The really interesting part is that the cyclist was keeping up with traffic when the motorist crowded next to him. Reason he couldn't complete his pass was that there was no place to go. I had a driver pull up behind me when I was riding a few feet off the bumper of the car in front of me honking and screaming at me... then he started bumping into me from behind. My rack and bag were all that kept him from wrecking me. He pushed up next to me at the next light and went for a gun and I turned
Please explain the difference between where a cyclist should ride and a whee a car should drive in these circumstances, the official line first, followed by yours if it is different from the New Zealand Road Code advise and the advise of cycling instructors.
The difference between cyclists and motorists in both the UK and the US is that cyclists (and rollerbladers, horses, scooter riders) have a right to the public roadways. Motorists are given the PRIVILEGE to drive via a revocable license, and motorists must carry insurance because their method of transport is inherently far riskier than a bicycle. They must pay registration fees because driving is once again a privilege, and one 2000-lb subcompact does the road damage of 10 bicycles.
well i feel for yar sometime i hold back and some gumbar drives in blind spots and or ocupied lanes you may need too own the lane next time in sted of leting carss by thou i havnt riden for a long time reply tell where is thi and how far do you rang too
Just to make it clear for some blind viewers... The car in the video did not overtake the cyclist, because there is a car in front of the cyclist at the same speed or slower then the cyclist. The driver tried to occupy the same space in the line as the cyclist. For that to happen we need a new set of rules of physics.
It's a judgment call: how big or small does that gap between cars have to be before our cyclist moves over towards the curb? As I say below, between 0:26 and 0:36 is such a long gap between parked cars.
As a cyclist this sort of scenario is so annoying. Its fairly congested, as an equal road user you're safely keeping up with traffic with a car a safe distance ahead, yet simply because you are on a bike Mr Ford will get the overriding urge to overtake you even though its not needed, potentially unsafe and there is nothing to gain.
There is a difference between having the right to be on the road and driving aggressively and violating other peoples' rights to be on the road. This motorist aggressively drove closely to the cyclist while hugging the middle line and he or she did not have enough room to pass safely. The driver endangered the cyclist and him or herself as well as oncoming traffic. I would shout at someone if they were endangering my life with a two ton vehicle while I'm on my 20 lb bike.
I've got a mate who lives in London and this was happening all the time until one day he just had enough. He now carries one of those little hammers with a point on it for breaking car windows in emergency's. At last count his tally was eight passenger windows and no reprisals (yet) Mind you he's a bit of a nutter and quite enjoys it now.....
Thanks mate. The contours I think give a better line of sight than the GoPro. My GoPro sits high up on my helmet. Still great camera though. I only just got my Hero 2 just before they released the 3- have fun with it when it arrives!
I'm a driver and a cyclist, and I'm not saying I agree or disagree with your reasoning, but one thing I have learned (on both sides) is that if you start using language like that during a "situation" it can escalate quite quickly. If I'm cycling on the roads and a car does anything to aid me; waving me on, dimming their lights, or just giving me enough room for instance, I always make a point of thanking them, in the same way we do when we're driving.
Almost all cyclists are motorists too. They know what it's like sharing the road... Not that bad. Some car drivers seem to feel slighted if they cannot push a smaller vehicle out of the way, then mock cyclists for getting upset that they were almost killed by someone else's lack of intellect.
there is no reason for him to slow down. he has just as much right to be there as anyone else does, and if someone else wants to go faster, its up to them to find a safe way of getting past. period.
The main problem with pushing past is not the bothering. It is a threat to people on 2 wheels and endangers their life. I find it hard to make a car driver aware of such a situation and awareness is the key to this problems solution. Bicycles do usually not have honks if bikers just talk they won't be heard, sure, becoming aggressive won't help. But shouting is a way to make aware of your existence. People who are provoked by being reminded to leave a safety gap shouldn't guide a vehicle.
3 cams? Wow. Nice setup. Do you use a mirror? I would've planted myself right in front of him as soon as I decide to take the lane. I couldn't tell when you started taking the lane. The driver just looked clueless that he should treat you as a vehicle though.
