That was no misstep...the Nicholas Brothers didn't make missteps...the 1940's....
The Nicholas Brothers practiced about 7 hours a day, just to stay in practice.
These brothers did this in one take, the dance.
They said that they did the stair/split section in one take.
@@jerrygoldman4484 It was the whole dance. They were amazing and skillful and it was like they knew what the other would do and they were always in step.
@@vidajonez4339Well, they rehearsed it a lot and of course knew what the other was going to do. Explain the piano that had an ordinary top with music on it in the beginning and a different top with white edges that they danced on. With the dancing in front of the steps it seemed like they were in a slightly different position when they cut to the closer view. This does not take away at all my overwhelming love and respect for their prodigious talents. They would have gotten way more exposure were it not for the racism
of the time
@@jerrygoldman4484 I saw the documentary on them and that specific dance, they said unrehearsed and done on first take. You may not believe it but that is what the documentary said
@@jerrygoldman4484 I watched a documentary on them , and they highlighted this performance, and in the documentary it said it had not been rehearsed, and that it was done in one take. Unbelievable I know, but that what the documentary was focusing on ,how good they really were, even by the standards of those days.
This was all done in one take with no camera tricks or CGI. Basically what their live performance would look like. Huge talent.
If this performance came out nowadays, I would think there's no way this was done without some CGI trickery.
1943 from the film Stormy Wheather. The '40's (& some late '30's) were known as "the big band era" -- Benny Goodman, Glen Miller & the great Lionel Hampton on the xylophone.
What you're watching here is the final scene in the landmark 1943 motion picture, "Stormy Weather." It was the first big budget movie from a major motion picture studio with an all-black cast. Cab Callaway was one of the top "Big Band" bandleaders (and in Cab's case, a singer, too) coming out of the World War II era along with men like Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and others. And The Nicholas Brothers were very young with this was filmed. They would go on to be booked to perform in numerous other motion pictures because if audiences knew they were in the movie, they were box office gold. This dance scene was once described by Fred Astaire, who is thought by many to be the greatest dancer who ever lived, as "the greatest dance number ever captured on film." Astaire ought to know a thing or two about legendary dance numbers captured on film. His "Dancing On the Ceiling" scene from the 1951 movie, "Royal Wedding" is, itself, one of the landmark dance numbers ever caught on film. ruclips.net/video/b1AQjcmzvx8/видео.htmlsi=3-SkzZzXghiyIQmI
Cab Calloway is the (big) band director, and yes, lead singer on this number... hip hip! 😅
And then, "hep hep!"
Cab Calloway came from the Vaudeville tradition... Singer, dancer, band leader, arranger, manager, and long time house band for the famous Harlem Cotton Club.
Cab Calloway is a motherf***ing legend.
Best tap dance ever recorded on film.....and they DID NOT miss a step!
from movie-stormy weather-all black cast.
The emcee/singer was Cab Calloway , who led the big band playing in this clip....50 years later , he was featured in "The Blues Brothers"!!!!
There was no “almost fall” or misstep. They killed it perfectly every single time. They were the masters of dance and all dancers then and now are in awe of their amazing talent. Fred Astaire ,a legend, stated that there were none better than the Nicholas Brothers and this was a flawless performance; if he didn’t see a misstep, it didn’t exist. This was 1943 during the Big Band Era and right in the middle of WW2.
Not twins but real life brothers. What’s even more impressive imo is that this was done in 1 take
These dancers, the Nicholas Brothers, are exceptional dancers and would never make a faux pas in kicking an orchestra member. There are no missteps. These two brothers are perfectionists. There will never be another pair as the Nicholas Brothers.
Dude, I’ve watched a thousand reactions to this performance, because I love seeing people’s reactions to it. Yours was priceless.
I’m an old Jewish fart, 67, and to me…
This is the best musical and dance performance of all time.
But the 60s!?????
My God. I have underwear older than you.
Their granddaughters and now dancing! These brothers are fabulous. They also had a dance piece in the movie called The Pirate with Judy Garland and Gene Kelly.
It's so cool to see you totally digging this. It's about 20 years before my time but I have a deep appreciation for it. And the MC there is cab calloway, who was kind of The Godfather of the black Harlem Renaissance opulent period.
Tap dancing was huge back then. And these guys are just beyond athletic, it's just mind-blowing.
