I'm surprised the money laundering topic wasn't a bigger part of the 'rings of power' discussion. Peter Jackson's production actually had blacksmiths making armour weapons and set designers building not just cgi.
Godzilla Minus One... $11 million budget. (Initially reported as 15 million) Yes, the production crew on that movie was probably underpaid but they still voluntarily took the job. I'm not willing to claim "money laundering" for a lot of what Hollywood does. But they are an example of what happens to organizations that have no concern over costs. They can end up spending a million dollars doing what they could get done for a thousand.
@@ThubanDraconis true
@ThubanDraconis
You may not but there are plenty that would. Especially considering the color that Hollywood has always been.

I never got to finish that show, but at least the first couple of episodes really looked like a movie, even if the script and performances were forgettable. I have to give them that. Maybe it was just because Juan Antonio Bayona was behind the camera, so he made the most out of it and treated it like any of his movies, which always look fantastic... I don't know. What I don't understand about The Acolyte is how for such a big budget show they decided to give Leslye Headland the first two episodes to direct (which are the most important ones to set the tone and hook the audience), since she has little experience as a director and what she had directed in the past was totally unremarkable and completely by the book. Something any mediocre film student could have directed themselve. I haven't seen The Acolyte (and not planning to) but by what I've seen in RUclips it looks as if they could've made it look WAY better, using those same soundstages, had they hired proper directors.
It was to a degree, but the writing, the direction and the casting were so bad that they were the most discussed.
Money laundering... you're not supposed to say the quiet part out loud.
you spent WASTING wrong.

It looks more like tax evasion for me, massively exaggerate the cost of production, hide there the money went with some creative accounting. And with disney size, good luck to anyone trying to find heads of tails of that money, if anybody even try in the first place.
That’s not how the Truth works.
@@tjjordan4207 Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life. If you know the Truth, the Truth will set you free.
I said this last year about Disney. 300 million dollar budgets, yet it looks like a CW series once it releases in theaters. Where is the money going? The budgets keep getting higher, and the quality keeps dropping. Dune 2 was around 200 million and visually looked like a piece of art. The fact that they are releasing movie after movie and series after series still losing money is crazy. How are the share holders not blowing a gasket? Someone said Disney is on its way to becoming a zombie company a few years ago, and now I'm starting to think it's true. It's a black rock funded propaganda machine.
Unfortunately with Index investing the shareholders are millions of people. You might be investing in a work pension being investing in Disney without knowing about it. This is why the share price can be high but the company is doing terrible. However, the market does in the end win so Disney will fall but it could be years.
Spot on Brandon. That’s the game, it’s not just Disney it’s happening to many companies, they’re becoming zombies, tied to a perpetual borrowing scheme where DEI/ESG propaganda is part of the terms and conditions. Barely turning a profit (or not turning one at all) to keep the cycle going. These people aren’t stupid. They know this stuff won’t turn a profit. So why do they make it? Who or what is legally forcing them? The borrower is slave to the lender, and when the lender is a big bank working with the government to push an agenda on society, the borrowers (meaning companies) must do what they say.
Godzilla minus one: they did something excellent with 15 millions. Talent has nothin to do with money...
Oy! Stop noticing!
Bingo. Do not forget that Disney has destroyed almost every IP they have obtained. This is on purpose to destroy and demoralize western culture and Europeans respectively.
Remember that this show is almost as expensive as Blade Runner: 2049 and Dune 2. And knowing Disney, we would know in the future that it costs more than that.
I'm big on investing and I'm still baffled anyone buys Disney stock. They actively lie to their shareholders when it's clear as day the company is tanking and burning cash on ridiculous things that won't have an ROI.
And honestly money laundering or SOMETHING illegal is probably going on. It just doesn't make sense at this point. Kathleen has been destroying this property for years now, their live action movie division is a complete joke and each release fails harder than the last. Disney+ doesn't make anyt profit as Disney desperately tries to compete in the streaming wars....
@@Livvvid SOMETHING has to be going on, SOMETHING. This shit can't be right, it has to be some sort of scheme. I wouldn't be surprised if Headland just has dirt on people from her Weinstein days and is basically blackmailing people to get her and her people paid haha. I'm not even a conspiratorial person, but there's some type of conspiracy happening.

A lot of people have their heads in the sand about this, but if you don't see the money up there on screen, it's because it never made it.
I’m starting to think the money laundering conspiracy is real.
Hollywood has had crooked accounting for decades. Being this obvious is just the studios getting sloppy.
It makes you wonder how often it happens. I know most of Steven Segals crappy movies had a lot to do with being funded by mafia connections. I always wondered how he had so many dumb movies then I seen a video discussing that stuff. It makes sense for so many things now.
I don't even think we have to go as far as thinking it is a money laundering conspiracy. I have suspected, for a couple of years now, that Disney generally but Lucasfilm especially, have been getting creative with ways to shift concerningly massive marketing costs between projects. This would be due to their apparent strategy of doing whatever it takes to project an image of success as a marketing strategy. I am not an accounting expert by any stretch, but if I had to guess, they keep it legitimate enough for auditors by using some kind of periodization assignment in the books. It does seem like malfeasance to the shareholders though, whose positions might change drastically if they were aware of it.
It’s the deliberate decimation of popular culture, the diminishing and infantilization of the modern day mythos and stories we share amongst one another, to dull our capacity to convey, communicate and grasp advanced concepts, intricate themes or abstract ideas, in particular ‘They’ want to muddle with our ability to translate these sorts of things to future generations. This is how cowards wage ‘war,’ the easiest way to destroy a Man (Peoples), is to distort and degrade the stories they share, if you do this you would have demolished the heart of them as a whole.
180 million... that's 12 Godzilla -1's.

