I’m 63 & retired but I work 2 days a week at a ladies consignment shop. I always wear something current, flattering & fun on those days. Every single time, I’ll get at least 2 compliments just walking to the door, then several more during my 4 hour shift. So now, any time I go out, for any reason, I make an effort. I feel so much more confident & no where near invisible!
No cardigans or trenchcoats for this 71-year-old. But I have dusted off, and worn this morning, my old denim jacket with leopard print velvet collar and cuffs. I sewed these on about 10 years ago, with leftover fabric after shortening the leopard print wide leg velvet pants. I might actually wear them together this season 😃
I love the 'dress up day' idea because I have a very bad habit of "saving" nice items and new purchases for that event or social situation that quite frankly - never happens !!
People used to dress up for church every Sunday--now even that is casual! God doesn't care how you dress for church, but I always thought it was a sign of respect.
The thing about dressing up - it's so TRUE! I just got a pair of burgundy mary janes from Rothy's and I decided to wear them on an errand run. These shoes started at least three conversations that day. They're SHOES... On my FEET! People see you no matter what you're wearing, so you may as well look cute. I've got my closet set with good pieces, and I know what I have in there, it takes me the same effort to put on the cute outfits as it does the grubby ones.
That's so true! And I notice that most people are wearing the throw-on-in-a-hurry outfits more and more and it's refreshing to see someone actually being intentional with their look! ❤️
I try my best to compliment ppl I see in stores who dress with attention, flare, and care. It is so obvious compared to the mindless mass. I know this would strengthen their resolve to continue to dress for pleasure.
In my family the women all like to dress nicely every day- especially if they are leaving the house. My mother was described as “That woman who always looks like she’s going to a party”, and I’ve had people say, “cute outfit, but you ALWAYS look so cute” Mind you, we aren’t young or terribly thin! We have also had LOTS of mean girl comments like “Why are you so dressed up!?!” (Don’t ever do that). My sister in law has the absolute best retort to those types of comments, “Well, I have a reputation to keep up.” 💥
Lots of women in my family as well, and I grew up the same. Nail polish has to be all the way on or off. 😂 In my twenties, I was always "over" dressed.
I loved that Ted Talk! I noticed a few years ago when I wore a feminine dress people would always comment. I found it so inspiring that people noticed when I did not wear the frumpy clothes everywhere. It really changed my outlook on what I should be wearing and that people do notice. One year several my 17-22 year old college students started to dress like me! Hopefully we will inspire the next generation to dress well and not just wear their lounge around the house clothes when they go places. Plus, I found that businesses and people took me more seriously when I dressed well on planes, in hotels, stores, etc.
Love all of this! And yes about being taken more seriously with the way you dress! If you have an issue you need to address you can get so much further dressed like you care rather than sweats and greasy hair lol (at least for me!) ❤️😃
Great tips! I work hybrid in NYC. I dress up for the office at least once a week. My coworkers don’t. They used to always ask where are you going? My response.. work! Now they’ve finally learned to stop asking me :) I dress for me not them. It makes me feel good. Besides it seems coworkers take me seriously if I’m dressed professionally rather than jeans and sneakers all the time. Ladies dress the way that works best for you whenever u feel like it :)
I do the same! We have to go in 3 days a week, and I make an effort at least one of those days. Not suit-level dressed up, but "nice business casual", which stands out among the guys in khaki shorts and running shoes :)
I remember saying, "If you are not feeling well, or out of sorts, dress-up at bit more that day, and your disposition will change." I think this is absolutely true!
I'm going to do this. I'm going to dress "up" more often. When I worked full time, I dressed very nicely - everyone would ask why I was dressed so nicely - I would say, "Why not?" - I spent more waking time at work than anywhere else in total! I felt good when I dressed up more. Time to start again!
Lockdown turned my office job into a permanent fully remote job and I make a point to get dressed every day, even if I'm not going anywhere. Not heels & a fancy dress, but a matching, coordinated looks like I put effort into my outfit. I find some days I change my clothes, like if I'm going for a lunch hike, then back to my outfit for the afternoon, but I equate that to someone who goes to the office gym at lunch is doing the same thing. Definitely helped my mood and overall mental health.
Likewise- on my telework days- I still get up and get dressed and do makeup as though I was going into the office. I am on a lot of Teams meetings- and making the effort to appear no different remotely is very good and I wish We can always “telll who is not dressed for “success” on online meetings because they do not turn their cameras on!