The cyclist was keeping wide of the car doors and the motorist could clearly see they weren't able to complete their overtake. If it had been a car they were passing there would be no argument it was a silly move. As for cyclists 'owning' the highway code, all road users should own and apply it to their own driving and have an expectation that others will do the same.
he was holding a straight line, clear of parked cars. many cyclists have died after being struck when weaving in and out behind parked cars, trying to be polite to drivers. it's just not worth it - many drivers lack the skill/understanding to return the favour. all we can do is stay out in the traffic and piss drivers off - we don't do it for fun, but in the end the solution is for drivers to educate themselves about why cyclists do that stuff. i get that many are just too arrogant to care.
Also, if a cyclist is keeping up with traffic there is no justification for overtaking like this scenario where the car overtook into a non existant space. By taking the lane, this helps prevent this from happening. Also, at 30+ mph, it is dangerous to be in the gutter as the road isn't smooth and you need space to help avoid pot holes on either side.
Even on my driving test, was stopped at a roundabout and we noticed the woman behind didn't even have her bloody left wing mirror out, it was folded over... It's unfair for cyclists that these things can go unpunished. They might be little things, but could put other peoples lives at risk.
For people saying the driver should be pissed...who gives a wilted cabbage? So if another road user pisses you off, you should put them and your kids in danger? Please turn in your licenses
No, OP is right, the driver of this car is everything he called him and more. I've not ridden a pedal bike in long years, but you can't drive along for hundreds of yards parallel with someone on busy suburban roads and call it an overtaking manoeuvre. If you're going the same speed as the other vehicle, get in front or stay behind and leave a decent gap.
Actually the first paved roads in the U.S. were made for the purpose of making it easier for people on bicycles in the late 1890s. Ther first cars in the U.S. did not come until the early 1900s. So if you think about it the cyclists are being nice enough to let the drivers use the roads that were made for bicycles.
cont. This is New Zealand, insurance is not even required for motor vehicles, why would the negligible risk of cyclists need insurance, it simply isn’t worth the expense of collecting it! Cyclists are a low hazard and as such do not require the controls needed to keep motorists in check Todays roads are busy because there are too many motorists on them sitting in traffic jams.
No additional limits for cyclists, so on this road everyone's limit (other than motorcycles with trailers that weight over 50% of the weight of the bike who's limit is 40kph on any road) is 50kph, though the Police are unlikely to stop anyone doing under 60kph, unless they are on a public holiday revenue push, when there is only a 5kph tolerance.
There were parked cars intermittently to the left; he'd have had to move in between them and slow to allow the other car to overtake. And even if he did, the cyclist was keeping pae with the car in front. You've no business overtaking a vehicle merely to sit in front of it at the same speed. The driver looking to overake was, very simply, bang out of line.
I sort of agree, bullies should be stood up to at every SENSIBLE opportunity but now and then you are completely 'out-gunned' and it is only sensible to give way on these occasions. It doesn't make any earthly difference to you how much the person is fined/jailed for if you are dead.
I completely agree - I drive, but I also cycle and wish I could do so more often without feeling like I was going to be put at risk by dangerous driving +/- abuse from drivers that don't understand the highway code. A cyclist must take the lane when it is not safe for a car to pass, and must also ride clear enough of park cars that they are not at risk of doors suddenly being opened into them.
Yes I agree, I think it would have been a lot safer and less stressful if the driver had simply held back until there was a big enough gap between their car and the one in front in order to safely over-take. I don't see him correcting his mistake by using the brakes and giving the cyclist room; rather, he just continues to force his way alongside the cyclist, in very close proximity. Good job the cyclist didn't hit a bump.. I doubt that driver would have stopped in time.
The bike is travelling fast enough and should be allowed to occupy the middle of the lane - have you ever had someone open a door on you from a parked car? The dangerous chances being taken here are those of impatient drivers who can wait until a decent gap appears so they can safely overtake, but no, most of them want to drive inches away from you and bully you into cycling too close to the kerbside and parked vehicles that can either pull out of open their doors on you.
I find my work boots come in handy. Steel toe caps don't half make a racket when they're rattling off the side of some blissfully ignorant Peugeot. My view on it is, so long as I'm riding sensibly, if you get within striking distance, you're too close, especially as I only have an effective range of about half a metre.
