my dad and i have been going to play pool at the table at our local bowling alley since all the pool halls near us are 21+ and i am not that lol. we do it every weekend and it's super fun because my dad was excellent at pool in university, winning a ton of tourneys and all that, but i suck at it. that tends to make our games pretty one sided, with him winning most of the time. but, a few days ago my dad got news that one of his work friends is trying to get rid of a pool table, and they're willing to let us take it. we go over to their house on the weekend to get it, and i'm so excited to have something to practice on. i'm watching this video to get a better sense of how to put one together before the weekend, and i already feel a lot more confident thanks to this video. also the camera angles and editing and stuff was very aesthetically pleasing, very well done :D
Happy for you, great addition to a home. This pool table was the same. Someone told me it was free if I took it apart and moved it… I unfortunately do not have a video of the taking apart.. I would suggest to separate and label hardware in ziplock bags and take lots of pictures during the dismantling process.. Best of luck 🙌
I just started putting together my first pool table in my living room. Now I have an idea of how precise the level of the table need to be, before and after the slates are placed.
Sorry new to pool table buying. I love pool and want the best. How do i filter out crappy pool tables and buy the best? Also with a skilled installation like this jedi wizard knight!
Usually a pool table supplies store is a good way to get information and to seek a certain quality to budget. They usually also offer installation by qualified (Jedi) installers. Thanks for watching
This video is very helpful. Congrats on so many views. I’m anxious to try it. I used to build and install automation, and one thing to know about bubble levels is that unless it is an expensive calibrated level, it’s unlikely to be accurate, but of course it’s not rocket science. A work around is to check for level, then rotate the level 180 degrees and check again. If the level is accurate it will read the same in both positions, and if not then it’s off. If it’s off then simply average the results and make adjustments so that the level reads the same in both positions, which might not be a centered bubble.
I installed professionally for 15 yrs...we used a machinist level...way too accurate for a pool table but as u can figure by using that the level was spot on!
I'm probably going to be doing that tomorrow. A relative got a used table. Said it's apart, the slate and felt is off. I didn't know to use bees wax in the joints, I've never put one together before. We'll see how it goes, I think I'm going basically just to carry stuff.
Some people use putty for the joints, but over time it can break and turn to dust. If you vacuum your felt then it will get the dust through the felt and leave a mark along the seam. Not something I was willing to risk with a black felt, have fun tomorrow :)
@@HovingtonInstruments Thanx for that, I really liked the bees wax trick you used. I haven't even seen the table, he apparently got it very cheap, said it's about 20 years old, he said the guy told him he paid $2,000 for it though. Still about 8 or 10 hours before we are supposed to go get it, he said he's going to rent a trailer. I asked him if there was any real wood on it, he said there was. I notice you leveled that thing a lot in the video, I hope our carpenters levels are accurate enough.
Clint Walker installers use a higher precision level. That’s why you see me used the cue ball to find what my level wasn’t picking up. As for quality, 2000 20 years ago could be really nice. Mine was free as long as I was talking it apart and moving it.
@@HovingtonInstruments I just got home, the table wasn't as nice as I thought it was going to be. The skirt was particle board and plywood, when I was a kid in the 60's it seems to me most pool tables were made of real hardwood. It does have 3 nice pieces of heavy slate though, although it looked like the seams were filled with drywall joint compound and not very well. We'll spend some days trying to level it and I think he is going to try to find bees wax for the joints. It will be good enough for a basement pool table for his son to learn how to play pool. Thanx for your great video and comments!!
Don't kid yourself people that's a really cheap table. One person doesn't pick up a thick slate section and put it in place by himself. Good slate doesn't have gaps like that. Mine fit together perfectly, no wax or putty required.
+Alex yes, they are different pieces but it should come with all the parts you’ll get with your purchase.. you’ll need a staple gun to install those on the underside and there is a groove on top with a insert to hold it in place.
I wouldn’t recommend anything else than slates, but if you really want to make it from wood products i would suggest MDF, the thicker the better. MDF won’t expand or contract like plywood. Felt should be used to cover it. Hope this helps, once again, I wouldn’t recommend a wood surface.
Tomy Hovington thank you very much for replying. I want to make one for my son a small pool table. I do not want to buy from thr market but i like to make one by myself so that i can gift to my kid. He's 4 and he likes pool table very much. Thank you again.