I was a professional singer all my life so I dressed up 5 and 6 nights a week. When I retired full time, I did liquidate many of the things in my closet, but kept several of my favorites and I do enjoy putting together an outfit that stands out. I feel better and always get compliments and interactions with people, and also get continued use out of my collection
I’m retired now, but I loved dressing up and putting together outfits when I was working. I always felt much more dynamic and good about the day. I did not spend a fortune on my clothes. But in the office I was always known as the classy dresser. I always put my outfit together the night before.
I have always chosen my outfit and accessories the night before. This allows for a relaxed morning and no surprises. (Loose button, shoes that need a quick buffing, and last minute switching purse items, etc ...)
Kind of sad now when there’s not much purpose to dress classy. You can still dress one up on your peers though. How long did it take you to get rid of your black dress slacks ? 😂
Thanks, Anna……I will watch that Ted Talk. I recently retired at 72 and play outside in Florida most mornings. It was easy for me to skip makeup and a put together outfit in the afternoon. I made a conscious decision recently to behave like a “grownup” and dress well, do my hair and makeup, regardless of my afternoon activities. It made me feel great and my husband noticed too. Compliments led to increased confidence. Confidence allows me to enjoy life and positivity with the people around me.
People definitely respond to me differently when I’m dressed up. Women give compliments. Men hold the door. I’m in my 60s, and it’s true: look good, feel good. Great ideas and advice. One of your best videos.
I had a similar realization during Covid with makeup. For the first time since I was a teenager, I didn’t wear any for days during lockdown because I wasn’t going anywhere and it started to impact my mood. Listen- I get it, there’s people out there that think makeup is a confidence killer or blah blah- but for me- I don’t wear makeup for other people, I wear it for myself. It tells me I care and I put in effort that day. Almost like dressing for the life I want, maybe not the life I have! Anyways- I think we all need that. For me it’s makeup, for the Ted talk lady it’s 1950s dress. Find your thing and do it consistently.
Frumpy is usually a result of wearing the wrong proportions rather than the wrong styles, IMO, and that's what you showed though you didn't talk about it a lot. Thanks as always. Wishing you a peaceful week.
I definitely agree on the proportions but I don't think the mid thigh cardigan enhances any look. I'd say do a crop cardigan or as Anna said, go with a longer (mid shin) duster type cardigan.
You need to exercise caution with cardigans. I don't look good in oversized blazers and cropped blazers don't look good with my waist line. My shoulders are broad and I can't get blazers to fit under my coats. Duster cardigans make me look bigger and pick up dirt from your shoes, they tend toward be sloppy. Cardigans that stop around your hips or thighs that are a plain color with good structure look good in blouses, tees, or tanks in cold climates. For me they easily fit under heavy coats. So for me cardigans are budget friendly, easy to clean, good for layering, and an easy third piece. There are cardigan styles that should come with a warning label, screaming "old lady vibe," but they're tweed blazers that say the same. Cardigans are versatile and deserve more respect.
I am 63 and have a pretty physical job, by the end of the week I am exhausted. Most Saturdays I catch up on cleaning and errands, come Sunday I want to get dressed up and do something, anything, just put on something nice and go. It makes me feel so much better
I remember growing up and my parents were from a different country but every day when they had to go whether it was the grocery store or department store or even to the bank or to the post office they always dressed up back in the 60s and the 50s with the suits and the dresses and I find that when I dress up on a daily basis, I feel so much better about myself. We have to take time for ourselves to make ourselves feel better and one of those ways is to dress up. Great video. I do love my cardigans, but sometimes I have to change them before I go out the door because, you’re right, the frump does seep in if you’re not careful.😂
You are so right about the importance of dressing up (or at least dressing nicely) in improving our mood, even when nobody else is going to be there to see it! Quite a few years ago, I was at home for many months recovering from a surgery and wasn’t bothering with makeup, just wearing track pants, etc since I couldn’t walk and/or leave the house. After a few months I was really getting depressed even seeing myself in the mirror. I started to do my hair and makeup in the morning and dress a little better just for my own benefit at home all day, and it made a huge difference in cheering me up whenever I saw myself in the mirror thru the day looking good! Thanks for the reminder 😊
Sunday is my day to dress nicer. I already take it as a day of rest - so no gardening or gym to get dirty and sweaty. Nice to pull out things in my closet I don’t get to wear so often.😍
When we switched my daughter from one private school to another, I decided to carry myself more professionally in what I was wearing when I drop her off. I remember feeling a bit of impostor syndrome dropping her off to her old school wearing my sweatpants and the t-shirt I woke up in, and thought to use this chance at a new first impression. Not only did I feel more respectable, but I felt more confident in making requests and asking for feedback. I gifted myself the perception that other people found interactions with me more valuable than if they were conversing with someone in oversized pyjamas. Kudos to the people who do not work from home who need to dress properly to work onsite everyday. I appreciate seeing the effort that goes into dressing up and reminds me that our family is in good company.