Check out some early footage of Cab Calloway doing his huge hit Minnie the Moocher.
The Nicholas Bros. BROKE THE MOLD. This was done all in one take! I recommend the mini Doc about them, it's wonderful. So many dancers, to this day know they can't match the talent that was these guys. 🕺🙌🕺
There was no misstep. These guys could dance like nobody’s business.
There is a slightly longer version of this clip which shows that it is actually the end of a movie "Stormy Weather" 1943. So glad you saw this.
You should do a reaction video.
1943. Hey, you're young and you've just been introduced to some of the most fabulous entertainers from a time period which most people don't even know existed...and don't care about, either. Now you've got plenty of time to discover more of these guys and others. The legendary Cotton Club in Harlem (100 years ago)..check it out. Also, Cab Calloway, late in his life, appeared in a big role in "The Blues Brothers" (1980). You've got to see him magically transformed onstage from 1980 back to his Cotton Club glory...white tails and all.. and singing his signature tune "Minnie the Moocher" to a theater filled with 1980 blues fans. It's the highlight of a very funny film, and Cab's performance really is something to treasure.
Cab, the director, singer, was a master of Scat. Scat was singing, that if you forgot the lyrics, you faked it with class.
1940's Big Band Era, Cab Calloway a major star, a real legend and the Nicholas Brothers were unparalleled dancers, no one, even the dancing legends at the time or since could do the things they did in their dance routines. Historical times in entertainment. This whole dance sequence was done in one shot, no AI, no CGI just pure unadulterated talent.
The original one take wonders! This was done in one take with not a lot of rehearsal. They were extremely talented brothers who were dedicated to their craft. Something I wish we had more of today!
Growing up in the "60"s We would watch all the movies , musicals, music shows and everything else from the "30"s,"40"s and "50" it was AWESOME , I REMEMBER watching this so many times!! 😍🎶🎹🎷🕺
Swing music is a lot of fun to hear ! I have to plug the one contemporary Swing band I got into recently - Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. They are a class act ! Saw them live 5yrs ago and got to see them killin it up close. Their cover of Cab’s “Minnie The Moocher” is a hot one and there’s also “Mr Pinstripe Suit” with it’s cool video.
The Brian Setzer Orchestra is pretty good too! (Five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones, piano, bass, drums, and one very electric guitar, )
Yep, it's fun seeing the past. When folks say they aren't a fan of history it's a sure thing there is something from the past they will be interested in. I've watched this performance many times now & it still gets me. I believe this is from the 40's because I've seen a longer version of this performance & the crowd gets up to dance & all the men are in uniform from WWII.
I love Cab Calloway and the Nicholas brothers 😊
They were wearing Tuxedoes
It's not just the dancers - everyone in the audience is dressed to the nines and looking fantastic. Of course, this is the movies, so it's not supposed to be like every day, but this was a different time, when people did dress to look their best when they went out to have a good time.
Since you're listening to music from this era I recommend Ella Fitzgerald. She was an excellent singer known as 'The Queen Of Jazz' and 'First Lady Of Soul'. Names she very much deserved as her voice is absolutely incredible.
I recommend her version of Over the Rainbow. Although I could only find an audio video version for that one. If you want a actual video to react to I recommend looking up some of her performances on The Ed Sullivan Show. Some of my favorites performances are Thanks For The Memory, I'm Old Fashioned, S'Wonderful, Hotta Chocolatta, and It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing).
Ps. Hilariously my Lupus fogged mind got this song and another one mixed up, so initially I was confused when they started singing. The name of the other song is Jump, Jive, an' Wail. 😆
It's a Lupus day look over me. I haven't tried to drink my paint water yet. I'm counting it as a win. 😂
I love "Minnie The Moocher by Cab Calloway. Hidey Hidey Hidey Hi.. Hodey Hodey Hodey Ho!!
My mom told me that she seen the Nicolas Brothers live at the Apollo Theater. My grandfather (her dad) took her to see them when she was a kid. She said to see them do this live, is incredibly. This scene here is from a movie called "Stormy Weather". The Nicolas Brothers did one rehearsal, and then shot the entire dance scene in only one take. Nice reaction. 😊
This is 100% entertainment value. The Nicholas Brothers were the BEST specialty act Hollywood ever had.
