Indian Almond Leaves | The Secret to healthier Betta Fish

- I love using Indian Almond leaves (aka Catappa leaves) because they release Tannins into the water. This mimics the bettas natural environment, lowers the pH, and makes Ammonia less toxic. Indian almond leaves are often described as ”the poor man’s water conditioner” due to their capacity of altering the water chemistry in an aquarium.

Really appreciate how you are giving tips on how to make the most out of something the customers get for free from every shipping you do! That's very nice of you :) And even though it's just one leaf, there's so much benefit that comes out of it.

Dude I thought you hated jars...
I have a big Indian almond tree in front of my house, we call it"Talisay"tree here in the Philippines. its a common tree here.
Same nasa bakuran sa dagat namin
Same din samin. 2 pa nga sila kaya yung iba binigay ko sa mga kaibigan ko :)
So happy today that i got more than 50 almond leaves and at the same time helping my mom to clean my backyard. Fyi i have 3 almond tree at my backyard. Thank You for your tips
Btw. In Malaysia. Indian almond leaves tree everywhere so a just go and pick up. It's free lol
Troy Ling yess😂i hv two trees in front of my house😂
Lucky! I wish I could get them for free >_
Troy Ling luck you
Creative Pet Keeping but the tanins aren't that strong
i just came back from the backyard we have to trees every day you may find like at least 10 leaves on the ground, why don't you buy an IAL tree ?
Here in Malaysia, I can literally find these leaves by the roadside. But of course i prefer to purchase it from my friend who sells bettas.
Also here in the Philippines we can literally just pick some but we do it secretly because neighbors might think that we're picking garbage, also buying online is much cleaner and they are properly hand picked unlike when you just pick them on the roadside who knows if it was already stepped on or covered with dust and nasty stuffs.
Lucky u!! I live in malaysia but had no idea where i can get em outdoors lol
Same here in Burma
@@littledoopsie pantai banyak. Semua pantai ada
@@rhyanlumilay6317 why would it be a problem if you’re picking up garbage?
I always used Indian almond leaves to stimulate my betta fishes to breed. I had been using this for 2 decades now, We have plenty of Indian almond trees here in our place by the way, I live in the Philippines and we have unlimited supplies of Indian almond leaves we just pick it for Free
Ilang days ba dapat palitang yung IAL paps?
Great video! I watched how you did this before using the hot water from the kettle into a jar. I used to just add the dry leaf to the tank but they took forever to release tannins. Now I have done your method and my once sick betta is doing even better. They are all doing well. I did not like the idea of boiling in a pot since I use them for cooking and didn't want anything in the water. So your method is the best idea. Thank you!
I'm glad to hear that your betta is doing better ^_^
It is mostly found in coastal areas here in the Philippines especially in beaches! We call it "talisay" locally.
I love your videos!
We're living in a City in Philippines called Talisay,, located in Central Negros Province. However, it's really difficult to find talisay tree here....
I am from India, Kolkata. I have so many of this trees in my locality. Sheding hundreds of leaves every day. They produce a nut. This is known an "Kaath Badaam" in my language. No body knows the benefits of its leaves. It is a very nice looking tree. The leave gets red before falling.
I wish I lived in a country where they grew everywhere.. I would not have to buy them from overseas >_
Me too
in Chennai there were more almond trees ..were leaves are wasting down here ....

I had an indian almond tree, and never knew about this!
In so lucky, we have Indian almond leaves in our frontyard and you can see these trees every where in the philippines, you can just get that for free
For those who didnt know what's the tagalog of indian almond tree/leaves it was called *TALISAI/TALISAY*
Cattapa also
I've been putting leaves in my tank but they break down and leave debris on the substrate and plants. I like your method better. Thanks for the tips!
I love my IALs! My betta had a mishap with a net during a tank rearrangement and lost a chunk of his tail. I've been changing his water every other day for two weeks and have been using IALs for the past week. The first week he had maybe 1-2mm of new growth without the IAL but in this past week he has had 14-15mm of growth to his tail. It has really shown to be a great an necessary item to help heal him
Thank you for your helpful video, much appreciated. I have a question though, what will be the shelf life of the extracted Tanins in the bottle?
Lucky in indonesia, it's pretty muh everywhere 😂 i basically just picking the leaves on the streets nearby for free. In indonesia we call it 'ketapang' and it really help betta fish
I live in Hong Kong and I just pick it from park in city for free. Indonesia is good place for keeping betta fish because of suitable weather!
ohh thank you for sharing! I was boiling but never let it sit. will try that next time!
This really helped my betta in beating off ich and recovering from fin rot. It makes the fish happier also and less stressed out. We have 2 IAL trees at the back of our house, I really like to use this for my betta aquarium!🖒
Hi Gail, I was just wondering, do you wait for dry leaves to fall or have you ever dried a fresh leaf yourself?
@@mzak8992 Hi there, indian almond trees are very very common here so I just pick up fallen leaves. I think either way is fine.
Thank you for a very succinct to the point video. You answered ALL of my "prepared" questions before I had to ask!