You’re right about interaction! I was feeling frumpy and grumpy lately , seeing my 2 friends in Vegas last week was the best feeling I had for a while! I forgot my aches and pains.
I have found a favorite channel! Thank you for talking about the importance of dressing up and self care, and all the ladies who commented on this video, YOU ARE MY TRIBE. It's psychologically sooo important. I always look back at photos of my parents era (the 50's) or before, and you would see men in dress coats and HATS (always hats!) and ladies in well appointed dresses and shoes etc. I live in a more rural state as well, so even our larger towns are not heavily populated, but in those old photos everyone always looked like they took pride in how they looked, and understood that it was the "best first impression." Seeing that also taught me: It doesn't take a lot of money to dress well. A few key pieces of decent quality that mix and match, and everyone can look good! Much love to all! I'm subscribed now!
I decided to dress up every day since the start of the new school year…and I do actually feel like it has changed my life. I feel like I am so much more focused at work. People take notice of me and I receive so many more compliments. And I just feel so much better about myself. I love it!!! Thanks for all your tips!!! Can’t wait to try some out.
I'm 73 and never go out in public without makeup and being put tpgether, even when wearing jeans. I do wear occasional cardigans, but they're fitted. I never wear anything oversized or baggy. I work out and want to show off the results.
Ive not been looking after myself very well lately. I had a lot of difficult challenges earlier this year and I lost interest in my appearance. Everything is finally settling down so I needed this kick up the butt to get me back on track
I had a three color outfit I wore on a first date years ago - 2 colors, and the third color was a blend of the first two. Red,white, pink. Pink trousers, white top, red and white shoes, belt, purse. I felt this was a “ power” combo for me-and, yes, later I married the fella from that date.😊
I agree with you wearing leisure clothes every day wears you down and takes a toll. On the other hand it's amazing how differently I feel and I am regarded when I take the time and make an effort to wear a beautifully styled outfit when I go out to even just do errands. Agree!
I just found your channel and subscribed right away THANK YOU for this love the practical examples! Never heard of urban revivo until now too finally a place that seems reasonably priced 🙌🏻
The last 2 years I bought a couple of beautiful jersey dresses, 50's look, gorgeous, but not really my style. Although, I look fine in them. Recently I began wearing them at home! They're comfortable and very feminine. My visitors were delighted to see me in them... wide smiles saying, "you look so cute in that dress, not your typical outfit!" Thanks, Anna. I really look forward to your videos. 🥰
I never look frumpy ever. Even if I am just running errands, going to the grocery store, the post office, the doctors office the veterinarians office, I always dress to look nice because I have that self-awareness of WANTING to look good.
Same ... even if I'm just going to the supermarket i try not to look frumpy. I sometimes wear some lululemon stuff but it's still nice. I don't understand how people can just go out the house looking like they juste fell off their bed 🫣😆
Morning Anna, I have lost over 50lbs this past year, so I've had to recently replace my entire wardrobe. As a result, I'm actually excited to search my closet everyday for a feel good outfit to wear! I have a closet full of elevated basics that I can easily mix and match to create great outfits for daily wear. I do occasionally have my off days, but when I'm feeling off, I use the sandwich style outfit formula to elevate my mood. Matching my shoes to my top with a pair of contrasting pants or jeans does the trick every time! I'm really loving your gorgeous black lady jacket, the gold buttons give it a very expensive look! Thanks for another great video! Have a great day!
Thanks Annareid for your amazing videos. I love them. Don't change anything. I'm glad that you shortened them a bit from way back how they use to be. They're perfect now in length as well. Every season, I enjoy watching all the official style shows on the model runways, but as far as individuals doing style tip videos, your videos are the only videos I make sure I watch!
Fall Frump IS a thing! Weather changes really make a difference in motivation to look your best some days! Thanks for this video! You are such a PRO at this! I appreciate your work so much!🎉🎉🎉
I have and Urban Revivo jacket and a sweater. They are gorgeous. Don't let the reasonable price fool you. The quality is excellent and so is the fit. So glad to see you do this video. ❤
I agree! I feel so much better when I am dressed up. No matter what I do if I am working or I go grocery shopping or run other errands or just stay home I always love to look put together and classy ❤Absolutely adore the 40’s, 50’s all the women were so feminine and elegant, I wish we could see more of that nowadays!