Cab Calloway and the Nicholas Brothers were big favorites in the 30s, 40s, and 50s.
Dude, you added an entire extra level of JOY to this - and i didn't think that was possible~!...:-) Thanks for some Contagious-Joyfulness~!
This was an AMAZING performance by the Nicolas Brothers ..I read they did this in ONE take 😊
The brothers only 5 '4" and 5'2". They were NOT twins. They were 7 years ago in age. 1904, 1921.Calloway performs the song with his orchestra and the Nicholas Brothers in the 1943 MUSICAL MOVIE Stormy Weather.
It's fun watching folks' first-time reactions to the Nicholas Brothers and how they're amazed at the start of their dance here and knowing that there's so much more and amazing to come.
The proper term for Cab Calloway was " band leader" . He was from the big band era , which produced some really great music . Other famous band leaders from that era were Glen Miller , Benny Goodman , Artie Shaw , Jimmy Dorsey , Tommy Dorsey , Duke Ellington , and Count Basie .Back in the mid 60's when I used to " play the ponies " a bit , I would often see Cab Calloway around the $100 .00 window in the clubhouse at Aqueduct and Belmont racetracks in New York . I won't say we were friends , we were just nodding acquaintances . i would say " Hi Cab " and he would say " Hi Rod " ..He was retired then , probably in his late 60's , but he was still elegantly dressed and groomed . He was a true gentleman . There is a horse race now , at Aqueduct I think ,named the Cab Calloway Stakes .Cab's most famous song is "Minnie the Moocher " .
This routine always bring me joy! However, Your reaction greatly multiplied that joy! Amazing talent all around! Thank you!
You are absolutely right about ball room dancing. The swing and hot music and early rock n' roll dancing is an off-shot of ball room dancing!!
After watching this originally, I fell down a Nicholas Brothers rabbit hole and there are so many great dance performances by them. They were incredible.
Harold and Fayard Nicholas were the best tap dance duo of all time. This was all done in one take during the movie stormy weather.
P.s. No missed steps.
Your excitement throughout the video was priceless.
Best reaction I have ever seen to ANYTHING!!
Just clicked that subscribe button 😊
Hi reaction is precious! Glad to see someone really appreciate the history of big band music.
Now that's when you had to have TRUE Takent. MR. Cab, the band and the amazing Nicholas Brothers ❤
Cab was the first black artist to sell more than a million records. The most influential bandleader of his day.
this was filmed in one take and with no rehearsal if I remember correctly. the nicholas brothers were self taught.
Also I think I heard they taught Janet Jackson to dance for a video.
1943 Film Stormy Weather . The Nicolas Brothers. I was lucky enough to see a Tap Extravaganza in the 1980 s put on by the great Gregory Hines featuring a teenage Savion Glover and a large crowd of the best living Tap dancers including surviving Nicolas Brothers. Amazing show ☮️
I believe I watched this 5 or 6 times in a row the very first time I saw this clip. Amazing!
The band knew how to duck when those legs came flying near their heads.
Cab Calloway was the King of Scat, the precursor of Rap. He kept the people jumping during the Great Depression and World War II.
Savion Glover, Gregory Hines...........
Your reactions are so fun. This was a great one!
And I love love love tap dancing which I do and need to get back to it!
The scene was the movie "Stormy Weather," made in 1943. Orchestra leader is Cab Calloway. 8:11 I agree, "OUCH!." I'm sure that grand piano had to be tuned up again after this routine! But this was an MGM movie so they had plenty of bread, moolah, lettuce, cash to get er done. Here's the next scene in the film. Great dancing! ruclips.net/video/1ooDpD3jvxQ/видео.html
This was amazing stuff! I watch it over and over!
A walk into the earlier days will take you places you can't imagine.
I also recommend the Blues Brother movie. It starred Dan Akroyd and Jim Belushi trying to raise money to save the orphanage they were raised in by a nun. So they decided to get cash by robbing a bank truck. It also had a lot of stars you might recognize. Cab Calloway was in it, too.
Some other clips to see: Cab Calloway - Minnie the Moocher, and the young Nicholas Brothers - Lucky Number, and Glenn Miller - Chattanooga Choo Choo from Sun Valley Serenade, which has the young Nicholas Brothers dancing at the end.