Nope. You told him how to cycle within New Zealand and I corrected you by telling you how it is legally required for one to cycle in New Zealand. He could not have ridden any closer to the left as it is illegal to ride a bicycle in the door zone in New Zealand.
Firstly, good on you for having a mature, well worded response (unlike most of these videos get). Looking at the video, the car really should have just given way and stayed behind the cyclist. While there was enough space on the right of the car to over take, if the cyclist had slowed down the car really would not have gained any advantageous road position due to the traffic ahead's speed. The cyclist's reaction still could have been better, although I have seen and said far worse in my life.
I too have seen my share. Actually my and my partner dislike cyclists who: - Travel in pairs along the road. Takes up a lot of the road and they cannot see from behind that add another 1.5 meters, which potentially means we have to cross the centre line in some cases. - Cyclists who have lots of room but have no consideration when riding along - Cyclists who deliberately hold up traffic at the lights by parking right in front of the traffic and therefore slowing down the whole chain of traffic.
If you're on the speed limit (or going as fast as the car in front), take the middle of the lane: you no longer have to let overtakes (or close loitering like this) happen. :D
I like that idea, sometimes people have to learn the hard way. I thought we were all thought how to share when we were young. It seems tho most of us forget the sharing part. I used to have an actual hammer with me when i rode busy streets long time ago. Just showing it makes a lot of people back off. But now they have rules protecting cyclists. If a car hits a cyclist its ALWAYS the cars fault, at least the insurance part. And it helped people look out for cyclists now.
Ok, I am both a cyclist and drive a car, and I can see nothing wrong with what this cyclist is doing here. Notice, he is keeping pace with the flow of traffic. The driver of the BMW (and this goes for a LOT of other drivers too, in my experience) seemed to think that cars have right of way over cyclists, who should pull over and let them past. Wrong - Cyclists on the road have the same right of way as cars. The BMW driver should have been more patient.
There is tax on everything so everyone pays for the roads, the difference in New Zealand is that there aren't even C02 charges on vehicles so "none motorists" pay for the roads motorists use (naturally the goods and services they use are transported on the roads the are paying for so they at least get a little bit back)
You Tube says: There is the UK Government's new "I'm too thick to own a computer" scheme where people with less than 25IQ points can take their computers back to the shop and get a full refund
You sir need to do your homework before posting a hateful comment about cyclists, sure some of us aren't the best cyclist may cause delays but that doesn't give people rights to aggressively drive past and abuse us. The reason that we are not required to pay road tax is because road tax is also known as emission tax in other words something that emits bad things into the environment.
Ok, here's one for you. Imagine if the drivers child was riding that bike, would he like another motorist endangering the life of his son/daughter like that. The answer: probably not...
If he were keeping up with traffic then why were they all passing him? I do quite a bit of riding (weather permitting) and I stay as far over as is safe. I'd rather hit a door than get tangled up with a moving vehicle.
I respectfully disagree with assertion that we should simply give in to the selfish and impatient gits, simply because they have no respect for fellow human beings. They need to be shown that such actions are not acceptable, and be taught to simply be a little more patient and forgiving, or at least they need to be fined/sentenced when they cant, just like any other psychopathic criminal who lacks empathy.
The city I live in doesn't have one street with any sort of bike path/lane, even though we have been fighting for it for 20-25yrs., and no, I haven't ridden on the sidewalk since I was 5 years old. I just try to stay the hell out of the way.
Can't speak for your location, but the highway code where I am stipulates that slower vehicles should keep to the left so that other vehicles may more easily pass. This is often misinterpreted by both cyclists and motorists to mean "bikes should stay to the left so we can share the lane" This is false. Bikes and cars should not remain beside each other, except when stopped. If there isn't room ahead to complete the overtake, hold back until there is.
The Highway Code's laws are written in black & white & applies to ALL road users. If you drive you really ought to read it or you will be convicted of a crime. I was hit by 4x4 driver who didn't look before turning left (Rule 182) & suffered fractured ribs, cuts & bruising. The motorists was blamed & convicted because HE broke the law & was at fault!
#FFS, If the driver can't pass you at a safely distance if you're 90 cm off the curb , he can't pass you safely if you're 30 or 60 cm off the curb. There's no god-given right to overtake anyone. Car, truck, bike, horse. If it's not safe to overtake , you're not allowed to do it.
