THANK YOU! I just shot my first roll with my pentax and 105 and the results came back similar to yours. I know shooting at 2.4 was going to be difficult but the images made me reconsider my skills as a photographer. Atleast I know now the problem lies within the camera unfortunately but I appreciate this video!
I had a Pentax 6x7 way back in the day and I can't remember why I got rid of it, considering I loved that camera. If I had the cash I would get another one. These days I own the Pentax 645N and it's another Pentax that I absolutely love. I have a 55mm lens and a 150mm lens. I love that I can get 16 shots on a roll. This camera makes shooting film a lot of fun. Maybe there's a 6x7 in my future 🙂 BTW, the 645N is an autofocus body but even shooting with manual lenses is a breeze. There's a green light inside the viewfinder that lights up when you hit focus with a manual lens.
I recently bought a 67ii with a 105mm lens, and I noticed the same thing - but in my case the focus was almost always really close but slightly off (wide open). In my case I'm pretty sure it was down to me moving slightly after focusing. I've been trying to be a lot more careful and see how things come out, but I still have to get some film developed before I'll see the results.
0:19 oh you love the big negative. 😂 i hope someday everyone likes me.😂 Really great video. The bokeh is incredible with the 105. The pentax 67 is also still on my list of cameras that i definitely want to try. 😀
just found your channel . Love it. I baught and sold the pentax 3 times over the years. I kept wanting to love it. But weight, shutter slap, awkward film loading finally made me just give up. I ended up on a mamiya 7II and havent looked back
The standard focus screen for the 6x7 and 67 models has a split image rangefinder which makes focusing quick and sure. Unlike the last 67II model , these bodies are not designed for user interchangeable screens, although alternative screens were sold by Pentax for in-shop replacement. Third parties did sell screens which ended up being installed hit or miss by users. Clearly, there is a mechanical error in the location of the screen or the mirror. A problem with the mirror seems more likely to appear as an uneven focus across the screen area, rather than a full screen, uniform lack of focus. Very interesting, so please post an update once it's sorted out.
Same issue with my 67 from Japan front focusing really bad. Sent it in for repair. At Infinity the view is still a little soft on the 105 but my shots are in focus. I also use a Nikon lens diopter for my aging eyes.
That Kit! YNWA! Love this review man. I actually have a Pentax 645 and adapting this lens over to it. Can’t wait to shoot some portraits with it. The still look great and can’t wIt to see more work from you man. All the best from Philly🙏🏾
This is a refreshing video to see some hiccups with new gear (particularly film gear). This is particularly relevant to me as I just took receipt of a 6x7 from Japan (with a 105 and a 165). You've got me worried now, but I'll do tests and kill a roll of 120 to try both lenses. I think 165 2.8 is going to be a trip! I hope you're still enjoying your journey.
I’m sorry that you having these focusing issues. Coincidentally, I’m having exactly the same problem with a ‘new’ camera that I just purchased and it’s being looked at by a repair shop as well. Good luck!
I had exactly the same problem with my ¨new¨ Olympus OM-10. An expert took off the lens and noticed immediately a slight misalignment of the mirror. He said it was easy to fix and did so for a very reasonable price. He also checked the entire camera and put in new light seals. It's now reborn. If this is similar to your problem with focusing, don't worry. A complete recovery won't leave you homeless.😇
Hi! I’ve recently had same issue on my Hasselblad, the mirror was out of alignment with a focusing screen. Obviously the 67 and hassy has different construction but for a technician it is a minor problem to fix - he just will put the camera on a jig and correct all misaligned stuff, and then you will focus it E.Z.
Great video Ribs... Sucks you are having focus issues! I had something like this with my SQ-A when the mirror was stopping short due to a loose screw... hope you get it fixed quickly
Only had 2 issues with the 67 one issue with mine was focus but I heard it was probably lens, supposedly if the lens has yellowing or “haze” it can cause it to make your focus or your photos seem a bit smooth not sharp and it looks out of focus so I returned the lens and I haven’t tried a new one but that could be it and 2nd issue is that my 67 locked up mid shoot but I think it was because the battery I guess had moved or was loose because once I re - inserted the battery it worked . So yeah make sure you get a nice and fat battery to fill out the battery compartment , it’s a thing I guess. Certain brand of batteries are slimmer than other brands , don’t ask me why but yeah it exists .
I just went through this with my mamiya 645 pro. If it doesent align up at infinity then its broke. The mamiya had a screw I could turn and that fixed it. But its probably impossible to handhold 2.8 anyways, half my shots are still soft. Good luck.
Had this same problem with my yashica D, I dropped it.... and after that my focus is always off on the viewfinder. Hopefully yours is an easy alignment! Especially for such a great camera!
Bad luck with the focus issue. Will be interesting to see whether it is mirror or screen. Talking of screens, getting a Beattie Intescreens are fantastic - like turning the light on so great is the added brightness and ease of focusing. If you have a meter in the prism that would need recalibrating as the screen is so much brighter than the original. Whilst you are compiling your birthday gift list - I like the CLEARFILE PRINTFILE CP-1 CONTACT PROOFER. It just works well. Bit less restrictive than some of the Patterson ones. Great for the darkroom. PrintFile also do a really good range of print through archival neg sleeves. I get mine from Preservation Equipment in Norfolk but I am sure you can get them elsewhere. The 120-UB neg sleeves are best for 6x7 - about £30 for 100 sheets.
thanks for the tip! def gonna look into the contact sheet options. would be great to not only store negatives that way but also use it for contact prints
I'll agree once serviced you will have an excellent camera friend, hope you downloaded the manual for it. I had one of those 6x7's with the same problem, blamed myself after a photo reception shoot images proved non usable. Thankfully my Nikon EM saved my butt on that one, sent the 6x7 in for service and the repair facility crippled me with the cost. I sold the camera soon after as I couldn't trust it. You think the Pentax 6x7 is big? I now shoot with the Mamiya RB 67 with a three lens set. However that said you'll find your Pentax 6x7 is a much easier, pleasurable camera to shoot. I wouldn't take my Mamiya RB67 for a walk around. A side note man you make excellent videos
Thank you for sharing your work and your experience on the Pentax 67. I was considering to buy this camera but kind of like backing-off as accidents can always happen while the camera is in transit. I honestly have Hasselblad 500CM but would like to get the 6x7 for client purposes as 6x6 is more like of personal taste.
That 105mm BW portrait was dreamy though. You should contact the seller and tell them about the focusing issues. Maybe you can get some partial refund.
Ground glass shouldn't move anywhere, unless the prism contacts got damaged. In that case the camera definitely fell on the floor / got banged against the wall or something. With this camera and honestly any medium format SLR it's easy to get misalignment due to sheer size of the mirror, even if you shake the camera just a little bit too hard. 35mm SLR cameras are much more robust in this regardthereafter.
I love these cameras and the images they can provide but damn are they finicky lol I guess that’s what happens when you use a 40-50 year old camera 🤷🏾♂️ mine is currently sitting on my shelf waiting for me to fix it myself
Thanks for sharing your experience. I've been intrigued by the 6x7, so it's nice to see some real-world experience. Also, I wasn't aware of that potential error on the focusing, so that's good to know to look out for. I've heard that 6x7 translates well to 8x10 for printing (less cropping necessary). Is that also your experience? Or do you have to take that into account when shooting to leave yourself some room?
Great content as usual bro! I always love when you show your prints at the end too. I just wanna say that "bokeh" and "background blur" are not exactly the same thing. Background blur caused by a shallow depth of field doesn't necessarily contain the characteristics known as bokeh. Lol I hope that makes some sense
I’m a big fan of your work, but doing a trade shoot outside of your zip code during the current restrictions? C’mon man. Gotta say I’m a little disappointed.
Nick Carver did a video on this, second to last I think. His Mamiya had the same issue and he explains what it is and what he did to fix it.
gotcha. i won't be doing it myself -- id prob end up making things worse haha
THANK YOU! I just shot my first roll with my pentax and 105 and the results came back similar to yours. I know shooting at 2.4 was going to be difficult but the images made me reconsider my skills as a photographer. yea the big negative is the key. its great, plus the bokeh

