  • Hi!
Today we are making an easy and SIMPLE diy raised garden bed!!!!
If you are looking for some budget friendly ideas for the garden, This video is for you!!!!
So all together this bed cost under $5!
    Fence- $3
    Plastic -$1
    Pins - .12 ¢
    Landscape Fabric - .84¢
    Total Price we paid $4.96
I'm happy to break it down for you.
    COST BREAKDOWN
Fence (4ft tall)- $1 per foot
I used 3 feet of fencing which made the fence 3 by 4.
I cut that in half, which gave me two pieces of 3 by 2 ft pieces.
I put those two 3ft pieces together and created a 6 ft piece (circle) that was 2 ft high.
    This frame cost $3
Landscaping pins - $1 (that I actually bought at the end of last season for 25 cents a pack)
I used maybe half a pack so thats 12.5 cents
I did not buy liner I used plastic we already had but a box of black trash bags from the dollar store would be plenty enough.
Let's go ahead and count that dollar.
That would put us at $4.12 cents
The landscape fabric cost $12 for a 4x100 ft roll.
If we divide that 100 feet by 12 we understand that it's about .12 cents per foot.
I used 7 ft which equals 84 cents
    Fence- $3
    Plastic -$1
    Pins - .12 ¢
    Landscape Fabric - .84¢
    Total Price we paid $4.96
    ASSEMBLY:
    Here's what I did for a 6ft round bed-
3 feet of 4 ft fencing - cut in half, giving you 2 pieces of 3 ft fencing that is 2 ft high.
attached both pieces together to creat a circle.
    zip tied them together
secured the bottom to the ground with landscaping pins.
lined the inside with plastic. Trash bags, shower curtains or even plastic table cloths work great.
Cover the outside with landscape fabric!
    and that's it!!!!

My neighbour made a similar bed, which he planted with strawberries. To ensure that he got to eat some of them, he used an old umbrella, from which he had removed all but the outside 2" of fabric, as a form to support netting over them. A piece of piping buried in the middle of the bed, with the umbrella handle dropped in to it, netting stretched over & pegged to the bed frame with clothes pegs for easy access. The bees could get in, but the birds were barred.

Oh, and use CARDBOARD boxes instead of expensive plastic, to suppress weeds- then lay the blackest weed barrier, put some wood chips on top- You can find boxes anywhere pretty much- no stickers, no ink or not a lot of it- It works and water can go thru it- and the benefit is for the worms and the earth :) xox

Why not use cardboard instead of landscape fabric. The thing about the landscape fabric is it will eventually cause the ground to become compacted and nutrient deficient. If you use cardboard it will breakdown over time and yes a weed or two will eventually pop through but it will still be easier to maintain then nothing at all. It will also feed the worms underneath and biodegrade naturally. You can always lay another layer directly on top of everything again a couple seasons down the road and top it with mulch again and it will be like lasagna gardening. I live in zone 7b Tennessee and deal with the most invasive grasses. This is how i combat them. It's not and end all solution but it helps a lot.

Cardboard is a really great option for all the reasons you stated! We did use this method on different areas on our property, just not in this spot. Not having plastic in this area is already proving to be beneficial as I can already tell that there aren't as many mosquitoes. Thank you for chiming in!

@@ourfreedomsong I just happened on this vlog. For free cardboard find yourself some girl scouts. Yes Girl Scouts during cookie season. Ask them if you could have some of the empty cookie cases. They will, I'm certain gladly let you have them. As a scout leader of many years, I can tell you, I will burn what I can't give away in the fire pit. Our rural area doesn't have recycling and we have to get rid of those cardboard cases.