I heard from a betta breeder that you can maximize the tannin extraction by grinding up the leaf in food processor (roughly to loose tea size) and placing them in empty tea bags.
i orderd some offline and got them yesterday i am part of a number of groups for betta fish on fb so i lernt of them from there im glad i got them and they will help my boy with his fin growth since his fins are still growing
How long can you keep the concentrated almond leave water?
Nicole P no idea for me. I tried once to pour a lot, but in three days is gone :(
Says right in the video a few months.
I have 3 Bettas rn and thank God we have Indian almond leaves tree in our backyard
Me and my husband have a few community tanks with a Betta in them, would the leaf hurt the fish other than a Betta breed?
I was told boiling water ruin the actual tannins from the leaf. It’s suggested to just sit in regular room temperature water
Do you use water conditioning to the water with the leaf or after you're done?
Nah as far as i know not really. Tha boiling thing may make your leave less effective but the stained extract is just the same as far you got goid quality leaves
@@cloudstrife8596 you can if you like but just using normal water too fo the trick as chloramine evaporates with boiling thing.
Fresh water and adding alot of indian almond leaves will keep your betta happy. I havent change my aquarium for almost a year now and my netta is still active. IAL ain't no joke.
Thanks for the help! I finally got around to doing this! ( well, I have not yet added to my jars)
Nice information i never knew that much benefit of almond leaf i will get it by tomorrow for my betta tank... Thanks for sharing that information
After adding IAL algae problem comes up what to do?
What a great idea.
Thank you. Going to to try this out tomorrow.
Can I add aquarium salt with the tannins to treat fin rot?
the way you say "almond" is adorable!
From India lv u ❤
Thank you for sharing knowledge about this leaf.very educated..
Should we boil IAL water ?
wow.. thankyou so much for this information...
@Creative Pet Keeping
If we put boiling water like this. The vitamins from the leaves did not die? Just asking but im doing it already.
No buddy, vitamins are not that easy to kill...boiling would kill extra fungus, bacteria and extract the tannins from leaves.
i didn't know that till i started to pet bettas 😂😂😂 .. hi im a fan! love your channel, soo much to name my baby after you 😙😙😙 more power!
Most breeders keep all Bettas in jars, or small container. I use jars right now, but I hope to get larger jars to keep them in instead of the smaller ones. Larger jars are okay to keep them in for as long as your want as long as your doing daily water changes
I premake jugs of water too , with my salt , leaves , and conditioner so when i change water it’s all right there 😇🙏 blessings
Do you use the conditioner after or before?
Some information about this.
-To make this work you should find good quality leaves otherwise it won't work as well. The extract is going to be less tinted and less useful.
-You can put vonditioner to the water if you like but really using drinking water or just water is fine as chloramine just evaporates.
-It can be stored approximately 1 week some say for months but is safer for a week
Should the boiled water be treated with Prime, prior to boiling?
Should the tannin water be stored in the fridge when not using?
Also, how much of the tannin water would be ideal for a 5 gallon tank (1 male betta)?
Thanks!:) 🐠
Hi there 🤗 did you happen to get an answer for these questions? I had the same exact questions in my mind 😅
From what I saw in another video you can dechlorinate the water with prime and do this. Hope it helps, peace.
My bowl is 2.5-3 gallon.
I have a full moon red betta. Its tail is getting ruined slowly and it is not using its left small fin.
Should I put an Indian Almond Leaf directly into it ?
Mine is taller than 2 story building, and it has a very strong coloration in the water and I ferment the leaves
For everyone who doesnt want to do the process of getting tannins, theres already a pre made one called BETTA SPA on Amazon. Betta breeders use it instead of putting almond leaves on their tanks and making a mess. Ive also been using it for a long time and works really well. It already has a built in measurement. Check out BETTA SPA on Amazon
IALs arent messy, I have left mine in for 10 days with no issues. And Betta Spa is an extremely weak substitute for IALs. Better just to buy the leaves for less $ and get more product that you know is 100% safe
Hi, I have a question regarding making my own extract. I understand that you can keep it out of the fridge but mine is starting to develop a cottonlike substance at the bottom after about a week. Is it still safe to put in my Betta and Betta fry tank?
i did this with a good amount of almond leaves that I bought on ebay, but i didn't get much tannins from it. the water wasnt very dark, and i used boiling water :// Is there a specific seller that i should buy these from?
I put 5 of them in my 40 breeder, and it barely changed the water color, is that normal? I boiled one leaf in a quart of water and cooled it down poured some in, that worked water was yellow. But the other 5 that are in a mesh bag haven't really affected the water, its been a week. HELP!! should I boil more? I have one sick betta with white on her head, at bottom of tank, barely eating. any advice appreciated.
Great video. Wanted to know how long can we keep the katapa leaf in the fish tank ? I’ve a 6 gallon betta tank with a Hillstream Loach.
I keep small piece of indian almond leaf in my fish tank. He loves it. I replace it every time the snail finishes eating most of it.
So I treat tap water then boil it and make the tannin mixture?
How do you store it? Do I have to refrigerate it?
You have amazing pretty beta fish keep up the great work i wish you lived close i would buy your fish for sure
do you store the tannin jar with the lid on? Or do you keep it open top?