I really enjoyed your videos. I work from home and most of the days I’m in sweats but on the weekends I do dress up. I like that idea of dressing like a specific era. It must be so fun. I would like to see a video talking about how to create an autumn wardrobe for different color palettes like dark autumn. Thanks
RE: Waterfall cardigans...What I miss about them is that they often came in lightweight, stretchy fabrics that worked great in warm evenings or air conditioning. There isn't anything to replace them.
Funny enough I actually like the cargo on cargo look- the way you styled it is so cute to me! I think the utilitarian/ cargo/ carpenter pants/ jackets are so in this season! Seeing them everywhere! Also I’m LOVING a wide leg!! 😍
I was going to do a voiceover that said, "I actually don't think this is a bad look but it's the only cargo items I have!" I should have done that bc I agree it's not bad at all 😃❤️
I used your code and ordered a cute jacket and a cute long sleeve shirt from the urban revivo website. Can't wait to get them and try them on. Thank Anna.
When I retired, I was committed to not look like a frump or dress in work out clothes everyday. Your channel has helped me maintain that commitment. Thank you!
Fantastic idea about dressing up at least one day a week! I work from home remotely, and so I don't always have a reason to dress up. I have made it a habit of especially dressing up when I'm feeling down and still dressing up when I have a zoom meeting. Wonderful video thank you for this.
I saw that Ted Talk and thought it was great. My girlfriend and I often do this (we are 70 and 75) and we always get compliments on what we are wearing. It really works.
If I wear a cardigan, I bring it for cooler weather at night- or I put a belt around it and it elevates it immediately. I also love the 3 color method. Love dressing up! So tired of workout clothes everywhere!!
Love the idea of dressing up once a week. I definitely need to start doing that. Working from home sure does make you lazy when it comes to what you wear on a daily basis. Thank you Anna!!!
It is really smart of you to point out you live in Florida. I am in Indiana and we are notorious for having all four seasons in one day! I come to you for seasonal looks. We have hot fall days, so your Florida tips are great. Thanks for all your work ❤
I’m in South Louisiana so I really appreciate your style suggestions and tips for hot weather. You’ve got great style we can all pull ideas from. Just ordered the UR sleeveless knit v necks in both colors. Thanks for the discount code!
This is another great video, Anna. I love the pieces you highlighted. I think it's important to dress "intentionally" for our days. It may not be "dressed up", but it shows you put some thought into your outfit rather than throwing on a t-shirt and jeans. This morning, I wore a cotton top and linen pants to our very casual church, but I coordinated the belt and the sandals, and it really elevated the look. Thank you for your tips!
I loooove the dress with the bow on the front. It’s so elegant and stylish. I may buy that one. I would love to pair it with burgundy tights and black boots. I don’t look good in A-line dresses though because I’m pear shaped so it would be a bit of a gamble…
I identify with your last 2 points! Thank you for the reminders. Doing some physical activity is an important part of my mental health and there is evidence of the mind-body connection. Dress up day is another. Start with one and work up to 6. Totally agree about the structured vs slouchy bag effect, too.
I’m 62, still working full time and I want to look nice every time I walk out of my home. Who doesn’t enjoy a second glance or a compliment?!🥰

Love this too☺️
Leopard prints really hot right now.
Wow. Nothing wrong with the right cardigan or trench coat no matter your age😊
@@BrandiKat A nice fitted cardigan or one that is longer you can belt it. I saw that in the runway.

Your sense of style is absolutely fantastic! Thanks for the great tips!
Absolutely love your hair long. You look beautiful ♥️
Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
Your best hair! Ever!🎉@@ANNAREID29
I’m so glad that you’re discussing about color wheel theory from primary to tertiary colors that complement one another!
I LOVE your hair and makeup!! The video came on and I was like "WOW"! And now I will watch the the rest of the video. :)
Agree!
Yes! And we feel so much better in our own skin ❤️😻
@@ANNAREID29 Thanks Anna appreciated!
I love this! ❤️❤️
I love the dress up tip!! Going to start trying it out this week ❤
Your cardigan actually looks pretty nice. 😀
Also from Florida and I LOVE and HATE all of the fall fashion videos because it's still 90 degrees here every day.😭😭😆😆
You look fabulous on this video. The black and white against your hair looks wonderful
Fall Frump IS a thing! Weather changes really make a difference in motivation to look your best some days! Thanks for this video! You are such a PRO at this! I appreciate your work so much!🎉🎉🎉
i absolutely love your videos. So relevant for me!!
Thank you for reminding me to pay attention to my health!❤
I love how your hair looks!
I have and Urban Revivo jacket and a sweater. They are gorgeous. Don't let the reasonable price fool you. The quality is excellent and so is the fit. So glad to see you do this video. ❤
Agreed! Their quality and value is great ❤️❤️
@@ANNAREID29 the only issue I have with Urban Revivo is the sizing. I purchased a denim top in size L and it fit my daughter who wears a size 0!