Don't stay on the white line... Occupy 1/3 of a lane on multilane roads. Find quite roads if you wish to take the whole lane. Takes a bit of experience to plan things out before hand but it is the best to do.
I don't have a problem with Cyclists or motor bikes... But I don't agree with all the laws on the road that allow Cyclists to basically do what they want! That's all!
i dont know how fast cars are allowed to drive in the shown country, but here in germany, it's 50 kph. (police's recording limitations lead to driven 60 kph) bikes dont usually do that speed in flat streets. bikers should at least accept, that cars can be faster. so bikes shouldn't drive in the middle of the lane, as long as they are slower or even have the same speed as traffic. pass and let pass. no matter if car or bike. it's all about respect and understanding the urges of each other.
I wouldn't call it bullying at all though. Just careless driving on the car's part. As the uploader said - the passenger apparently smiled at him. That could've been anything from, yes, smiling at the situation they'd put him in, or more likely a "hello mr cyclist", or even a sympathetic "sorry we're passing so close, my husband lacks spacial awareness and I'm filing for divorce tomorrow. How you doin'?". I agree that in danger, swearing is acceptable, but it'll harm your defense later.
If that where me on the bike, i would have ripped off his wing mirror, turned down one of the side streets and gone through somewhere he can't get through.
You're more likely to get hit that way because it invites cars to try to slip passed you when they really shouldn't. The State of Florida DMV goes so far as to suggest that riders not sit right on the white line. Most rider advocacy people will tell you the same.
@ozarkmtnlake hes not obligated to move over, bikes are considered vehicles as well and are entitled to a full lane of traffic. When passing, cars need to follow the same rules that they do when passing other cars.
im a motorcyclist but "rougebladerunner" is completely out of order with that... maybe he has never had a door fly open on him... hopefully he will though... teach him what its like.
The really interesting part is that the cyclist was keeping up with traffic when the motorist crowded next to him. Reason he couldn't complete his pass was that there was no place to go. He was clearly moving out for the parked cars!!!!
@TheVexatiousLitigant what city or town r u at and i can tell you a little bit better what i would suggest?
please explain why you choose to cycle 4 metres from the curb ?
What is the speed limit for a push bike in built up area?
how many cameras do you have on your bike?
How many cameras?

Trust me, you can learn a lot, unless you are too set in your ways
If he were keeping up with traffic then why were they all passing him? I do quite a bit of riding (weather permitting) and I stay as far over as is safe. I'd rather hit a door than get tangled up with a moving vehicle.
Its always the pricks with their fog lights on! My basic rule is, the more/brighter lights on a car, the bigger the bell end behind the wheel.
Where do people get their driving licences? xD
The city I live in doesn't have one street with any sort of bike path/lane, even though we have been fighting for it for 20-25yrs., and no, I haven't ridden on the sidewalk since I was 5 years old. I just try to stay the hell out of the way.
So it's the death penalty to do this nowadays?
Can't speak for your location, but the highway code where I am stipulates that slower vehicles should keep to the left so that other vehicles may more easily pass. This is often misinterpreted by both cyclists and motorists to mean "bikes should stay to the left so we can share the lane"
This is false. Bikes and cars should not remain beside each other, except when stopped. If there isn't room ahead to complete the overtake, hold back until there is.
Did anyone else search their car registration, wondering if they had been caught being naughty? lol
Hi Legion,
I do ride a bike regularly and I specifically DON'T carry one because I KNOW I'd use it.
I'do know how you feel though.
P.
^_^
Sick of backing down. I think that speaks for itself.
He thinks that all bikers own a RODE microphone shops.
Definitely should have booted him. Or 'extended your fist out as a reflex action as you thought he was going to hit you'. ;)
Given that what you have suggested directly contravenes the road code, the answer is no.
I've been hit by a MacDonald's bag with food in when i was going about 40mph...I was 12...These wankers need to be sorted out.
It's no wonder the car was pissed, you were way to far out into the lane. You had plenty of room to move closer to the curb.
You're absolutely right Tinnie. 0 out of 10 for my observance skills :)