interesting. i find the pentax 6x7 (when its in working order) is very simple to use!

Nice honest review, loved the prints, especially the one at 2:22 - just stunning! Curious if that was shot on Kodak Tri-X
thank you! i don't remember but its either that or pancro
Glad you figured out why the focus wasn't going the way you were hoping! I hope the fix isn't too pricey. And the darkroom prints have me pumped!
Haha yea, let’s assume the cost isn’t insane ... and yes, the prints weren’t too shabby!
Nice walkthrough again. I'll drop you details where you can get your 67 serviced.
awesome - thanks! would be very helpful 😊

ahh yes. seems to be a common issue with slrs

greetings, love the videos . . . any chance you and the Roger at Shoot Film Like a Boss could do a collaboration? Just a thought . . .
Haha that’s in the works! Just waiting for restrictions to ease
I found the 105mm very soft wide open.
i actually think its surprisingly sharp for what it is

From what you described in the cutaway, the mirror is out of alignment. Having it serviced should straighten that right out
Yea! Seems like it should be all good once I fix that

hey man! I just bought a Pentax and I am having the same problems.....
Prob needs a repair. Check out my
Other video about it
You might want to ask the Camera Doctor if you should send along one or both of the lenses to be sure they are calibrated correctly etc as well.
yup! my local guy will handle it, which is nice. that way i can take it to him myself, no shipping needed
Considering purchasing from Japan . Was there a significant import duty on top of say the eBay price ? Thanks👍🏾
yea import to UK was 20%
@@ribsy many thanks, I'll try and acquire local first , 👌🏾
First thing I noticed with your images was that it was front focusing. Good luck with the alignment.
yea thats def the issue. getting it serviced this week! thanks
I would love to get one but my enlarger only goes to 6x6.
still worth it! you can simply crop out that bit. not a deal breaker 😊
I'll agree once serviced you will have an excellent camera friend, hope you downloaded the manual for it. great! i can't wait to done with the servicing
Let us know how the repair goes and what needed fixing.
yea will def be doing an update video!
IMHO to nail focus with small f-numbers on MF you need a magnifier/loupe, no matter how big and bright is the finder on your camera
yea man have recommended that! but, my camera def neeed a re-alignment regardless

Hey Ribsy! I wonder how many other shooters are out there missing their focus? Importantly, we all should take our equipment for a service.
yea it could be a problem for many - worth some CLA
Mirror stop issue likely but you've probably fixed it by now.
yea fixed it -- ground glass was misaligned
That 105mm BW portrait was dreamy though. You should contact the seller and tell them about the focusing issues. Maybe you can get some partial refund.

Just take the Prism off and shoot one Film role from Tripod, you will know if camera is at fault ,or prism at fault