Not a bad video, you seem to know what your doing, however as a seasoned installer for pool tables there were some things that you could have done better. 1. Assemble the whole frame first before putting the legs on (nitpick). 2. Always have someone else help you to put on the slate, not only did you move the frame doing it by yourself, but you could have hurt yourself. 3. Using wax to fill the seams is an old tactic that should only be used on tables that use pins, a better way is to get some automotive filler and activator to fill the seams. 4. When putting on the cloth it's better to spray the glue as your stretching it around the edges, ends first then the sides, this way you won't be in that much of a hurry, this also give ample time for the glue to dry so you won't have to use clamps (although the cloth did seem too small for the table so the clams may have been a good idea). Other than that your good.

@@HovingtonInstruments Working in the steel industry didn't hurt but let's face it, you're a large, fairly young, strong man. This is the real reason you can lift those slates not working in the steel industry. I'm sure plenty of steel workers can't lift those slates. Still enjoyed the video very much thank you.
I’m purchasing this table from a buddy. Is it possible to just remove the legs and have about 3-4 guys lift the top during transport? To save the trouble of a entire breakdown and rebuild?
@@Ohiokev 3 months late here but absolutely not. Sectioned slate tables need to be very carefully dismantled and reassembled in order to properly level them together. Even if you did manage to move the entire bed and frame together, you'd just end up having to re-level the slates anyway, so there's no point.
I am professional pooltable mechanic. He is not using the right level to begin with and he moved the frame putting on the slates . You are suppost to use a machinist level not a carpenter level Also the slates aren't butted up correctly leaving a huge gap. The way he is putting on the glue table is incorrect you have to spray glue on the edge of the cloth and the slate. I sure hope this isn't doing this for a living. If he is he needs to be properly taught.
You got to also understand not everyone has the exact tools needed to set this up so he has to improvise a bit. Overall he has done a great job with minimal tools!

Anywhere from $175 to $900 depending on the table, your area, and the mechanic. $300-500 is pretty typical. Also depends on what you have done, recovering rails is expensive. Also usually there are two guys working on it, sometimes more.
LOL. Get a friend to help. Once you move the slate, hit the frame so it's all out of whack and throw your back out you won't be able to play a game on it for months, lol
Thanks for the video. Some points I'll take some I'll leave. Love the beeswax filling the crevice for smooth gameplay. Why did you move the slate yourself? Was that for macho status or legit had no one available?
A year later....can I ask: how did the glue hold without staples? And there were some pretty big gaps between the slate that you filled w wax. Have you noticed any movement between the slate pieces?
Hi Doogie. This model does not have any stapling wood for the felt. Can only be glued. The glue hold well except for one pocket where one wedge unglued.( quick fix) . as for the gaps haven’t noticed any changes or disruption while playing. The slates were also screwed prior to adding the beeswax . My son and I play occasionally , and I do play with friends. Thanks for watching!
Then you’d really go crazy to see the shims and wedges professionals like myself use in the real world to level a table down to a few thousandths of an inch lmao
What will happen if chalk residue is left on your table cloth? I dont think the colour is the right choice for a pool table even though it looks stylish
Achhuana Hk the player I didn’t get to choose the colour as it was a used table and the cloth still has many years ahead. As for the chalk residues, I have black chalk which doesn’t leave any apparent residue. Any cloth colour other than blue would allow for some chalk to set visually on the top. The light tan colour, in my view, would be worse in that regard.
@@HovingtonInstruments if i were you i would order for a different type of cue ball colour that would get the chalk off from it or anything if possible , better start searching online 😁😁😁
Many thanks for posting this video! I also have a table that looks exactly like yours. Namco is where my dad bought it many years ago. It’s in pieces now from when I moved out. What the people focus on: The assembly of the pool table
What I focus on: *Well look at that slick, shiny, drum kit, oooh shalala*
Some assembly required

