only demolishes by letting it go, not using it at all or only in a theoretical kind of way. To label everyone who is uttering this word casually, non-violently and not discriminatory as immediately racist is illogical and radical.
Look, I'm all for equality no matter what race, skin color or gender but I must say that creating a word that is only meant to be used by only certain people is not the right way to fight back the horrible past. Yes, this word was associated with black people who were targeted as slaves and that's disgusting and horrible but does it really change anything if only now the people can use it who were a victim of this word? We're giving more power into this one word and by that we turn it into something bad. A bad word. A word which has a dark past and can only be used by people that were once victims of it. It won't change or erase the past because the past is the past and it always will be. We as humans should move forward and fight our way forward and not back down when a word or something in general stands in our way. It's not easy but with time and practice you can do it. I've been bullied a lot and so I speak from experience. If no one will use this word then no one will get hurt. We're only making a mess by deciding on who can say it or not.
If everyone was allowed to say that word then it wouldn’t be offensive to anyone. As long as black people say it’s their word and feel badly when people say then it will stay a bad word. Take the power out of it. Let it mean anyone so it doesn’t mean someone.
@@nicholasoneal1521 no because white people don't experience systematic oppression (aka racism) solely based on their skin color. white gay men can reclaim the f-slur. white disabled, neurodivergent people can reclaim the r-slur. white women can reclaim the b-slur. white lesbians can reclaim the d-slur. reclamation of a slur can only work on people who are oppressed by the slur. if a certain slur hasn't been used to oppress you (not offend, not annoy, not degrade but OPPRESS), you cannot reclaim that slur. obviously this is my opinion and what i've learned with all the slur reclamation discourse that's been going on for years now. but my general rule of thumb is that if a word was used to oppress a minority (even if i'm part of that minority), i dont use it.
U mean to tell me I have to skip that word everytime it comes up in a song? Who does that? That would be a full-time job for me. Imagine paying a 130 for a concert ticket and then standing there having to worry about not saying the n-word.

Yes, hip-hop artist of the past, with a punk mentality to offend or cause reaction, have used the 'nword' carelessly in order to gain attention. However, the question should be: Why, even with the awareness we have today, some black people not only want to carry on calling each other the ‘nword’, they choose to broad-cast and glorify the ‘word’ in music culture and society. With a word that has such a history, it still seems outright counter-intuitive for black people to refer to each other with a word that is so closely associated with the horrendous oppression of their ancestors. Without proper explanation and clarity, it is only natural for anyone listing to music such as hip-hop, to start to question why black people are STILL referring to each other in such a way. This word can also mean something to one black person and something else to another. It's not about white people wanting to say the word, as the vast majority of people in general do not want to use this word, especially to offend. However, when it’s regarded as acceptable for one person to say but not another, any logical person is going to question this and try to understand why! Acceptance by one but not another, is commonly perceived to be a double standard, which in effect, actually creates marginalisation and promotes the continuation of diversity. The perceived double standard and the lack of clarity is why this question reappears and why people will continue to ask it. Futhermore, through history, once the 'nword', which has had a variety of different spellings, had evolved into a racial slur, it was used to oppress others as well as blacks. For example, white Irish people have before been referred to as the 'nword's of Europe'. The more one starts to research the history of the 'nword', the more the question "why can't I say this word if I am not black", seems justified to me. The people that use this word the most are the ones that are responsible for it's continued existence. This question will continue to be asked until the word is dropped by all and then the 'nword' as a racial slur or tool to diversify and create reaction will loose its power.

I'm here laughing in my Italian self. Like these Americans look insane to me. It's a word. If it's offensive said by a white person it's offensive said by a black person. It's a double standard to think it's hurtful just from one race. If you get so hurt by hearing a word it is just hurtful. Like people be whining like babies if it's so offensive stop using it yourself. It will fade away. Also the guy saying "oh I would never say derogatory terms to Hispanics." Dude why are you comfortable saying it to your community ? It's a fallacy saying oh you have a right insulting your siblings that other people don't have. I'm not a fucking piece of garbage I don't insult my siblings in the first place because it's offensive said by me and by anyone else. I'm in disbelief honestly by how some people think
I'm black, and to be 100% honest, I don't care if white people say the N word in songs, I don't find it racist when it's in songs, The reason why, The n word is a slur used in a racist way to describe african american people, however when it comes to music, it's not directed at african americans/black people, when you listen to music by a black rapper, they will say the n word a few times, but, imo, the n word completely loses it's PROPER meaning in songs. That's just my opinion, dont reply something being like ''uR sEtTinG a BaD eXaMpLe fOr WhiTe PeOpLe SaYiNg tHe n wOrD'' i'm not saying white people should say the N word, it's either: 1. Don't say it in Rap songs, 2. Don't let ANY RACE say it, 3. Let everybody use it.
Amazing that the Blacks use this word continually , but the Dambusters film is dubbed to remove the word when it was the name of the dog , and the the code word for the the breach of the Mohne Dam.
As Latina who listens to Rap music and hip hop music it scares me sometimes to speak because I don't want to say the wrong thing because I'm not a racist and I know it's horrible word but as king and queens of rap and hip hop should the n word be there songs because they are making okay it okay to say when they put in music so they should be the blame because if they don't want it being said they need to make that change because I'm scared of accidentally letting slip out if i sing along to rap or hip hop song if has if I unknowingly sing it out by accident because I'm not say to anyone besides just repeating in song its scares me artist you should make that change and leave the n word out of the vocabulary for music and in general
If it's in a song then yes, no matter what race you are if we sing your f'ing song we embrace your work and we feel you as an artist and any artist should be happy with that period.

Looking through history, a lot of terms and words, not limited to just racial slurs, changed their meaning, across languages. It is how language evolves. While changing, a word can have 2 meanings, like in this case, where some still use it as a racial slur but in rap it is mostly used like the word "homie" or "dude". While i agree that it should not be used by white people, by continously using it the word wont go away, but changing its meaning might even have a better effect in the long term. I hope one day the word will no longer trigger negative emotions, at least not when used in an absolutely non-aggressive way. For example, what if a white ( or other non-black) guy uses the word to refer to himself? For example, the expression "can a n***a (like can a guy) get a break?" (Not saying this is ok to do, just interested in how people feel about it)

Me 2 If you don't want others saying N word when they sing a song that includes the word in it's lyrics, then don't include the word in the song in the first place. You can not be mad getting at someone that is just singing along to a song that happens to include the N word as part of it's lyrics. While thay are singing I am pretty sure they are not calling anyone in particular N word. They are just following along and singing a song from their fav artist. Personally I prefer N word not being used in songs , but that obviously is not going to happen . And artist should have the freedom to produce their art without censorship. But down the side is you will have a bunch of white or other race teenagers enjoying that songs and singing along to it. Does it make them racist or their actions racist ?

It won't change or erase the past because the past is the past and it always will be. We as humans should move forward and fight our way forward and not back down when a word or something in general stands in our way. It's not easy but with time and practice you can do it. I've been bullied a lot and so I speak from experience. If no one will use this word then no one will get hurt. We're only making a mess by deciding on who can say it or not.

Yeah but the difference is... I can say the b word in any song. And it wouldn’t matter lol.

For example, the expression "can a n***a (like can a guy) get a break?"