So do you refrigerate the tea.or just cap it? How long is it good?
Not sure I did it right. I have a big leaf, put it in a smaller container than the one you have, and put boiling water in. It’s cooled for more than 24 hours and it’s the same color as the water you have your fish in?
I have a five gallon tank. If I just wanted to put peices of almond leaf into the tank, how big of a piece would I use and how often should I switch it Out?
I put some of the IAL water and i checked on my betta there were some weird brown things on her body. If u know what it is please tell me. Help will be appreciated
What are the different types of betta splendens fish??? Please give me a complete list.....
How many days can we store Indian almond leaves water ?
A very very very long time
So could I just add an Indian Almond leave or half of one into the filter area that seems to have a lot of wasted room for 3.7 gallon tank that my betta is in? Straight into the tank or boil them first then put it in there?
Thanks for sharing. Following your advice.
Hi! Do you condition the ial water before putting it in the tank?
Are they good for espei rasboras too ! And for flame tetras ? My female bettas live with these other fish of these two species . Will it make their tank look like filled of ice tea ? I just ordered some from amazon . I read it will help to make the ph lower .
Do i just use tap water for the boiled hot water?
Can you please make a tutorial on shipping Betta fish
Hi, how long you keep that water, with the almond leaf..? and can you just add water over and over,?
Hey...
how long can we keep this tannin water?
Would it be possible to cure an early stage of fin rot with these leaves? My boy seemed to have hurt his fin a tiny bit. I'm worried that it might now be prone for infection
Pi Parbuckles IAL has antibacterial properties, so it should help. ^^
Pi Parbuckles If not, doing water changes most often than usual will clear it up in no time.
Does the mixture need to be refrigerated? I heard you mentiion that it lasts for months, so you're saying it doesn't go bad?
Were should you store the contener
Hi, Can please advise how often water should be changed if using IAL in Betta tank? Thank you. Cheers
Can the Indian Almond leaves tannins spoils?
is it possible to add too much of the tannin extract?
It would have to be very very highly condensed and concentrated but .. from what I am aware of ..the bettas in the wild are in water with many leaves and the water is quite dark. Ive put multiple leaves in on 5 gal until the water was orange-brown and my fish loved it.
Did you add dechlorinator to the water before you boiled it?
@creativepetkeeping how much tanin do I add for 5 gallon aquarium. My betta is exhibiting early signs of fin rot/ fin fraying. I plan to do water changes daily as well. Thank you
Hi, do you know when should i put my new beta to my new blackwater setup?
Does IAL naturally have oil? When I boil it and let it cool down, I noticed a layer of film on top of the water. I washed the pot before I use it to boil IAL
Hi; I have a question, can i stock my little extract for one week only, in purified drinking water in room temp?
Can you give a link which company you use ? its bunch of them on amazon ,which one you use it.I did that with the leaves and its not even close to that ,its not dark like yours in the jar .
thank you for making this! do you have to add conditioner to the indian almond leaves before dumping the water into a beta tank?
I have never had great luck with bettas. I put one in my new 120 gallon. He HATED it. I put him in a jar with an IAL(first time using), a small live plant and some rock. He is thriving now! I was sad he didn't like the big huge tank (friendly tank). But the jar is a decent size so I don't feel too bad
maybe, he was to scared in such a big place, especially if he came from a cup. Cause no betta should be put in something less than 5 gallons, so maybe u can try that.
Hi! For how long can i keep/stock the tannins in a bottle? Thank you!
Do you need to condition/de-chlorinate tap water before boiling it and adding it to the jar with the leaf?
I'd like to know the answer to Your question also .wish there was a reply.
Will regular almond leafs do the same ? I have no access to the Indian variants. But I do own a few acres of common almond trees. I wanted to help the kids with their attempts at breeding golden bettas from crossing lucistic albino and red bettas.
How long can i keep that indian leaves extract?
Have you tried the indian leaf tea bags?
Hi, I have a doubt can I directly put the leaves in the water
So tannins won’t hurt my betta? For example Can I just leave the leaves inside my tank all time or should it only be used for some occasions?
Awesome! Wasn't late today!!
Do you have to condition the water before you boil it?
There is any problem in boil almond life for betta
Very nice and informative video.BTW I am from India and had like 13 trees in my backyard but we cut them because they used to shed thousands of leaves everyday and it was pain in the butt to collect them everyday !
How many days we can use the same leaf?
Hello! When you add the actual leaf to the tank how long do you leave it? Or do you let it decompose?
I like to let it decompose but you can remove it after 24 hours too
My betta has fin rot/is fin biting..do u recommend epsom salt bath?
your fish are beautiful!
What is the benefits of adding this
Hi, do you need to add neutralizer (Chlorine Terminator) in your water if you have this indian almond leave? And other chemicals like Angel Drops/Dymax/AquaZonic
Yes, I used Prime and now I use the Fritz water conditioner
@@CreativePetKeeping Thank you so much for the reply. God Bless! And good luck :D
Cool video. Love your bettas.
Thanks!
Do you have to put in any water conditioner to the water before boiling it?
Also how much water should you use per leaf? And how long can you keep the IAL water?