WOW !!!...Everybody went wild when Michael Jackson did his Moonwalk I believe in the 90s, and these guys danced on the rest of the palnets in the 40s.....AMAZING !!
This movie, Stormy Weather, was made in 1943
Cab Calloway was "dah bomb" in the 1940s. If you liked this, you should check Cab Calloway singing "Minnie the Moocher," while another great performance by the Nicholas Brothers is "The Nicholas Brothers and Dorothy Dandridge - "Chattanooga Choo Choo"
I'm new here and this is groovy thank you for sharing I think your channel is awesome I have a lot of messages for you throughout your channel shadow
If you haven't seen the movie The Blues Brothers you can see Cab Calloway, John Belushi *and* Dan Akroid in some of the funniest scenes you've ever seen. :D
If you look closely, you can see that they put a board on the piano (and the tables) to protect the surfaces. 🙂 (There's also a colorized version of that clip out there, btw.)
This scene was from a movie in 1943.
0:17 When you say "So guys I'm gonna be checkin' this out for the first time" you say that so fast that you sound like Cab Calloway!
It's hard from this distance for even people of my age to realize how much of superstar Cab Callaway was.
Swing Band music and Hot Music is a form of New Orleans Jazz, revved up;
Yes Tap Dancing but they were very acrobatic and created, yes Flash Dancing! Their style was individual and was called Flash Dancing at the time. RIP Patrick Swayze.
Now that is a cardio workout.
I love tap dancing. You should check out Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin, Fred Astair Gene Kelly
Since you want to watch it again, try to find that longer clip, it shows the audience dancing at the end.
Glenn Miller “In the Mood” great music
I'd like to see YOU dance in a tux, Ace! 😎
The jivevwas a dance back then
Not twins, they were 4 years apart
Fred Astaire said this was the best dance route ever filmed.
They must have been very out of breathe after that performance!
It was so, so cool to see you getting into that music and video! You need to take a look at the movie, *_The Cotton Club,_* starring Richard Gere and Gregory Hines, a masterful tap dancer. You got a sub from me.
Even Fred Astaire named them as the best dancers EVER. That was not a mis-step. It is tap dancing. This generation don't understand performance flair. A lot of the movements are creative style and flair. I'm glad you digged their video. They influenced MJ, Janet, Gregory Hines, Paula Abdul, and many others.
There are two great cartoons featuring Cab Calloway and Betty Boop! Please watch.
there's a colorized version of his.
The Nicholas Brothers did not misstep. 😊
There IS a color version of this!
People in the 30s and 40s had style. Even though they were poor, they had respect. On Saturday and Sunday morning, they dressed up to experience an evening. They had class, not grunge.
That so called mishap was part of routine
I enjoyed your reaction. You have a nice personality, a great smile, and you part your teeth in the middle just like me!
CLASSIC!!!! O LOVED THIS😊
I highly encourage you to spend time watching the old movies of the forties and fifties. It will help with old customs faster then any history book or class ever will. It will also give you a jumping off point for old music, mysteries, dramas, and customs. Some of which we are better off having in our history, the further back the better.
There's no misstep with the Nicholas Brothers. I think the era was in the early 1940s.
Correct, Swing .
I highly encourage you to spend time watching the old movies of the forties and fifties. It will help with old customs faster then any history book or class ever will.
You are the first reactor that i have seen actually notice that one band member giving his head a little more clearance. He really did not trust then not to kick him in the head. Hilarious.
I know I'm three days out on this but I would guess that Michael was a big fan of theirs and picked up some moves by trying some of theirs.

It's so funny watching you youngsters watch REAL talent. The Nicholas Brothers were the standard for African American tap dancers of the 30s and 40s. Everyone watches their splits, but watch their hands. Their hands communicate more than their hands. Yes, their splits were muscles memory and talent, but their hands showed their feelings. Unfortunately, later in life they had several hip replacements, but that did not stop their love of dancing performance!!!
Great reaction
So much music history lost. Glad you found some of it. Scat is amazing. People used to make ACTUAL music. My parents danced to this and brought me up on big band music. Everybody danced this way in the nightclubs and speakeasies.
You said "ouch"
Everybody here is saying one take. I think it's two. There is a cut just before they get to the grand staircase. This stuff is ancient, btw. Over eighty years ago.
