  • I love using Indian Almond leaves (aka Catappa leaves) because they release Tannins into the water. This mimics the bettas natural environment, lowers the pH, and makes Ammonia less toxic. Indian almond leaves are often described as ”the poor man’s water conditioner” due to their capacity of altering the water chemistry in an aquarium.

    Great video! I watched how you did this before using the hot water from the kettle into a jar. I used to just add the dry leaf to the tank but they took forever to release tannins. Now I have done your method and my once sick betta is doing even better. They are all doing well. I did not like the idea of boiling in a pot since I use them for cooking and didn't want anything in the water. So your method is the best idea. Thank you!

    Some information about this.
    -To make this work you should find good quality leaves otherwise it won't work as well. The extract is going to be less tinted and less useful.
    -You can put vonditioner to the water if you like but really using drinking water or just water is fine as chloramine just evaporates.
    -It can be stored approximately 1 week some say for months but is safer for a week

    Do you need to condition/de-chlorinate tap water before boiling it and adding it to the jar with the leaf?

    Will regular almond leafs do the same ? I have no access to the Indian variants. But I do own a few acres of common almond trees. I wanted to help the kids with their attempts at breeding golden bettas from crossing lucistic albino and red bettas.

    So tannins won’t hurt my betta? For example Can I just leave the leaves inside my tank all time or should it only be used for some occasions?

    Very nice and informative video.BTW I am from India and had like 13 trees in my backyard but we cut them because they used to shed thousands of leaves everyday and it was pain in the butt to collect them everyday !

    Hello! When you add the actual leaf to the tank how long do you leave it? Or do you let it decompose?

    • @CreativePetKeeping
      @CreativePetKeeping  6 лет назад

      I like to let it decompose but you can remove it after 24 hours too