My 3 1/2' by 7' one piece slate was so much easier but this was a very good tutorial.
not only did he build the table he also played all the instruments in the background music ,while building the table.
With my eyes closed ;)
I love it!That music is so soothing
I bought a table and broke the marble.....I'm here to see what I did wrong....I probably didn't have to smash it with a hammer
i have the same exact one!! glad i found this video because i had no idea where to start with putting it together. nice work!!
+Michal Kieloch Thanks Michal, I'm happy this will be of use to you:) let me know how it went when you're done..
Imperial makes a simple but good table
@@HovingtonInstruments Are you supposed to wait until you play a game?
What is the brand of the billiard table Sir??
Is it 9ft or 8ft?
@@joshuacapuchino4057 Mr. Billiards 8ft
Just did the math on the slate. If it’s an inch thick, 150lbs. 1-1/4” thick, 187lbs. I think I would need help. 😂
It might be 3/4", that's fairly common on decent but lower-end tables.
Well done Tomy, don't listen to idiot's, nice job, how do you keep your cool. Gentleman
At least the pool table doesnt move when you play
Homie lends a hand at the last minute, gets first break on the new table
That really takes skill putting together a pool table. I doubt I could ever do it that well. I would feel much better hiring someone to do it for me.
It’s not anything near professionally done! It takes weeks to put a table together, letting stuff dry, stretching the felt, hardening the rail ect!
Now, you need to learn to stay down and still when you shoot. ;-)
How much would it cost for a professional installer to set up a pool table?
Anywhere from $175 to $900 depending on the table, your area, and the mechanic. $300-500 is pretty typical. Also depends on what you have done, recovering rails is expensive. Also usually there are two guys working on it, sometimes more.
In about 6 months when he's bored of it, we'll see the uninstallation video, LOL.
6977warrior1 sorry to disappoint! Not going to happen:)
I would never get bored with a pool table, especially if it was in my house.
@@HovingtonInstruments how is it :)
LOL. Get a friend to help. Once you move the slate, hit the frame so it's all out of whack and throw your back out you won't be able to play a game on it for months, lol
You guys in the forest know how to play billiards too!
Thanks for the video. Some points I'll take some I'll leave. Love the beeswax filling the crevice for smooth gameplay. Why did you move the slate yourself? Was that for macho status or legit had no one available?
steven metz I honestly didn’t have anyone available at that time. I even had to wait for my son later in the day to flip the top. Thanks for watching
15:11 Should have kept recording till the game's conclusion.
Double Dare Fan lol!!! Don't think a 2 hrs video would have done as well as this! Thanks for watching...
Then we’d be here all damn night!..
For some reason, I was able to watch all 15mins of the video plus ads 😂without getting bored. Great work

Moral of the story. FIND A FRIEND WITH TRUCK AND BUY USED ONE
What a beautiful pool table. Excellent video.

Not even if I had all the time in the world. Hire a professional.
5 x 3. Pool table..
😂 for kids
4’ x 8’ not for kids..
WAS THAT A 7" OR AN 8" TABLE?? I DON'T THINK THOSE SLATES WEIGHED 250 EACH
You are right, a 7 inch or 8 inch table would not weigh 250lbs...
my ocd would kill me knowing there is a business card under my table keeping it level.
truemadmanmatrix 😂😂😂😂😂
Then you’d really go crazy to see the shims and wedges professionals like myself use in the real world to level a table down to a few thousandths of an inch lmao
Snooker tables are 12ft x 6ft with 5 slates ......those are leveled with playing cards by professionals . It's normal
@@HovingtonInstruments oops i didn't know there were black chalks available,if that's so then your table is perfect
The only issue I found for the black colour was for how quick the cue ball gets spotted and needs to be cleaned up.. Thanks for watching the video:)
@@HovingtonInstruments if i were you i would order for a different type of cue ball colour that would get the chalk off from it or anything if possible , better start searching online 😁😁😁
Its 5:50 am and I am deep in the youtube wormhole, no clue why I'm watching this but damn this guy is fucking on to it, sub to my gaming channel 🤙
Many thanks for posting this video! I also have a table that looks exactly like yours. Namco is where my dad bought it many years ago. It’s in pieces now from when I moved out. I called up a professional installer and they want $1100 to assemble/level! Which I believe is a couple hundred less that what it costs new. Going to follow this DIY video when it’s time to install.
After watching this video all I can say is that I'm glad my house came with a table 😊
Damn, I've read the title wrong. Now what am I going to do with all my unpaid workers...
This was an insane build! I’m good on this 🤣 I would of ended up with glue and vice grips on my face
I really like playing billiards
but the problem is I don't have enough money to buy it and it cost more than 1k