excellent movie godzilla minus one
You could make a Godzilla -1 and have 6 million left over..............per episode!
Godzilla -1 budget?
Closer to $11 million. For the whole movie. It won an Academy Award For Visual Effects.
Make it make sense if it isnt money laundering!!
This HAS to be a money laundering scheme for the ones involved! This is "Springtime for H1tler" from The Producers! There are millions of dollars stashed in Swiss banks!
the next musical number will be Springtime for Palpatine.

Underrated comment. Great Producers reference. 👏🏽
Most of the star wars Disney shows and movies are blatant money laundering
Rings of Power definitely is more sus for budget than Crapolyte
You can set where they put their money in a few shots.
At least that can be partly explained by the bribe they had to pay to Tolkien's estate. Beside that, Amazon has a lot of experience in wasting money by having it's side projects developed by incompetent fools. Just look at it's games division; not to mention Twitch...
@@sadface7457 Yeah. As much as that show sucked, it looked expensive most of the time. At least during the first 3-4 episodes, which are the ones I forced myself to sit through... Definitely money laundering. Every single movie and tv show should have an itemized audit done to show where the money went and who got paid what.
Finally a logical explanation for shows like this
This HAS to be a money laundering scheme for the ones involved! This is "Springtime for H1tler" from The Producers! There are millions of dollars stashed in Swiss banks!
Sweet baby money thats for sure
Say it loud enough they have to defend themselves!
It is so familiar, in my country there are city halls that get a lot of money from mines that give it to the cities closer to where they operate. They make multi-million projects but you see them and they are so simple, the money goes to the top authorities.
Would not be surprised if a lot of these clearly over-bloated budgets for terrible TV shows or movies are actually cover-ups for tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars being "cleaned".
I was thinking its a pay off for silence no way the top dogs at disney thought this was gonna turn a profit.
$180,000,000 / (8 episodes* 30 minutes per episode) = $ 750,000 / minute = $12,500 / second
This honestly makes me question KK and Headland's association in the first place. We know full well that Headland was the personal assistant to Harvey Weinstein but what was KK doing during that time period? This makes me question if this was hush money or some other kind of pay off from KK to keep something else buried. Maybe something to do with her husband in fact. Why else would the sheer rampant price tag be allowed on this and where did it possibly go? I just can't see any other logical questions for it or how they burned that kind of money. KK has to have dirt on Hollywood and Headland has to have dirt on KK.
My theory Headland took a lot of evidence to protect her boss and have power when she left hence Harvey has a reduced sentence do to lack of evidence and no one has brought up headlands history even though most of the victims described her in detail. Then after KK’s numerous failures and being told not to hire anyone she hand picks headland, probably because she knows she has Harvey’s little black book which has names and deeds done by powerful people. So now they are practically untouchable.
You can make 2, TWO, Godzilla Minus One's for the cost of one 30 minute episode of the Acolyte. Let that sink in.
I would really like a Godzilla Minus One Sequel. Maybe not a direct sequel but a new Japanese Godzilla follow up with a similar budget. Seems like lean is the way to go now in this age.
Paranormal Activity when its budget bloated too much and put money into bad fake VFX became unprofitable and a money drain so.
i read an article that the director wanted 15 million to make godzilla but got 9 million
@@michaelotoole1807 too high budget, studios will have too much leeway and won’t feel pressured to hire competent staff. Too low budget and the people will suffer. The laundering of one, the laundering of two, the laundering of many.
Been saying this awhile now, it's the only explanation st this point for Disney show runners running up the tabs.
Inflated budgets are 100% overhead to Disney, meaning Disney is allowed to bill 100% of their overhead to EACH production budget. Crazy.
The budget is too high probably because of D.E.I consultants. There's an article going around saying that the Black Myth Wukong video game was almost extorted by DEI consultants asking for 7 million dollars.
DEI consultants and also DEI hires. If you hire an unqualified person based on their race, gender or sexuality, it's gonna take them twice as long and cost twice as much to do the job as a boring old middle aged white guy who's been in the business for thirty years.
@@jonyD143saw a video on that same report. It seems Sweet Baby Inc was trying to extort the developers from that game, which is the move they used with other developers and succeeded. It all started with the director of a game called Night in the Woods, he was extorted by his own wife and sister, to the point that the guy killed himself. His sister is the founder of Sweet Baby Inc.
Demons. They're demons man. @eduardopazhurtado3882
@@jonyD143 That and catering meals, events, extra staff (DEI is all dead weight), ... There are a million little expenditures.
$7 million for DEI is a LOT. I had no idea it was that big. In the big DEI cutbacks in different state schools, the DEI part was less than that. They're bigger institutions than a major movie, .... or are they? I guess maybe a Marvel movie is bigger than, for instance, Iowa State University.
AZ is annoying.
The only way to explain this is that someone is getting kickbacks
Disney/Star Wars has reduced itself to nothing more then supply without demand.
They're already digging new landfills to bury unsold merch..
I'm glad others are beginning to ask this. I've said it for about 5 years. But, hearing other people ask the questions and connect the dots is a huge 😊.