Awesome video! I’ve been a bit behind on watching your content, but I just had to drop in and say-your hair looks absolutely fabulous!
3 color rule is beautiful
Thank you for your suggestions.... Always a helpful video.. you look amazing w/ longer hair and your makeup has been on point!!
I really enjoyed your videos. I work from home and most of the days I’m in sweats but on the weekends I do dress up. I like that idea of dressing like a specific era. It must be so fun. I would like to see a video talking about how to create an autumn wardrobe for different color palettes like dark autumn. Thanks
This was one of my favorite videos of yours, especially the part at the end
RE: Waterfall cardigans...What I miss about them is that they often came in lightweight, stretchy fabrics that worked great in warm evenings or air conditioning. There isn't anything to replace them.
Yes, same! I could keep one in my purse and it was so handy
You hit the nail on the head with your statement about not feeling well causing me to dress like frumpomania. I appreciate you calling me out.
These looks are so elegant
Funny enough I actually like the cargo on cargo look- the way you styled it is so cute to me! I think the utilitarian/ cargo/ carpenter pants/ jackets are so in this season! Seeing them everywhere!
Also I’m LOVING a wide leg!! 😍
Yeah, that look was very cute and not frumpy at all.
Thank Anna.
I had someone tell me to make sure you look nice when you're out and about because you never know when you're going to meet your husband! ❤❤
Could you show us more how to wear fall in South Florida?
You look sensational!!I loved all the great tips!❤❤❤
When I retired, I was committed to not look like a frump or dress in work out clothes everyday. Your channel has helped me maintain that commitment. Thank you!
The black and white dress with the neck tie on you. It is so retro and so chic!
Thank you! It’s such a fun style! ❤️
Love your videos! You are so funny and really engaging!! Love the content too!!
Fantastic idea about dressing up at least one day a week! I work from home remotely, and so I don't always have a reason to dress up. I have made it a habit of especially dressing up when I'm feeling down and still dressing up when I have a zoom meeting. Wonderful video thank you for this.
Great advise!! Dressing & putting on makeup makes a huge difference in my outlook on life‼️‼️
So much! ❤️❤️❤️
Oh, cardigan over silky top, it could be extremely successful outfit ❤
Ana your videos are always helpful. Thank you!
Glad you liked this one! ❤️❤️❤️
I could take a shot every time you said “cardigan” and end up feeling pretty good. Very funny. I enjoy you and your content.❤❤❤
Omg I watched that TedTalk too! It was so inspiring! Loved it.
Great tips! Also thank you for sharing that Ted talk. I needed that one this morning. I'm gonna start and wear less invisiwear outfits 😆
Excellent suggestions! I like the idea of having fun with your clothes and feeling special at least one day out of the week😘
Your hair looks GREAT!
Love the idea of dressing up once a week. I definitely need to start doing that. Working from home sure does make you lazy when it comes to what you wear on a daily basis. Thank you Anna!!!
That last point is so critical!!
You are on point about dressing up. It helps me mentally to do so. I invested in great bras and panties too. If I look good, I feel good.
Very helpful! Thank you
You look great! I especially love your hair❤
It is really smart of you to point out you live in Florida. I am in Indiana and we are notorious for having all four seasons in one day! I come to you for seasonal looks. We have hot fall days, so your Florida tips are great. Thanks for all your work ❤
That TED Talk - I shared it with someone I’ve been worried about. Thanks! I enjoy your videos a lot!
Thank you for your tips!
excellent advice. Thank you
The cardigan and all the outwear pieces look great.
Of the outfits you shared.
I love the crop jackets
Even if I don’t see a soul that day, getting dressed with hair and makeup done, I feel good about myself❤
I love dusters, ruanas, and long vests.
Love this channel thank you for these great suggestions
Nice video !
Is there a link for the olive cropped jacket ?
Thank you !
I loooove the dress with the bow on the front. It’s so elegant and stylish. I may buy that one. I would love to pair it with burgundy tights and black boots. I don’t look good in A-line dresses though because I’m pear shaped so it would be a bit of a gamble…
I wanted to order a couple of things , do their clothes run true to size ? Love every look!
Love the jeans you wear in the beginning of the video.❤
I love the Chanel style jacket you’re wearing. I’ve been looking at them recently.
I identify with your last 2 points! Thank you for the reminders. Doing some physical activity is an important part of my mental health and there is evidence of the mind-body connection. Dress up day is another. Start with one and work up to 6.
Totally agree about the structured vs slouchy bag effect, too.
❤️❤️❤️
