Our song Dirty Water was used in a campaign to clean up what was one of the most polluted rivers in the nation. Today it is one of the cleanest. We are proud of that.

I remember escorting the first LNG tanker into Boston harbor after the 9/11 attacks. One guy was originally from Boston. He kept singing this song the WHOLE TIME!
Was in a college rock band 1967 in CT and played this song at a gig at Fisher Jr College, which overlooks the Charles River! What a high that was - love this song. At a memorable concert at Shea stadium, Rolling Stones the headliner, the Standells led off with this song. So good.

COOL. I went to Butera School Of Art at 111 Beacon, the other end of the block. The Fisher girl`s domitories were right across the street. We`d watch them iron their clothes before they put them on. Occasionally one girl would hang a balloon outside her window and it would promptly get popped because my buddy Peter never left home without his CO2 pellet pistol. One day we all sat sketching a plaster statue and he pulled out the pistol and blew the head off while the teacher was out of the room. Myrth-provoking it was.
Hell, these guys even make an appearance on the "Munsters" way back when. They played the Beatles song, 'I wanna hold your hand'. They did a good job, too.

They're singing about the frustrations of curfews that were so prevalent back in the 50's & 60's. when you dated a girl back then, especially if she was from a Catholic sorority house, the nuns always demanded you'd bring the girls back by 11:00 or 12:00 midnight, and no later than that. Boston supposedly had crime back in those days (to be fair, so did Detroit, especially after the riots of 1967.) and parents as well as authority figures were uptight about curfews in those days. That all changed with The Women's Liberation movement of the early 70's when women could stay out later past midnight if they wanted to. As for the "dirty water", Boston had a polluted river problem which was cleared up later on when anti-pollution activists made a campaign to clean up the river especially after 1969's fire in the Ohio State's river disaster. Today, Flint , Michigan would be known unfortunately for it's dirty, polluted water thanks to failure to clean up polluted and rusty water pipes. A corrupted Governor & a equally corrupted Mayor of Flint were charged with the dirty lakes in that situation. This song may be listed as "stereo", but it sounds like the regular mono version, since the song was recorded in mono in late 1965 by Ed Cobb, who wrote the song about being mugged in Boston. Ed was a former member of the 50's group the Four Preps, and he produced most of The Standells' Tower singles & albums. Ironically, the group didn't care much for "Dirty Water" when they first recorded it, with Standells' member Tony Valentino once remarking "Hey Eddie, my friends don't like the song!" "I told you it was a turkey song!" Once the song hit after nine months when they recorded it, it became a favorite.

I just now rediscovered this song, and I absolutely love it! I vaguely remember it being played on the radio when I was very young. And I now also know and appreciate why it's played by Boston sports teams following victories. There are MANY great songs that you will never hear unless you take time and search for them. I found this great song by perusing the list of one hit wonders listed on Wikipedia. There are a lot of one hit wonders that I know, but some others that I don't. What a great way of discovering "new" music or rediscovering music that I have long forgotten!
I haven't been to Boston since 2011, but it was probably my favourite trip that I ever took. It was for Father's Day and my Dad said it was his best Father's Day ever because we went to a Red Sox game and had the best time ever.

In addition, the amazing drumming- the synchopation between the BASS DRUM, and snare/ toms, and tambourine, is one of the most overlooked, and masterful drumming performances in American pop music of the 60's. The kick drum, and the relentless Telecaster guitar hook, leads this song!
