    Whenever I see a psychic on TV now, I always think of Clinton Baptiste, he was only on-screen for a few minutes but he made such an impact that everything he said became an instant catchphrase... Alex Lowe's send-up of Derek Acorah and all the other over-the-top psychics was spot on and very funny.

    Most characters in the series are based on people Peter Kay has met. Keith Laird was well known in around our parts because of his attitude and seriousness towards fire safety, though the dog part is completely false and led to the controversy as everyone knew who the character Keith Lard was based off. One of the best one's still to come is in series 2 with Sammy the Snake during a fun day.

    Peter Kay always denied that Keith Lard was based on the real life Keith Laird, but what are the chances of a fire officer with that name, being from Peter's home town? What really nailed it was the 'fire kills in minutes, smoke kills in seconds" line as it transpired the real life Keith used that in his talks and it had been quoted in a local newspaper.

    • @Wally-H
      @Wally-H 4 года назад +4

      Correct. The "fire kills in minutes, smoke kills in seconds" line was used by Keith Laird in his talks and had appeared in an article about him in a local paper. It was obvious Peter Kay had seen it and got the idea of basing his character on Laird. That was crucial evidence that led to Peter Kay losing the court case and having to issue the apology and pay compensation. Much as I like Peter you have to sympathise with Keith's point of view - it wouldn't be especially funny to have people sniggering behind your back, calling you 'Dogtanion' and singing Disco Inferno when you walk into a room. You'd be in a situation where people might not take you seriously anymore and your job would become untenable. it's easy to laugh about it when it's not your livelihood at stake.

    The 'You can walk' comment from Clinton Baptiste refers to a dropped running gag where Brian could walk and was faking his disability (possibly as part of a social security scam; I think possibly in the original script that's where he gets the money to pay for the Cadillac which is a mystery that's commented on but left unresolved in the broadcast version). There's also a scene in episode 1 where he transfers from a mobility scooter to a wheelchair seemingly unaided that's another leftover element.
    The pilot, which was part of That Peter Kay Thing, was very clear that Brian was faking his injury; you see him stand up out of the wheelchair when he sees the club on fire. But they dropped the idea for the series and edited out the parts that referred to it except those two very minor things. Probably they thought it would make Brian too unlikeable.

    Den Perry is played by Ted Robbins suffered a heart attack in 2015 while on tour with Phonenix Nights live at the Manchester Arena. Since then his health appears to have improved and continues to act, he presents a local radio show and is often the warm up comedian for the audience on other shows.

    Steve Royle the shit juggler at the end is actually a very good juggler and is of the old school variety act stable. He was on the most recent series of Britain's Got Talent where he finished in the top 3. I saw a show years ago that was Dave Spikey (Jerry St Clair) & Friends, Ted Robbins (Den Perry) and Steve Royle were also on the bill. Royle should've been opening the show but Spikey came on saying he was going to be late as he had just got out of prison.....turns out he had done an afternoon gig in a prison and one of his juggling props had gone missing so the prison had been locked down until it was found!

    So glad you like it, what with being American and all. But from your comments and expressions it seems you already know the humour, which is marvellous. I do love how you get practically every item of comedy in this programme. You would be at home in Bolton, and Greater Manchester. We all know these are idiots, and so do you. That's all you need.

    It's been a long time since I've watched it, but I have this on DVD, and it has a cast commentary audio track. If I remember correctly, they said the bit where young Kenny writes "Pyskick" on that roundabout banner was not a scripted joke, but genuinely actor Justin Moorhouse being shite at spelling.

      @@garethwilliams5809 If I remember correctly, they refer several times to Daniel Kitson (Spencer) as "The bastard". Apparently he did an interview not long after his stint on the show in which he named it as the worst thing he's ever been part of, and labelled some of the other cast "racists", which left Kay et al scratching their heads at how he could think such things (on both points).
      *IIRC. Yeah it's been at least 10 years since I watched the DVD, but I've run through it several times with the commentary on.

    Try the services, the pilot or episode 0 of that Peter kay thing. It's great and is on disc 2 of the dvd, a pilot recorded 2 years before for Comedy Lab. Based on Pearl Hardman and her crew at the services, and struggling teenager Matthew Kelly, preparing for a visit from Bob Carolgees.

    So the actor who plays Clinton Baptiste has actually taken the character with permission from Channel four and Peter Kay and actually does comedic psychic shows on tour. And the Juggler who auditions at the end of the show is a professional juggler called Steve Royle.