Great ideas!!! If you really want a good way to suppress grass/weeds and save some money…use cardboard!! Lay it out even over grass and put whatever dirt o mulching you want, cut holes in the cardboard for where you want plantings to go. Before you plant water the cardboard good…LOL Yeah water your cardboard and then start whatever you want. A garden bed, a pathway, anywhere you don’t want grass or weeds. It allows moisture to to flow through, it will keep the soil warm on those unexpected chilly nights, it will break down into the soil naturally providing nutrients to your friendly helpers, WORMS!!! I have had to replace my cardboard and redo s bed maybe every 3-4 years, but it depends on your weather and sun. I live in Upstate NY. I use cardboard everywhere 😂

Since you are building raised garden beds, then you can turn them into cold frames by making a roof with old windows or plexiglass as it will protect garden plants from snow and frost if you do it right. With a removable roof then you can practice crop rotation and have cold weather crops in winter.

Thank YOU and you are most welcome 💞💞 Wished you were my neighbor; we would have a lot of fun together!
P.S.: If you want "free" strawberry plants, scrape the seeds off your strawberries, put a sheet of toilet paper into a clear container with lid, soak the toilet paper, put seeds on, and put the container in a warm, sunny place making sure toilet paper is not drying out. Once the seeds are germinating and have a couple of leaves on, pot them up using tweezers. I've done this several times with store bought strawberries that I thought were absolutely delicious, so I would get different varieties than the ones found in my garden section.

I use this method too. It works well.
Where possible, I dig out 12" of dirt from the bottom & set aside on a tarp. I fill the dug out hole with semi rotten wood, old limbs & fat sticks to create a modified hugel bed bottom to retain moisture. I go higher with the wood to take up more space if possible. Then lay in leaves, pine needles & smaller sticks. I mix well rotted compost with the set aside dirt for the top. I find I get less settling that way & it cuts down on buying bagged products. Since raised beds tend to dry out quicker, it helps to have the hugel bottom & native soil in the bed. I've stopped using landscape fabric for lining & use a double cardboard liner.
I grow peas or beans around the exterior for camouflage.

Just a tip from a DYI gardener. There is a fabric you can purchase called Vevor driveway fabric. It allows for drainage but does not allow for weed growth. I am using this fabric to put in my driveway and garden paths and works like a charm without having to deal with weeds or standing water. I learned about it from a contractor who uses this stuff along for putting in weed free paths and driveways. It is also used commercially for putting in parking areas when a company does not want to deal with grading an area for water drainage. I have spoken with several other gardeners and they have told me this stuff is more durable than standard weed blocking fabric.

I use cheap rectangular shaped birdhouses, block off the entrance hole, glue a piece of skinny balsa wood tube shape up inside the house, for a perch, cut out the bottom and hang my DIY Bat house up at least 15 feet from the ground on a sunny side of the house. These little sweeties eat their weight of nasty biting bugs in one evening. I don’t have a mosquito problem anymore. I also put pots of lemon balm around sitting spaces because their strong scent does not appeal to biting bugs.
Hollywood gave bats a bad name, they are shy, only really want to sleep during the day and wake up at dusk to begin clearing your yard of nasty bugs,

Gotta say you have a very impressive smile. With your raised bed you might want to find some old stakes and place against the wall so it doesn't sag with the weight later .Not sure if you can get a citronella plant in US but over here in Australia we get so many mozzies in the summer. Some are so big I swear you could put a saddle on them. I have a couple of citronella plants near the front and back door . If you shake them around a bit every time you pass them the smell will deter the dreaded mozzies. Marigolds deter the snails and slugs more. Happy gardening.

Great set up! Since you used landscape fabric if you chose you could actually cut a small slit in it and plant seedlings into the sides. You garden bed could be a garden tower for small plants such as herbs and lettuces. Which would actually make a beautiful living wall. Also consider mulching the top of the bed to keep moisture in and weeds down. Pinestraw would work or other plants that you chop and drop on top from your garden. Another addition would be an inbed worm tower. All you have to do is get a good sized food grade platic bin with a lid such as a large coffee container or mayo jar drill holes and add some kitchen scrapes and dead leaves and bury it in the bed. The worms will come.

I'm planting red yarrow to keep the deer from eating my garden up marigolds as well and nasturtium to repel beetles since I have lots of trees around. So many different flowers that are edible and repel bugs and critters. 🙂 Good luck with yours and hope you finally get watermelon to grow for you.