Lucasfilm, eating its own filth before its well deserved collapse.
My dad, looking at trailers for shows on his phone when it shows a trailer for the Acolyte
"That's a real pretty turd."
For instance horror werewolf masterpiece Dog Soldier’s cost 3.4 GBP. Still amazing and it was no CGI.. all real effects.
The Expanse....one of the best written and produced science fiction series was estimated to cost Amazon between $2 to $5 million per episode. Let THAT sink in.
Star Trek TOS had $800 per episode or so. They still came up with a chant that still gives me chills, from these children who were being manipulated by an alien. "Hail, hail, fire and snow. Call the angel we will go. Far Away for to see. Friendly angel come to me." not some nursery rhyme bullshit with harmonies!!
Excellent point.
I think TOS had more like $200-250K per episode for budget, but that was 1966 money which was 4x what today's is.
@@aylmer666 the show was canceled and then brought back. Initially they had budget that was so low that the crews wives made the costumes.
And you're not even factoring in opportunity cost. If Disney wanted, they could be getting a safe, tidy 3.9% return in an MMMF. Thats $7M a year.
We hear a lot about low interest DEI loans being used to subsidize failing media projects. But I wonder how big these loans are and how much lower the interest really is compared to the market rate? I can't imagine they are big enough to make up for hundreds of millions in losses. If they are, whoever funded the loans is never getting their money back. I think the Boomer bozos in charge of Hollywood just spent too much time on TikTok trying to understand the "youth market" and got a skewed view of what young people are really like and are willing to pay for. There is a lot of woke virtue-signalling online, but most of that is just so much hot air.
Headland must have serious dirt on some people.
It's a legitimate question with the quality of the product we have seen so far
It's definitely laundering money. They filmed this at the theme park.
How else is she going to get her wife paid. Can’t be a home maker they’re the devil gotta get her a pay check one way or another lol
"Les-be honest about this show" - Eric improvising better dialogue than a $180m Disney project.
For reference, a typical CW Arrowverse episode costs $2 million. And those sets were pretty nice looking. So yeah, Acolyte costing $20 million per episode is optimistically mismanagement, or straight up theft.
Take “Scary Movie” for example, $19 million budget, $278 Million Box Office. I understand it’s comparing apples and oranges but the budget is insane for a show such as The Acolyte.
The power of 1, the power of 2, the power of millionnnnsssssss
Somebody is definitely skimming a ton of money somewhere because it’s clear only a tiny fraction of that amount went to the production budget.
i think youre really onto something, we need to see the budget breakdown of this show
Az by himself = 8/10
Rippa by himself = 8/10
Az + Rippa = 16/10
Godzilla Minus Zero was freaking 15M USD to make.
These guys crack me up ha ha
Keep in mind that Godzilla Minus One had a budget of $15 million. How the fck does the Acolyte cost $180 million?
Great way to steal from the shareholders if it's money laundering
They better be laundering money cause there's no way this garbage cost as much as it does.
Dont forget, you have to consider how many of these "props" have just been repurposed from other movies/shows. Just with a new coat of paint (which certainly doesnt cost $21 million). So they are spending even less than "$1 or $2 million".
They have to be laundering money at this point.
Every actor and actress, no matter if a main, supporting, or extra had to be paid the same because equity
Do you seriously think they practice what they preached?
@@chronoshin8597 What??? Are you claiming that they are hypocrites? Lol.
A factor that needs to be considered: the entire show is definitely some sort of hush concession to the Director to keep quiet. She has a LOT of dirt on the industry, and can definitely see the media companies giving her lots of money and her own star wars TV show and funneling the money through the project.
The Acolyte is the final ruin for Star Wars.
Might as well, the only reason lucasfilms are creating crap shows like this.
"The Power of Moneyyyyyyyyyy": that is real meaning....
DVD Overlord rumour has it that Andor money was illegally used for Acolyte and that is the reason why Kennedy is not allowed to enter the studio building anymore and how Disney can finally get rid of her in October.
KK will leave in Ocotober?
Her contract ends and will not be renewed. She agreed to go, otherwise Disney will release the evidence of her crimes found on her computer. We will see if the rumour is true.

The "came with the phone" comment reminded me. Beginning of the year I saw a special for Disney+ for 8:55 $1 a month for the year so i picked it up. I keep wondering now how much of their subscriber base is from similar things and specials. Like how many people are actually paying $10 or whatever and not getting the hulu and ESPN bundle for the and price. Short version: i think the money they're getting from subs is even less than it looks like, my bet.
